70D focus shift in P Mode

I often shift the focal point using P shooting mode. Yet despite lots of research in the official manual and another manual, it's just not working. At most, it'll shift the aperature; not the focal point.
I've done this on every other Canon EOS I've owned, but can't seem to make the 70D do this. Any suggestions?

Program mode provides a unique feature called "program shift" -- not be confused with moving or shifting the selected focus point (that's completely different.)
When you shoot in full auto (green box) mode, the camera attempts to be more-or-less "idiot proof" in that it not only starts by automatically evaluating the shot and picking all camera settings... it also locks you out of making changes to those settings.  In full auto mode you cannot change focus points, nor exposure settings, etc.  It's all locked in and automatic.
When you use "program" mode, the camera starts out by automatically evaluating the shot and selecting exposure settings... except you can override these using "program shift".
For any given exposure, to correctly expose an image on the sensor the camera will need some amount of light.  You can deliver light slowly over an extended period of time, or quickly in a very short time.  You control this by changing the size of the aperture opening in the lens and the duration that the shutter will remain open.   Many combinations of aperture and shutter speed will result in a delivery of the same amount of light.
But it turns out that the effect you get in the resulting image will not be the same even though the camera collected the same amount of light.  Fast shutter speeds are great for freezing action.  Slow shutter speeds are great for providing deliberate blur which can be used to "imply motion" in a shot.  Small aperture sizes are great for creating a broad depth of field (the range of distances at which subjects appear to be in acceptable focus) whereas a large aperture is great for creating a tack-sharp subject with a deliberately blurred out background (and/or foreground if desired.)
But since "program" mode is more-or-less starting out like "automatic" you don't initially get to tell teh camera what you want with respect to aperture or shutter speed.  This is where "program shift" comes in to play...  you can half-press the shutter button to cause the camera to meter the scene... THEN you can roll the front dial (you do not need to keep your finger on the shutter) and the camera will shift the exposure... as you roll the wheel to the left it will use smaller apertures but increase the shutter exposure time.  Roll it to the right and it will use larger apertures and faster shutter times.
This is not the same as "exposure compensation" in which you use the rear dial (not the front dial) to tell the camera to increase or decrease the exposure relative to what the meter reading indicates (asking the camera to deliberately over-expose or under-expose the shot.)
Meanwhile back to your question about focus points... as you look at the back of your camera, the button in the upper-right corner shows an icon (in white... not blue) of a rectangle with some focus point in it (the icon displays 5 points arranged in what is more or less a "+" shape even though your camera really has 19 AF points and they are not arranged like the icon shows... Canon uses that same icon on every EOS digital camera.)  This is the "AF Point Selection" button.   When you press that button you may move the selected AF point.
This feature is available in all of the "creative" modes (Program, Av, Tv, and M).  It is not available in the other modes.
See page 105 of your manual to understand how this works.
The 70D also allows you to change the AF area selection mode (different than just selecting a single AF point) and you may wish to review all of the AF options available on your camera... I believe this whole section starts on page 99.
Incidentally... if the camera is allowed to use all of it's AF points to select focus (or if you are in one of the basic modes that don't allow you to control the AF point selection or mode) then the camera is programed to lock focus on the AF point which is able to achieve focus at the NEAREST focusing distance to the camera.  E.g.  Suppose you want to photograph a person, but there is a plant in your shot which is a bit closer to the camera than the person you intend to photoraph.  If both subjects (person and plant) are covered by AF points, then the camera will ALWAYS choose the point which can lock focus at the nearer distance... and if that's the plant, then you'll get a nice sharp plant and an out-of-focus person.

  • Random Focus Shift

    Hello,
Recently, I'm not sure if it was after the 10.5.4 update or not, but regardless, still recently, I've a bunch of focus shifting issues. What I mean by that is that sometimes the focus of a window randomly changes, say I have two windows open in Safari, suddenly the focus just changes from one to the other, or sometimes the application just shifts all together (Safari to Finder). Also, when filling in a form, the focus may change for no apparent reason, and the same seems to apply to keyboard controls in embedded flash. Has anybody else experienced this issue?

I am having exactly same problem.
At first, I thought it was finder's problem. But after suffering from the problem for like 5 months, it appears to be another process that's stealing the focus.
I still don't have any clue as to which process is doing such a horrible thing.
It's getting worse. At the time I first upgraded to the Leopard, it was not so often that I didn't even notice it except for when I was trying to rename a file with the Finder. But now, it's happening very often and it happens even when I'm fiddling with firefox!!
As I went through this annoyance, I found out that it usually happens with a spike in the CPU usage and IO usage. So I guess the culprit might be some service that's running in the background, indexing filesystem or doing some sort of house chores.
I really wish that the developer guys at Apple would at least give a dime at this age old problem.
There are people suffering from the same problem :

  • Focus shifts to the top of the screen on slecting value from messagechoice

    Hi All,
While selecting a value from message choice field, focus shifts to top of the screen and user needs to scroll down.
Due to fireAction event on messageChoice field, I think, page has to completely render and focus shifts to top of the screen.
As a solution, I am thinking about to regain focus on the same filed, after fireAction event gets triggered.
For this, what changes should I do?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,

Why do you have a fireAction event set? Can you change it to firePartialAction?

