7.4.1 is garbage

Just reverted back down to 7.3.1 due to 7.4.1 garbage update. Extreme + Express set up with two Macbook Pros and kept losing connection to stable Cable Internet.
Some of us work remotely and rely on a stable system.

I second this. 7.4.1 seems to be garbage for me as well, when I try and "extend this network" between an airport extreme (gigE model) and an airport express. Reverting to older firmware fixed all my problems.
What I saw when using 7.4.1 is the machines that were connecting to the remote Airport express (ethernet) would get a huge amount of latency about every 4 seconds which made downloading anything or streaming anything take a really long time. Simply reverting to older firmware (changing no settings) fixed the problem once and for all.
I have 7.4.1 installed on a bunch of AEBS's at work which are not extended, they all work fine without issue.

  • A program that I would like to garbage can...

I was futzing around and thought I would take a look at DVD sharing re my MBA (DVD-less). In my web search I found a program called...
"DVD_or_CD_sharing_setup.dmg" which I downloaded and ran. I never did see any change in my system so I moved the download to the Garbage Can.  Then, it trying to empty the trash, a message popped up that said...
"DVD_or_CD_sharing_setup.dmg" is in use and unable to empty from garbage.  I've done a search and can't find this program anywhere on the HD.  Anyone know how to get this file off my MBA?
I should note that in look at the dmg file, it says it was created in March 5, 2008.  More old web trash sitting around waiting for someone like me to download it.
Sure would like to make it disappear completely.

Disregard the question above.  I just discovered how to delete the program.  It was hiding under DEVICES in Finder.  A quick "eject" and it was gone from there and then from garbage.

  • Photoshop CS3 printing garbage characters on HP LaserJet 1300

After installing CS3, Photoshop prints garbage characters on my HP LaserJet 1300.
Yes, I have tried printing as ASCII, ASCII85, Binary and JPEG - nothing helps (plus the settings won't stick even after holding down Alt and clicking the Remember button).
The only way to print right now is to choose Save as PDF in the print dialogue, open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print from there.
    Any ideas?

tzw - I responded about this on another forum. I talked to technical support at Adobe about this exact issue about 2 months ago - can't print photoshop CS3 on any of my three HP printers. ( I have a HP1200, an HP 2550 and a HP photosmart 7660) (CS2 works fine) They worked with me for about an hour - called me back and worked some more, and then decided to send it up to the programmers (or engineers or whatever) The programmers called me and worked with me for another hour - trying different set-ups etc., but the conclusion by them was that this was a huge problem in that there were a lot of HP printers out there - that they were going to give this their top priority - and that there would be a fix for this soon. (I have yet to see a fix.)

  • Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?

We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after
    Any ideas gratefully accepted.

The very first suggestion I have is to move your VM to a more recent update of 1.5.0.
It looks like you are crashing with 5.0u3, and I'm pretty sure 5.0u16 is available. You
don't want to waste your time chasing a bug that's already been fixed.

  • Is Motion a total piece of garbage?

