7-pass erase: did it work?

Hello, I posted this question at the end of another thread, but I thought I'd start a new one..
I'm selling my old iMac G5 20" (purchased in '05) and erasing personal data for security reasons, etc..
I booted from install disk and set my mac to 7-pass erase. It said it would take 7 hours so I watched it for an hour or so to make sure the bar was moving, then went to bed.
In the morning it was on the Tiger install screen instead of disk utility. I went back into disk utility and the Drive was listed on the left, but there was no "Macintosh HD" volume (which I specified before erase) listed.
I'm not sure it completed the erase or not
Does it restart itself after completion? Should I erase once more?
Since I bought it i've gotten power supply and HD replaced..
thanks
Darren

If your drive doesn't appear, then it has been erased. You can install Tiger and happily send your machine on its way.

My iPad is disabled, with many attempts of trying to connect it to itunes it did not work. I decided to log in icloud and erase the iPad since i had no important things in it, but that also didn't work. It's still disabled. HELP PLEASE!

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • Disk Utility: Differences between "Zero Out Data" and "7-Pass Erase"?

I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a significant difference between the "Zero Out Data" erase option in Disk Utility (specifically Disk Utility 10.5.5), and the "7-Pass Erase" and "35-Pass Erase" options in same software.
Here's why I'm asking: I have a co-worker with an iMac G5 20" 1.8GHz with 160GB internal hard drive. As a result of the power supply overheating a week ago due to dust, some hard drive problems resulted. I'm trying to assess whether these are 'soft' formatting problems that can be recovered from, or 'hard' problems requiring replacement of the hard drive and/or power supply.
Following the failure, I removed the dust and restored the iMac to servicable form. The power supply seems to be OK now. The next thing was to attempt to recover as much data as possible from the 160GB, as the last full backup was a week old. Carbon Copy Cloner, shell copy via 'sudo cp -p -R -v', Finder copy, and DiskWarrior recovery all met with problems. TechTool Pro identified a huge swatch of unreadable sectors during repeated surface scans. Unfortunately, these unreadable sectors were located midway in the OSX boot partition (an 80GB partition), and not in the other 80GB partition devoted to lower priority video data.
When I was satisfied I had backed up the data to the best of my abilities, I next set out to reformat the drive and see if the bad sectors could be eliminated or remapped out of existence. I did a "Zero Out Data" erasure in Disk Utility (with no errors during the erase), but TechTool Pro showed the bad sectors persisted in equal strength at the same location. I next executed a sixteen hour "7-Pass Erase" (again no errors, and confirming that it takes about an hour per 10GB). The next day when I ran TechTool pro, all of the sector errors had disappeared. I'm a bit perplexed as to why the "7-Pass Erase" seems to have recovered the use of the drive. Is it possible that there are simply thousands of bad sectors now remapped that I'm not seeing? [If so, how do I check for this?] TechTool Pro has not reported any S.M.A.R.T. issues to date on the drive. What am I to make of that?
There are some related threads I've checked into, but I'm not sure how to properly assess my situation based on this information:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=232007>
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=138559>

Since the iMac has three weeks left on it's one year warranty, and I've already moved the user to another machine temporarily, I'm thinking that the smart thing to so is to send it in to Apple to have them look at the power supply and hard drive. That way, when it returns, even if there is still a lingering hardware problem, at least it will be covered under warranty for another 90 days.
    Any thoughts?
    iMac G5 20" 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25GB RAM, 160GB hard disk, SuperDrive