  • Type shift between design mode and preview mode in Muse.

My type shifts / moves positions between design and preview modes. It then justifies differently in differnet Web Browsers. This mean I end up positioning things incorrectly in design mode to accommodate the error when published. I am using the Droid Sans Websafe font from Typekit but it doesn't seem to matter which font is used as the bug still occurs. See the attached images; the left is in Design and the other in Preview. See how the formatting shifts within the software. Also the weight of the headline FORDNESS changes slighlty. On other pages, this headline shifts a few pixels across and down. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Text layout and rendering varies from browser-to-browser (and between Muse Design and Preview modes). This may come as a suprise if you have a Print background, but is the reality of the web medium. I'll point you to some previous forum posts that may be instructive.

  • 70d focus issue - admins answers please.

Will you admit that lot of 70d suffering focus issues?
Will you fix it by firmware update? Recall?
It's a big shame that everybody on the net speak about it and waste 1000 dollars and you just ignore us!!
I would like to get some answers please.
    Thank you.

I have the same issue. It's odd, I've had the 70d since November-ish. I used to be a '2nd shooter' at weddings w/ just my olf Nikon d5100 & a 50mm 1.8 for portraits, and the kit lens for wides. Total N00b. .I started getting a grasp of things, and my wedding partner decided to double-book a bunch fo weddings. Since he was a Canon user, and I was looking for an upgrade to the 5100, I switched to canon & bought a 70D. Since then he's complained about focus issues, blaming me, and since i'm newer to this gig, took it to heart and assumed it was me. I have a steady hand, and believe to not be any kind of user error - I know how to shoot.
Today I discovered the 50+ pages of forum complaints on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1354075 & the Canon forums http://forums.usa.canon.com/t5/EOS/When-will-canon-fix-the-focus-issues-with-the-70D/td-p/79330/page... - to find out that it might have been the camera all along? I just told the guy to screw off this weekend and quit because obviously I wasn't the photographer he needed... This focus problem hasn't been confirmed for me this week, but shooting w/ Tamron 17-50 2.8 & canon f4L 24-105, sure seems like theyr'e in the range of speculation here...
Will there be an update/recall to fix this?
Today I stumbled across a video (from the canon forums link) showing two photographers describing their issue w/ live view vs viewfinder view, and focusins on the center focal point for lenses 1.4-4.0... this sounds a LOT like my issue and am praying I can find an answer to this without having to call canon and RMA it.

  • Add shutter speed settings and manual focus in the manual mode, please sony :'(

I am so deeply craving for shutter speed settings in the manual mode so I can take very great night shots.
Manual and infinity focus would be nice as well

First of all: I competely agree. Low light shots where anything you are photographing is moving = very bad blur.
Second of all: whilst I don't think it's right that you should have to pay money on top of a flagship device to get the camera working as you expect, there are a couple of this party apps will help until Sony fix this. Camera FV5 has a lot more settings including AE-L (in focus modes) which stops some of the post processing that can mess up low light shots. But be prepared the high volume of settings to play with also makes it less accessible as an all purpose point and shoot app. Camera Zoom FX is somewhere between this app and the stock appin terms of usability and functionality if you want to try that too.

  • Focus shifted to next component after selecting item in combobox.....

I have Table and a textfield as only two UI components.
For the table i am using my custom editor(NewComboEditor.java), for this i am extending the "DefaultCellEditor" and applying this editor for my jTables first column. My custom editor simply prepares the editor by instantiating the jCombobox and sets the selected value and return it (in overwridden "getTableCellEditorComponent" method).
I have made my combobox editable by setting "combobox.setEditable(true)" in constructor of editor while creating the instance of combobox.
Now everything works fine except whenever i tried to select an item from the combobox , after the item selection, focus is assigned to textfield which is the nextfocusable component to jTable on which the comboboxes are rendered.
If my jcomboboxes are not editable then selection remains on combobox only.

  • Any fix for photos being out of focus when in edit mode?

found several discussions about this but no fix. My photos can be sharp as a tack but as soon as I click on "edit" they go out of focus. Sometimes they are out of focus before I ever click on edit but if I zoom slightly they are in perfect focus. I can view them in "preview" on my macbook and they look great. This is obviously frustrating as I can trying to edit them but can't see exactly what I am working with b/c they are showing up blurry. My macbook is a late 2008 and i have the latest version of everything else.
Not sure how long this has been going on but I just noticed it today. I thought my new camera (nikon d7000) was the problem, but as soon as I zoomed a bit I saw they were actually in focus to begin with. Thanks!

