7.2 Large Library Problems?

I keep my library small because I have over 600 GB of music, but I wanted to do create some new playlists and burn some new CD's - I have never had trouble before dragging in 2,000 songs into a new playlist - it takes a while to get everything in there but no problems - itunes was great because even with 2,000 songs, it was still fast but in 7.2, it just starts to update gapless and/or album art and then just freezes.
I broke it up in smaller chunks but now and even tossed out the LIBRARY file to start over but now, it defaults to the store and just freezes in trying to draw the front page.
Anyone else with this problem?

I have finally solved the problem myself. iTunes email support suggested that I rename my /Library/Preferences/SystemPreferences folder and reboot. The idea being that the error was a network problem and the reboot would repopulate the defunct SystemPreferences folder. Of course this will hose all of your network settings as well. Unfortunately my SystemPreference folder didn't repopulate correctly. I was left without access to the AirPort and no way to reconfigure it through the GUI. This is where iTunes support pawned me off on applecare, who was also unable to resolve the problem. They wanted me to mail them my macbook and wait 7 days for them to have a "product specialist" reinstall the OS. So, I reinstalled the OS myself. No luck. Having saved the old SystemPreference folder I began swapping out some of the old files for new, eventually finding a combination that allowed for iTunes to authorize purchases and the AirPort to be configurable. In the process I learned a bit about the .plist configuration files OSX uses. If you have the same problem I did, save your old preferences.plist file and make certain the new airport.plist points to the correct alphanumeric identifier for your airport.

  • How to handle large library, limited data plan

I've been using Itunes Match for about six months now, and I'm having problems...
I live rurally and so I use an AT&T hotspot with a 10 gig/month data plan for my phone, ipad, and desktop mac. My wireless connection speed is pretty good.
I have about 15000 tracks in my Itunes library, most not purchased through Itunes.
When I signed up for Match and went through the initial process, it took about 24 hours and used up about six gig, which caused a significant overage in my data plan. Consequently, I just use Match on my Mac and decided not to use it on my other devices because of the data limitations. My motivation to use it currently is as a back up for my music. I connect my phone to my mac manually to transfer some of my music to my phone.
I figured that the data overuse problem was a one time deal if I didn't use my other devices.
But recently, when I purchase a song from emusic or Amazon, the icloud processing image pops up after the download purchase is complete. Itunes will then start the process of sending data to Amazon, which was still going at 4 hours yesterday when I manually stopped it as I saw my data plan being used up. It seemed to restart the process of sending periodically and never got to the analyzing or returning data stages.
Now my recently purchased music shows up with both the Icloud processing symbol and a faded download icloud icon, one for each separate track. I can play the "processing" track, but Itunes won't allow me to add it to a playlist. Further, if I'm online with my hotspot, sometimes the regular Itunes Icon is visible, but at other times the icon with the thunderbold through it. I'm guessing this means it's streaming with the first icon, playing from my harddrive with the second.
So a couple of questions, and sorry for the length, I'm a first-time support user
    1) Does it make sense to use Match with such a large library, and limited data plan?
    2) "Where" is the music I've purchased - on my computer or in the cloud?
    3) Should it take all day to send data to itunes, when the only updates to my library are songs I've deleted and a handful of new albums I purchased.
    4) Am I using up my data plan when the regular Icloud Icon appears and I'm online? Is there a way to manually play from the hardrive to reduce use of my data plan? I turned off Match once and payed with a half-day sending and receiving session when I turned it back on.
    4) Will I lose music if I unsubscribe from Match?
Thanks to anybody who has the inclination to respond to any of these questions!

This datasource sends After images in delta loads which is compatible with loading to a Std DSO only. You cannot load from this datasource directly to a cube.
You can check with business the number of years they would need history. If they need for 5 years, you could delete data older than that or Archive.
For GL, there would not be any changes to years that are closed for posting. There may be adjustments carried out for the previous fiscal year. I guess there would not be any changes to years prior to that. So archiving old data should not affect delta.

  • Best way to manage large library with AAC and MP3 versions of files

I have a large library of music. I listen to music through iTunes and iPod/iPhones, but also other devices which only support MP3, and not AAC. I typically convert iTunes purchases to MP3, but I'm left with two copies of each song in the same folder. I'm looking for recommendations on the best way to manage what would essentially be a duplicated music library - a high quality version I use with my iTunes/ipods, and a lower quality MP3 version for the devices that only support that format.

