  • Hard Drive detects imminent failure

Please can anyone help. i have a compaq 6735s lap top which is about  months ols. Today when i switch on I have a black screen with the following message: 1720-SMART hard drive detects imminent failure.
    What should i do now

    Hi,
    How many months?
The error message might or might not be true. It is worth your time to go ahead and back up all of your data to an external hard disk
Boot into Windows and go to Device manager look at the disk drive device click on the + to expand the category and post the model number (the complete alphanumeric string next to the icon)  here in your thread. There is a possibility that your hard drive requires a firmware update. I will do a bit of research to see if that is indeed the issue.
There are some Maxtor drives that have had to have the update done to correct the SMART reporting feature which caused an error message virtually identical to the one you are getting.
    regards,
    erico.

  • Envy 15-j119tx smart hard drive detects imminent failure two separate notebooks

Last week I bought an Envy 15-j119tx from a retailer, and every time I restarted it I would get an error message telling me that the smart hard drive detects an imminent failure. From my google search I found that I pretty much need to replace the hard drive. So I took the laptop back to the retailer and they apologised and gave me another one today. This one also has the same error, so I am really confused, is this a problem with this model or what?

Maybe that retailer had 800 pound gorillas stocking the shelves with laptops. I would bet if you installed a new drive it would be fine. It is also not impossible HP got a batch of bad drives and laptops shipped to the same retailer probably came off the assembly line together. I would take it back one more time and insist to start it up before you take the new one out of the store this time.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering  "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount"  and "diskutil info disk2."  Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help?  Thank you. blelambert

  • Boot message: problem with hard drive detected. Slow loading of windows 7

    Good Day
I am having a problem with my hard drive, everytime it boots these days it starts with a message: Warning: a problem with the hard drive has been detected, followed by an extremely slow loading of windows. then once in windows it gives me Anothet message
the messsage says hard drive failure imminent you should back up you data etc.
    My specs are:
    Intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz
    4 gig ddr3 transcend
    1 tb seagate 7200.12
giga byte nvidia 9800 gt 1 gig ddr3
    Please help lots of data.

    Another option:
Take your hard drive out and slave it into another KNOWN WORKING PC.
Back-up your data immediately. Slow boot usually indicates that the drive is going to die. (Check your warranty!)
Then, run "chkdsk /r" from the host PC to check the failing drive. (It is good to match OSes if you can.)

  • Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk

    Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.
    http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-a6300-Desktop-PC-series/3644673/model/3671505/driver...
The next page just keeps looping or not proceeding when I put in details.
I can’t find anywhere to get hold of my copy of windows vista for this PC or get a disk to re-install on a new drive or fix the old detected drive, can someone please help!!

Just what size HD and is the drive Sata II or Sata III?
Vista 32bit .iso    You must have a valid installation key, which should be on the COA sticker on the computer, to activate the installation once it completes.  ImageBurn to create the .iso disk.   Driver page Vista (not 64 bit)

  • Hard drive detection problem - PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'm about at my wits end with this problem.  One of my drives crashed over the weekend, and since then the replacement drive never gets detected.  When I have the second drive installed, my computer never gets past the "Verifying DMI Pool Data", then says disk boot failure.  When I take out the second drive, my computer boots fine.  I've tried different jumper settings, thinking maybe i looked at the diagram backwards, disconnecting my DVD drive and putting the hard disk on the secondary IDE, and installing the new drive as the master and installing Windows on it, with the old drive as the slave.  Nothing has worked.  As soon as I connect a second hard drive, I get a disk boot failure.  I've checked the boot priority a hundred times, and it's correct.  In case it was a power supply problem, I removed everything except the two hard drives and some RAM, and that didn't fix anything.  I'm lost as to where to go from here.  My computer works fine without the second drive, but I need the second drive for gaming.
I'm now thinking it may be the motherboard, because a couple things have happened over the last month.  First, all of a sudden I got a CMOS checksum error, then about a week and a half ago the onboard NIC died.  And when I installed the updated drivers and flashed the BIOS, on restart I received an error message saying something was wrong with the overclocking settings and had been reset to the default values.  The problem with that is I never overclock anything.
I'm not even sure the old drive actually crashed anymore.  I heard clicking coming from the computer, and when I all of a sudden lost access to the drive, I assumed it crashed.  But now that I am unable to get the brand new drive to work, I'm thinking I need to get a new motherboard.  I'm trying to avoid that as long as I can though because this one is only 5 months old.
Would a possible solution be to just leave the master on IDE, and buy a SATA drive to use as a second disk?  Or does mixing IDE and SATA cause issues?
Thanks for any help anybody may be able to offer.
Anyway, here are my system specs:
    K8N Neo4 motherboard
    Athlon64 3200+
    2.5 GB RAM - 3x 512 and 1x 1GB stick
Boot disk - Western Digital 120GB ATA 100 IDE
Old Slave - Seagate 60GB ATA 100 IDE
New Slave - Western Digital 120GB ATA 100 IDE
    NIC - Linksys 10/100
    DVD-RW - Mad Dog Multimedia

