7 page layout document - too long?

I am working in Pages '08 in layout format. I have one long textbox, three small textboxes, one pie chart, and some tiny pdf pictures on each page. I am jumping back and forth between this and a Word document copying information in to create a manual. After about an hour of work, the screen just switches to a beautiful series of color - my document in mush form. Thankfully I am saving about every five minutes so I simply restart Pages and open the document back up. This is the third time it's happened.
Is this too big of a file? I saw that someone else had a 200 page document with pictures with no complaint like this so it doesn't seem that it should be overloaded with just seven pages.
Thanks so much for your help. I'm really missing Adobe Pagemaker right now.

Quicktime page loads taking too long

I've got a page I'm building with 10 short mp3 clips. Here's a sample of the code for each clip:

Is there a parameter I can add that would keep the page from preloading all of the files and make it so the file wouldn't actually load until the 'play' button was pressed? The files are all around 600-700kb each which, by themselves don't take too long but all together make the page a little too long to wait for.

let's put it this way. if you do File>Export>Quicktime you'll make a quicktime file with the same compressor as your sequence and it'll render faster. If you select File>Export>Quicktime Conversion you can make a quicktime file with a compression of your choice. (although the conversion process takes time). so you could compress it into a DVCPRO 50 quicktime, or an uncompressed quickime or H.264 quicktime. any of these settings will play in quicktime. These you can select through the options button in the converter window. we just suggest you use Export>Quicktime because it's faster easier and it's useless in your situation to convert.

Page Layout document

I created a single page I want to use as a template ultimately. It is now a word processing document and I need it to be in a page layout document. How do I do that?

I think your only option is to Copy your content and Paste into Text Boxes in PL mode. You can't copy and paste Thumbnails between document types.

I accidentally converted to a page layout document not really understanding what it meant. So the paper i had written and saved many times is not gone and I don't know how to get it back. Please help it is extremely important and I can't write another one.

In Pages '09, how do I remove the header from the first page of the document in a page layout document?

Working Pages '09, I am trying to set up a multi-page document using page layout (not a word processing document, because I'll be using lots of graphics and text boxes), with headers and footers, but no header on the first page, as this will be the title page. The layout>section pane has the 'First page is different' option greyed out (because it's a word processor only option). Help tells me that each page is it's own section in page layout, but there is no way to have one page without a header and all the others with, as far as I can tell. Am I completely missing something or is there a way around this?
Also, I want to do this again for additional chapters in the document (or else, I believe, be forced to manually start page numbering for each chapter in a new document).

Hi, Barry. I don't know why this solution didn't work for me :-\ Does it matter that my page numbers are in the footer and not the header? When I follow your direction, the pages do get numbered differently. My problem occurs with the last step.
1. Open the Inspector. (Check!)
2. Click the Layout button (second from left). (Check!)
3. Click Section. (Check!)
4. Make the two settings shown: (Check!)
5. Go to Page 1 and delete the contents of the Header. (When I do this, the content for all footers is deleted...)

Pages' first page "Templates" is too long with buttons inaccessible

When launching Pages (version 3.0.1), the top page that appears is the template page. It is always too long, going all the way to the bottom of the screen. The choices and buttons at the bottom of the template page are behind the dock and cannot be read or accessed for clicking. I tried hiding the dock and then shrinking the template window upward so that the choices were above the dock, and then showing the dock again. Unfortunately, the next time I launched Pages, the top Template window opened up too long again with the bottom of the page unaccessible behind the dock. This problem does not happen with Numbers or Keynote--the template pages in these applications are always sized just right--above the dock. Any ideas why this is happening and how to permanently fix it?

I spoke with AppleCare and they said this is a known bug that will be fixed.

Adding a Bookmark into a Page Layout document

I cannot insert a bookmark into a Page Layout doc? Only a word processing doc? Garsh that doesn't seem right at all. But the bookmark Plus button and the Insert Menu option are grayed out unless I create a word proc doc - nope I need a layout doc. Help.
Can't search yet - due to site maintenance.

