7.35gb of "Other"????

OK...since the firmware upgrade I have had at least one problem per day and it's not getting any better. Now I have 2.53gb of audio, 2.45gb of video, 105mb of photos, 1.23gb of apps, and *7.96 of Other*. What the heck is Other??? I only have 2 audio books on there and NOTHING else. It shows that I only have 389mb of free space!!! That's insane. I have restarted, reset, restored and I am re-ally getting frustrated. Even Apple support couldn't figure it out in a 15 minute phone call today. Can anyone help me???

I just want to bring a little positive vibration to the newbie. I've been using macs since 1988. Today I had the exact same problem as you, and for the life of me, there is still no real answer to what is "other" ... corrupt file is probably a good guess but the files are not really corrupted, its just that iTunes is not wanting to see it for what it is, Other is basically your existing files of music and photos and videos.... but now they are in some unreachable cache or memory, making them effectively corrupt files
In my case updating to iTunes 8.1.1 turned out to be a nightmare for my iPhone. By small miracle I happened to have 8.0 on my other macintosh.
Apple does NOT want users reversing and using old versions, so... they do not make old versions of iTunes available, My problems began with 8.1 and I solved it by replacing it with my own backup of 8.0
So when I restored my iPhone ,..... I got 7.1 Gbs of "Other"
Just like user suggested, I restored and now I have 129mb of other, Go figure, at least I can live with that for now....
Never feel less than equal just because your new, but it really helps to include your machine info and Operating system because the brainiacs who helps us, often need that info to diagnose your problems, cheers!!!!
Go to the apple top left and choose about this mac, then click more info to really find out whats under the hood

• Why are all my songs now classified as 'Other' and not visible on my phone any more?

Here's an idea of what's happened recently;
Got a new a computer and set up my iTunes library no problem, had access to all the same music I had on my old PC.
Just added a new album to my iTunes library, which also worked fine, but when I tried to sync it to my iPhone 5 I wasn't able to transfer anything to it.
I used iTunes to back up my iPhone and do a full restore on the iPhone hoping that would fix the issue.
Now my 35GBs of Music is classified as 'Other' storage, there's not enough room on the iPhone to transfer all my songs to it again and no way to delete the 'Other' storage to make space for it.
I have tried unchecking 'Sync only checked songs and videos' and rechecking it. I have also tried unchecking and checking 'Sync Music'. Either way I go the iPhone still has 35GBs of Other storage I can't seem to remove.
Any help or support?

I ended up doing a Full Restore on my iPhone without restoring from a previous backup. I'm just curious what I have to do in the future to prevent this issue if I switch PC's again.

• Restoring iPad from iPhone backup to get rid of 'Other'

I have a 32GB iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. In Itunes the iPad shows 5.99GB of 'Other' which I have been unable to ascertain exactly what this comprises of although a search of these forums indicates it may be corrupted material.
In the hope of regaining the 5.99Gb (or at least some of it) I am thinking of restoring the iPad from my iPhone 4 backup which has 2.35GB of 'Other'. This will at least release 3.6GB of space (if it works).
Any comments or suggestions about the feasibility doing of this? There seems to be conflicting views on the Internet so some comments would be appreciated.

• Storage capacity consumed by 10 Gb of Other!

Since a recent update on my iPhone, the storage capacity has been consumed by 10.35Gb of "Other."
There are no movies or TV downloads; audio has been reduced to 4Gb; the rest of the memory consists of 18 Mb photos and 22 Mb of Apps.
Any suggestions on how I can get my memory back or how I can discover what is contained within the "other" category??
Rubicon Day

I had the same problem, and after reading several posts I tried restoring from a backup (after backing-up the backup to another file). It didn't get rid of the "Other". So then I tried resetting to factory settings--that did the trick, got the "other" down to a reasonable 200+ MB. The only problem is that this erased ALL of the data stored on my iPhone!
Here's my question: if I now restore from that previous backup, will I end up putting all of that "other" stuff back onto my phone, and end up back where I started? (I really don't want to have to re-enter everything manually :o( )

• Average Size of Win 7?

What is the average size of the Windows 7 install on the Bootcamp drive? Mine is 40 gb and that seems a little large. Did I do something wrong?