    HI, Bret.
The only differences between "Zero Out Data", "7-Pass Erase", and "35-Pass Erase" are the number of times a binary zero is written to every bit on the disk. "Zero Out Data" writes a binary zero once, whereas the 7- and 35-Pass options write a zero seven and 35 times, respectively.
Technically, one pass with Zero Out Data should be sufficient to map bad sectors out of service, a process also known as sparing. If a bad sector is encountered, it is both marked as "in use" in the directory's allocation table and added to the directory's "bad blocks file."
My understanding is that the Surface Scan of Tech Tool Pro should identify bad sectors every time it is run unless the bad sectors have been locked out by the drive controller of the ATA drive itself. This is because Surface Scan checks the entire surface of the disk.
What may have happened is that running "Zero Out Data" spared the bad blocks from a directory standpoint, but did not result in the drive's controller locking out those sectors for reasons detailed in the "Surface Scan" section of the Tech Tool Pro manual. However, the 7-Pass Erase may have resulted in the drive's controller locking out the bad sectors and why Surface Scan did not pick them up after such.
Given the problems you described, I concur with your plan to have Apple check the affected computer. You might also want to consider purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan for that Mac: I recommend and buy these for all my Macs.
For some additional information on bad sectors, see the "Bad Sectors" section of my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
    Good luck!

I am on windows 7 and I upgraded to the newest verison of firefox and now it will not open. I have removed firefox completely and uploaded it again and that did not work. I then made sure it could get through my firewall and that did not work. So my latest attempt I removed firefox 10 again and uploaded the beta version hoping that would do it and once again nothing. It will not open at all. Please help - is there a live chat or a number to talk to someone at Firefox?

I think when uninstalling you may also have to choose (tick) to delete the preferences and other personal data like the bookmarks, stored passwords etc. to erase completely. If you are installing afresh, please try right-clicking on the file and '''Run as administrator''' to install. And when uninstalling, please also make sure choose to delete all data and also manually delete any '''Mozilla''', '''Mozilla Firefox''' or '''Firefox''' from %appdata%, %localappdata% and %programfiles%. You can open a location by typing for eg. %appdata% in the '''Run''' box (Windows key + R). You may also have to check the '''VirtualStore''' folder in %localappdata%. Files in the VirtualStore can be problematic. I think a clean installation may help.

  • HT1212 I just updated my Ipad 2 to IOS7, now it is asking me for a passcode. I never set a passcode on my Ipad, so how can I enter a passcode. I tried using the OIS7 passcode I use on my Iphone  and it did not work and now my Ipad is disabled

I just updated my Ipad 2 to IOS 7, now it is asking me for a passcode. I never set a passcode on my Ipad, so how can I enter a passcode. Earlier today I upgraded my Iphone 5 to IOS 7 and it asked me to set a passcode, which now works fine on my Phone. I  tried using the OIS7 passcode I use on my Iphone 5 and it did not work and now my Ipad is disabled. Both devices are on icloud and share the same apple id. The Ipad screen says slide to set up but then there is a prompt for passcode, not for setting up passcode

I called Apple Support and a supervisor helped resolve this for me on my iPad. I suggest calling them for help as this is obviously an issue with the iOS 7 update - she helped me without charge. I could be missing something in my upcoming description, so do not take this as complete - call them.
I had to update iTunes on my Mac Air to the latest version, and I had an iCloud backup from the day I updated to iOS7. Have iTunes open but do NOT connect your iPad yet. Shut down the iPad. Then press/hold the Home key on the iPad while you connect the USB from the iPad to the computer (an image of the USB cable appeared on the iPad). Follow the prompts in iTunes to restore and then backup using iCloud. When the iPad rebooted again to do the backup install, I got the same pass code issue and iTunes would not recognize the iPad without entering a pass code. I disconnected the iPad, turned it off, pressed the Home key while connecting the USB cable. When I did the restore and backup from iCloud the second time, it worked without the pass code issue occurring.

  • Can Disk Utility's seven-pass Erase feature do unfixable damage?