I have had a similar problem. I have all my music residing on a NAS where I access it from iTunes (for managing my iPods/iPhones) and a Tivo PVR (which is connected to my house stereo system.) The problem is that Tivo does not recognize AAC. So I've used iTunes to create mp3 versions of all my purchased AAC music. Because the NAS is set as my iTunes media folder location, iTunes puts the mp3 copies back into the existing folder structure (which it keeps organised) on the NAS. Tivo accesses the NAS directly, over the network. But iTunes also puts the additional copy into the iTunes library which leaves me with multiple copies of the same songs on iTunes AND my iPods. Having multiple copies on the NAS (mp3 for Tivo and AAC for iPod) is OK: I've got plenty of space on the NAS and the Tivo doesn't 'see' the AAC files.
The solution I'm planning to implement is to delete the mp3 entries from the library as soon as I create them (leaving the files in the media folder.) But what I'm looking is for a way to automatically select the mp3 copies (for deletion) from the existing duplicates list. Any ideas?

  • Sharing a LARGE library - best way?

    Hello all
I have a library of over 16,000 pics - the iPhoto library folder is almost 20GB. I would like to share this library across my wireless home network. Read-only access is fine for everyone (but me). I currently have the library on an external FW 400 drive, plugged into a G4 mini (1.5 GHz with 1GB RAM). I have an Airport Express (802.11g) wireless network in the house. I have set the libary to be shared, and can see it on my MacBook and my iMac, in other rooms of the house. I would like to use the Mini as a file/media server for the house, so I would like to leave the network this way if possible.
    The problems are:
    1. Speed. I realize that it will take a LONG time to transfer 20GB of data over a wireless network, but....wow! Interestingly enough, the network seems to load photos "on demand" - meaning, that as I scroll through the unloaded pics, I get "placeholder icons". If I stop scrolling for a few seconds - the images start loading exactly where I have stopped! That's kind of cool.
    2. EVERY time I am browsing the library on a "client" machine (either the MB or the iMac), iPhoto crashes on me - usually after about 20% or so of the library has loaded. Every single time.
The two thoughts I had were - to reduce the library size, or to increase the network speed (or both). As to reducing the libary size - is there a way to back up iPhoto pictures by date - say I want to back up everything from 2005 to DVD, then delete it from the library. How would I do this, and would it prevent iPhoto from crashing?
As to increasing network speed - wired isn't really an option for me, so would buying a new Airport Extreme (802.11n) really improve things that much? I realize I'd have to figure out how to get the G4 Mini on an N network, but I could do that if it would help.
I've also thought about splitting the library (using iPhoto Library Manager) into more manageable chunks, but I'm not sure how this would work, or even if it would help.
Is any one else out there wirelessly sharing a large library? If so, how?
    thanks a lot!

    Richard:
The best way to share a library with multiple Macs or multilple users on the same Mac would be as discussed in iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users.
With this method the Mac hosting the external FW drive would have to be on for the other Macs to see and use the library, but only one at a time.
With the new Airport Extreme I believe you could use an external HD plugged into the USB port on the Airport Extreme and let the wireless Macs access the library without the other Mac being online. I not 100%$ sure of that but think that would do it. You'd have to make sure you turn of the ownership on that drive in either method.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Genius and large library seems like a no go.

I have a large library, slightly under 100k tracks,(yes in the music business and with thousands of cd's digitized over the last 8 years)and it seems that my genius, under Itunes 9, goes through the process and then as soon as it starts to send to Apple it tells me there is not enough memory - the apple store has an error. It was fine under version 8.x. Has anyone with a library that size or greater been successful in getting genius to function. BTW, aside from uninstalling, checking all settings, etc., I made a small library of about 1000 tracks and it was fine.

I had a similar problem because the external monitor was not properly identified. Some fooling around in the display properties finally allowed the monitor to be seen and then I could set the resolution differently then the internal monitor and clamshell worked fine, for hour and hours, even if the MBP went to sleep. Waking it with lid closed brought everything up on the external monitor.
Sorry but I can't remember exactly what I did. But it is my nature that if something isn't working the way I want it to I hit every button and or option in whatever screen I'm in until it starts work the way I want.
I do remember that originally there was only one windows open for display properties until I did something (???) and then there was 2 windows. One for the internal screen and one for the external. From there it was a piece of cake. Set different res and refresh rates (external is a older CRT).

  • ITunes Extremely Slow with large library

I recently inherited a huge amount of music (36,000 tracks/211 gigs) which I keep on a Time Capsule as an external drive connect to an Airport Express which I use as a bridge to my home stereo. iTunes is pointed to the TC as the music source and there is no music content on my Macbook's HD, only the iTunes library itself and the cover art. I believe I have the standard RAM (black Macbook, purchased June 2007, which I think is 1gig).
iTunes is not extremely slow in cover flow, I get constant spinning balls and it takes quite a while for the program to close. Do I need more RAM (I think there is a 2gig max for my Macbook)? Is 36,000 tracks more than iTunes was designed to handle? Any chance storing the content on an external drive via WiFi affects the iTunes library response?