  • Speedlight 580EXii not using infrared focus assist in manual mode on canon 5dmrk3

Hi, I can't for he life of me figure out how to activate the infrared focus assist (for focusing in low light or no light environments) for the Canon Speediest 580EXii while mounted on the Canon 5D mrk3 while in M (manual) while using the camera photography. I'm usually going night events that demand focus practically in the dark, but I just don't use Automatic settings If anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'd be thankful to hear them. Mr. Donohue

See Page 98 of the CAMERA Owner's Manaul for enabling the AF Assist Beam, but note the precaution at mid-page that the AF Assist Beam must be enabled on the FLASH UNIT as well as on the camera.  On the 580 EXII, this is done with Custom Function Number 08 (CFn-08).  See Pages 27 and 28 of the FLASH UNIT Owner's Manual for instructions on this.
    Good luck !

    1) The only thing that changes the focus is my mouse and arrow keys.
    2) What's a "Finder-based selection window?"
    3) Mine selects the next item in the list, which I expect. If I'm going down a list of  items deciding which to delete, I'd like it to move to the next item.
If you want the choice of some other behavior, send feedback to Apple. I doubt they will provide any choices as that is not in their nature.

The original behavior.  Q: what should I tell them? A: If you add new behaviors add a preference for it.

Sorry. Still have no idea what you are talking about. I have no idea what the new behavior is. As far as I can tell, the Finder works as it always has.
Now, if you jumped from Leopard or Snow Leopard to Yosemite, I can't remember that far back as to any behavior such as you describe.
I don't know what you should tell them to do as I have no idea what is the behavior you expect.

  • Video playback slowdown (on window focus shift)

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini 1.42GHz 512mb RAM 80GB machine that I've been using for light OS X 10.4.7 usage. I've noticed that when a Safari window playing a video (Quicktime plugin or Adobe Flash 9.0) loses focus, that means when I change to another window, the video playback becomes very choppy to the point of being unable to watch it. I've noticed this tendency in DVD Player as well. I was wondering if someone could tell how I could turn off this. It's a real bugger because I multitask quite a bit and would like to hear videos play smoothly (the audio chops too) while it is out of focus.
I'm a Windows user by default so I really don't know if this is proscribed behavior for OS X to facilitate higher process responsiveness while in focus. I've done a couple of searches regarding the issue and haven't found anything. Hope I'm not treading well worn paths
    Bonus question:
I've noticed DVD Player playback quality is atrocious with any dvds I've played on it, I haven't seen any major complaints regarding the Mini's playback quality so I was wondering if someone had any pointers? The quality level is about that of any regular mpeg2 video without any postprocessing attached, it looks very crude. I've had this 'issue' since Panther. Is this a problem related to ATI's 32mb graphics core or...?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mac Mini 1.42GHz PPC (512mb, 80GB, 10.4.7)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The video slowdown in the Flash player is a built in "feature" (I actually think it is a feature, but your milage may vary!) of Safari.
I actually recently read something about this, but I'm not sure I'll get it all exactly correct. And of course I can't remember where I saw it. But the long-short of it seems to be that Flash doesn't have its own clock. It relies on the hosting platform to feed it its time cues. Different browser manage this differently, but Safari is evidently designed to drop Flash (and probably other things) to about 4 frames per second when the window doesn't have focus.
There seemed to be a similar limitation within Firefox as well. The discussion I read was asking some Flash plug-in developer if they could bypass these controls. The developer pointed out that (especially in the Firefox case) that was a community decision as a way to limit folks from having the dreaded "Death of Five thousand little Flash banners."
So even with a more powerful computer I don't think you will be able to get around this issue. Maybe I'm wrong.
As for the DVDs issue all I can say is that with a Mini you probably won't be able to watch DVDs and do other stuff.

  • EOS Utility for Mac - no "Live Mode" in Focus menu (70D)

I recently began using the EOS Utility (v. 2.1.4) application for remote shooting, and I'm having a difficult time following the instructions for manually focusing the lens. With the lens switched to AF, and after the EOS Utility has opened to show the Remote Live View window, I drag the selection rectangle to the portion of the image where I wish to focus, then click on the magnifying glass to zoom in. According to the instructions, the Focus popup menu should include several focusing options, one of which is supposed to be "Live Mode" which then allows you to use the arrow buttons to step focus the lens.
Unfortunately, "Live Mode" does not show up in this popup menu. I see "Quick Mode" and a variety of AF related choices, but "Live Mode" is no where to be found.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
    Thanks!

I have no actual knowledge of that procedure, so consider the source. But I'd think that for it to work as you intend, the lens would have to be of the type that allows itself to be manually focused while in AF mode. You don't say what lens you're using, but not all lenses fall into that category.
