7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar

Hey there
I'm new to this forum...
Has anyone tried the 7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar in the 12" Powerbook..
After 5 years of very happy computing, I am upgrading my poor battered laptop.. It now has the max ram and I want to speed up the drive.. I have read about the heat and battery issues but will try it anyway..
Cool forum BTW
Billy

Unless I am mistaken, Hitachi's 2.5" 7200 RPM 200GB Travelstar is a Serial ATA drive, which is not compatible with any PowerBook since they use Parallel ATA (aka IDE).
The largest compatible 7200RPM drive currently available is the 100GB Travelstar. However, if you want the capacity, then Western Digital's 250GB 5400RPM Scorpio is the largest you can get, and the speed isn't too bad. Other good but less capacious alternatives are the 5400RPM 160GB offerings from Hitachi and Seagate.
Unless you are doing highly disk intensive work, the speed difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM should be hardly noticeable in day-to-day usage.

  • Hitachi TRAVELSTAR or Seagate MOMENTUS? need a 7200rpm 100 gb internal HD

i think the title sums it up, i need a 7200rpm 100 gb HD for some music editing and cpu intensive tasks. i dont want to tie up my firewire or usb port yet as i have other uses for them (midi keyboard, license key, audio i/o). now i'm looking at the Hitachi TRAVELSTAR and the Seagate MOMENTUS. done a little research and read that the Hitachi is slightly faster but runs slightly warmer and can be noiser. anyone whos updated their internal HD have any opinons, recommendations or general ideas or suggestions to add?

Was in the same position as you about a week ago. Spent a whole day researching which one was better and still didnt know which one to decide! lol... have you checked out this review:
    http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/mobile-hdds/index.x
its a very detailed report on both drives. both drives are actually very good, from this review i chose seagate in the end cos it is meant to be quieter and also performs very well. however when i did get my drive it vibrates ALOT, the whole keyboard area was shaking and seeking was loud! this is meant to be common-ish bcos of the 7200rpm but a quick email to seagate and they replaced my drive straight away.
    seagate has 5 yrs warranty!!
    hope this helps

    Hi.

    machine model: Powerbook 6,1
    CPU: Power PC G4 (3.3)
Swapping out a broken Toshiba 55.89 GB drive.
I'd like to buy the Hitachi Travelstar 7k100

Will it work with my machine?

Yes. Good choice, it performs well:

This 7200rpm will not have a dramatic impact on battery life above a 5400rpm drive.

  • Hitachi Travelstar HD always spinning?

After following some advice from here, and reading many past threads, I installed a new Hitach Travelstar 7200rpm 100Gb HD into my Ti. The installation was a little fiddly but I got there in the end.
Since I installed it ive noticed a constant "spinning fan" noise coming from beneath the trackpad area, which is where the drive's located.
Is the constant "fan like" noise normal operation?
Everynow and then i'll hear louder "scratching" noises which from my understanding is normal HD operation, but the "fan like" noise concerns me.
Only I never noticed such a constant noise from my old 4400rpm drive.
    Powerbook Ti 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I similarly recently installed a 60 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm in my TiPB 867 replacing the original 40 GB 4200 rpm drive.
That spinning "fan like" noise you hear is normal, It is the drive itself. I had the noise with my 4200 drive and it took me quite a while to realise that the noise was not the fan at low speed. If the noise seems louder then it is because the drive is spinning much faster. When the fan(s) come on you will notice the noise difference. Actually I am now not sure of the speed advantage of 7200 v 4200/5400 because the fan(s) come on earlier than they used to, which is of course quite normal. I know the fans have no effect on the drive speed but it just seems to somewhat negate the speed increase when the fans come on earlier. And I suspect that the "average" home user can not really tell the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm. Certainly more modern PBs than ours are better designed to handle higher speed drives.
The way to tell if the noise is your drive is to spin down the drive either thru the Energy Saver prefs or the Terminal commands without the PB going into deep sleep.

  • Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 question

    Hello,
I got my new MacBook today.... (its perfect)... no cow related issue etc.
    I put my 2Gb Ram in... Champion... but I looked at the 7200 HD I bought, the following;
    Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100gb Ata6 2.5in 7200rpm 8mb
And the there are pins at the bottom, which looks very different to the bottom of the 60Gb HD that I took out.
I'm not sure what is going on... I din't try to install the HD yet, I thought I better double check here 1st.
    Any suggestions?

Basically you bought the wrong model drive. You should have purchased an SATA version.

  • Windows 7 won't install on MBP with Hitachi Travelstar (bootcamp)

Hi, I recently upgraded the hard drive in my mid-2009 2.53 15" to a Hitachi Travelstar 7k500. When working in OS X the hard drive is awesome but I have been having problems with installing Windows 7 under bootcamp in Snow Leopard or Lion. I have tried (a lot) to install windows using both 32 and 64 bit versions from original discs. When installing it appears as though it has installed and on restart I get a variety of different errors each time I have tried to install. I either get NLS data not found, kernel missing or an error occurred.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing these problems? Is anyone using this hard drive with bootcamp? I have tried reinstalling OS X and tried bootcamp with Snow Leopard and Lion.
    Thank you

  • ERROR 2010 when installing Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB Hard Disk

    I have just purchased a Hitachi  Travelstar 5K160 160GB 2.5"  Hard drive
I have it installed in a Lenovo T43 Laptop and I get the following error from the BIOS
    ERROR 2010
The Hard drisk drive that you have installed has not been qualified for use in this computer or does not have
    latest firmware
It allows me to continue <ESC>
I have formated the disk and installed the Fedora OS and everything is fine
1:  Do you know what is causing this and how do I fix it
    or
2: How do I turn off the error message ?

There is a firmware update utility on the Lenovo Support and downloads site you mite try. I have 2 Hitachi HDD's in my machine one of which needed the firmware update. It worked for me.

  • Recently installed a 1TB hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook 10.6.8  however Time Machine says not configured hence cannot back anything up

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
    Can anyone help ?

You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over.

  • Hitachi Travelstar 7K200series - 100GB/200GB the fastest?

Been looking to upgrade to a 7200 RPM drive. I was looking at the specs, and the Travelstar 7200 RPM drives seem to be among the fastest 2.5 drives on the market. However - when checking the datasheet, it mentions that the 100GB and 200GB versions have the highest areal density (bits per unit area) at 164 Gbit/sqin while the 80/120/160 GB versions are 132. This seems to translate directly into a media transfer rate of 876 Mbit/sec compared to 695 MBit/sec. I'm pretty sure that the transfer rate is slower than the SATA150 interface is capable of handling.

Does this really make a difference? I do a small amount of storage on my internal drive - mostly PDFs, ripped music, and some data. Of course program files would go on my HD. Altogether I use less than half my MacBook's 120 GB drive capacity. I do most of my storage (photos, etc) to at least two external drives.
Anyone have an idea if it would make sense to get the 100 GB version simply based on the increased speed? I don't anticipate needing the 200 GB version, as it costs more than twice the price from Newegg.

  • HITACHI Travelstar 7K200 200gb for my MBP??

Hey guys. I have the original MBP Core Duo with only 80Gb of space! lol. I think its time for an upgrade. I'm planning on doing this myself since AppleCare has expired but my question is...
is this Hitachi HDD compatible w/ my MBP? I've seen someone on ebay selling his Hitachi because he couldn't install it on his powerbook. Aren't the PB and MBP the same dimensions??
    Any input would be great!

    Hi,
    according to this http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.9958814a08a37d75797ecae2eac4f0 a0/
the drive should be 100% compatible with your MacBook Pro.
And since this drive is obviously only avaiable with SATA data-connector you can't do anything wrong.
The difference to the PowerBooks is not the dimensions of the drive (2.5") with the data connection, which is IDE (or PATA) with the PowerBooks whereas the MacBook Pros use SATA.

  • New 7200RPM 200GB HD errors

Hi. I just installed a new 200GB 7200RPM SATA HD from Hitachi. Great size. Good brand. Here's my problems.
    1. Seems slower then my original 120GB 5400RPM HD.
    2. Seems to hang up on itself after a task. Any task. From deleting a file in iPhoto, to playing a song in iTunes.
    3. Mail quits on me when I try to add a Exchange Account.
    4. Toast 8 quits a lot when adding files from the media browser.
These are the same programs I've used for the last 6 months. I had no issues before.
Any ideas on any of these? Anyone else upgrade their drives to one of these new 200GB 7200RPM Hitiachi's?
    Please help.

Hello! Sorry, no. Erasing using the zero all data option destroys all data. New drives sometimes have bad blocks on them which would be mapped out with the erase using the option I mentioned but a standard erase or initialization only creates a new directory. If the directory happen to fall onto a bad block then the data can't be read and written reliably. I recommend Diskwarrior to keep directories in good shape. It's a "must have" Mac utility. The problems you are having could be a bad block or the installation not quite right or a directory problem. It's really hard to say what it's going to take to solve the problem. You can do an "archive and install" which doesn't erase anything. It only creates a new system. I'd probably try that before resorting to a complete erasure. I'd also run the repair disk function first and also repair permissions. Tom

  • Seagate momentus 100gb vs. hitachi travelstar 100gb

I'm looking to upgrade my 60gb 7200rpm HD in my powerbook to a 100gb, 7200rpm drive. after searching online, i've found the hitachi drive as cheap as $208US and the seagate as cheap as $297US.
according to the data sheets i've downloaded from both drives, the specs are very similar. i currently have a hitachi 60gb and has been rock solid for almost 2 years. if you were to decide, NOT factoring in price, which drive would you choose?
    thanks everyone.

Stick with the devil you know and also see if they have been launched as I have looked also a few days ago and some of them was not yet on the market.
Only Mce was on the market at that time, but I do not know Mce products as to reliability or quality.

  • HD Upgrade--Hitachi Travelstar 320 w\$30 rebate

    To all,
Although new, I am upgrading my hard drive. I figured I would go with a 7200rpm, 320 gig. I was originally going to buy the Seagate Mementus v3, but while searching for that model, I came across the aforementioned. For a total price of $169 after rebate, I do not think I would find a better deal. Especially since the Hitachi 320 is a 24/7 drive.
Anyway, since I am new to Macs, I did a search for the proper procedure. It was then when I realized how many of you were upgrading. I therefore concluded that others would be interested in this drive. Here is where I found it: https://eshop.macsales.com/

I put the new drive in the other night. The install was easier than I thought it would be. I used the install disks along with time machine. I followed the instructions at www.ifixit.com to take apart the case. In short, the entire install, not including backup and restore, took about forty minutes. Keep in mind, I was being extremely diligent and careful, checking every screw along the way. Any way, thank you all for the help. Yes, I do notice a difference in the system performance and no there is not one in the battery life. If you look at the spec. sheet, the new 7200rpm batteries do not use any more battery life at rest than the older 5400rpm batteries at read. Also the Hitachi hard disk is one of the most battery friendly drives on the market. In standby it runs on 0.2w at full read/write it is at 1.8w. The Seagate 7200 is 2.3 and 2.5 in the same modes--major difference especially over several hours, so you can see how battery usage can be a consideration in some configurations.

  • Is Hitachi travelstar external HD compatible as a Mac Startup drive?

I have downloaded SuperDuper ant the 1st thing they want me to do is be sure
my external hd can ge used as a startup Drive. Is anyone familiar with the travelstar? Will it work? It is only 100gb. Should I just us it for media data storage and just buy another larger external hd that have been recommended for the mac for cloning my hard drive as well as 2nd backup for media data?

  • 160GB 2.5" Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 5400RPM SATA

I plan on ordering this drive later this afternoon and will be installing it myself. I've reviewed the video that explains how to get to the drive and such, seems very straight-forward.
If anyone has concerns against getting a drive such as this, go ahead and let me know.
I like to keep allot of pictures and such locally on my laptop and the 100GB drive is not going to cut it, for that matter, it's only a matter of time before the 160 doesn't cut it, but by that time, the 200+ drives will be out.

Apple says by it self that the Macbook has " user-replaceable hard disk".
The Macbook Pro doesnt have one, according to Apple. So it does really mean that your will void your warranty. I have done quite a lot off HD replacements at Apple Care, and i can promise you, if you have never opened a Powerbook or Macbook Pro, it is not as easy as it looks like. You need some times to use some force, and that is scary to do witch your new beautifull Macbook.
As far i know, there are no 7200 RPM drive witch 160GB space. If you dont use really "HD speed requiering" aplications, then i would advice you to take a 5400 RPM drive. The "slower" drives are not really that slower, and they can have much more shocks. The faster drives are making much more noise, which is really ennoying .
I you are not often using files which are bigger then 1000mb, then you need a benchmark too see the differents between the 7200 and the 5400. Remember, the RPM does not say much, it is all abaut the Read Seek Time and Write Seek Time. There are 5400 RPM drives who are faster then the 7200 ones.
I hope this is helpfull to you.
