72 dpi, awful quality...What do I do?

So, I have a large, pretty EPS file. I change my resolution to 72 dpi, and crop to the size I need for web. I place it in as 72 dpi, and it looks awful. What am I doing wrong?
Another question: I am running Photoshop CS3. Why now, with CS3, when I save a JPEG, at, say, 150 dpi, and send it to a PC based client, client can't see it or open it? I have to do "Save for Web", but then it gives me only 72 dpi option? What's the answer? I want to send a 150 dpi JPEG, and a PC person to see it in their email?
Thanks!!!

You are making images for screen/web. Use Save for Web.
Also, make sure your file is RGB (preferrably sRGB) as CMYK is not a part of the JPG standard and is not supported in most applications outside the Adobe package (like web browsers, e-mail clients, word, etc.).
Under image size you have to look at the size in pixels. If the "ppi" setting is set to 1 or 999 it will still be the same physical pixel size on web (ppi only tells your printer how large to print it, nothing else).
Tip: Stop using EPS for raster images (unless you are still using an old version of Quark). It's not good. Use PSD, TIF or JPG for almost all needs.

    I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

    At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • For highest photo quality what should ppi be? in photoshop should I "Sharpen Edges" as in use for web?

    For highest photo quality what should ppi be to look good in Retina?  In photoshop should I use "Sharpen Edges" as I would for in use for web?

    There are about 1 trillion  threads and replies about the size of images to be used and accepted when using iBA.
    Obvioulsy you have not taken time to search the forum  before asking your question, nor do you seem to have downloaded the iBA asset guide.
    I suggest you go to Apples iPad page on the store and check the screen dimentions/ resolution for a non mini  iPad retina. DPI at 72 or above is your choice.
    I also suggest before setting out on a book project, you take time to read the forum and download the PDFs which are available.
    A KT states in effect - first do your own home work before starting out asking questions and that way you will avoid the proverbial self inflicted wounds - which will follow because  it seems you have not yet actually spent time learning about iBA or read the  help files.
    This forum will gladly spend time and effort to help folk... but most dont  really have time to continually  givie answers which already exist on the forum.

  • IPhoto changes my dpi while editing - what to do?

    Hello!
    I have iPhoto 6 and have taken over 500 pictures for a wedding. Now they want to print bigger photos (A4) from my photos. All of a sudden we notice that all of the photos that I have taken with my Nikon D70, that are vertical have the dpi 70 instead of 300 needed for good quality print. Some of these pictures I have cropped but not all. I also have not turned all of them around. Most of them where taken the "right way" already with my camera. What I have done is that I have edited the colour or exposure in iPhoto. So why has iPhoto changed the dpi and why does it not ever notify me about this? Is there some way in how to prevent this from happening? Or change the dpi later in iPhoto? I can't possibly start re-editing each vertical photo in Photoshop, that is absurd! How can I prevent this from happening again?
    Thank you for your help!

    lkaranko:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The resolution has not been changed. It's the pixel dimension of the image that is the more important factor. If you take a 1600 x 1200 image at 72 dpi it will give you a 22" x 16.6" print. But if you take that same file and print at 300 dpi you'll get a 5.3 x 4" print.
    iPhoto just reports the resolution at 72 dpi which, if printed at that resolution would give you a very large print. If you select a print size iPhoto will squeeze the available pixels into those dimensions. The smaller the print size the larger the resolution will be.
    In rotating the files a new jpg file is created and when it's saved there will be some jpg compression applied. The original file is left intact and can be recovered by selecting the photo and using the Photo->Revert to Original menu option.
    The bottom line is: as long as the number of pixels do not change (or by very much) the inherent resolution of the file is not changed.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Adobe Elements 9 Slideshow to VCD and WMV: AWFUL Quality and No Slides Appear

    I have just creating a long slideshow  (~335 high quality slides) replete with music.  I converted it to a wmv file which resulted in a movie in which ONLY the opening slide is displayed.  The music plays but no other pictures appear.  Great.
    I also created a VCD fromt the "Output" option on the Slideshow screen.  The VCD works sorta, but the picture quality is AWFUL.  The slides look like little thumbnails blown up 10,000%.   I have high quality images in (what I thought was a) high quality slide show.
    The slideshow looks fine in Adobe Elements 9.  What happened???
    Is this typical for AE9 or am I missing something???

