720p or 1080p for Apple TV High Definition Downloads

Does anyone know the specs of the high definition content that Apple will be offering for rental on the new Apple TV interface? Will it be in 720p resolution or 1080p?

it is, but it takes encoded video and processes it before output. The architecture/hardware of the system may not be beefy enough to handle 1080p.
Then again, maybe it can and apple will just need to update it. I'd like someone with more knowledge of the hardware to enlighten us.
Currently it's capped at 5000kpbs bitrate. My guess is that's the max the processor can reliably handle. It could be that 1080p HD material is more than 5000 kbps.
Just doing some rough math... if you're taking 480p and you just use some simple multipliers... you figure that 1080p is 2 1/4 times what 480p is that the processor might choke on 1080p alone when it tries to process it. Now consider that you probably need for 1080p a much higher bitrate as well... maybe as high as 5000 kbps or more... and I think it might just meltdown.
Could be wrong though. I'm not expect and like I said, just using a multiplier rather than really analyzing the relationship of resolution and bitrate to processing needs.
It doesn't simply "pass-through", though I see why people might think that.
i just used 480p cuz that's most DVD source material.

  • Compressor 1080p for Apple Devices (10 Mbps) Does Not Include Dolby 5.1 Audio Track

Compressor recognised my file's audio properties as: AAC 5.1 (C L R Ls Rs LFE), 48.000 kHz
I use the 1080p for Apple Devices (10 Mbps) which should include Dobly 5.1 audio track
After the succesfful completion of any file the output file only includes a 2 channel audio track.

WIsh I could help and was hoping someone else would jump in with suggestions. The surround sound work I've done successfully is limited to the legacy versions of FCP and Compressor. When I've tested it in the FCPX  to Compreessor workflow, I've not got it to work either.
I suggest you post your question in FCP X or Logic Pro forum to see whether you get some help.

  • 720p or 1080p for LCD TV display?

I'm looking to buy a new LCD TV, around 32-42 inches, for under $600 after taxes (7% sales tax). One thing I want to do is use that TV as a computer display from time to time, usually watching live streaming hockey games.
    What resolution is recommended?
BTW, my NVIDIA graphics processor HAS been replaced, LOL.

Doesn't matter - the MBP can drive an external display at up to 2560x1600 (which is much higher than 1080p). So, get whatever TV you like. Do pay attention to the TV's inputs. Assuming it has HDMI (it should) you'll need a DVI-to-HDMI cable for video. For audio, either a mini-stereo to RCA (for analog inputs on your TV) or a mini-Toslink to Toslink (if the TV has optical input).

  • 1080p for Apple Devices not working in Compressor

Was happy to see the new settings for the ATV3 in Compressor, but it doesn't work.  I keep getting a qucktime error -108 about a third of the way into processing.  Plenty of memory is showing in Activity Monitor.
I've tried both a short and long movie, with quickcluster turned on and off, both fail.
I've tried all the suggested fixes I can find.  Reinstalling Compressor, Stop/Starting/Resetting sharing, deleting preferences.
The same movies work fine with the previous Apple TV/Device settings.
Share from FCPx to ATV3 works, but it extremely slow for the longer movies, and I want to use Compressor and the quickcluster.
Is anyone else having this problem.

Some people (including me) have reported flakey changes in sharing after updating. (My issues, however, were broader than just Apple Device presets.)
If I understand your description correctly, sharing is working – just not for one preset – so it's questionable whether it's even Qmaster-related.
You've already tried the fixes I would have suggested – except you might also try Digital Rebellion's Compressor Repair.
Finally, take a look at this thread and see whether David's method works for you.
    Good luck.

  • Error 52 for the IDT High Definition Audio Codec

The audio on my HP Pavilion g7-1219wm Notebook PC had stopped working. I had tried several things to fix it, even the restoration, which had worked last night but then had the same problem this morning. Please help.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52501-53000/sp52666.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
If you still have no audio, open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services.  Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic
    Audio Service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Windows Audio
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
If you need to make a change to any of the above, just right click the service and select Properties, then in the dropdown box next to 'Start-up type',  select Automatic and click Apply to save the change.  Then click the Start button.

  • ITunes Store says all content for Apple ID has been downloaded when it hasn't.

I have multiple Season Passes for TV shows. When I got to Store: Check for available content after receiving the e-mail that the episode[s] are available, I get a message saying that there are no purchases to download for this Apple ID.
When I go to the store, I can find my pre-paid purchases and download them from there. It's quite annoying to have to manually download all my Season Passes.
Why would my purchases not be available for download using the Check for content menu option but available in the store proper?
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

I wanted to follow up here because the problem turned out to be a problem with iTunes billing, something that other people may experience. Specifically, turns out the account was blocked because of a billing dispute, and that dispute was caused by the iTunes store's practice of not billing some sales at the time they take place (in this case, days or weeks afterwards). This led me to believe a charge was incorrect and having the credit card company block it, which in turn led to the account being disabled (without explanation).
The iTunes store needs to improve their billing practices so that charges are reflected promptly in customers' accounts. Otherwise problems like this will occur.

