700MB CD-R in 10.4 = 670MB in 10.3?

When I insert a 700MB recordable CD in my MacBook Pro (10.4.8) it tells me there's over 700MB of space on the disc. When I insert the same blank CD in my iBook G4 running 10.3.9, the space on the disc is suddenly under 670MB ("Available: 660.7MB" in fact).
I have a CD with 684MB on it that I want to duplicate. I can copy it to a 700MB disc in 10.4.8, but it won't fit on the same disc in 10.3.9. (Same result on two Macs running 10.3.9.) Why? Is there any way to get 700MB onto a 700MB disc in 10.3.9?

Hi HandyMac!
Try this procedure. But I'm not sure it works for RW discs.

Content:
Create a new folder in the Finder
Drag everything you want to burn, up to 700 MB, into the folder.
Open Terminal and type cd ~/Desktop
Press the Enter key. This changes Terminal's active directory to your user's Desktop folder.
Type hdiutil makehybrid -o myburn.iso (There's a space after the o in iso, and myburn can be any name you choose) DON'T press Enter
Switch to the "Finder"
Drag & drop the folder you created onto the Terminal window. Terminal should fill in the full path to the folder.
Press Enter. Enter key will then execute the command.
What you have done is used the hdiutil Unix command to create a hybrid disk image named myburn.iso (you can choose whatever name you like, in place of myburn, but use iso for the extension.
You should see the message "Creating hybrid image" in your Terminal window, as well as an indication of the task's progress.
When finished, you should see a disk image called myburn.iso on your Desktop.
You can use Disk Utility to burn this image, or you can type
hdiutil burn ~/Desktop/myburn.iso in Terminal
Insert a blank CD-R when prompted, and then just wait until it's done.
Good Luck!

I do not know if your file can be recovered.  But I may be able help you to recreate it with ease.  If you will settle for a composite where all image are re-sized for a particular tile size and virtually cropped to its aspect ratio.  However all source image need be gathered into a folder to use my script process. • Can't fit 73mb of songs on a 700mb disk?

I was asked to copy a disk for a friend, just 73.6MB of songs on a 700MB CD-R. The songs imported easily, but when I tried to burn the playlist, I was told they wouuldn't fit!??

ITunes stores music files in one format, but if you want to burn an audio cd that is playable on a regular cd player, it must convert each song into another format. So when you're browsing through iTunes, the sizes you see (like 73.6mb) represent the size occupied by the files as they reside on your computer. But when you ask the computer to create an audio cd, those files will occupy much more space than 73.6mb.
This is all completely normal. A typical audio cd contains audio data that will often fill up an entire 700mb cd with audio data. When you import those songs into your computer, they will typically be reduced to about 1/10th their original size.
When burning audio cds from iTunes playlists, a much more useful indicator would be to look at the total duration of all the songs. If you're asking it to create more than 80 minutes of music as an audio cd, it will not work. Some audio cds only support 74 minutes of music.
Try removing tracks in your playlist until you get under 80 minutes, and burn that.

I am wondering why when ever i insert a cd that has 700Mb of open space and want to burn 75Mb of something on it it tells me i need another disc....it is a waste.
    Thanks for your help,

In Toast, just select "DVD-video" (instead of "DVD-video from Video_TS").
Then drag the reference movie (YourProjectName.mov) from the iMovie project folder into the Toast window.

  • Importing CDs larger than 700MB in total size

When i try to import a CD with a total file size over 700MB the last few songs will not import and the details of the song are in the library but the song cannot be played and the track length is "not available".  Any ideas this is very annoying.
I have tried selecting only the offending songs and importing them but this doesn't work either.
THe first songs on the disc import as normal

  • Sharing large folio 700mb too large? (error downloading)

Hi, I've created a 700mb folio just to share with a client. However when they try and download it using content viewer they get an "error during download - Could not download file" message.
Can anyone explian why this happens, is it simply a file size limit issue?
Theyre using a galaxy tablet incase this matters.
    Thanks

It's large but that shouldn't cause the error. Could be a hiccup in the
    servers.
I've seen that error on a 5meg folio.

  • Exported an "Apple TV" version and my 700mb file doubled in size?

Based on a recommendation on these boards I bought QT Pro. This was because I had a 700MB AVI file that I needed to add chapters to. I was able to open the file and go through the process to add the "text" chapters. Worked fine. But when I exported to an ATV version of the file using the default settings, it went from being a 700mb file to being a 1.6gb file. Wow!
I'm a novice to this but I'm blown away by the jump in size. I'm wondering if I need to take a different approach to make it retain the chapters but be smaller in size.
Is this size normal? What are my options?
    thanks much

Size = bitrate/sec X # seconds. The original files size has ZERO to do with it especially when you are transcoding. The original LENGTH does.
IIRC AppleTV spec is 5mb/sec equal to a decent quality DVD.
Use a lower bitrate. A higher bitrate than the source (which is clearly the case) won't improve the quality anyway - you cannot add bits that were not there. And H.264 is an impressive quality codec that can look great a lower bitrates.
Try exporting to iPod , only 700 kb/sec or iPhone/Touch specs at 1400 kb/sec vs. Apple TV, see if you like the quality.
Tip, select *one minute* of your source with some movement and test that by exporting the minute with various settings (iPod, iPhone, etc.) . It takes less time and you can see the results sooner. Then to figure out the total size just multiply that one minute file size X # minutes the original is in total. Note I never use the presents and use the manual settings instead, and frankly I rarely use QT Pro for this preferring the free MPEG Streamclip instead which is alo worth a try.
One other note: some codecs (WMV is the best example) are compressed and when you export them even without reencoding, e.g. using Save As to make a MOV file they double in size since in the WMV container they are compressed and only expand on playback. In the MOV container the uncompressed video is in the container for keeps.
A final note, video is expressed in kb or mb/sec which is kilobits or megabits/sec. 8 kilobits = 1 kilobyte, 8 megabits = 1 megabyte, which is important to know as file sizes are always expressed in KB/MB vs. kb/mb.