I disagree that the word processing mode was added in iWork '08/Pages 3. Pages 1 & 2 had the default text layer as does the word processing mode. In every way it continues to function just as the single mode available in the prior versions. When page layout mode was added that default text layer was removed requiring the user to put in some type of object - text box, graphic, table, etc. - before text could be entered.
I think of page layout more like AppleWorks' draw, it's a blank slate. Pages' word processing is like AppleWorks word processing in that you can switch to an object mode & place text boxes, etc. as floating or place them inline. I think the Pages programmers added the mode because there were so many posts/complaints with users not understanding that the text layer was always there.

Page loading is too long

I have built a product page with a lot of images and links to external data. the page takes very long to load and is very clunky. Any sugestions on how to resolve without breaking it all out into seperate pages?

The primary reason your site loads slowly is the amount of unnecessary image data.
When an image is brought into Muse via File:Place (or import in a slideshow) the exact size of the image is dictated by it's size in the Muse Design view and Muse will resize the image to that exact size during Publish/Export/Upload and encode as JPEG when possible, otherwise PNG.
When an image is brought in via import to be a background fill, Muse may or may not resize the image smaller. If the image is a background on a object that contains text or has other items on top of it, then the item may change height (or in some cases both height and width) in the browser due to changes in set layout between browsers, dynamic content, or other changes. When using background images the task currently falls to the Muse user to size the image appropriately before importing it into Muse. (That's something I'd like to see us revisit for the next release of Muse.)
Many of the images on your home page are background images that are much larger (in terms of dimensions) than they appear on the web page. There are also a few images with transparent masks that result in the images being export as PNG. If these images where opaque (with white backgrounds) Muse could convert them to JPEG and they'd likely be 1/5th their current file size, or less. If they are resized to the pixel dimensions they're being used at in Muse, they'd likely drop by an additional factor of 10 (or more) in size.
For example, the Mirage Tandem Island sailboard image (tendem-island-studio-3-4-full.png) on the home page is currently a 3.1 Mb PNG image that 2177x3000 pixels in dimensions. If a white background is added to the image and it's resized to 135x186 (the size it's being used at) and Saved for Web from Photoshop as a high quality JPEG the new file is 7k.

Page Layout starting too low?

I have opened a template and it has what looks like a header and I can change the vertical height in the inspector on the first tab "headers". that is easy. Then there is a big gap. Then the page content starts and I can move this down the page in the inspector using the Layout Inspector, but it is set to "Before 0" and I cannot move it any higher up the page. It makes no sense to me at all.
When I fold letters for envelopes the address is to low to see through the windows.
Any suggestions, I though Apple products were supposed to be intuitive?

The 2 modes are announced in the templates.
The gap maybe because you have typed several returns in the header or have something large in the header that has caused it to grow.
To see clearly what is happening:
+Menu > View > Show Layout / Invisibles+
To make the address box float, select it and go:
+Inspector > Wrap > Floating (doesn't move with text)+ or +click on it > Cut > Paste+
You have to be careful with Pages that the paste doesn't go back into the text. It pays to click away out into the margin where there is nothing. I find this very annoying. Pages desperately needs a direct selection tool but Apple won't give us one, just as they wouldn't give us a multi-button mouse for decades.
You choose the mode when you pick either a WP or Layout mode template.
The 2 work slightly differently, so you need to "choose wisely" (pick the humble looking cup or you will desiccate and crumble to dust).
*Word Processing mode* forces most text into the page margins, flows from page to page and has sections. Good for letters and reports
Layout is much more free form, you have to create each page separately with mostly floating text and image boxes. Text boxes need to be linked if the text flows from one page to another. This is better for designed material like brochures and newsletters etc.

I just updated to firefox 4. i cant send/reply to messages in hotmail or other websites that i have profiles on which have messageing applications. browser also redirects me to random pages and takes too long to load.

I have since removed 4 and gone back to firefox 3, but the problem still exists. Im having issues with Internet Explorer too.
This is an example of the script that fills the ENTIRE webpage, when i try to send/reply to messages, not only in hotmail, but any site that you can send email from.

