700kb free hard drive space!?!?!?

well, i had an issue last night. went to copy something, and didn't have enough har drive space. forced me to clean up and organize myself though. but either way, wasn't my problem. my home drive, was 346gb, and last i checked, i had 90+ free, but not last night. i tried to add up all the folders i had that should take space to 204gb
i had to run my file browser (konqueror) as admin, or root, whatever. and checked the space on the wifes user account, and it was taking up all the space, but when i went in and checked her personal files, there was only 5
anyway, ended up, being a xinit something error file, that somehow bloated itself. so i got rid of it, and everything normal.
im just looking for some insight as to what could have caused that?

it seems it is happening again, theres an .xsession-errors-:2 thats currently 400~mb
here's where it seems to go bad

and the rest of it almost is the malformed swf etc etc. so wtf is that?
the other problem i've been having, is my system seems to freeze sometimes, usually after the wifes been on it. when i'm on it, i don't have problems, i figured with little access to anything, and not being able to install activex controls, since its linux, it should be pretty well dummy proofed from her.
maybe thats why, she's doing something thats building up those log files. wonder if i could disable xsession logging under her account al together, or bad idea?

  • Free hard drive space suddenly increased

I was in Finder and just noticed that my MBP's free hard drive space increased from ~249GB to 317GB (68 gigs!!) within the past week. I haven't deleted anything major from my computer... Any ideas why this might have happened? Is there a way I can find out what may have been deleted?

If you use Time Machine, it's probably OSX deleting expired "Local snapshots."   See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

Sounds like the Time Machine Local Backup.  Try turning Time Machine Off in System Preferences to verify.
See: OS X Lion: About Time Machine's "local snapshots" on portable Macs
    But, your real problem is
I forgot to mention that I tried to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk, but it cannot. I get red errors that say the MacHD is corrupt and needs to be repaired. It says that in order to do this I need to use the Disk Utility on the install disk, but Lion doesn't have one!
Boot into Lion's Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot), select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click [Repair Disk]

  • Is there any application or plug in that anyone knows of that could tell me how much free hard drive space i have left on my mac? Thanks so much. . .

I'm looking for an application or plug in that can tell me how much free space I have available on my hard drive left for my MacBook Air, thanks so much!

The other way to do this is to choose About this Mac under the Apple menu.  When the window appears, click on More Info, and then choose Storage from the selection of tabs at the top.

  • Free Hard Drive Space on a new MB

I'm about to get a Black MB and was wondering how much of the hard drive is being used with programes and the OS and how much free space can i expect?

There are a number of threads posted about this. At least three have been active in the past day. So they're not too deep.
You'll probably lose around 15-20gb of the advertised space to trial software, language packs and printer drivers - yadda, yadda.
It would be wise to do a clean install of OS X right when you get it. Leaving out the trial software, iDVD, GarageBand, any language packs you won't use, any printers you won't use out will give you back probably around 6gb. Maybe more.

  • Where is my free hard drive space

I have a 120gb hard drive on my macbook. It only says that I have 1.5gb of free space left. However when I add up the space taken by the top folders (Applications, Developer, Library, System and Users) I come to a total of about 63 gb) Where is the rest of the free space?
    Thanks.

Well, having a Mactop that's got only a 40GB drive (but a Gig'O RAM), I know some things about getting back HD space. I'm saving up for a 7200RPM big drive or a top-level MacBook Pro, whichever's cheaper by the time I get a few thousand pennies put together.
Omni Disk Sweeper is the best for finding file hogs you've forgotten about & bloated folders you've lost track of the increasing fatness of (my own Download folder, for example, which I've been meaning to comb through & find the DMG dupes of apps I've already installed & don't need the DMGs for anymore). And running ODS for the first time is a REAL eye opener. It'll make ya a better more concientious maid.
    More suggestions:
Run Onyx & dump all your caches, or a util that does that. Caches hold LOTS o stuff. And Tiger's got all kinds of caches. Especially big are the browser caches, of course.
Run a util like Monolingual & excise all the languages except the one you want from all your apps you've got, automagically. HUGE increases in HD space there.
Another space-getter is to run a util like XSlimmer which will dump all the Intel code out of all your apps, leaving only the PPC code. This procedure USUALLY keeps the apps running ok; however, occassionaly an app apparently needs the Intel stuff, or shares it with the PPC code; i.e., a few apps won't run properly (or at all) after doing this. But that's no big deal...... Most apps run just fine after getting Intel surgeried cut out of 'em. And using XSlimmer, you can deselect those apps you just don't want getting messed with at all. But, if you plan on going Intel, & migrating any of those slimmed apps over, well, they won't work there & you'll have to DL & reinstall those apps. Probably best way to go, anyway....
Eliminate duplicate files. For example, MP3's you might have in some folder that iTunes auto-copies when they're, say, double-clicked on & they wind up getting opened by iTunes which you've got set as the default app (change the default opener particularly or globally in the MP3 file's info box). If iTunes doesn't have that MP3 indexed into its database then it'll make a copy of it & it then puts that copy into its own folder. So then ya got 2 of the same thing. Leave it if ya want it that way though, of course.
To auto-dump dupes, Tidy Up!, for example, will do that for you.
    Happy House Cleaning!

