  • Upgrading from Panter 10.3.9  to Tiger - Need Help

I am trying to upgrade from panter to tiger without success. My 12" powerbook G4 meets exceeds the system requirements and I have plenty of HD space, however the installation fails when verifying the destination volume. My friend suggested that I may need a firmware update to update the Bios for successful installation. I am not mac savvy and do not know what needs to be done. Can someone please give me a helping hand. Thanks.....

Here's the only really useful information on this error and what you can do to solve the problem:
How to Deal with a -9972 Error
    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima
The error message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" is a serious filesystem error in the Mac OS X Core Foundation. The problem can also lead to other critical errors such as "Keys Out of Order," "Invalid node structure" and/or "Invalid sibling link." The causes and scenarios vary. Troubleshooting a solution may depend upon computer configuration and whether the -9972 error is accompanied by other critical errors. This issue can also lead up to a kernel panic. If the error occurs when an external FireWire device is connected, disconnect it until you verify the device's compatibility.
    Symptoms:
In most cases, you are unable to restart from Mac OS X.
    * A volume is grayed out or not mounted with or without a kernel panic.
    * A folder with a flashing question mark may appear.
    * A bad partition map may be reported.
    * A target disk mode solution may not work.
    * Most likely, Disk Utility, Norton Utilities, TechTool and DiskWarrior cannot fix the issues.
    * The high level disk format (Standard format) may unable to perform.
    * You may unable to re-initialize the hard drive.
    * A disk physically malfunctions in the worst case.
Example of an accompanied error message:
DiskWarrior normally fixes 1 to 6, but cannot fix errors 7 to 10 if the symptoms are very bad. There is no definite case.
    01. Volume check failed
    02. Invalid B-tree Header
    03. Invalid map node
    04. Invalid extents entry
    05. Invalid clump size
    06. Incorrect block count file
    07. Invalid node structure
    08. Overlapped extent allocation
    09. Keys Out of Order
    10. Invalid sibling link
    Related documents:

    Possible causes:
    * Third-party FireWire device or enclosure, or other peripheral devices.
    * Third-party mass storage drives or PCI card issues.
    * Incompatible third-party kernel extensions.
    * Mac OS X installer disc is improperly treated.
    Solutions:
If possible and needed, back up data before troubleshooting. Methods (4) and (5) are for Power Mac desktop computers other than G5 models. The best bet is method (4) if you encounter multiple bad errors.
    1. Unplug the power cord. Disconnect all third-party hardware except Apple keyboard and mouse before you start.
    2. Do NOT re-install any third-party software/hardware until you completely solve the issue(s) and carefully investigate the compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x you install.
    3. If another critical error "Invalid sibling link" is detected at any phases, disconnect and reconnect all internal power cords and data cables for hard drives and any ATAPI device. To do so, you may need to read the computer's CIP Instructions in advance. Normally, you do not need to remove third-party RAMs.
    Method 1:
    (1) Start up from Mac OS X 10.3.x Panther Full Install CD or DVD.
    (2) Re-initialize and re-partition the hard drive. RECOMMENDATION: Select "Zero all data" option if "Invalid node structure" or "Keys Out of Order" error is detected.
If this method is of avail, go to Method 2 or greater.
    Method 2:
    (1) Start up in Mac OS 9.2.2 and shut down the computer.
    (2) Start up from a copy of a Disk Warrior bootable CD for Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (3) Run DW to fix the damage(s).
    Method 3:
    (1) Unplug the computer.
    (2) Find a second ATA drive and jumper it as MASTER. Jumper the hard drive in question as SLAVE. Verify the jumper pin settings.
    (3) Install Mac OS 9.2.x system on the MASTER drive, and update it to Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (4) Start up from Mac OS 9.2.2. Re-initialize and re-partition the damaged hard drive with Drive Setup using the "Zero all data" option. Unplug the computer and reconfigure the jumper pin setting on the repaired drive for MASTER and the second drive for SLAVE.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition the repaired drive to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
You may want to try starting up from Mac OS 9.2.x Full Install CD instead of from (2) to (4).
    Method 4:
    (1) Find a desktop computer that has an ATA controller PCI card (SCSI environment) and has two hard drive bays. This will make your damaged drive appear as a quasi-SCSI hard drive. Mac OS 9.2.2 must be pre-installed on the computer. I recommend a host computer that installs an Ultra DMA/xxx or xxx (ATA-x) interface equal to or better than the damaged drive with backwards compatible.
    (2) Set the host computer's primary drive as MASTER and your damaged hard drive as SLAVE and install the damaged drive in the second drive bay of the host computer. Verify properly configured jumper pin settings in advance.
    (3) Start up the host computer from Mac OS 9.2.2. Launch the "Drive Setup" utility. Re-initialize the damaged disk on the second drive using the "Low level format" option. It may take hours but less than "Zero all data" option. Note: Normally, a low level format with a quasi-SCSI drive takes much less (30 - 40%) time than an ATA configuration drive. Note that "Low level format" fixes all difficult logical damage.
    (4) Put the fixed disk back in your computer's drive bay. Re-configure the jumper pin setting to MASTER before you place it into the drive bay of your computer.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition it to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
Note that Panther's Disk Utility does not implement a "Low level format" option.
    Method 5:
If Method 4 does not work or fix the damaged drive, let me know. You may need an advanced technique to fix it if the drive is physically not a problem.
    OPTION:
Purchase a known good hard drive that conforms to your computer's ATA specification. Fix the damaged hard drive some other time. Nowadays, prices of hard drives are inexpensive.