  • Making high-definition discs

Frequently asked questions for playing back high definition video on a TV:
Q1. Can I make a DVD that is high definition?
    A. No, DVDs are standard definition by design. They are composed usually of mpeg2 video with a resolution of 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL). DVD players will only play actual DVDs.
Q2. Is there any way to make a DVD look as good as my HD video looks?
    A. No. You can make it look very good by encoding it with the highest quality, but it will always be standard definition. This will probably look noticeably worse than your source footage if it is high definition.
    Q3. Isn't HD-DVD a high definition DVD?
    A. No, it is a specific term referring to a format backed by Toshiba. It lost a format war to Blu-ray. To burn and play an HD-DVD, you need a special burner and special player. Although it is a dead format, some find it useful and inexpensive to buy an HD-DVD burner and HD-DVD player.
    Q4. Can I make a Blu-ray DVD?
    A. No, there is no such thing; Blu-ray discs are not DVDs. They will not play in a DVD player even though the discs look physically the same.
Q5. Can I make Blu-ray discs (BD) on the Mac so that I can see my video in high definition?
    A. Yes. You need a Blu-ray burner and Blu-ray discs. You also need to encode and author the discs.
The current software options are as follows:
    1. Use Final Cut Studio to encode and author a BD, using a BD burner.
Pros: Excellent quality, nice looking menus, subtitles can show the chapter name.
Cons: Only a few menu choices.
    2. Use Toast to encode and author a BD, using a BD burner.
    Pros: Inexpensive and fairly quick.
Cons: Limited choices of very "stylized" menus, chapters cannot be named, encoding quality may not be as good.
    3. Use Adobe Encore to encode and author a BD, using a BD burner.
Pros: A great deal of control over the whole process, allowing complete design of the disc.
Cons: Expensive, complicated, and prone to bugs.
Q6. Does iDVD make Blu-ray discs?
    A. No, it makes DVDs.
Q7. Does DVD Studio Pro make Blu-ray discs?
    A. No, it makes DVDs.
Q8. Can I do anything to put HD video on a DVD, with a standard DVD burner?
    A. Yes, you can make what is called an AVCHD disc. This puts a small amount of HD video on a physical DVD. The result is not a DVD, and will not play back in DVD players. It will play back in most Blu-ray players. Final Cut Studio and Toast have the ability to make these.
Q9. Are there other ways to play high-definition video in HD?
    A. Yes, if you play back from a device rather than a disc of some type. AppleTV and the Playstation 3 can play high definition video to a TV. There are numerous other media playback devices that are essentially hard drives with a specialized enclosure. Also, you can attach most digital TVs to any modern laptop or desktop computer, although interlaced video may not always display properly and might show combing artifacts.

Frequently asked questions for playing back high definition video on a TV:
*Q1. What are high definition and standard definition?*
    A. HD and SD are video resolutions defined by the dimensions of the frame size. Standard definition is 720x480 or 720x576 depending on the geographic location. High definition is anything greater than this. The two most common HD resolutions are 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Since digital video uses precise measurements of frame size, all digital video is either SD or HD.
*Q2. Can I make a DVD that is high definition?*

A game I've been trying to play always crashes, and the tech people told me to update my drivers. I updated my video card without a hitch, but for the audio drivers I get this error for my realtek high definition audio driver:

No one out there has any ideas what I can do? Apparently this should help me play my game, although it still crashes even after I updated my video card drivers, I don't see why my audio drivers would make it crash but it would still be nice to be able to update them just to be sure thats not the reason its crashing.

  • Apple TV 2: Slow Download / Loading / Ready To Play Times

I've been very disappointed so far with trying to rent TV shows to watch on my Apple TV 2 and I'm wondering if someone can explain the process it is going through before it allows you to watch something you've rented.
    Here's my experience so far:
I chose an hour long TV episode to rent / watch. Apple TV 2 tells me that it will be 45 minutes before it's ready to watch. This seems extremely long to me as I've got very fast connection speeds and the Apple TV 2 is hard connected to my ethernet (it's close enough to the router so that I can get away with not using Wi-Fi. Considering that downloads from iTunes are 720p, not 1080p, why would it need to download for an entire 45 minutes? If I try to rent the same show on my MacBook Pro, it is ready to watch within 5 minutes. Does the Apple TV 2 not allow you to start watching what is already buffered while it continues to download?
I decide to just let it download in the background and watch it another time. Two days later I turn on the Apple TV 2 and it says the show is ready to watch. So I hit play and I get "Loading..." with the spinny dashes ball. It does that for a while and then tells me: "Ready To Watch in 15 minutes". I wait for about 5 minutes before I get frustrated and just decide not to watch it again. If it has fully downloaded the content and says it's "Ready To Watch" in the menu, then why does it need another 15 minutes to load it from memory? It should be instantly available at that point.
    Any suggestions? Comments? Similar experiences?