    What do you think guys?
Even when things are running well, there's always some weird glitch or system hang that makes this thing practicly unusable. Like continuous playback, even after the spacebar is hit or the mouse is clicked or the escape button is hit and I have to force quit. Sometimes it won't let me delete layers and I have to quit. Sometimes it won't let me copy layers, between projects and otherwise, and I have to quit. And gosh darn it, sometimes it just up and quits on its own.
There are a limited set of key shortcuts for navigating the timeline (1 frame, 10 frames, next and previous markers, jump to in/out point, jump to begining/end of project, that's it) No zoom in/out (moving the mouse pointer back and forth between that little slider is getting old), no jump to next edit, a hand tool for the timeline would be useful, no way to reliably go to the begining/end of a layer without using the mouse and shift key, and that mini timeline bar below the canvas is useless if your project is longer than a few minutes. Why didn't they just port over the navigation scheme from FCP and have a customizable shortcut layout and make it easy on everyone?
Why doesn't it copy and paste layers directly to where the playhead is, instead of where the layer was copied from? It seems like there is a lot of dragging and dropping necessary to make this program work and I don't know how the rest of you feel, but that's not really how I work.
No copying digits in the inspector to the clipboard, no way to reliably synch graphics to audio because of either audio or frame drop, and now I'm having a synch issue because Motion is incapable of a 23.976 fps frame rate, only 23.98.
This program has the potential to be a really great tool and I know that this is only the second version, but Apple has a bit of a problem with usablility, in my opinion. It seems like they want you to use their products a certain way and if you deviate from that, you will run into problems. There should be at least 3 different ways to do the same thing, like in Photoshop or even FCP for that matter. A lot of their interface design is dumbed down in favor of using a one button mouse all of the time instead of giving users options (context menus anyone?). Really, they should be jacking sucessful design concepts and packing them into every product they make instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every time. Anyone try and use Soundtrack Pro?
Oh, and if anyone has any answers to the issues I'm having in the first three paragraphs, any feedback would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I see your point, but the tool is still very useful
to me. It's hardly a piece of garbage. I still use
After Effects 10% of the time, but Motion with it's
quirks has become my tool of choice for most stuff
    that FCP can't handle.
Maybe I just don't enjoy quirky software. I like it when it works the same every time, rather than trying to figure out what set of operations I just performed produced the glitch I have to deal with now, but thats's just me.
Here is one point that I don't understand:
I'm having a synch issue because Motion is
incapable of a 23.976 fps frame rate, only 23.98.
What kind of work are you doing where this causes the
sync to get messed up? By my math, your sequence
would have to be nearly an hour long before the
    difference would even express itself.
I have a five act doc that was shot in 24p DV, up-resed to HD at 23.976 fps and then down-resed to NTSC quicktime files at the same frame rate to be used as reference for the lower thirds I am creating. The acts range in length from 9 minutes to 30 minutes. The thing is that all they consist of is the base reference movie layer and either 1 text layer or 1 text layer, one still and one mask. Everything synchs up perfectly in Motion, but when I output just the lower thirds with alpha and then drop them into FCP and place them over the same reference movie I used in Motion, which is what is going to happen when the lower thirds are encorporated into the actual upres, the lower thirds don't synch. Specificly, one title takes place at 00:20:09:07 in Motion. That's 1809 seconds, 7 frames. At 23.98 fps that's 43386.82 frames. At 23.976 that's 43379.584 frames, a difference of roughly 7 frames, which means the lower thirds at 23.98 fps is going to shift forward 7 frames, which is about what I've been seeing in FCP. The titles occur later than they should.
The reason the project files are so long is because they have to be. I'm just doing the lower thirds and then handing off the output to someone else to be placed into the final output. There are at least 175-200 titles that need to be in synch and chopping it up and doing it manually after my output is a bit of a headache, about a days worth.
    I don't
believe Motion was intended for editing long
sequences and this could be part of your problem.
Good to know, but everything I've read and heard has led me to belive this was appropriate for longer projects. Guess I was wrong.
I break my Motion projects into small pieces and
reassemble them in FCP. Smaller sequences are easier
for Motion to manage since it uses RAM to cache your
footage. Perhaps some of your freezing problems are
    related to loading long sequences.
Not long sequences. One base reference layer and many small (3-5 sec) text animations. The thing is that Motion will behave itself for a fair amount of time, but then I will give me weird problems for a half and hour. Obviously, I need a better machine (don't we all), but I've used Motion on newer dual processor G5's with a lot of RAM and decent GPU, and it still crashes sporatically. Can't wait for Motion 3.
    Thanks for caring:)

  • Problem with the garbage record getting printed at the beginning

    Hello Friends,
I know that this problem is very difficult to solve without looking at my script and its program. But I will try asking anyways.
I have written the following code (Driver program) which uses to tables ZRAMCUSTMAST AND ZRAMCALLMAST.
ZRAMCUSTMAST has customer details like address etc.,
ZRAMCALLMAST has the call details that each
                 customer has done.
But when I print the details, it prints everything correctly but for each customer it prints some garbage
    values as the first row.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. You can mail me the response also (singer_ram AT yahoo DOT com)

  • Federal court website gives a .pl document which opens as garbage until we manually change it to .pdf, is there any way to get Firefox to do this automatically?