Does the 2nd HD work then, were you able to boot up and install Windows?
    Does BIOS detect it?
Have you tried a new IDE cable?
Make sure that all the pins are properly in and not loose in the molex connector to the HD.
Have you tried using the new drive alone on IDE-1 or 2?
Have you tried clearing CMOS? remove P/S AC cord, press case power button a few times to drain remaining power then clearing CMOS buy way of the jumper.

If so you could RMA it.

My FreeAgent GoFlex Drive is detected by my MacBook Pro, but I can't move any files to my computer or from my computer onto it.  That is the purpose of this thing and I have done it before.  Any suggestions?

  • P965 hard drive detection problem

    Hi,
I have the latest bios for the P965 platinum, using 4 drives in AHCP mode.
For some reason the board insists on re-detecting all drives on most reboots or startups and it's quite a slow process.
Just occasionally it knows what's there and sails through quickly. Anyone else had this problem?
I've been into the bios to check things, and the drives are happily listed there, so why the redetect most times?
    Frustrating...
    thanks for any help....Lozzy

i have this same (small) issue sometimes, it's not a big deal since it only happens on RE-boot, not normal start-up from shut off state.
True, it is a small issue, but it's irritating since I'm reinstalling windows at the moment which involves a lot of reboots, hence the query.

  • K9A2 Plat v1 eSATA -- No drives detected at POST? -- (Resolved)

Upgrading the BIOS to 1.4 was not a fix for me, so I set aside the two NEW cables I had been using, and just added an eSATA conversion segment to some standard SATA cables I had been using.   I'm now booting the off of a 0+1 RAID on the Promise T3, which includes the two external ports.  I transferred the drives directly over from the internal to external connectors without any apparent ill effect.  No modification / reinstall of the RAID / OS required.  With this result, I'm officially writing this all off to bad cables.
Perhaps as a result of the BIOS upgrade, Win2k reported that it had detected new hardware.  I'm not sure why, but sometimes on startup, the system hangs while scanning for drives on the PDC42819 --- with a message to the effect that "your system has a hardware problem!".  Reboot and it goes away, so whatever!
This now allows me to run more burners.  I'm running three SATA and one IDE.  Everything is happy in device manager, save for one unknown device.
    ****** Original post:
Win2k SP4 is running pretty well on my SB600 0+1 RAID, but when I tried to use the Promise T3 eSATA ports recently I encountered a problem at the point where POST passed control to the PDC42819 for array enumeration and scanning for attached drives.  Specifically, normal SATA drives attached to the eSATA ports are never detected, even though the exact same drives attached to SATA5 & SATA6 internally are detected without any problem.
I have some difficulty understanding the difference between the SATA5-6 and eSATA ports  as listed in the mainboard specifications.  Some of the following obviously applies to both the v1 and v2, and when it starts talking about SATA5-6 and eSATA, I assume this is referencing what I have:
    "4 SATAII ports by SB600 (SATA1~4)
2 SATAII ports by Promise T3, support SAS ready device
     (SATA5~6, optional)
2 eSATA ports by Promise T3 (optional)

     2 SATA (SATA5 & SATA6) ports and 2 eSATA ports by Promise T3

So I have some basic questions about the Promise T3 and associated ports:
If my board actually has the eSATA ports (not just solder blanks like those at JTPM), is a regular SATA drive supposed to be detected if plugged in?
Assuming that the Promise T3 is enabled in the BIOS, is there any other prerequisite for making the eSATA ports work?  Like, can you use the eSATA ports without using SATA5-6 internally on the mainboard?
Swapping eSATA cables made no difference.

    Yes, you can.
I have had some different results depending on the eSATA enclosure I use. Tested with two regular SATA drives, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 and Hitachi 7K250. Both drives work fine on the internal connectors, both drives work fine in an ICY BOX enclosure connected to eSATA. Trouble started when I bought a second enclosure, Cooler Master X-Craft. The Hitachi drive simply wasn't there anymore, the Seagate was but it would hang during boot where it is scanning for hard drives...