There are two issues with the ATV2 that need fixed. I have a slow DSL internet hook up, but could still rent a movie with my ATV1 and start watching it in under 15 minutes or so. With my ATV2, I have to wait at least 1 hour to start watching an SD movie. Of course, we will never rent an HD movie on the ATV2 - tried that once - 61 hours for load time.
The second issue deals with restarting a current rent. We rented a movie tonight and let it take 55 minutes to load before we could start watching it. I assumed that if I stopped it for a few minutes (I needed to change an audio setting in the menu), that I could restart the movie without it having to totally reload. No deal. We had to wait another hour for reload. This seems like a simple software update fix. Anyone know if they are working on this?

  • Import of a high definition camera JVC for iMovie is that possible?

GZ-HD7U JVC is my digital HDD camcoder. I can import video by firewire cable?
When it does, does not appear any image. This camera is not on the list of cameras compatible with iMovie, but is recognized by the program. In spite of achieving import the recorded files in the camera for Mac by USB port, open in quick time and export in DV for iMovie for editing, but I would like to write directly into the Mac by firewire port, but I can not. The program does not read any image by firewire. Someone could help?

    Hello again,
I apologize for not checking the spelling.
Anyway, just looking for any advice to make a High Definition Photo Slide Show. I will buy more software if I have to. However, I cannot see that Final Cut will let me do this either.
    Merry Christmas Everyone.
    Craig
I have a nice collection of professional quality photos. These 8 megapixel images and are 2000 line plus resolution. When I use these for a screen saver on my iBook the detail is fantastic.
I have made a nice DVD using iMovie and iDVD. It looks pretty good. But the resolution is not that high. I understand that iMovie reduces the resolution on slideshows since it know the photos will be shown on a TV.
I have tried making the same DVD from the beginning using the 720p and 1080i settings in iMovie and then import into iDVD.
The final DVD is recognized by the high end DVD player as a 1080i format. However, the slideshow look not better than standard resolution. And I have tried all the various TV connectors (component, composite, HDMI, DVI, coaxial, etc). No difference.
    I would appreciate any input.
Do I need to buy Final Cut Express to get a true 1280 line photo slideshow.
    Thank you in advance.

I Imovie is possible and in aperture not?
I have only 2 solution, firsth, export file in 720p, second export file in hd1080, import file in imovie and with imovie create a file in 1080p for my apple tv3.
it is correct or there are another solutions?
    thanks

The described problem is typical of a cable issue, however if you are sure you have looked into this properly, then it could well be a hardware problem.

  • Quicktime Pro 1080p codec for apple tv?

Anyone know if there's a Quicktime Pro codec yet that will take original 1080p content (like home movies shot on a 1080p camera) and encode it to M4V for Apple TV at 1080p?  I think the "Export to Apple TV" in QTP-7 still encodes to 1280x720 doesn't it?
    Thanks!!

Although QTKirk has provided the most generic answer that should provide useable file, here are some additional details:
I think the "Export to Apple TV" in QTP-7 still encodes to 1280x720 doesn't it?
Unfortunately, this is true. The current TV preset creates files targeted for use on multiple TV models which limits the maximum resolution available.
Anyone know if there's a Quicktime Pro codec yet that will take original 1080p content (like home movies shot on a 1080p camera) and encode it to M4V for Apple TV at 1080p?
Unfortunately, the only QT 7 Pro option that allowed the creation of a 1080 H.264/AAC M4V file was the old "Movie to H.264" option which was replaced by the current mobile device specific presets. You can, of cource create a 1080 H.264/AAC MOV file using the "Movie to QuickTime Movie" method described by QTKirk or create a 1080 H.264/AAC MP4 file using the "Movie to MPEG-4" option and then either change the file extension manually (works with most apps that don't really check the file container type) or actually remux the data to a real M4V file container.
On the other hand, there are other, non-QT 7 Pro options available. I personally prefer the free HandBrake option here. It has separate presets for TV (720p24, 540p30), TV2 (720p30), and TV3 (1080p30) options available if you prefer that route or allows advanced customization to create your own preferred preset to directly create an anamorphic or non-anamorphic 1080p H.264/AAC M4V file. What you shpould actually be asking yourself here is not ifthe there is a work flow that can make your 1080 content but what are the actual goals of the work flow you want to use. For instance, are you saying "I want to create the best, highest quality 1080p non-anamorphic file I can and don't care how large the file is or how many hours it takes to make the conversion?" or are you saying "I will accept a high quality, anamorphic file that is playback efficient in terms of file space and streaming requirements and requires only a moderate investment in time for the conversion?" or something in-between?
