720p converting to 576i

Hi!
I have a problem exporting a 720p50 Project to mpeg2 DVD.
Premiere Export Option only give me the possibility to 25p.
25p is no option because of bad artefacts in fast moving parts of the Movie.
Adding Fields doesn't work, because the only result is horizontal lines in fast moving elements of the Movie.
Does any one now a way doing the conversion to SD 50i?

I tried that too, but the outcome was not good. I had many interlaced lines in the movie...especially with fast moving object.

  • Even on widescreen letterbox 16:9, still losing some edges

O.K. here's the deal. I'm burning a DVD of footage that's a 720p, converted to SD. I think all the settings are correct for 16 by 9 Widescreen Letterbox, but when I watch the DVD back on the player I notice that some of the image is still being cropped a little on the sides. The reason this is unacceptable is that I have a shot where a character walks to the edge of the frame, but stays there on the screen. In the DVD they disappear off the screen. Is there a way to control the aspect ratio even more so that I can shrink the size of the footage on the screen to a point where I can see everything?

What you guys are running into has nothing to do with a software problem. It is what is known as overscan in video. Every television will project the image beyond the edge of the viewable area of the screen. This has always been a bit of an issue, but knowing that it happens is the key to success.
Final Cut and any other NLE will show you this area if you activate the Title Safe indicator in the canvas. It will show you two green boxes at the edge of the screen. The inner box is the title safe; where you should keep titles within. The outer box is the Action Safe, or Overscan area. This tells you where most televisions will cut the image off at. This is meant as a guide to help you know where you can place things. The problem is that videos or DVD on a computer monitor ignores this little fact and shows you the entire edge. I have know idea why this was done because it's such a huge discrepancy with what has been an established standard.
Unfortunately for your film where you have your actor at the edge of the screen there's not a lot you can do. the only way to really correct for this is to shoot with overscan in mind in the first place or you might try to shrink the entire film in the frame a bit - which will give you black space on either side.
Look up overscan on Wikipedia for a ton about what is going on.
    Hope this helps.

Of course I'm changing the scale. That's how I'm working around the problem. I'm using the "motion" tab in final cut pro in the clip to "shrink" the image and then exporting it with the black square around it. The compressing it to an mpeg2. Is this going to reduce the quality of the image? So far, it solves the problem on SD monitors. But on the computer DVD player you do indeed see the black edges. I'm torn here, because I want the best quality image, but I also want the audience to actually see the edges of the film.

  • High Definition - is 802.11N Draft standard fast enough for streaming?

My understanding, from what I've read, is that 802.11n draft standard is actually only running at 50% speed of the actual final 802.11n protocol that will be out in a couple of years.
If Itunes starts selling HD content or I import an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc to Itunes, is the 802.11n fast enough to be able to stream this content to Apple tv? Has anyone tried this?
    Thanks!

50% speed of the actual final 802.11n protocol that

No. No idea where you got that idea. Right now the Wi-Fi alliance is "certifying" 801.11n Draft 2.0 devices. It is called "draft" simply because it won't be formally approved until 2008, given the normal standardization schedules. Between draft and approved final there may be changes, but they are usually minor, so much so that sometimes a firmware update may do the job.
If Itunes starts selling HD content or I import an

First of all, don't expect iTunes to provide HD-DVD or Blue-Ray format files any times soon (I mean expect years before you see that). These are 1080p formats, which are NOT supported by the Apple TV. Apple TV does support content with a maximum resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, which can be considered "720p" HD content, though not at the full cable frame rate.
Yes, Apple TV can stream this content. I have converted several HD programs captured from ESPN (which broadcasts in 720p), converted them to H.264 at 1280x720x24fps using MPEGStreamClip (http://www.squared5.com/) and stream them to my AppleTV.

  • 1080i and 720p footage going to 576i DVD?

    Hi.
Just getting my head around the best way to attack this.
I have a pile of 1080i and 720p footage which needs to be edited together with the final destination being a 576i DVD.
Now, being a country that uses interlacing and as at least half of my footage is interlaced, it seems a bit of a waste to
convert the 1080i to 720p and then convert it all back to interlaced again with the DVD encoding. So wondering about the merits of an intermediate 720i timeline? So the same settings as the 1080i but 1280x720 dimensions.
Is this a good/bad/stupid idea? Any better way to do this?
    Thanks a lot