I have begun posting about this under a different HD topic, but thought I would open a new thread as this would seem to be an important issue not much remarked on. If anyone has any ideas how to fix this, they are most welcome. First, my cautionary tale.
About ten days ago I removed a lot of financial data from my laptop. I also had consolidated all my passwords into a program called Pastor, so I removed the other insecure files where this info was previously stored (like from my email client, and from a word file). When I emptied the Trash, however, I neglected to use the Secure Empty function, and was suddenly seized with anxiety lest my laptop fall into the wrong hands. So I opened up Disk Utility, and clicked on Erase Free Space, using the 7-pass process which is highly secure.
DU warns you that this process will take 7 times longer than the single-pass erase (makes sense), and when it started up, it gave an estimated time as 4hrs something. When I got up next morning, some 14 hours having passed, it was still working. I just couldn't wait any longer and hit the Stop button. A warning came up saying, "Interrupting this operation may damage a disk or render it unusable." That sounded so extreme that I discounted it. I thought Apple was being a bit Nervous Nellie about it--I mean, all it's doing is writing zeros all over the thing, what's the big deal? BAD IDEA.
What I didn't understand was that the seven-pass process doesn't empty your HD, it fills it up. With zeros, to be sure, but it fills it up. Upon completion, if I understand correctly, it resets itself so that all those zeros are read as empty space. If you interrupt it before completion, it does not reset and sees all that space as full. NOT GOOD.
My HD was now sluggish, programs were quitting unexpectedly, some wouldn't start, and others gave the Error-50 message. Worst of all, Word was saying "can't create or save this file because memory is almost full" or "Cannot save file. Your disk may be damaged or write-protected." And yet the system profile indicates 40GB of free space.
I have tried the following: Repair Permissions (from the Home HD); repeating the Erase procedure using single-pass to completeion; resetting PRAM; Safe Boot and then Repairing Permissions from within Safe Mode; changing Startup Disk to my external and running Repair Disk and Repair Permissions from there; rebooting and running Repair Permissions from the Home drive once more.
That was my latest attack on the problem. Repair Disk is finding no problems, and Repair Permissions is finding nothing to repair. At this moment, the computer seems okay, and maybe this is over. But several times in the past week it has seemed okay only for the problems to start up again, which is why I'm writing this now in case I'm looking at complete drive failure in a day or two. Here are my questions:
Has anyone here had experience with an aborted 7-pass Erase function? Does it truly damage the disk?
Should I try running the 7-pass Erase again, this time letting it go to completion no matter how long it takes? (In order to make sure it properly resets.) Or is that risking making things worse?
Is there some other diagnostic test I cam make to determine just wherein the problem lies?
Am I looking at buying a new HD (the current one was expensive and is only a year old)?
I always get good advice from this forum, so I'm hoping someone knows what to do. Any advice much appreciated.
    Giles

DiskWarrior is your best bet for curing Disk Problems that nothing else can.
Other than that, if you can afford to erase and reinstall...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Erase Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to have a clean install.

    There are several possibilities.
    1. You do not have contiguous free disk space.
    2. BCA has failed, or you may have a Fusion drive which is causing problems.
    3. You have incorrect permissions on the disk.
    4. Can you boot in OS X Safe Mode - OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support?

This does help me because I am pondering on wether to buy an airport extreme to solve my ipad 2 connection woes.  I have an extremely old router dLink 524....but I have NEVER had any problems with it at all ever.  My xbox connected great to it and netflix ran flawless through my xbox.....now I have an ipad2 and an apple tv and they are BOTH having horrible connection problems.  I have read most of the forums on how to fix it by changing the settings on my router but since mine is so old I couldn't do some of the suggested solutions.  So here I am debating on whether to spend all this $ on an airport extreme?  I am just hoping that if I go and purchase this, my connectivity issues problems will go away like yours did.  Just wondering if you have ATV as well and if the AE solved its problems?  I have read about AE solving ipad2 wifi problems, I'm just hoping it will solve my ATV as well.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Background Eraser Tool Not Working

I downloaded the CC 2014 update last week for all of my Adobe products. I've had no trouble with them except for the background eraser tool in Photoshop.
I open a photo and try and erase the background (all of the same settings as I used before) and it's really laggy. You can't drag the eraser, only erase in single points. I have found that by using the standard eraser first, then the background eraser, it will work for about 40 minutes, before stopping again. I then have to restart my computer to get it to work again.
As you can imagine, this is really frustrating. I can't figure out why it's doing this, and neither can my company's IT department. It's not maxing out the RAM or peaking the CPU, so they're pretty sure it's an issue with PS.
I have tried uninstalling, running the CC Cleaner tool, and then re-installing, but that hasn't fixed it.
Is anyone else having this problem? How did you fix it?
    Emily