New to Mac has nothing to do with this or using Windows.
Pagefile can be reduced to 4GB. Hibernation can be disabled. Otherwise page may be taking 8-12GB and hibernation taking 8GB as well. Reduce page file, just don't try to disable or set to zero is all. All of this can be fond easily.
20GB would never really be safe to work with and could not allow all the updates needed, plus could lose the abilty to login on next startup due to low space.
An SSD should always have 10-15GB of free SSD for TRIM and Garbage Collection so having 20GB free is probably as small as you would want.
I don't install that much, I keep all my data on other disk drives, and Windows takes about 35GB.

• Sharing libraries with other user accounts

please help, iTunes gurus, I'm stuck.
I want to share iTunes libraries between 2 user accounts, on the same computer. The machine runs Windows XP Home, and both accounts are Computer Administrator level but have their file spaces set as private.
What I'd like is something similar to the sharing of an iTunes library over the network from another computer, is this possible?
If not, would I have to manually go through 2 ~35GB libraries to move those albums that both people like into "Shared Documents\Shared Music" then manually point iTunes to the new locations of the folders that were previously in "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" ?
Clever suggestions welcomed.

I have done (most of) this and can see and share libraries while on my home network BUT, I can only listen to them through iTunes on the computer.
Is there a way to get them into my library so that theey sync to my ipod as well?

• My iPhone 5 appears to be using too much memory, particularly 7.9GB out of the 32GB labeled "OTHER". Even my iPad Air has only 3.9GB labeled "OTHER". How do I identify what "OTHER" is actually used for and how do I mitigate this?

According to iTunes I am using approximately 20.35GB of the available 27.32GM of memory, leaving about 7GB free. Of the used memory, about 7.9GB is labeled "OTHER". Making the same measurement on my iPad Air, only 3.9GB is labeled "OTHER". Why am I loosing so much memory capacity and what do I do to mitigate this problem?
This is having a significant effect on using my iPhone for recording Video interviews which in some cases constitute two to three hours of video. I need to be able togged the "OTHER" memory space so I can do more than one video recording during a session. Lowering the "OTHER" category to 3.9GB, the same as the iPad Air, would make it possible to record two or in some cases three videos before having to offload them to the MacBook Pro for editing in the evening.

No, it's not, if you would actually read the linked information like I said. There is plenty of information in this link about how to reduce or eliminate your 'Other' data without using third-party programs or procedures:

• Is there any way to connect time capsule to a MacBook Pro directly via USB. I have a large amount of data that I want to back up and it is taking a very long time (35GB is taking 3 hrs, I have 2TB if files in total)...)?

Perhaps via USB. I have a large amount of data that I want to back up and it is taking a very long time (35GB is taking 3 hrs, I have 2TB if files in total)...? I want to use TimeCapsule as back-up for an archive which is curently stored on a 2 TB WESC HD.

No, you cannot backup via direct usb connection..
But gigabit ethernet is much faster anyway.. are you connected directly by ethernet?
Is the drive you are backing up from plugged into the TC? That will slow it down something chronic.. plug that drive in by its fastest connection method.. WESC sorry I have no idea. If ethernet use that.. otherwise USB direct to the computer.. always think what way the files come and go.. but since you are copying from the computer everything has to go that way.. it makes things slower if they go over the same cable.. if you catch the drift.

• RAM Drive, other SSD as PS Scratch?

Hey
As I sit watching the hourglass spin on another batch (open 1GB file, downsample to 20MB, save as tif) I'm wondering if the use of a RAM drive like the I-ram (4GB PCI SSD or ?) as my primary PS scratch would speed up a process like this. I do a ton of this kind of stuff. Presently I'm using a 35GB 10k Ultra SCSI for scratch. Most of the time is spent on disk grinding as the Task Manager shows about a 7-35% processor hit at any given time and PS scratch remains @ around 1.7GB. Also, would it be faster to include a "purge all" step in a batch like this? I'd appreciate anyone's experiance with this since it would be about a $350 experiment I'd need to talk our IT dept into...
Thanks! TLL
Other specs - Dell Precision 650 3gb RAM (maxed out), dual P4's, 2-70GB and the 35, all 10k Ultras

From what I've read over the last couple of weeks, SSD isn't much if any faster than very fast hard drives. I don't know about RAM drives, but you'd think they would be the fastest alternative. That's where I would focus my online research.

• Why so much other on my HD?