I haven't had experience with newer Intel macs with this issue, so I'm a bit hesitant to try to answer, but here goes. This may not at ALL apply to what you're dealing with.
The problem of incredibly slow behavior with large libraries in iTunes has been an issue since at LEAST 7.0 if not much earlier. I have over 130,000 tracks in my library, stored on a WD 1TB studio drive connected to my "home media server - a G4 Cube" via firewire and shared over ethernet to 3 macs. Do a search for "slow large library" in these forums and you will see NUMEROUS threads all complaining about various issues people seem to have when the number of tracks gets into the tens of thousands, much less over 100k.
In any case, there are some things I've found that seem to help:
    1. Keep the actual library (database) files on boot drive. IF you have the music files on a separate drive, it helps to keep the iTunes Library folder on the internal drive with the coverart where it can be accessed faster. This is the database (xml) file that iTunes loads and saves when changes are made to the tags or tracks.
    2. Also, if you've not got a lot of playlists to worry about saving (i don't use playlists much, just play cds out of the browser mostly, or have some smart playlists).. it helps to rebuild the iTunes library from scratch at some point. I have no reason to believe this, but I assume it creates a new optimized database this way. (maybe someone can correct me on this... after say months of retagging tracks, playing music, creating and deleting playlists etc... does the database end up 'messier' OR does it correctly rewrite everything and optimize constantly or when you quit itunes?) What I DO know is that if you shorten the path to the music, it will be a smaller file. So don't make it "My Firewire Drive/Music Files/iTunes Files/CDs and MP3s/By Artists/*" this gets written as the path for EACH track in the library file that it then needs to load. Make it "Music/Artists/*" or something as short as you can. Then, what I did was to set iTunes to NOT copy music to the library folder, and starting with a blank iTunes dragged the icon of my shared music folder containing all the mp3 files into the iTunes window. It took overnight and the better part of the next day to read in all 130k files, copy the embedded coverart to the local folder, and the longest part, "determining gapless playback" --which i wish they'd give us a way to disable, takes forever! and i dont' use it (if anyone knows how to stop gapless scanning on a mac, let us know)... but fortunately you only have to do this once.
    3. More RAM. My main computer is an MDD Dual 1ghz G4. Until about a month ago I had a gig of ram, then I finally got around to upgrading to 2 gigs. It DEFINATELY made a big difference. Where before I'd see the rainbow ball for 30 seconds whenever I made playlists or changes to tags.. now I often don't see it at all, or certainly much less.
I read not long ago an article talking about WHY iTunes was so bad at scaling up for larger libraries. The author suggested it was due to the library being saved out in an XML database and that unless Apple changes its backend to iTunes, it will not be possible to squeeze much more performance out of it. This probably makes it useless for DJs, radio stations, classical music lovers or anyone with large collections of music with many tracks. I assumed that at some point we'd see Apple rewrite iTunes to take advantage of the SQL database in the OS level, but who knows. I really don't think I understand database stuff at this level.
**Finally... I HAVE noticed that recently it has seemed to be getting more responsive. On one of my other machines (an iMac 800mhz g4!) running iTunes used to be a frustrating proposition with constant spinning beachballs and hangs before it let you pick music or change tracks. Now its actually usable. I don't know when this got 'better' but I think with either 7.6, 7.6.1 or 7.6.2 they have done something to make it more responsive. At least in my experience. So thats a good development.
But seriously.. do a search thru the forums and you'll find a lot more about this problem with large libraries.
    Goodluck.

  • ITunes 7 & large library - slow loading

After upgrading to iTunes 7 it takes for ever to launch iTunes and now I get a progress bar that says loading iTunes Library that I didn't get under iTunes 6, I have about 30,000 songs in my library so I imagine it is only a issue with large libraries doe any one else have this issue?...

I also have a rather large library. iTunes 7 definitely takes longer to load. In addition I am now having a problem opening my music folder in my home directory using the Finder to view the files in the folder. If I right-click on the folder I get the spinning beachball for approximately 1 minute (on a dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 w/ 2GB of RAM). When I am finally able to select "Get Info" I get the spinning beachball again for quite a while (at least several minutes!) When the Finder finally reports back it says there is NOTHING in the folder! Aside from my iTunes library I have numerous other tracks in my Music folder that have not been added to my iTunes library. Since iTunes 7 can "see" my iTunes library and play the tracks in there in there I'll assume that my other tracks are still there. The permissions appear to be ok for the folder. I can't believe that Apple has rushed out such a flawed "upgrade" to iTunes! The new features are desirable but it seems that there are way too many glitches with iTunes 7.