  • Missing hard drive space after aborted attempt at sharing iMovie project with YouTube

So, recently I tried sharing an iMovie project with YouTube.  I clicked on the project in my project library, then selected share with YouTube from the drop down menu.  I chose to share it as a HD 720 project.  At this point, I had 27 GB of free hard drive space. After the project was converted (or whatever it's called, a process which took about half an hour, and which left me with about 6.5 GB of hard drive space), but before the project was actually exported or shared with or uploaded or published to YouTube (the second step), I saw that it was going to take three hours to upload, so I decided I wanted to share it as a non-HD video, in order to save time and space on my HD.  I cancelled the upload.  I then deleted the project in my imovie projects folder (since it now had the HD logo beside the name), intending to just start over and share the project in 960x540.  Thing is, after deleting every trace of it I could find in iMovie, in my Documents Folder, in my Movies folder, and in iTunes, I only reclaimed 4 GB of space on my hard drive (leaving me with 10 GB).  So what happened to the missing 17 GBs, and how can I get them back?  Also, the amount of space used in order to share that project just seems excessive to me, so I realize that something else might be going on here.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Comments?
    Thanks.

  • Microsoft Word 2008 wonays no hard drive space available, which

I have 196 GB of free hard drive space as well as 4 GB of RAM on my MacBook Pro. No other applications are running. No volumes are mounted to the desktop. I am running the most recent Mac OS (10.5.8) and have installed all Microsoft Office 2008 updates.
Yet when I go to save a 7 MB Word Document--which is already saved to my hard drive--after making a small change, I get this error message:
"The disk is full trying to write to 'MacIntosh HD'. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk.
Try one or more of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs. and windows.
*Save the document on another disk."

Just my 2 cents, after encountering exactly the same problem: I saved the same file in the .docx format, having previously directed Word 2008 to use the 97-2004 .doc format.
While this didn't remove the problem of Auto-save complaining about the bogus disk-full issue, it did seem to allow me to save the document continuously without complaint.

  • New User Account has No Hard Drive Space

I also have a different problem and started a thread here. It was that thread that lead me to start this new one.
One of the people helping me there suggested I make a new user account and see if that solved my problem. I made two new user accounts, one a 'standard' and the other an 'administrator.' In both cases the new user accounts have no hard drive space, and no download or document folder in the dock.
Logging out of either of those accounts and back as myself (administrator) I have 410 gb of free hard drive space.
Any thoughts on what could be happening or how to resolve? My hard drive recently disappeared so I took it in to a Mac Genius and under AppleCare the hard drive was replaced. I did a full restore from Time Machine and have repaired permissions countless times since then and also run DiskWarrior. Repair Permissions returns a message that Apple has posted can be ignored; no other issues. DiskWarrior found two errors related to directory structure and repaired/replaced them. Other than my original problem and this new one regarding the new user accounts having no hard drive space my system runs fine.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.5.

Sorry I wasn't clear in the first post. On my way into work today I started thinking it may be time to start over as well. You mentioned archive and install - would a clean install be better (I know it will be longer)?
Also, just for clarification - when I did a Full Restore from Time Machine was that the same as say restoring from a program like SuperDuper (that clones the hard drive)?
My thinking on this is if I do clean install, I should not restore from Time Machine if the structure carries over. That could be what is causing these problems. Instead I should back up my iPhoto and iTunes libraries via the built in back-up (to an external hard drive or DVDs), back up any documents, etc. and then really start over. Do a clean install, then reload 3rd party software from the original disks and restore the iPhoto and iTunes libraries, etc.