  • Earpiece on new iPhone 4 not working after upgrading to 4.2.1

I purchased my first Apple product (iPhone 4) 3 weeks ago with firmware 4.1. Finally I decided to upgrade to 4.2.1. Now when making a call I can't hear a tone or anyone talking to me. Switching to speaker works fine and so do the earbuds when connected. I read many have had the same issue and they just plugged/unplugged their earbuds a few times. Seems the iPhone forgets that the earbuds were unplugged. I tried the same and it didn't help. There is nothing stuck in the jack either. Now what?

I'll lay odds there's a piece of lint or something stuck in the headphone jack. Take a look and try to get it out with a pin or something. Happens occasionally, pretty much always to men as opposed to women. Mainly because we tend to carry our phones in our pants pockets instead of a purse.

  • Problems upgrading from Dreamweaver 4 to CS3

The website I manage is www.episcopal-dallas.org. Today, I
upgraded from Dreamweaver 4 to CS3. In Design view, I can edit
about half of the pages, but those of the other half (including the
index/home page) have gray backgrounds (with a few exceptions that
have white), and, although I can make changes in the code, I cannot
edit them in Design view. The cursor forms the universal "nicht"
sign — circle with a diagonal slash through it. I can't find
any commonality between the ones that I can edit and the ones I
    can't.
Also, on some of the pages, the navigation panel that is
supposed to be on the left side has ended up above the text of the
main body of the page. Manuals I have say nothing about upgrading
    existing websites.

    Of course it does.

You should never have to do this.
I hope your understanding of this doesn't cause further
    problems for you.

  • This latest version of Firefox is complete pants! Why can I no longer have a nice, tidy little row of icons across the top so that I click and find things at an instance like I could with the Google Toolbar?

This latest version of Firefox is complete pants! Why can I no longer have a nice, tidy little row of icons across the top so that I can click and find things at an instance, like I could with the Google Toolbar?
Example:- I've just spent 20 minutes looking how to 'translate' after I installed that add-on, there it was! A tiny little icon in the bottom right of the screen, I find the new set up very messy and very hard to navigate. Why can't I have the same set up on my toolbar that I've had for the last ten years? It's that bad that I'm even considering going back to I.E.
    Jon T

Thanks but you're only telling me stuff I already know, that dosen't explain how I get the new version of Firefox to look neat and tidy like it always used to. I can no longer have all my icons that I use, I can no longer access things as easily as I could and the whole thing looks very bare and basic now! A bigger mess than even Google Chrome.
I've spent most of this evening trying to get stuff back that is now lost because of this 'upgrade' and I'm now giving up with it. Well done! You've totally ruined what was the best browser for years.

  • Is the upgrade to the 2.33 Ghz Intel chip worth it?

I am going to be buying my first Mac very soon. It will be an iMac and I will use it primarily to power a digital darkroom using PhotoShop initially. Later I may use either Apeture or LightRoom, once they get past version 1 and up to version 2. (I don't care to be on the bleeding edge of software.) I will also use it to manage my music collections using iTunes. I may also use it to run Windows if I can't find suitable Mac versions of certain software, but I think most of my Windows stuff will stay on my Dell laptop. Hopefully, I will keep the iMac a 100% Mac.
Apple charges an extra $250 for the 2.33 Ghz Intel chip and I am wondering what that buys besides an increase of .17 Ghz in speed??? Will it signficatly increase performance using PhotoShop or other image processing software?
    I am NOT a gamer.
Your thoughts on this are appreciated, especially if you have experience with the differences.