  • Streaming large library

Has anyone been able to stream music from a large library yet? I have a wired connection to a 500GB iTunes music library and it just spins and never actually does anything. Just curious what other people's experiences are with streaming from large libraries. Trying a factory reset now....

dcphoto1 - I've been having the same problem with no resolution so far. The other posts in this thread all seem to get resolved after waiting a significant amount of time, but mine never resolves...and I've monitored the bandwidth between my desktop and the AppleTV - when I first click my desktop source there's a spike in traffic for maybe 3 seconds...and then it simply stops....
The loading circle continues to spin on my TV, but then literally crashes the unit and restarts (goes into restore mode).
I have yet to see a single solution or recommendation anywhere within apple for this issue.

  • ITunes 11 Memory leak when search box is clicked, large library

Mac pro running 10.7 8-core 14gb ram, itunes library on a striped array
scrolling performance is a huge improvement but the app hangs when the search bock is clicked on
and it goes into a massive memory leak, see attached screen grab
works fine in mountain lion with a smaller library, so I assume its choking on my 140,000 tunes ?

I have the same problem. iTunes will eat up 80gb of space if I leave it running; eventually I have to force quit it, and slowly after that the hard drive space returns.
I wasn't sure if it was choking on the search tool, but I have a fairly large library also, so it would make sense.
Anyone got any good fixes for this?

You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

  • The missing library problem.

I understand that there's already a lot of threads about the sudden disappearance of iTunes libraries, however I'm typing this up because I'd like to point out in a bit more detail what I'm seeing happening to my computer, and maybe have a collective of what's going on. This issue has happened to me five times in the last two months since I've updated to iTunes 11. After searching on google I know the missing library problem has existed since the early 2000s; why this glitch has yet to be fixed 13 years later is beyond me. I have personally never had this problem until updating to 11, and seeing the many other threads on here this appears to me to be an issue with this version of the software more than it has been in previous versions.
Before I continue, I have tried the following to fix it:
Simply readded my whole library. It was only wiped again a few weeks later.
Completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. That didn't work either, so it's not just an updating problem.
    What I haven't tried
Changing where on my computer iTunes is installed. I have no idea where on the computer might be better or if it will change anything. I have iTunes installed on its default location on my local C: disk.
Importing the music directly from my iPod into iTunes. Can this be done? If so, how? Not everything on my iTunes is a store purchase, most of it is imported CDs and also amazon purchases too. So I don't know if the transfer purchases option works. While this wouldn't fix this current issue, I would like to know how to do this if possible since it would just be a quick fix whenever this happens.
    What is happening:
So each time this has happened, what occurs is that like many other people, one day I open my iTunes and everything is in order. Then the next, for no reason, all of my libraries are gone but the music is still on my computer, organized in their files the way iTunes had them done so upon importing. I can't use the .itl files in the "previous libraries" folder because they have also been re-written. Upon opening them, even if their last save was on a day I know everything was in working order, opening them does nothing but give me the same blank default page.
What isn't mentioned in a lot of the posts regarding this issue, is the sudden crop of temporary files in the iTunes folder.
The ones that have cropped up for me personally are the following:
    iT 1.tmp
    iT 2.tmp
    iT 3.tmp
    iT 4.tmp
    Temp file 1.tmp
    Temp file 2. tmp
Those were not there the last time I used iTunes, and they're never there on the days I've used it before and it has worked correctly. However every time my library is wiped, these files suddenly appear without fail, every time. I can't open them, I can't do anything with them except delete them. I believe I remember reading somewhere that this might be an issue regarding with how the program is saving the progress of your library changing, and that the temp files are there until it can "officially" save what has happened to your library. While I didn't change anything in my library in the last couple of weeks, I'm assuming this also counts things like play count.
    My own personal opinion
Seeing just how many threads with this issue are popping up, this leads me to believe that this isn't just a problem with my personal computer or my personal install of iTunes 11. These temp files also lead me to believe that as well. In other words, whatever glitch has existed with iTunes since the early 2000s is for some reason running rampant in version 11.
    TL;DR:
Please developers, actually look at this library glitch within the program itself. It can't just be an individual user's problem because way too many people are experiencing it.

No worries. You've probably run into one the other threads I've posted to but I'll add my thoughts here anyway...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied and renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.
