70 mbps through wired, BUT 18 mbps through wireless? (WRT300N v1.1 )

Hey I just got my cable speed upgraded and was doing some speedtests. My equipment is
Netgear CMD311 Modem
Linksys WRT300N v1.1 Wireless N Router
When I test ethernet, it gets very good like 75 mbps, but through wireless it gets 20mbps on my laptop and more like 13 mbps on my desktop wireless.
Both computers were in very close range to the router (like 20 feet)
I know wired is much better but it shouldn't be losing THIS much should it?
Both computers have wireless N adapters
Any ideas on how to fix?
Thank you

Hi, does the figure you have posted correspond to the actual internet speed or to a link/card speed? It does seem though that there is big discrepancy with the figures, so you need to optimize the router’s wireless settings. Upgrade the router to the latest firmware and reset the router afterwards. You can then improve the signal coming from the router by using a non-overlapping channel. Use a wifi analyzer like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ to help you select the best channel. Another way to improve the signal is by relocating the router to a more central and elevated location. Do not place the router in a glass or metallic surface to avoid wireless interference. Lastly, change the router’s advanced wireless settings (using these values: beacon 50; dtim 3, frag 2304, rts 2305) to help improve the router’s transfer rate.

  • RMI not working through Wireless LAN

I'm customizing an application which heavily uses RMI. This works fine wired, but when the user connects from a laptop through certain wireless LAN cards, objects sent via RMI never arrived. Our network sniffer revealed that packets apparently used for RMI up to 17K in size are failing. According to our networking guy, the IEEE says packets should be under 9K. Is the packet size used by RMI configurable? Is it really violating an IEEE standard?
    Thanks.

At the risk of wading into an area with limited knowledge, I'd say that RMI is not the place to look. The problem sounds like it is in your TCP/IP stack somewhere, because that's where packet sizes are supposed to be negotiated. (With a sniffer you typically look at transmitted packets, not application blocks; the TCP/IP sender is supposed to packetize as appropriate, and the TCP/IP receiver is supposed to reassemble.)

  • HP Photosmart Plus B209a is no longer printing through wireless connection.  Appreciate any suggestions...

Hello.  My HP Photosmart Plus B209a all in one printer stopped working through wireless connection yesterday.  I have tried to delete the printer and reinstall using HP Setup Assistant, but when I attempt to configure the device for a wireless network, the HP Setup Assistant quits unexpectedly. I can succesfully set up the printer, but only for use with a USB cable.  I noticed that there was an HP printer software update installed yesterday version 2.16.1. Could this have anything to do with it?  I read something about airprint in the support discussions but I dont see the nearby printer option anywhere?  I checked the list of compatible printers and mine is on there so I am not sure what I am missing here.  I would hate to go out and buy a new printer.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I have the same printer but my problem stems from installing a new router. I went through the exact same steps that you did and the HP Installer crashed on me 5 different times at the exact same spot. I called HP and got through to them and after 15 minutes he informed me that this particulart printer is no longer "supported" and software is not available. I told him that I downloaded the update that was available today. He was no help whatsoever. I also can print via USB but that is not at all what I want. The downside of this printer anyways is that it is not Airprint compatible. So, its either reinstall the old router or buy a new printer. This *****!

  • P1606dn prints when connected wired but not when wireless

    Hi
I have setup above printer as a network printer connected to a wireless router and 2-4 computer. Only the computer that is directly connected to the router by wire will print. All others can see the printer through wireless connection but printjobs stay in queue. I have removed the tick from the birectional printing, have stopped and restarted the sppoler and restarted the wirelss computer, but the printjobs stay in the queue until I manually remove them from the queue.
I am at wits end, and do not know what to try to get this printer work on the other cimputers.
Any advisae that may solve this problem is hugely appreciated.

Sorry that you are having problems with wireless printing. You can run the print and scan doctor and check the results.

It may be a anti-virus or a firewall that is blocking it. Try to disable it and see if that works for you.