Dell   Windows XP   I will be buying an iMac soon to use as a digital darkroom.

a new iMac will still beat the pants off of my buddy's old G5.
Don't like to disillusion you, but my experience has been that this is not something you should count on. I have both a G5 iMac (@ 1.8 Ghtz) and an Intel iMac (@ 2 Ghtz), both with 2 GB of RAM.
The Intel version runs Apple's apps and the Finder noticeably faster than does the G5, because they're "universal binaries" which will run "native" on the Intel. However, many major apps -- for instance, Microsoft Office, Photoshop and most other Adobe products -- are still Power PC apps which run on the Intel version under the Rosetta translator. They're generally about the same speed as on the G5.
My main reason for buying the Intel iMac was to run Windows XP under Parallels, so that I could get decent speed on two Windows-only apps that I need for business. I used to run them, very very slowly, using Virtual PC. They now run more or less full speed -- what a difference. But without this need, I would not UPGRADE yet from a G5 to an Intel, I'd wait until Microsoft and/or Adobe upgrade their products.

  • W500 Windows 7 64 Bit Upgrade Misery :(

My work required that I upgrade to a 64 bit Windows 7.  My W500 was from 9/09.  Never had any issues with it but needed to upgrade.
Holy 2 days of hell.  Upgraded to Windows 7 and have had nothing but nightmares.
Is there a "smooth" path to install Windows 7 64 bit on a W500 from a couple years ago?
Almost every program I try to install, the installer hangs...  Every restart ends with a system hang.  Any suggestions will be incredibly appreciated.

I can second the conclusion that, when installing and updating all the Lenovo drivers and programs for the first time after a bare Windows 7 installation or a factory image restore, it's best to download and install all the the drivers and programs manually, starting with the bios update, the basic chipset and hardware drivers. The System Update program does not seem to get everything installed correctly in the case of such a massive initial update.
The "Driver Matrix" pages for your particular Lenovo machine on the Lenovo Support web site make the downloading reasonably efficient. (Don't forget the "Windows 7 Thinkvantage Experience" package (or whatever it's called), as well as the latest version of Lenovo Enhanced Backup and Restore).
There are some sequencing isssues, meaning that some things have to be installed before others--be prepared to download and read the text notice that accompanies each component to get this sequencing right. (I think this is where the System Update program falls over.) Disable Windows Update while you are doing this! You'll be rebooting the machine a million times, but do it each time an installer want to do it.
Some sequencing tips are given on Lenovo Support's advice for Windows 7 Clean Installation.
Once you've done that, System Update will function quite nicely to pick up future updates.
The final steps are to reenable Windows Update, check for and install all relevant Windows updates, including the optional Windows 7 system stability and program compatibility updates.
If you choose, now install all your major software packages (office suites, etc.) and update them to the most recent level. Verify that everything works.
Oh, once you've done all this labour, use Lenovo "Enhanced Backup & Restore" to create a set of DVD restore discs with the full image of the system you have just spent so much time creating! If you are as crazy as I am, you will then use those same discs immediately to zap your current system drive and verify that the backup discs really do work. Then I make the first "baseline" backup to my external USB drive, and go through the same zap & restore routine. (As I said, I am crazy...)
Realistically, this belt+suspenders approach will take a whole afternoon, but you only have to do it once, and you are then certain that if your pants do fall down, you can quickly put on a new pair...

  • System Upgrade Disaster...

So what happened was that during my "pacman -Syu" I ran out of disk space.  What followed:
I tried to uninstall some packages, and found that any time I tried to run pacman (any options or no options) I get:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/liblzma.so.0: invalid ELF header
I deleted a bunch of accrued garbage, but to no avail,  Then I bravely rebooted, and really got the kick in the pants:
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected.  Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
I am ready to sacrifice a goat, if anyone thinks that will help.  Or if you have a better suggestion, I would be most grateful...

  • Power Mac RAM Upgrade - Why not faster?

I just upgraded my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 from 1GB to 3GB with Crucial memory. The computer booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. The system recognizes the full 3GB. Problem is, I cannot tell the difference in speed, either by "seat of the pants" or by benchmark tests. XBench tested almost exactly the same either way (in fact, it was 1/2 point slower with the 3GB). I also compressed a 2-minute movie from iMovieHD into a Quicktime file. It took the same amount of time with either configuration.
Any thoughts? Is there a different comparison test I should try?
    Thanks.

    Hi
If you have sufficient memory for what you're doing, additional RAM will make little or no difference. You could try using Activity Monitor located in the Applications->Utilities folder to see how much memory is actually being used at any one time. The following document contains more info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
Artificial benchmarks probably won't detect any differences, as the memory footprint of the tests is probably minimal. Likewise movie compression is probably limited by the speed of the processors and/or hard drive more than it is by the amount of memory available.
You should be able to detect a difference when running several memory hungry applications at the same time and switching between them though. The boot up time may be slightly slower with more RAM as a POST (power on self test) is performed.

  • Upgrade graphics card, or add second monitor?