  • New iTunes update 10.6 consumed hard drive space

    Greetings,
I recently upgraded my iTunes to version 10.6. I then synced my 2 iPads (a 16 gig model and a 64 gig model). The 16 gig model took a long time to sync (about 2 hours), but I thought that might be due to it being about 85% full. The 64 gig model sync'd in about 40 minutes. After syncing I noticed that a lot of my free hard drive space had been consumed, I had less than a gig left. I seem to remember having around 20 to 30 gig before the upgrade.
My iTunes libraries are located on an external drive.
What happend to my hard drive space? Are the iPad backups taking up additional space. Where are the iPad backups stored? How can I purge them.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Tim Kern

    Hi Julian,
Thanks. You are correct I am a Mac (Snow Leopard) user. I'll follow the path and see if there are any bloated files.
    Tahnk you,
    Tim

  • I've run out of Hard Drive space (photos, music, email)

Hello, I have a 2009 230GB 13"  macbook pro and I'm down to 400MB left of free hard drive space!
I've got about 120 GBs allocated to photos (High res/movies taken with my DSLR)
    80GBs allocated to iTunes music/podcasts.
and and the rest allocated to MacMail files/random applications.
    My questions are these
    1) What is the best way to transfer these files to a back up drive while also keeping them accessible. I don't want to delete half my photo album after transfering it and then build upon it on my laptop again. That seems like a recipe for disorganization. Same with iTunes.
    2) how much memory shoudl I keep free at all times?
Thank you for your time. . .
    Allison

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
See how to clean up you hard disk here*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Next get an external Firewire hard disk case with SATA 2.5" support, and move the hard drive into that case.  http://www.macsales.com/ has several that have their own wall power supply, and get a larger 2.5" hard drive supprorted by your MacBook Pro (Determine if you might need 1.5 Gbps or higher support from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3561/ and then note that 17" support all hard drive heights, where 15" only do 9.5mm unless they are "Unibody", in which case they support the 12.5mm drives as well).
Use Carbon Copy Cloner, or Superduper to copy to the new hard drive from the old.
Finally replace the old external small drive with another supported 2.5" drive so you have a means to clone your MacBook Pro.

  • What should the minimum available hard drive space be?

i've got a 250gb hard drive on a macbook pro (march 2009) and only 23.93gb left. how low should i let my hard drive gb go for a smooth/reliable running computer?
    thanks for the reply!

I agree with Gregory that keeping 10% of a 1TB drive free isn't necessary, but I certainly wouldn't let a 250GB drive get more than 90% full, and I wouldn't let a 30GB drive get more than 75% full, tops — not that I'll ever have a 30GB drive again.
Among other reasons to keep free space on your hard drive, any time you want to burn a CD or DVD, you need to have room on your hard drive for a disk image the same size as the capacity of the disc you're going to burn. And contrary to what Gregory has concluded from his unscientific experiment, there are many, many applications and operations that will bog down, freeze, quit unexpectedly or kernel-panic the computer if there is insufficient free hard drive space. Yes, having lots of RAM helps, but it isn't a substitute for judicious maintenance of adequate free space on one's hard drive.

  • 6+ minutes takes all hard drive space

If i import 5 minutes of video all is well. If I import 6+ then all the free hard drive space is used and i get an out of memory error. Any suggestions

What version of FCE is this? Most likely your version of QuickTime doesn't work with it. Do a forum search and you'll probably find some solutions.

  • Question about Hard drive Space and Logic Pro

We just installed Logic Pro 7.2 (and Tiger) onto our Dual G4. We have nearly filled the bootup drive, with tonnes of space on our other hard drives (80GB and 100GB). With only ~4 GB left on the startup drive, will this cause problems with Logic Pro? We have more than the recommended RAM, but I was wondering if the hard drive space might be an issue, like with iDVD where you need ~8-10 GB free to burn a DVD.
I've been considering copying things over from my startup drive to my 80GB drive (which has tiger on it too)and making the 80 GB drive my new startup drive, but it's a bit of work and if I don't need to do it right away I don't want to bother. What is the recommended amount of free hard drive space and memory for Logic Pro to work well? I personally like to have ~10GB free for anything, but that might be tricky at this point. I want to know if I should go through with the hassle of moving things over or wait a bit and see how it goes. I've not ahd a chance to use the program yet, but I'd like to set it up and keep it working smoothly once I start to use it. Any advice or experience from anyone in this department?

Your best off having at least 25% free space of any hard drive.
With Logic, It is a good idea (though not necessary) to have your OS and apps on one HD, and your song files and samples (and other files) on another. I would also suggest that you get a hard drive with a speed of at least 7200rpms.