1.) They will be the same aspect ratio (16:9, square pixels), but each will take up more or less room within the frame than the other.
2.) If you start a 720p sequence, then yes, anything larger than 1280x720 will need to be reduced to fit entirely within the frame.
3.) You can select "Scale to Frame Size" by right clicking on the video clip, or manually resize the video through the source video's Effect Controls box. In addition, with the advent of CS4, Adobe has added a nifty little feature that was absent from earlier editions of Premiere, including CS3, and that is "Maximize Render Quality." This feature is checked from within the sequence settings dialog box, or selected from your export settings, and ensures that any footage that is scaled to fit the native resolution of the sequence will be handled appropriately so that it maintains maximum visual sharpness and resolution.
Keep in mind that there are different flavors of 720p and 1080i, so in future posts it would be helpful to designate which one you are referring to. For example, HD is defined as having a resolution of 1920x1080, and 1280x720 with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0, or 1:1. Panasonic DVCPROHD, through the use of line doubling, is actually 1280x1080 (1.5 pixel aspect ratio), and 960x720 (1.33 pixel aspect ratio), and Sony's HDCAM/XDCAM HD is 1440x1080 (1.33 pixel aspect ratio). Knowing exactly what format you are shooting in and what the native resolution you will be editing in will help maximize your results within the editing software and ensure that your video is not visually distorted. It will also offer you realtime playback direct from the timeline without the need to render, presuming you have a system that is up to spec.

  • Converting files to 720p / hooking up to LCD

ok, I have a few questions. I've recently downloaded some High Def 720p files onto my computer which i want to transfer to my ps3 so I can watch them in HD. as far as i know thats the only way it would work, unless somehow dvi -> hdmi cable would be high def but i don't believe that dvi is. Is there a good program for converting my HD files to a file that i can put onto my ps3 that won't take forever? I'm using visual hub right now but i don't really understand what format to put them to if i want to them to still be HD on my ps3. also would i be best off to just put the HD files onto my ps3 and just connect my computer to my LCD tv for files in non hd to save the time transfering onto my external and then onto my ps3? One last thing, has anyone ripped a dvd onto their computer into 720p before, how long did it take?
    thanks
i feel like i wasn't to clear so just ask if i need to explain something better

    Leo Cieslak wrote:
thanks, some guy at the mac store said dvi wouldn't do 1080p
He was misinformed. Single-link DVI is the most common interface
    for monitors up to 1920 x 1200 x 60 Hz, and dual-link DVI extends
the bandwidth to at least twice that. (iMac is single-link only.)
i have an optical audio thing on the back of my tv is is there
a chord i could use to go form my comp to that for audio.
Yes, the iMac's audio output "headphone jack" is actually an
analog/digital "combo jack" -- it will accept either a 3.5 mm
analog stereo plug or a 3.5 mm mini-TOSLINK optical plug.
The optical audio on your TV is probably standard-size TOSLINK,
in which case you'll need a mini-to-standard TOSLINK adaptor or
cable. I believe RadioShack still carries both -- or for great
    prices online, try: http://monoprice.com
if i have high def files on my comp it would remain high def
    through the dvi right?
Yes, DVI is just an older version of HDMI; the video signals
are electrically compatible. DVI-to-HDMI adapters just re-map
the connector pins -- no electronics or logic required.

  • Down-Converting 1080p to 720p

I shoot AVCHD 1080p form a verity of different cameras - but 99% of all my final projects are for the Web or DVD - no big screen and no blue-ray. I want to shoot what I can in 1080p for future use or projects.  My question is what is the best solution (free or nominal fee) for down-converting my footage to 720p for storage and editing?

Can I ask a related question here? (maybe in the "dumb question department) ...
I'm also shooting with a brand new NX5U -- which lets me shoot 1080 and 720 simultaneously (one to chip, the other to a flash drive). My projects also end up on the web and non-blueray DVDs.
So is the quality going to be better if I work in 1080 timelines and then import the final into a 720 timeline? Or is it going to look the same if I work in 720 right from the start?
I haven't run any tests to judge rendering time, etc. I'm assuming higher rez means longer processing time. But maybe it's worth it for better quality.
Anyone have any advice about this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How can I convert 720p 30fps AVI to h.264?