  • SATA hard drive problems with k8n neo4 plat

Helo , I am hoping someone can help me with this. I have read Fafner's thread on installing a sata hard drive on the neo4 mb but the only utility program I found on wd site is called " lifeguard11 for windows". Is this the right utility to use to partion my hard drive? I burned it to a cd and and my computer will post but will not boot from that cd. I have followed the instructions that came with the mb and used the floppys at F6 but it won't countinue to install windows after that.
Also I'm not sure how to enable sata in the bios. Do I go to integrated peripherals/sata devices config. and at the top of the screen it say's RAID Enable. Do I enable that and then enable sata1 raid? I am only using one hard drive. Thanks for help you can give.

My system is similar to yours, if your just using the one Raptor you don't need any special drivers, your mother board will detect the Raptor with out any special settings. I hooked my Raptor up to SATA 1 (look on pg 2-2 of your book for the location) If your only planing on installing one operating system on your hard drive, such as windows XP pro, Windows will format and partition the drive for you.
If your having problems booting from a CD make sure you change the boot order in the BIOS (under advanced bios features pg. 3-8 of your manual) so that CD is before HD. For example, mine is set up for: First boot device = Floppy drive, Second boot device = CD Rom, Third boot device = hard drive, and etcetera. if your using more than one hard drive such as an IDE drive make sure you set the "hard disk boot priority" on the same page to the hard drive you want to boot from.
Once that is done put your Windows CD in the CD drive and reboot, Windows will guide you through the rest.

  • I think my hard drive might be fried!/White screen of death sequel

Yeah...So to add to the lovely white screen of death that I had before, I CAN now put the OS X disks in the cd drive. BUT here's the catch. To get into the disk first aid, it goes through it as it should, BUT there's no hard drive image!

That would be freakin' sweet if it could do that. I wouldn't want to have something run on a USB port 24/7 but I'd rather not have to be without a computer either. I'm running on my parent's iTV right now.

  • Can't boot on hard drive or CD/DVD - grey/gray screen of death

A few weeks ago my PowerPC G5 Dual Processor running Leopard OS X froze while the screen saver was running. I hard-powered-off the computer --> held down power button for ~10 seconds. When I tried to start up again, I got the "gray/grey screen of death" with the Apple logo. The screen hung there and then fans starting ramping up to full speed with no sign off boot up. I know others have posted similar issues, but I wanted to start a new thread.
    Basic Specs:
PowerPC G5 Dual 2.5 Hz Processors
4 Gb memory (recently upgraded form 2 to 4) ***
Bought in early 2005 (I think)
    Here's a summary of what I've tried:
    DOES NOT WORK
    - booting up holding down C (for drive) --> straight to kill screen
    - booting up from original discs for G5 (from both C mode and Option mode)
    - booting up from 10.5 Leopard disc (from both C mode and Option mode)
    - booting up holding down Option-Comman-P-R --> straight to kill screen
    DOES WORK
    - connecting to secondary computer using target mode (holding down T) - I can see both of my hard drives
    - booting up holding down Option - I can select either my main drive (secondary is not present there but there is no OS on it) or CD/DVD in slot
    - booting from Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk from Option menu
-- I ran disk checks, had errors. I ran Disk Warrior from secondary computer in target mode and repaired the drive, running the AHT test again shows no errors
    - ran disk repair from secondary computer to fix errors (using disk utility and disc warrior)
    OTHER THINGS I'VE DONE
    - replaced backup battery on motherboard that was weak at only ~70 mV with fresher battery at ~3.6V
    - held down PMU (not SMU) reset button for 30 seconds
    - (main fans were cleaned a few weeks before issue)
    - two weeks before issue I installed more memory (from 2 Gb to 4 Gb with two new 1 Gb cards)
    - backed up data - so I can delete drives if needed
    THOUGHTS
    - I'm concerned that under CPU it shows 158950.77 GHz - shouldn't it be showing two CPU?
    - the drives look healthy when looking at them in target mode
    - issue is occurring between power up and drive selection (since CD/DVD is also not viewable)
    - maybe the new memory caused local over heating to the motherboard?
    - I may be able to replace the heat sink, but the spare computer I have access to has different looking hardware. It's probably a different model of the G5. My computer has one metal case cover and the extra one has a split case cover.
    NEXT STEP
    - I need to back up secondary drive fully first
    - pull out new memory sticks
    - pull out all memory except originals
    - pull out secondary drive
    LAST RESORT
    - buy external case for drives and cry about how no one will buy my dead desktop
Because this is a long description, I will post updates in the comments and a final comment here:
