720p- Output for Screening at theater on Mac Pro

Hi
I've been working on the edit of an independent film. we plan on screening the film at a theater played off of a Mac Pro. I've been having a problem outputting the final film and am confused.
How the heck do you properly output "720p 60f" footage????
Is it 960x720 or 1248x702???
My original footage was shot in HDVC 1248x702 HD, but when I import it into Final Cut it shows up as 960x720???? hunnh I'm really confused. Then no matter what, when I out put the footage no matter whether I output at 1248x702 or at 960x720, my film titles look pixelated. They DO NOT look super crisp and clear.
I'm confused on how to output the footage.

Your video was almost certainly shot at 960x720 or 1280x720.
960x720 may be a pixel size, but it's not "square" pixels. If you're mixing new footage or effects, you should probably output at 1280x720, the square pixel resolution, using ProRes 422 for high quality, smooth playback. It's common for cameras to store only 75% of the horizontal resolution; HDV does 1440x1080 but it's always a widescreen image. Some 30fps flavours of DVCProHD use even stranger sizes, like 1280x1080, but the other size you mentioned sounds like a clean aperture or something similar — just use the full frame sizes in production.
If you're seeing black bars left and right and a squished image in the middle, your footage needs to be reinterpreted. If the sequence is ProRes 422 1280x720 and the footage should match but doesn't, set Aspect Ratio property (in the Distort value in the Motion tab) to 0 and see if that works.
A graphics card is a video card for these purposes. If you're playing back live from the Mac, make sure you're using 1280x720 with 60Hz as the refresh rate in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
If your titles look pixelated, make sure that:
a) Your sequence is ProRes
b) You're not using bright red or green titles
c) You have rendered everything
d) You're viewing it at 100%
Finally, make sure everything is rendered before playback and that nothing else is running or likely to pop up during the movie. You may wish to export the movie and play back with QuickTime Player or something else; if so, add plenty of black at the end.

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.

  • Can I connect screen wireless to the Mac Pro?

    Hello,
My name is Ben and I am a frequent Mac user.
I'm looking in to buying a new Mac Pro and I was wondering if it was possible to connect screens wireless? That way I would use the Mac Pro as an external server and instal my screens in different rooms throughout the house.
    Thank you.
    Dear regards,
    Ben

I would like to setup the Mac Pro in one room with a screen attached to it with a cable. In an other room I would like to have just a screen that uses the Mac pro as computer and storage space.
I am talking about Apple 27' inch screens .

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • Looking for advice on a new Mac Pro system mainly for Final Cut Studio 2

We are a small video production company that works mainly on broadcast and internet projects. We're looking to upgrade from an aging Avid system to a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio 2. The primary thing we want from this system is to be able to work quickly in Final Cut while at the same time doing other operations, and we're willing to spend what it takes to make that happen. We've done a lot of research but still have some issues where we could use your expertise - it's a big investment and we want to nail it.
    Here's the configuration we're considering:
    Processor: Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    Memory: 16GB (4 x 4GB)
Hard Drives: 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS (for OS X, Final Cut, & other programs) plus 2 x 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (for video storage)
    Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600
We're thinking about spending the extra $1600 to get the best processor available, since we want this machine to be the hub of the business for about five years. Any thoughts on whether to save a bit and go with the 2.8GHz? We've also heard the bus speed presents a bottleneck so the Quad-Core processing power can't be fully utilized - should that have any bearing on our processor decision?
The memory choice seems right - we'll see how well that works and retain the option to double the RAM, particularly as prices fall and new applications or hardware upgrades become tenable. However, we're thinking of perhaps buying some or all of the memory third-party - any advice on whether this tends to be worthwhile, where to get it, and what to watch out for? It looks like there may some issues with getting proper heat-sinking.
We like the hard drive plan, though we've heard a 15,000-rpm drive may generate a lot of heat - any thoughts on this?
The graphics card is where we're most torn - specifically between the Quadro 5600, the GeForce 8800, or perhaps even getting the computer with the standard card (or no card) and getting a different third-party card. We do mostly DV now, but we foresee doing HD projects in the future. We often use a green-screen that's in our studio and also apply minimal 3D effects as well as 3D text. We're debating whether to get the Quadro 5600 right off the bat and hopefully have no issues with it, or whether to get the GeForce 8800 for now and if we have issues then consider upgrading to the Quadro 5600 or potentially something else that would best suit our needs at that time. Would love to receive any and all advice on this issue.
Also, it looks like we're gonna buy Final Cut Studio 2 and are considering also getting Final Cut Server. It seems the combination would allows us to use the Final Cut suite on other computers (both Mac and Wintel) that don't have their own version of Final Cut installed. Is that the correct interpretation? Any other advice on whether to get FC Server would be appreciated.
Thanks very much for reading - we look forward to getting any and all advice you may have.

*Don't do it!* Stick with the dual-2.8GHz config. A jump from that to the dual-3.2GHz gains you only an approximate 9% increase in power at a 52% increase in cost! Not worth it all. That money is much wiser spent on RAM, RAID array, or a broadcast monitor.
    Memory: 16GB (4 x 4GB)

The processor is only one part of the whole, and as I just mentioned, the power:cost benefits are not good.

Quadro 5600 is pricey, but I'm not sure about its benefits for people in our field. Even if I had the money for it, I would be hard pressed to consider it considering, again, money is liekly wiser spent elsewhere.

I don't know much about FCServer, but my impression is that it is -- simply speaking -- Final Cut version of Avid Unity. In other words, I am pretty certain that your understanding on that is false. I may be wrong.

I turn on my mac without hearing the chime boot sound from Apple.. after that im always turning on my Motu (extermal soundcard firewire) i still got that message, by audio midi setup my Motu appears from some minutes and then goes away again.. The same time that my Motu appears i simply start a mp3 file to check if i got a sound but still no luck... Made all possible updates but still no sound.. I'm using Logic pro 9 and have lots of thing here to do.. Try also a hotline from Apple to call but im waiting like more than an hour and still no answer... Please any suggestions? I am afraid it can be a hardware problem
This problem came for the first time after i made an update in Avid Protools...
After that i tryed everything and still got no sound... Next step i FORMAT my Mac Pro.. Back everything UP and reinstall Lion and still '' NO OUTPUT DEVICES FOUND'', i performed a clean install.. Thats why i am afraid it can be a Hardware problem.. So, if anyone of you guys know something about it, please share your knowledge with me..

  • Screen dims randomly with Mac Pro - NOT a Macbook

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my screen will dim randomly when watching movies or YouTube.  This is on my early 2008 Mac Pro - not a Macbook Pro which seems to have this problem commonly.  I've searched and searched and lots of people have this problem with a Macbook Pro (battery saving feature or something) but there are no options to defeat screen dimming that I can find for a Mac Pro!! Mountain Lion just keeps getting worse and worse!
    HelP!

Hello, thanks for taking the time to help me out!
This is a 2008 MacPro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.4.
I am running two monitors: a HannsG HH281 and a Hewlett PAckard HP w2408h.
When this first was happening back in March 2013, I thought it had something to do with the ambient light sensor on the HP (the HannG doesnt have a light sensor), but it also might have has something to do with the dynamic contrast on the HannsG.  I had shut those features off, and I actually hadn't had this problem in a while and there has been a few Mountain Lion updates since then.
I just tried to reproduce this by turning on/off the dynamic contrast on the Hanns G - did not get the problem
again.  I also just turned the ambient light sensor on for the HP, and again, the problem did not occur.
So it is hard to say if the problem is gone away or not or if it just is not showing itself at the time being?

  • Lion designed for MacBooks and iMacs, not Mac Pros?

Seems to me that most of the major features of Lion only benefit folks using trackpads, which means mainly MacBook and iMac users. If you're a mouse-user all that built-in swiping and tapping is useless. To some degree, the same is true with Air Drop, great if you're mobile, but not so necessary otherwise. So, since I do 95% of my serious computer work on a Mac Pro, I see no benefit in upgrading to Lion. The only features that seem relevant are some of the lesser touted features like auto-save and maybe Mission Control, although that seems a bit meh to me.
Anyone care to tell me why I should invest $29 in this alleged upgrade?