I have an Aperture rebate that needs to be used by the end of this month, but what to spend it on?
I have a dual core 2.3 G5 PM with the stock 6600 graphics card. What would be the better choice, upgrade that graphics card (I have some questions on that, below) or add a second 20" ACD?
    Questions on cards:
    1. The Apple Store is offering two PCI-e cards that appear on the Aperture recommended list: the 7300GT and the X1900XT, but the store says that they're for the Mac Pro. Will they work in a PCI-e PM anyway, or are they really only for Intel boxes?
    2. The 7300GT is cheaper than the 6600. Que?
Colour me unadventurous, but I don't really want to get into flashing cards, or buying unsupported cards (not that I could f=do that from Apple anyway.)
With respect to the second monitor route, anyone had any experience with two 20" ACDs and the 6600? Other than it may be a bit pants with Aperture, what is your experience?
I'm not an Aperture hard core user, in fact I've found it difficult to whip up much enthusiasm for using it at all until recently, so I don't need a killer card like the 4500.

As far as I know there is NO graphics card
upgrade for G5 towers in the Apple Store.
Thanks, that looks like a card upgrade from the store is a no-go then.
    Radeon X800XT,
According to the store, that's AGP.
Looks like my options on the rebate are:
    1. second monitor
    2. Shure earphones to replace the cruddy ipod ones
    3. do nothing and donate the money to Steve's retirement fund.
Not sure how well a second ACD would work with Aperture and my 6600, or whether I want to give Apple another CHF880. And I don't think Steve needs the money.

Since upgrade of IOS, my once dependable camera connection kit will only import landscape photos from my Sony Alpha DSLR, but red exclaimation symbol only for portrait format. Any ideas why?
I am using an ipad2 with the latest operating system upgrade. My problems started with the upgrade to v6. Before that, portrait and landscape pics were uploaded from camera with no problems.

    Hi,
I'm from germany so no 'best buy' but I think I will lock around sleeve/bag for a different product with same measures. Any tip?
The clear plastic case is not what I want. I would like to use the player without such protections. I just want a sleeve to protect the player while its in my jacket/pants.
Btw, i have bought this version: Creative Zen (maybe european version?). I also doesn't seem to have your mentioned sleeve. I also couldn't find it on the website.
    Anyway, thank you,
    Chris

  • IPod no longer works with car stereo since upgraded MBA & iTunes

My iPod classic has worked just fine connected to my car stereo since i bought it last june. I just bought a new Macbook Air (OS 10.7.3) & installed ITUNES 10.6.1. After I synched my ipod for the first time its recognised by the car but i get a "can't read data" message. I re-formatted my ipod but its exactly the same. Do you think its the upgrade- or the cable? Has anyone else found a bug with this version of Itunes or the OS? I have my doubts a cable would make the difference, and my old ipod nano that i haven't synched for a while works fine.

If standalone works fine, then, most likely the 30 pin connect may have some dirt or lint, prevent data transfer.
You can try to blow it clean, if you have a can of compressed air or gas.
Alternatively you can connect it to the car stereo and do the RESET, while connnected.as follows
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
The Reset sequence may send a signal to the Car stereo to do the right thing

  • Brand new IPOD Touch Apps no longer work after upgrading software

I got a Ipod touch for my wife Today at Wal-Mart. I brought it home, connected to wifi and downloaded some apps and also payed for some. They all worked fine. Then I connected to computer to transfer songs. It told me to upgrade the Ipod software so i Did. After it restarted none of the downloaded apps work anymore. I have read MANY MANY MANY discussions on this and there is no fix. I am not wiping out all the songs and reload everything all over again. It will take forever. My wifes BD is Friday and this is making me so mad after I just dropped $300 on this thing. APPLE!!! Where is the fix? I deleted the apps and reinstalled they still don't work. Anybody got this figured out? I am getting ready to get my money back and tell everyone to avoid buying ipod until they get this upgrade bug fixed.
Message was edited by: 2009 IPOD TOUCH

I have the same problem. Brand new two days ago. I synched the touch with Itunes but wasn't hooked up to the internet at the time so didn't do the software upgrade right away. Then I downloaded about a dozen apps (free and paid) with wifi directly to the touch. They all worked fine. Then I plugged it back in to Itunes and had it upgrade it to 3.1.2. It locked up Itunes several times since then and the downloaded apps no longer work (they start to open then disappear).
The problem is, no one is listening to this problem (including Anna above)! Everyone says "just do a hard reboot, or restore to factory settings, reload the apps, etc." I've tried all the standard troubleshooting but none of it fixes this. It sure seems to me this is a problem with 3.1.2 but Apple isn't helping out here. Where are you APPLE? Use some of those outrageous profits you're making to fix the problem you have created. Here's $300 of my hard earned dollars pretty much down the drain.