I am using a Mac. When downloading a document from the federal court website using Firefox, we get a .pl document which opens as garbage (in TextEdit) until we manually change it to .pdf, which causes it to open just fine (in Preview). It used to work fine, giving a .pdf document every time, but apparently upgrades to Firefox have removed this functionality. As far as I can tell my computer, an iMac running Mac system OS X 10.10.1, does not recognize the .pl format. Is there any way to get Firefox to automatically convert a downloaded file from .pl format to .pdf format? My friend tells me that Google Chrome downloads these documents with no problem. I would prefer to stick with Firefox but I might have to change if every downloaded document is in an unreadable format.
This is a typical example of what I get when I try to open a .pl document (the pdf version is a one page document using plain English):
    =====
    %PDF-1.5
    %‚„œ”

  • Lots of garbage generated when Image is bound to a property that is null

I noticed something odd -- I've written a program that displays some huge images in the background (1920x1200), but not all the items that are in the database actually have an image. Now, when an item is selected where the background image is null, and I simply set this image, I get a nice fade to black (so far so good).
However, I noticed that as long as this "image" is being displayed something is generating about 1 MB of garbage on the heap every second. As soon as I switch to a real image again, this stops... and it starts again when I switch to the null image.
Anybody notice the same? This seems like it might be a bug -- I'm thinking somekind of stacktrace is generated somewhere in the core but being swallowed.
Workaround is to not set 'null' images I suppose :)

That does seem very odd. Better follow this to make it know:

And besides, if I WANTED NEW I would DOWNLOAD NEW!!!
''[Profanity removed by moderator. Please read [[Forum and chat rules and guidelines]], thanks.]''

This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.
Do a clean reinstall and be sure to remove the Firefox program folder.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • 2.0 software on Edge iPhone turned it into garbage

What is Apple doing? A once great phone has turned into garbage thanks to 2.0.
    1. Touchpad has crappy response - tap and tap and tap and tap, oh is something about to happen, no , tap then tap then tap - give up and reboot. (Reboot, is that a PC term that Apple had begun to emulate?)
    2. View web, turn it landscape, web stays portrait.
    3. Try to open application (native, not third party) - slow as a constipated gorilla.
    4. e-mail tries to connect but can not even when using Wifi
    5. type text in web address bar, or SMS or email - lags longer than an 80 year old woman at the grocery counter looking for pennies to pay for her milk.
    6. Did Apple do this on purpose to force people into buying the 3G version? To force idiots like me who flocked to buy the edge version on its' debut day, the same day Apple probably decided to screw the public by planning the 3G version, and the price cut of the original. To force us into shelling out another $199 to buy the 3G. I'll look hard at Sprint's "Iphone killer" first.
    7. Individual songs skip, fading in and out, bringing back memories of 45's and an old diamond needle
    8. Individual songs repeats, without the repeat option selected. Let me bring out the Victrola and listen to my grandma's 33's and 78's
    8. Is Apple's new ad line going to be, "Hello I'm a Mac...Hello I'm a PC who used to be a Mac."
    9. Apply, Rinse, Repeat - didn't solve anything. I restored the phone to original settings, set it up as a new phone, reloaded songs, contact, calendar and still a phone unworthy of being called an apple product.
    10. Apple - stop screwing with loyal customers. We'll only take it for so long.

That must be something specific to your Edge phone. When I upgraded my Edge phone I did not have any problems whatsoever. All of the native applications seemed to be faster not slower. The downloaded applications worked great. I did not have any problems with the landscape vs portrait on web or any of the applications that use it.
It sounds like you have a hardware problem and not a software problem. I would suggest that you call Applecare and tell them about it or if you are close to an Apple store, take it to the genius bar. You are not experiencing the normal performance of a 2.0 upgrade on the Edge iPhone.