Adobe finally admits that this issue is a known issue. They tried to blame it on an outdated graphics card driver (see above), but mine was current. After I headed off all of their illogical excuses, one by one, they finally sent me an email stating the issue is definitely on their end and they were able to replicate it on their end - contrary to a previous email in which they attempted to shift blame on my end. I have to say Adobe gave all appearances that they are dismissive and in denial about it - until today. Once again, they escalated the issue (Level 2 - whatever that means). I'm not holding my breath. Thoroughly frustrated with how Adobe refused to take ownership of this until I had them corralled. And yes - I did let them know I was not pleased. Very disappointed with Adobe support. I invested a lot of time in previous support sessions, and the issue is still not resolved.

You will need to use an external DVD drive to run the disc installer that came you your machine. You can also do it with another Mac using the Remote Install Max OS X app. Finely, if you have access to another computer, you could burn the install image on a USB thumb drive, boot from that, erase the drive and run the installer.

  • Broadband did not work for days

my broadband did not work for days. I spent two lengthy periods of time on the phone to sky, once fo 1.5 hrs and the other time for 1 hour. Both phone calls achieved nothing. Eventually the internet started working again. The sky service status online advised that my area had no problems. The service from sky has been incredibly rubbish and has made me very angry. In order to get myself online i had to pay BT Wifi £8 for a day pass. Sky have been very generous and have compensated me 62 pence for the time I have been without the internet. My question to sky is..... will youplease refund me the £8 I have spent and give me some sort of compensation for the dismal service provided. I have tried to call calling you this morning but you phone is engaged, I tired emailin gyou but you have no email, I tried the live chat, but it is busy. The forum is the only place I can go.

Sky don't post here and won't respond to you here. The forum is customer to customer support only.
    Official complaints process as below:
    http://help.sky.com/articles/how-to-make-a-complaint
Sky are under no obligation to compensate you for the loss of service and the 62p is, I assume, the cost of your package for the days it was not working.

  • Sync did not work on new computer and original computer is broken.

I always synced Firefox on my original computer, clicking it once a day on the little menu on the top right, on the sync buttton with my e-mail beside it. I had all options checked (passwords, history, bookmarks, etc). Then, my computer broke, and it is a hard drive problem so it will come back completely erased.
Now, I accessed another computer on Firefox and Sync did not work at all. None of my information was saved, even when I click on Sync.
Both computers are Macs, one running on 10.6.8 and the other (broken) ran on Yosemite. Both had Firefox on the New Sync.
    Please and thanks.

This game was designed for Windows 95. Many older games wont run under the NT kernel (under XP and Vista) unless you use emulation such as DOSBox.
You could try setting the game to run in Windows 98 compatibility mode (Right click the games EXE file, choose Properties -> Compatibility Tab).
Otherwise you may need to install Win95/98, and possibly use an older Video Card since the display drivers change so rapidly and drop legacy features not used anymore.

All my music was on prior to syncing. The sync deleted all my music. I can now no longer add any music. I have the "sync music" checked. Restoring factory settings did not work. Any thoughts?

When you synced with iTunes It would have tried to replace the music on the iPhone with what is on the computer. which is what happens when you sync with iTunes.
If the songs are purchased you can re-downloaded them Pretty easily. You mentioned that you still see the songs and that you could not play them. Do they have a Cloud symbol next to them? If so this means that you can download them but that they are not on the device.

  • I recently tried to burn some photos to a disc.  It did not work, but then I ended up with a .fpbf folder on my desktop.  Can't trash it, and when trying to burn again, I get this "... can't be burned because the original items can't be found". Help???

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work.  Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it.  I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes.  Doing so, does nothing at all.  And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?".   When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD.  In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop.  I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?
    Thank you.

    Beavis2084,
Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
    Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).
I don't know what to do anymore...