I don't have any netflix add ons or extensions installed. I only have necessary plug ins installed. I have turned off all add ons and restarted so this issue is not related to an add on, plug in or extension. I also can rule out my dsl provider as I have hooked my pc up to other family members connections with the same provider on the same server and it did the same thing, However their pc has no issue. I have taken my pc to 3 technicians and there are no problems they can find with my registry or any infections or spyware. The PC does the same thing on their connections.All hardware passes every test they can throw at it. I have tried other browsers and reinstalling this one as well and the same thing happens. This really is mind boggling. I have ATT/uverse beta 6.0. There should be no delay in starting up my browser. After startup, it works great no problems but the speed starting up is on par with old fashioned dial up right now. I have 3 gigs of ram available and I have 85 percent capacity left on hard drive , processor speed of 3.4 with dual core processor. Makes no sense at all.

Why am I getting a message that says "Page is taking too long to load"? And then it gives me a stripped down version of the page. BUT it always works fine in Safari, AND I have a 15MBPS Internet connection?

It routinely affects the most frequent sites I visit: odesk.com, batchbook.com, google reader. They aren't bandwidth intensive sites, and as I mentioned I have a really fast internet connection. Sometimes refreshing the page helps. Other times it doesn't and I have to use Safari.

Is it possible to change a document from Page Layout to Word Processing?

I just downloaded and launched the Pages 4.0.4 update, which adds the option of exporting to ePub. Unfortunately Pages won't export a Page Layout document to ePub.
Is there any way to change the type of document or would it be easier to just create a new document and paste everything from one to the other. This is a newsletter document that gets published monthly with new content so changing from one format to the other oughtn't bring too many problems.

I know that floating objects isn't supported in WP and I think there are a couple of other things but I can't recall off the top of my head.
I remember that I started using it in the WP mode when I first put together this monthly newsletter and ran into some problems, and switching to Layout took care of those problems.
I've nothing against the WP mode, in fact Iuse it all the time for more traditional WP jobs. It's just that I found the Layout mode to be more suited to, well, laying out. I come from the really old school of physically cutting and pasting typewritten stuff and Zip-a-tone line art graphics onto a large sheet of paper lined with a "non-photo" blue grid. The person who actually printed it took a picture of these pages and used the resulting page as a lithograph master, using real (ugh!) viscous ink rather than toner. So having the option of moving objects around and flowing text around graphics is appealing. Let me know in a PM if you want a Pages file of one of these issues.

Re Setting up document from scratch using Page Layout Mode

I want to design a page from scratch. However, the column mode is grayed out and the program won't let me create columns. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
You need to add a text box first. Then, with the cursor in the text box, you can change the number of columns. Without a text box, there is nothing to apply columns to in a page layout document.

WRT54GS2 - Page taking too long to load?

Recently our Internet Service Provider turned our internet back on. About a day or two after using the internet, I've been noticing problems with slow internet connection. At times it will load fast, and other times it'll take a little bit too long to load.
For example, I had a couple tabs open this morning and tried to get on a website in a different tab. The page was taking so long to load that it gave up and I got the message "Unable to connect to the Internet".
But I have internet.
On my taskbar, there's an icon in the bottom right corner showing that I have internet connection.
Other times I'll try to load a page and it's just blank, and in the corner of the page's tab, there's just an icon of a white sheet of paper followed by the web title.
How come some pages are taking too long to load and others are loading just fine?
Additional detail if it helps:
I unplugged the power cord from my router and plugged it back in to try and fix it and that didn't work.
My second and third attempt, I refreshed my router. Still nothing.
Also, I have a secure network, password protected.
There have been no severe storms recently that could have messed with the router.
What can I do to fix this issue of a slow loading page?

Hi ashtonlevry, it looks like your router has a messed up settings right now. That could be because you had it on stand by for a while since you said that your ISP has just turned your connection back on.
It's actually best for you to just reset the device back to the default settings and reinstall it afterwards.
To do the proper reset :
1. Press and hold the reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds while the device is on.
2. Release the button and unplug or power off the device.
Once done, reinstall the settings.