  • High Eden Java Memory Usage/Garbage Collection

    Hi,
I am trying to make sure that my Coldfusion Server is optomised to the max and to find out what is normal limits.
Basically it looks like at times my servers can run slow but it is possible that this is caused by a very old bloated code base.
Jrun can sometimes have very high CPU usage so I purchased Fusion Reactor to see what is going on under the hood.
Here are my current Java settings (running v6u24):
    java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=256m -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch ........
With regards Memory, the only memory that seems to be running a lot of Garbage Collection is the Eden Memory Space. It climbs to nearly 1.2GB in total just under every minute at which time it looks like GC kicks in and the usage drops to about 100MB.
Survivor memory grows to about 80-100MB over the space of 10 minutes but drops to 0 after the scheduled full GC runs. Old Gen memory fluctuates between 225MB and 350MB with small steps (~50MB) up or down when full GC runs every 10 minutes.
I had the heap set to 2GB initally in total giving about 600MB to the Eden Space. When I looked at the graphs from Fusion Reactor I could see that there was (minor) Garbage Collection about 2-3 times a minute when the memory usage maxed out the entire 600MB which seemed a high frequency to my untrained eye. I then upped the memory to 4GB in total (~1.2GB auto given to Eden space) to see the difference and saw that GC happened 1-2 times per minute.
Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often? i.e do these graphs look normal?
Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
Note: These graphs are not from a period where jrun had high CPU.
    Here are the graphs:

    Hi,
    >Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often?
Yes normal to garbage collect Eden often. That is a minor garbage collection.
    >Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Sometimes it is good to set Eden (Eden and its two Survivor Spaces combined make up New or Young Generation part of JVM heap) to a smaller size. I know your thinking - what make it less, but I want to make it bigger. Give less a try (sometimes less = more, bigger not = better) and monitor the situation. I like to use -Xmn switch, some sources say to use other method/s. Perhaps you could try java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -Xmn172m etc. I better mention make a backup copy of jvm.config before applying changes. Having said that now you know how you can set the size to bigger if you want.
I think the JVM is perhaps making some poor decisions with sizing the heap. With Eden growing to 1Gb then being evacuated not many objects are surviving and therefore not being promoted to Old Generation. This ultimately means the object will need to be loaded again latter to Eden rather than being referenced in the Old generation part of the heap. Adds up to poor performance.
    >Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
You are using Parallel garbage collector. Perhaps you could enable that to run multi-threaded reducing the time duration of the garbage collections, jvm args ...-XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=N etc where N = CPU cores (eg quad core = 4).
    HTH, Carl.

  • Incremental Garbage Collector is halting my server for MINUTES at a time.

I have a Java server which services hundreds (currently 300-700 on average, target of 2000+) of simultaneous client connections, with a staggering number of long lived (but not permanent) objects.
The docs for incremental garbage collection state: "The incremental garbage collector, which is off by default, will eliminate occasional garbage-collection pauses during program execution." This is NOT true in my case. During peak load, the Server halts occasionally (once an hour or more) and entire MINUTES tick by. Average wait time is 2.5 - 3.5 minutes, the highest I have seen is 4 minutes, 10 seconds. This is entirely unnacceptable.
The server is on Red Hat Linux 6.2, kernel 2.2.14-5.0, with a gig of RAM. My current command line options are
    java -server -Xincgc -Xms256M -Xmx900M
And I have just added -verbose:gc to help analyze the gc performance. I have read the gc tuning guide at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc/index.html but still feel rather clueless about what is the optimum setup for my particular application.
I will of course start experimenting, but I was hoping to find a "wise old elf" who might give some useful pointers to accelerate the process, seeing as how the Server is already running in a production capacity, time is critical.