I have very little space left. I moved video's and pictures to an external drive. It originally showed that all of a sudden, my MobileBackUp ballooned up almost 35GB, now its empty and my "Other" absorbed it. I ran my OmniDiskSweeper and it shows about 50 less GB than what the storage report shows. Help? Trash is empty on desktop and iPhoto.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

• Any FCP Studio News At NAB Other than Xsan and 25P Canon/JVC?

Just wondering if Apple's got something else in the queue other than the 17 inch, xSan, support of Canon/JVC frames rates?
Any news at all?

It comes without a lens. YOu can buy the lens they make (Oakley, so it is a good lens) for $7,500...or you can use ANY film camera lens. It has the standard connection for prime lenses. Darn sweet.
Really too much to go into. I liked the way the Adobe line of products integrated and worked together (hey, I can be impressed by other editing applications even if I prefer others)...and how Adobe Audition allowed you to work with audio visually with Photoshop tools (had to see it to really get it). I liked the way Avid (GAH...AVID) has improved many things, and offered things that FCP doesn't. Hoping it will get FCP to work on that. Still, FCP is half the price and can produce the same result, and in my opinion is easier to work the timeline.
Iomega has it's Rev drive...35GB and shipping...which is great for archiving P2 footage. They are far sturdier than hard drives and available now, where HD DVD and Blu-Ray aren't.
Ahh...too much to mention. Tired....must sleep.

• Start up Disk Full - eating 35Gb in 24 hours!

Hi,
Any help appreciated. I have recently been getting repeated "startup disk is full" errors. On investigation with disk inventory X, I deleted files and generally tidied up my system which released 35GB of free space, but within 24 hours this space has all been used again. On using disk inventory X, I saw no obvious culprits. I searched for new files created within the last 24 hours, and again, no obvious culprits were apparent to me. On checking console, the following error message was seen repeatedly as if something was trying to write a file over and over again, but I have no idea what is happening. The error message is:
2008-05-17 22:16:49.069 SyndicationAgent[15520] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sat 17 May 2008 10:34:15 -800'
I have thought about the virus route, but having checked with Clam XV, again nothing appeared.
The problem started soon after I began using Garageband 3 with a keyboard attached via a midi to usb converter, but again can see no obvious multiple garageband files that could be causing the problem. I have previously used this same setup, although with garageband 2 on my iMac with no problems.
All my media files are stored externally, so its not them either!
I am really starting to loose my hair over this - and I haven't got that much to loose! I do not really want to have to re-format and start again.
Any help or ideas greatfully received.
Thanks

Now when I do Backup using PsyncX, I backup to an external hard drive to a directory called the same name? Maybe something has gone a bit funny? The volumes directory is at the same level as the macintosh HD directory when I look at my system in terminal.
Looking at the web page for PsyncX, it mentions that one of the functions is to set up cron for backups, so I think Clea might be on to something. That could also explain why you're seeing the Postfix log entries (the line about maildrop), since the system might be trying to send an email. First, see what's in your crontabs. For the root user (most likely place for a backup job, I'd think), run this command in the Terminal (you'll have to supply your administrator's password):

sudo crontab -l

If there's nothing in that crontab, you'll get this reply:

crontab: no crontab for root

If there's something in your crontab, it'll look something like this:

*/10 * * * * /path/to/command/or/script

Where the first five fields (*/10 * * * *) will be different, but somewhat similar to mine above. To remove it entirely, use this command:

sudo crontab -r

If there's nothing in the root crontab, look in the users' crontabs. For the current user, it's simple:

crontab -l

And for any other users (if you've created them), it's:

sudo crontab -u shortusername -l

And, again, "-r" to remove the crontab entirely if you wish.
Since it looks like Postfix is trying to send you emails, you should open up a new Terminal window and look to see if you have a line just above the prompt that says:

You have new mail.

If you do, then you can use that to see what message the OS is trying to send to you. Type the word mail at the prompt. You should see a listing of messages. If you hit the "enter" key, you'll start reading the emails at the first one. When you're done reading an email, hit the "d" key to delete it.
If you don't delete it, it'll get stored in a file called "mbox" in your account's home directory, which is just a plain text file. So if you end up with this file, just look it over in TextEdit or something and delete it if there's nothing in it you want.
Once you figure out what all the messages are (there may be quite a few, perhaps many dozens or even hundreds), you can delete them in blocks while still in the command line mail program. Just use the "h" key to display all the headers, look at the number in the second column, which is the message number, and delete a range:

& d8-10