    Nostatic1
I upgraded, had a look and then decided to go back to Snow Leopard. Lion was a bit buggy for a start, but like you I have a Mac Pro, and do a lot of design type work, not as a profession though. Auto save worries me, as I want full control over when I save when designing stuff. To have to go back through lots of saved versions to get to the one I want to keep would seem to me to just be creating more work for me. As I understand it, it only works in apps that are adapted to use it, so my old CS3 would not do it, but that direction worries me if I don't have control over it.
A lot of the new features can be switched off if you don't like them, which is what I did, so why upgrade? The new iCal and Address Book are horrendous looking too!!! Gaudy is the term that comes to mind. So is the full screen version of Photo Booth. Those types of apps look OK on the iPhone, but look horribly out of place on a Mac, where they have already taken all the colour out of the program window borders to leave a pale grey. I couldn't bear to look at them, and had to replace those bits of the apps with graphics of my own.
My advice is not to do anything for at least a while. It seems that an awful lot of posts in this forum are people wanting to know how to alter Apple's defaults and to switch things off. I am hoping Apple is watching and taking notice.
It seems to me that Apple has taken the success of the iPhone and iPad as its inspiration to change the Mac. I have an iPhone and I find the apps like address book that reopen where you closed them a pain. Usually I don't want that same person again, and I have to navigate back to my groups, then out again to get to the right person. It would be much simpler to always start at groups. I cannot imagine doing serious design work with my finger on an iPad. The two should remain separate entities.
This is the first upgrade that I have reverted from in 18 years as a Mac user, and the first time I am really getting worried that Apple is going off in the wrong direction - and the first time that Steve Jobs is not at the helm. I don't have a good feeling for the future.

  • Stuck Windows on screen in OS X, MAC PRO, X1900XT

    Hi,
After I installed the ATi X1900XT card and hooked up two screens, I am having problems with application windows being stuck where they are on the screen after awhile or intermitently. Firefox screens, MSN screens etc etc. I am unable to reposition the windows and/or unable to close the screen via the close screen button. Minimising and maximising he screen also does not unfreeze the window.
Has anyone had this issue as well?
I removed the 7330GT card which seemed to make the freezes less frequent but it's still happening. I haven't been able to detect any pattern when this happens.
    MAC PRO 2.66
    3GB RAM
All software is up to date.
    Help?

Might want to try Onyx to clean and maintain your system. You can check and repair permissions from within it also, but I do it in Disk Utility also. There may be vestiges of the 7300 drivers if you installed the 1900 before removing the 7300. May want to look for a corrupt plist for video also.
    Good luck,
    Michael

  • I paid for lion because my 2006 mac pro will not run anything newer (arbitrary decision by apple). Downloaded it, but nothing happened. App Store now says i've already downloaded it, so I can't try again. App store also says lion isn't available in usa.

I found out that an 06 mac pro cannot be updated to anything more recent than lion. They guys at the local shop told me this after they tried to update it for me so I could run logic pro 9 in 64 bit mode. I bought lion. Waited two days for the emails. Spent hours following the instructions which sounded so simple until you try them. Finally I found the "redeem" button that was hidden because the size of my safari window was too small to show it and there was no bar at the bottom to scroll over. Without googling "how do you find the app store" and "how do you find quick links" I never would have figured it out. I only mention this so that others may learn from my mistakes. Finally I downloaded lion, supposedly, but nothing happened. There is no indication that anything downloaded, other than the fact that when I try to download it again, it says it's already been downloaded. I spent four hundred bucks at the shop updating, plus whatever they charged me for lion, and I've still got snow leopard and logic pro running at 32 bits. I'm pretty sure nobody can help me, but could you please arrange for the return of my time?

You can go to "Purchases" tab and check again.
If OS X Lion is still not downloading, try at a different network environment.
By the way, Mac Pro (2006) with a newer graphics card runs Mavericks perfectly with modifications in the installer.
It's not allowed to be discussed here, but you can simply google how to do it.

  • Replacement Optical drive for (late) 2006 1.1 Mac Pro

    Hi all,
    Just a quick one: -
I have bought some new dual layer DVDs - Elite M Ultra Premium - to burn and they are failing on all attempts; with Toast, Disk Utility and on a PC laptop.
It looks likely that I Need a new optical drive, but I am limited in choices as mine is ATA, and a lot of new ones are SATA, so, 2 questions: -
    1. Whats the best/most reliable ATA optical drive I can put in my machine?
    2. Could I use a SATA one with a conversion or use a SATA lead fed from the motherboard - if one is available?
    Many thanks
    Barry

    Sorry Guys/Gals,
I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1, I seem to have posted in the wrong section [Mods, could you move please]?
Thanks so far for the feedback, I may yet go for an external, it's just that I don't have much room on my desk as I have my monitor and printer on it already.

  • Screen lag on 2013 Mac Pro with LG Monitor

I have a new Mac Pro (Late 2013)  with64 gigs of RAM and a 512 HD which isn't even 1/5th full. I have a new LG 34UM95 21:9 monitor for it.  When I drag files to the trash, I hear the sound of the files going in, but the icons take about 10 seconds before they move from the desktop (or any folder) to the trash.  Is this an OS issue, an issue with non Apple monitor support or something else?
I have not installed the Monitor's "Drivers" because, besides this issue, the monitor works fine.
    Any insight would be great.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