Are you using a Java application server like Tomcat, Dynamo, WebLogic etc. ?
In that case consider running several server instances on the machine, with the applicationserver's software load balancer. Find the amount of RAM allocated to the heap per serverinstance where garbage collection runs takes a couple of seconds, and don't allocate more than this to each server. Start as many servers as you have available RAM for.
This is the approach recommended by application server vendors such as BEA http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs61/perform/JVMTuning.html and ATG.
A side benefit of this approach is that in case you get more concurrent users than your computer can handle, you already have the setup for spreading the load over several computers.

You can see that between 12:48am and 9:38am, the Server is pausing for a combined total of TWELVE MINUTES! Often for 2 whole minutes at a time, during which the Server is completely unresponsive.
I have read Sun's GC tuning guide at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc/index.html but it is not much help:
It says "Pauses can be minimized by using a small young generation and incremental collection, at the expense of throughput."
Well, I AM using incremental collection, and the young generation is the default size, which is quite small I believe. (32 MB max?)
It also says "Unless you have problems with pauses, try granting as much memory as possible to the JVM. The default size (64MB) is often too small."
Well I DO have problems with pauses, but I HAVE to allocate a ton of memory. The Server must support hundreds of simultaneous users, each with hundreds of K's of personal, dynamic, temporary data.
It also says "Unless you find problems with excessive major collection or pause times, grant plenty of memory to the young generation. The default MaxNewSize (32MB) is generally too small."
I AM having problems with excessive major collections and pause times, so according to this I should NOT grant more memory to young generation (eden).
What am I left with? Nothing! I am totally out to lunch here. The box this is running on is a dual P3-600 with a gig of RAM and Red Hat 6.2, with Sun JRE 1.3.1_02. My startup command line options are:
    java -server -Xincgc -verbose:gc -Xms256M -Xmx900M
What should I do? The Tuning guide essentially says to screw around with generation sizes, but none of its specific tips seem to apply to me! This is a production server and I am worried about making things worse by playing around, so I was hoping someone out there might have some experience with this and concrete advice before I just start messing around with the memory map. Should I increase the young generation size? Decrease it? Something else altogether? HELP!

With default settings, I am getting horrible performance, under peak load, 25%-50% of server time is being spent with GC, approx. 11,000 minor GCs per hour! And a Full GC every hour or two which takes up several minutes. On average, I am losing 13.09 minutes per hour due to minor GC, and 54.5 seconds to major GC.
I tried your settings, Chuck, and they seemed to be working beautifully at first... minor GCs were now occuring once every few minutes for a couple seconds, instead of 3 times per second for a tenth of a second. Minor GC were now taking 1.06 minutes per hour instead of 13.09, more than a 1300% improvement!
    HOWEVER...
After 7 hours, the Server started getting REALLY slow for no apparent reason. It seemed almost as if reading from sockets was suddenly becoming extremely time intensive. Then I got a HUGE minor GC that took 25.6 seconds. [GC 507410K->478034K(551296K), 25.6328459 secs], then a couple minutes later, the Server CRASHED with this output:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

Yummy. Signal 11's really make my day fun :(. I tried restarting the Server, but it crashed again in the same way 15 minutes later. Then I switched back to default settings and it has run fine all weekend.
The Sig11 makes me think either our C lib is buggy (our Linux distro is getting a bit old), or we have a physical memory problem. Odd that it only shows up when I tried your new settings though...

  • Premiere Pro shuts down while edditing garbage matte

    Hi there,
I'm creating a movie in black and white, with only the person in color. Therefore I'm using a eight or sixteen point garbage matte. For some reason things don't work as the should do, since yesterday evening. I was doing exactly the same as I always did, but right now, when I move an anchor point, a message box pops up, saying: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Pro to shutdown. We will attempt to save your current project." Even when I restart the computer, or Premiere, the same happens.
I'm running Premiere Pro 4.1 (latest update) on Windows Vista, with 2GB of memory. Do you guys know what's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pim

I agree. Two GB of RAM is about what it takes to just run Vista. Memory is very cheap. I'd first run out and flesh out the MoBo with 4GB (32-bit), or more if you're on Vista-64. Fill that puppy up and try again.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