  • HD free space going from 700MB to 7GB w/ reboot?

I have a MacBook Air with a 128GB SSD. I have it partitioned with Bootcamp, and the size of the OS X partition is ~40GB.* It was giving me a message that I only had ~700MB of space left and I needed to clean up my hard drive to continue downloading files. I checked Activity Monitor, and indeed this was the amount it showed as being free.
After I rebooted for unrelated reasons, the partition suddenly showed as having ~10GB free. After a couple of minutes it showed 7.75GB free, where it seems to have stabilized. I did not do anything else to adjust the amount of free space on the HD.
Does this make any sense? What could have happened?
    * I need to repartition, but that is a separate conversation.

Thanks Niel. That could explain it. I'm all too aware that my system is always running out of physical RAM - I only have 2GB, and the current state of 12MB Free with another 500 Inactive is not uncommon (for example as pasted below):
When I look at the /private/var/vm/ path I see six swapfiles and a sleep image, taking up a total of 4.3GB. What I don't understand is why 4 of the 5 swap files haven't been modified since yesterday, nor has the sleepimage file. Does this imply that some or all of these are not functioning correctly? • 72MB playlist when burned creates 700MB CD?

All the times I've burned playlists to an audio CD, the MB are identical (e.g., 80MB playlist = 80MB audio CD). The last playlist I burned, however, to an audio CD came out to over 700MB.
    Two questions:
    1. What changed? I recently did burn some .mp3 CDs, and I definitely changed the toggle back to burn as an audio CD, and it said it was burning a CD. I also changed the import setting back to import as AAC encoder. Is there something else I also need to toggle?
    2. Is this huge CD playable in a CD player? It is a gift, but I don't have a CD player to check. It has both .mp3 and AAC files on it.
    Thanks much -- I'm clueless.

  • 643MB too much for 700MB disk

I get a message "Whatwhat.fpbf" is too large to fit on the disk. Remove some files and try again." I doubt this is actually related to the size of the blank CD since it is 700MB and the data I want to burn to it came from a CD as well. The data folder is 643MB. Anyone know if this is some type of secret language that needs a Swami to interpret?

    Hi MoofAngel
If I put in a blank 700 CD which by calculation from decimal to binary actually = 667 MB, and Get Info about it, it says
    capacity 670 MB
    Available 660.7
    Used 9.2
What is used on a blank disk I wonder? Is it a reserved space for the file structure perhaps? Anyway it should still take 660MB
Try creating a disk image in Disk Utility of say 645 or 650 MB, load your Folder into it and then try burning that .dmg onto a disk.

  • IMovie says I have 700mb/3min left for videos but my HD has 250gig free???

I'm trying to import more videos into iMovie but it says there's only about 3 minutes/700mb of storage space available.
This makes no sense because my HD has 250gig of free space... WOuld somebody please tell me what I'm missing here?
    Thanks.

    Hi
If You only got one hard disk in Your Mac and NO external ones.
And this is not "Partitioned" into simulation to be more than one (no good idea here)
Then most probably iMovie Pref file has got an error = corrupted (very common problem)
Either find com.apple.iMovie.plist file and trash this - iMovie will make a new one
when started next time (iMovie can not run - when trashing this file)
    or
Start a new User account and log into this and re-try (this makes a full new set
of various pref files - all without any errors)
AND Start a new iMovie project (and re-import to a new event) - Just to prevent
any errors in the video material.
(use of strange video material - also can provoce this kind of errors eg .avi, .wmv, .H264 (?) ,
    .mpg4, .mp3(audio) etc.)

  • DIAdem taking a long time to load 700MB TDMS file to data portal

I'm trying to load a 700MB TDMS file into DIAdem ,4 channels 10Hz sampling rate over 4 days . When i drag the file into the data portal , diadem freezes up , its on a 2GB machine, file located on the desktop, not running any other programs and it went 50min without being able to load before i made it quit. seems to work fine on smaller files though . Was wondering if this sounds normal and if anyone knows a way around it.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for all your input.
YongqinYe and Brad : I've tried defragmenting but this also seems to be taking a  long time (in excess of ) on 2 different machines. The index file is 300MB, so about 75% of the *.tdms,
Otmar:  i also tried registry loading the data but this still took a long time  on this particular file although it worked great on smaller files (5MB).
Brad : the file does not open in the labVIEW TDMS viewer  although i'm able to view it in chunks of 65000 using the TDMS importer for excel.
Stefan: the file does have explicit time stamp channel .
Any extra help would be appreciated but the way I'm thinking of doing it now is to use much longer buffer size (from only 6 to a few hundred) when collecting the data to decrease the level of fragmentation.

  • CD-R Capacity - EXACTLY 700MB or ?

Occasionally the files I'd like to burn to a single data CD add up to slightly greater than 700MB - say 710, or even 701 MB. I was wondering what the true capacity of the CD-R is - is it really 700.00 MB or is "700" (such a nice even number) rounded off from the actual value? Can I go over a little bit, and if so how much, and end up with a reliable disc? FWIW I also have Toast in addition to iTunes.
    Thanks.

No, it is not possible to burn more than 700MB to a disc using iTunes, or Toast for that matter. Some burning software, such as Dragon Burn, claim to be able to "over burn" more capacity than the disc is supposed to hold but honestly I would not trust that. A CD-R holds a maximum of 700 MB and trying tricks and hacks to get more on the disc is just asking to lose data.