Appreciate any guidance on this matter.
I have almost stopped using my DV Cam once I purchased the Canon Powershot TX1 which records video in 720p 30fps in AVI container. For me to import these clips to my iTunes library so that I can view them thru Front Row, Apple TV and download into my iPhone and iPod Touch, I need to convert them to h.264 format.
What is the best way to do that? And the software should support batch conversion of multiple clips. Is Quicktime Pro the right choice for this?
    Thanks,
    New2AppleTV

    Hi Eric,
I have used Handbrake to rip my DVDs and then put them on my Mac Mini as a media server for the Apple TV. I love that tool. However, it doesn't work on .avi files from my camera (at least that is my understanding and I maybe wrong). I have used the trial version of VisualHub, but as you said the full version is no longer available. However, now that I can do my editing and retaining the 720p format using iMovie'08, I don't need any other tool. I am looking forward to iMovie'09 for chapter marking within the same tool. The current workaround of sharing it with Garageband for chapter marking is too cumbersome a process.

  • How do I convert 1080i 25fps to 720p 50fps

Hi. Most of my footage is 720p 50fps. However, a small portion of the job is 1080i 25fps. I was thinking to convert the 1080i footage in media encoder(h.264) 720p 50fps. Just so I can import all the footage into the same timeline. I thought I would make it to what most of the video looks like? Is there a better way of doing this?

You do not need to transcode the 1080 footage first. You can simply add it to the 720 sequence. Then right-click the 1080 clips in the Timeline and select Scale to Frame Size--or, if you have the current version, which is 7.2.2, the new Set to Frame Size option.

  • Converting 1080i to 720p

I have a Nikon D90 that shoots in 720p at 24fps and I just purchased a Canon HF-11 that shoots in 1080i which also has a 24fps selection. Can I use Mpeg Streamclip to downscale (not sure if that's the correct terminology) the 1080i footage to 720p? I would like to make a video in 720p in FCE but I'm not sure if I'm degrading the 1080i footage too much or if I'm going to run into some kind of problems later on when burning to DVD.
    Thanks,
    Ray

Well, there are multiple issues here.
One, you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to *Apple Intermediate Codec* for editing in FCE. But don't expect miracles. Your D90 stores video as *Motion JPEG,* which is obsolete vis-a-vis today's video standards. You will notice the quality difference compared to your HF-11.
Two, FCE only supports 720p30, so that is another issue you will have to deal with.
Three, you could use Graeme Nattress's Standards Conversion plugins to deal with 3:2 pulldown. I'm not completely sure it works with FCE, so you should contact Graeme to verify before purchasing the plugin.
Four, your HF-11 is an AVCHD camcorder, and I would not recommend mixing 1080 and 720 video in the same sequence. Even after going through the conversion hoops, you will see a difference.
Five, in order to create a hidef DVD you will have to purchase Toast and a Blu-Ray burner. Regular DVDs are all standard def; you can give iDVD hidef source material but you will still get a standard def DVD 'cause that's what they are.

  • Converting DVDs to 720p for iPad

I am converting my DVD collection to digital and am having issues getting anything above 480p to play on my Apple TV 1.  I am using Copy123 and it has an option to convert to 720p for AppleTV 1g, but it won't play.  The same 720p file works great on the iPad.  Does anyone have suggestions?

dvd's are nowhere near as high res as 720p
if you convert them to a higher res the quality does not improve it's basicly the same
as zooming on an digital image
every 1 pixel will just be 4 depending on how much one upscale
upscaling will never add new infomation to the image stream
so unless you have some crazy tv which can only play it's native res so would make a lower res then 720p only fill a fragtion of the screen keep media in it's original resolution will even save you space doing so and time

I believe the best solution is to capture from HDV into a good capture card(Kona) and bring it in as DVCPRO HD. If you have a PPC or new MAC PRO this is what it takes to have a good solid reliable HD product.

  • Convert 1080p avchd to 720p AIC directly from camcorder

Is there any software out there that lets me import video from my camcorder and convert it from 1080p to 720p Apple Intermediate Codec for use in iMovie.
Importing directly using iMovie generates 1080p material witch is slower to work with and takes a lot of disc space...

    MovieConverter Studio does the trick.

  • Convert 1080i to 720p

I´ve got some 1080i movies (even self recorded) and would like to play them on my AppleTV.
Can I use Compressor to convert the 1080i to 720p? Should I use FCP? What should be the correct settings in Compressor?
Thanks to everybody trying to help me!!

Compressor is best for this. The easiest thing to do is use the Apple TV preset located in the Apple > Apple Devices section of the Settings window.
The default settings should give you decent results but if you are looking for a high quality conversion, try switching on Frame Controls in the Inspector window.
Set Resize Filter to Better, Output Fields to Progressive and Deinterlace to Better.
It is tempting to just put everything on "Best" but this will take a long time to encode. "Better" will be sufficient for most cases.