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, RAM 1024MB
    Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio sound card
    Update:
    I exited and restarted the program and tried the output options again.  The *.wmv file works now but the VCD is still lousy quality.  I tried the AE9 option to create a VCD with menus, but I can't find those menus on the finished VCD.  The VCD size is 250MB; my 335 slides should be close to 600 MB based on the size of the origianl pictures; no wonder the picture quality is terrible on the VCD.  Is there a way to convert the slide show to a VCD and control (improve) the quality?  The wmv file is 188MB, which is also too small, and i have that specified as max. quality.  As I said, it does look better than the VCD.   How can I export this slide show in max. quality?
    Thanks.
    Update Again,
    I realized that NONE of the wmv files I created from my slideshow in AE9 have worked.  The music background is fine, but the slides progress to a certain point and then they don't change again. The show is stuck on a slide about half way thru.  This is awful.  The VCD's have the same type of problem in addition to the quality issue.

  • Is the Aperture "Preview Book" option quality what you will receive as a book?

    Hey guys, so I've been working for several weeks on a book in Pages (exported as PDF to Aperture) and I have to say that the quality of the "Preview Book" option is horrible. I understand that exporting PDFs from Pages into Aperture isn't the best, but regardless the discrepancy between the preview book at 100% zoom and the original PDF is appalling. The main culprit seems to be text in general, and in my case it is Helvetica Neue Light. I'm assuming that very light and thin text just doesn't work well when printed. Everything else seems to be "OK", and a few pages that were done in Photoshop look the best. But is this what I can expect? That thin text will just look bad when printed?
    Here are the examples so you can see:
    Preview Book
    Original PDF in Aperture at 100%
    Now, has anybody else run into this issue? I can't be the only person who has designed a book in other software and imported it to Aperture and run into this issue. Is the Preview Book option WYSIWYG? Is this how I can expect the book to be printed? I would greatly appreciate your help on the matter.

    K so I tried the 600 DPI one and it was a little overkill! Regardless I've found that it's best to just do the thing originally at 300 DPI, in this case with Pages it's tricking it by working with that huge canvas. I tried create Adobe PDF with High Quality Print setting, and although it was the best quality of all, for some odd reason it didn't render certain things, and at random! Really weird. I also tried my own create PDF @ 300 DPI and I checked both that file (which came out to around 35MB) and the one that Pages exports and they were about 99% identical.
    The funny thing is that in Finder under Inspector both files show as 3900 x 3000 pixels, yet when imported into Aperture it's showing as a 50+ mega pixel file. Anyway off to bed, I'll finish the rest tomorrow. Thanks again for your help, hopefully now the book will come out as planned. =)

  • CFImage Functions and DPI / Image Quality.

    I am doing some work that involves taking images supplied from a product called Fotoweb and putting them into PDF files using cfdocument.
    We are noticing a degradation in image quality that seems to be coldfusion related.
    In the code below I am reading in an image @ 300DPI from the Fotoweb product. It is definately 300dpi. I am then writing the image back to a file without any manipulation and it becomes 96DPI.
    <!--- Read In The Image --->
    <cfset theImage=ImageRead(aUrlToGetImageFrom)>
    <!--- Write Out the Image --->
    <cfset ImageWrite(theImage,aFileToWriteTo,"1.0")>
    In production we want to be able to resize the image to 5"x7" at 300DPI in a pdf. However as soon as coldfusion gets involved we get bumped down to 96dpi.The image quality is very important as these pdfs will ultimately be printed.
    Is there anyway of telling CF to keep the image at 300dpi.
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

    You comparison method is seriously flawed. For 1 image to be at 72 DPI (a software supplied setting) & the other to be at 180 DPI it means that one image has been enlarged (180 divided by 72) 2.5 times more than the other to view it on screen. Zoom in on the good image until it's 2.5 times larger & see how it looks.
    Next thing you need to know is that camera technique becomes more important as pixel count increases. an 18 Mpixel image will have an 80% increase in softness over the 10 Mpixel camera from identical camera shake. To make any accurate form of comparison you will need to eleminate the possibility of introducing camera shake into the test. You will also need very similar lighting & the subject must also be stationary for all test shots. (IE that eye (or the person it's attached to) may have moved during one shot but not the othern

  • Illustrator CS5 javascript JPEG export 300 DPI & max quality

    I new to Illustrator CS5 scripting (javascript) and I'm trying to export an .eps to .jpg.  With image quality 8 and DPI 300.
    I've seen several post asking about this (only a few with answers).  Those answer aren't working for me though.
    I also found this post saying that it can't be done (http://forums.adobe.com/message/1103680) but it's pretty old.
    When I run the script I have it saves with a DPI of 96 which is higher than the minimum mentioned in the post above.
    Thanks very much.  A snippet from my script is below...
    var targetFile = new File(fullFileName);
    if(!targetFile.exists) {
    var type = ExportType.JPEG;
    var saveOptions = new ExportOptionsJPEG();
    saveOptions.qualitySetting = 80;
    saveOptions.horizontalScale = (300/72) * 100;
    saveOptions.verticalScale = (300/72) * 100;
    saveOptions.antiAliasing = false;
    saveOptions.optimization = false;
    app.activeDocument.exportFile(targetFile, type, saveOptions);

    You'll have to reduce the size of the resulting image file to achieve resolution you want. I just did something similar and the file was as expected 416.67% larger than the original. When reduced to 24% of the size, the resolution is 300 ppi.