  • MF4890dw not scanning through wireless

I use iMac with OSX 10.9.2.  I installed latest version of MF Toolbox, upgraded the firmware to 15.04.  I can scan with USB. Wireless works because I can print with wireless.  However, when I disconnect USB and try to scan through wireless network, either from iMac or from MF4890dw, it will scan the first page and hangs for a while, then MF2890 will show "An error has occurred [close]"   and the computer will pop up an error window:
    "Cannot communicate with the scanner.
The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off.
Check the scanner status and try again.
    Scanner driver will be terminated.
    Error code: 200010"
MF4890dw is communicating with iMac because it will scan the first page and it will tell me to put paper in the feeder.
    Any help is appreciated.

I'm having the same error on my 4880 wireless. It previews the scan but it comes up with that **bleep** error. Why hasn't the tech responded? Clearly his generic answer didn't help.

  • WRTU54G slow speed through wireless.

    Hello
I recently set up this router above and the speeds through wireless are about 1/3rd of the speed when connected through cable. Signal is strong and set to channel 11. No home phone whatsoever on that frequency. I'm also using the mixed wireless mode. Any ideas before I put it on craigslist? The router is new. Firmware is 1.00.15
    Thank you

    Try this,
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.0.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
Check the Wireless Connection status, if it gives you 54MB/sec of Speed then it should be fine...

  • Intermittent IP Address through Wireless

I am having problems maintaining an IP address to PC's connected to network through wireless.
Setup: Comcast cable modem into Linksys BEFSR11 cable router.  Three PC's connected through CAT 5 to this router.  Linksys WAP54G wireless routed connected to BEDSR11 router by CAT 5.  Three laptops + one desktop connected through the wireless router.  All working for a couple of years.
The wireless WAP54G router is located on third floor.  One desktop + one laptop is used in the basement two floors below.  This has caused some intermittent range problems.
Recent Change: Installed 6 weeks ago a Linksys WRE54G range extender in the basement to boost the signal.  Setup up and working fine.
Issue: Approximately once or twice a week one of the PC's connected through the wireless network will lose its IP address.  Most often when just rebooted.
Work-a-Round: Only way to resolve is to shut down every PC on the network (wireless or hardwired) and shutdown the extender, wireless router, & regular router.  Then restart in the order of BEFSR11, WAP54G, WRE54G.  After which all PC's can be booted and all will pickup up an IP fine.
Would like to find a solution that does not involve rebooting the entire network as this is about a 20 minutes process.  Any feedback would be helpful.  Thanks!

If earlier the connection is working fine...... check the Firmware of the Range Extender ..... Also make sure that after upgrade you will reset & reconfigure the router.....

Same problem here, with Windows 7.  Appeared out of nowhere.  Reinstalling drivers and MF Toolbox did not help.

    You can try:
    - reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off an then backon your router

  • Cannot print from computer but I can print wireless

I just connected this printer and I cannot print from my computer but I can print wireless from my phone.

    Hello dfreed,
You can try some simple steps:
    Power your printer off.
Unplug your router, and your modem.
Plug your modem in and allow it to power on fully.
Plug your router in and allow it to power on fully.
    Power your printer on.
Refresh the HP ePrint Center site and verify that your printer has a status of "Connected" and "Ready".
Some internet providers' modems are not always the most friendly to power off and on, so I understand if you need to skip that step.
Please post again if any steps need any elaboration.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!
Although I work for HP, my posts and replies are my own opinion and not those of HP.

  • Can't see other computers on network through wireless/wired OK

Our wireless clients that connect through our AP541N cannot see other computers on the network.  They can ping other computers by IP and host name and access the internet OK.  Mapped network drives can be connected initially but are very unreliable and always end up disconnecting.  Restarting the computer does not help.  When these computers are wired they see the network as expected.  Does anyone know why my wireless network would behave differently then the wired?  The wired and wireless networks are on the same VLAN.  The wireless clients are all Windows 7 systems. Thanks.

    Hi Andy,
Thank you for posting. Go to Wireless Network Setup (VAPs) and see if Station Isolation is enabled for the SSID in question. From the Help menu:
When Station Isolation is disabled, wireless clients can communicate with one another normally by sending traffic through the AP.
When Station Isolation is enabled, the AP blocks communication between wireless clients on the same VAP. The AP still allows data traffic between its wireless clients and wired devices on the network, across a WDS link, and with other wireless clients associated with a different VAP.