  • Bad quality What U Hear

    I have been trying to find out the reason why my Xtreme Music card was recording What u Hear with kind of an echo no bass quality; and i have found out before i installed the creative console launcher the recording quality was great! but after i restarted after i installed it it reverted back to horrible quality.
    Is there a way to keep the quality while being able to control treble and bass?

    my Xtreme Music card also gives an echo and produces the sounds a bit higher after i installed all drivers again (did windows 7 upgrade)
    it only does it over speakers though

  • Updated my memory and now my speakers sound awful!  What happened?

    After I installed more memory, my speakers sound awful.  Any ideas as to what happened and/or how to fix it?
    MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 (mid 2009)
    8gb 1067 MHz DDR3

    I solved the issue and thought I would pass it along.  It turns out that I updated iTunes shortly before I installed the memory.  Some how the equalizer was turned on and the pre-amp was cranked up to max.  Not sure why as I never use the equalizer, I have always had it turned off.  Maybe the upgrade turned it on for some reason.  Once I turned down the pre-amp to 0, my built-in speakers sound just as they should, perfect.  Then of course, I just turned it off completely.

  • Lumia 930 awful quality of display

    Greetings,
    I bought Lumia 930 in Telenor(Serbia) few days ago to notice second day that I got awful "piece" of display. I don't know I had phone with IPS display last two years and I'm not familiar with AMOLED, maybe this is usual for AMOLED displays but I doubt it. So problem, actually problems are:
    - backlight is not strong enough(compared it with few 930)
    - backlight is not equal in all areas, you can see washed out stripes and stains on solid colors(obvious in dark environment)
    - backlight breaks out in huge area with high brightness set(more obvious in dark)
    - screen is blinking with high frequancy in horizontal stripes(happens occasionally, think it happens when IE is on)
    - and of course purple tint on low light set, but it can't be fixed
    I will take my 930 on warranty for sure, just wish to check is this something usual for AMOLED displays? And how this passed quality assurance?
    Thanks,
    Vladimir

    Pretty sad yes as Nokia and MS needs as little trouble as possible to get back on top which seems like they never will right now. Moving too slow and with a flagship having quite a bit of trouble.
    Hopefully your care point will help you out without trouble. Good luck

  • I have the latest Lion and Safari.  I am having great troubles with Safari in performance.  FireFox works great, but Safari updated 5.1.2 is awful.  What can be done to fix the latest version?  I have tried everything!

    Is Apple going to fix Safari 5.1.2?  It has been a nightmare for since the update.  I only had my Mac for a short period of time and didn't have the problem when I started. It all started when the update was loaded.  It is puzzling when Mozilla FireFox works better, but slower than the Safari.  I was told this browser was the best to use for Macs.  I am not seeing it!  I have empty the cache, reset Safari, and reset the prefences.  I still can't images, server not found error, or best yet-not connected to the internet when the news ticker is running.  What more can I do so I can make use of Safari?  I am tired to reset and clear cache every time I wish to go browse.
    Thank you!

    Hey, everbody:
    I finally threw in the towel and called tech support since it is free for me for the moment after making my post this morning.  They fix my Safari problem!  First, they had me do a shut down and unplug the computer for 30 seconds.  This idea didn't work for me.  Then they had me go and change my DNS from my IP address that was listed to the following:
    Go to System Preferences
    Click on Network
    Click Advance
    Click on DSN
    Under DSN Severs there is a plus sign.  Click on it.
    Type: 8.8.8.8
    Add another by clicking the plus sign and Type: 8.8.4.4
    Go back to the beginning--main page and push the Apply button and then close.
    Open Safari to see if that works
    This works!  So far my Safari 5.1.2 is working like it was before the update on Lion and Safair package!  I hope this will help some of you.
    Thank you for trying to help me with my intitial question, but it turned out that I needed help from support and fix my DNS.  This may not work for all of you, but I hope for some it can relieve the stress.

  • PDF Watermark - awful quality?

    I am trying to setup a simple automator printing workflow:
    [x] split pages
    [ ] add watermark(s) using pdf/eps or svg as images
    [x] join pages
    it does work using pixel images (png or jpeg), but the quality is absolutely horrible.
    Is there any way to use this function in a way that renders crisp images/text?
    The idea is to automatically add a letterhead to documents that ouput as pdf via the print panel. Unfortunately this is not possible within the application itself and I'd like to rid myself of having to insert it manually via acrobat.
    any help is greatly appreciated.
