720p project renders as 4:3 quicktime

Hey all,
So I have a 720p timeline (HDTV 720p preset) and when I go to export movie using compressor, I choose web download H264 800kbs - The resulting video is full frame (?!)
How do I render out compressed, 16:9 video clips from my 720p timeline at the highest possible resolution w/o being HD. I'm just looking for something nice and clear but playable on an average computer. HD video playback on some machines is tough, and the video stutters.
Thanks!

There are geometric settings within the compressor setting that you are using, but that's for the compressor forum!
My work flow would be to export that sequence as a self contained QT from FCP at original sequence settings Then, If you're looking for the greatest "all around" compatibility, I would use flip4mac to make a 16:9 .wmv file, or use compressor to make a mpeg-1 file. If you use compressor to make the mpeg, make sure to check letterbox if you're going to use a 4:3 size.
Give it a try. Let us know.

  • FCP 5.0.4 freezes when rendering or converting to quicktime on my macbookpr

FCP 5.0.4 freezes when rendering or converting to quicktime on my intel macbookpro. It really is very bothersome because I can't complete projects without rendering. I recently was just told that we should not download any updates at all for any appliction unless it is absolutely neccessary. Is there any truth to this. Would I be better off doing a complete erase and install to get rid of all updates that I have installed. My mac book is a 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs of ram, 200 gb hd, and 512 of vram. Help! My dead line is approaching.

What you've heard about Academic versions is correct. They are not upgradable.
If you want to run a version of FCP that is compatible, you have two options.
    1. purchase a used PPC computer (G4/G5) and run your version of FCP 5 on it.
    or
    2. purchase a version of FCP designed to work on intel processors (v5.1 or higher).
#2 can be satisfied by purchasing a used version of 5.1 (full retail install) on ebay. Alternatively, if you qualify for academic pricing, FCS3 can be had for around $900 rather than the $1300 for the retail version.
On another subject, the MacBook is hardly the ideal editing platform no matter what version of FCP you are running ...

  • Seeing jagged lines on external monitor in 720P project???

I just a purchased a Panasonic BTLH1700 to use as a braodcast monitor with Final Cut Pro 6 and even though the monitor and my FCP project are 720p mode, I'm still seeing jagged lines. I thought that was usually a 480i issue.
When you're working in a 720p project, should you be seeing jagged lines as in interlacing on the Panasonic LH1700???
Please help. Thanks very much in advance,
    - Nicholas
PS: The monitor is connected to my computer via component cables and a BlackMagic HD Pro card. Should I be looking instead at Matrox MXO??? I also used the SDI port and still have jagged lines on the external monitor.

    Hi Shane,
Thanks very much for your help. As far as I know, no, there is no downconversion occurring. I went into the Blackmagic settings in general systems preferences, and there is no downconversion selected.
So I don't know what's causing this. But would I be better off if I sold my BlackMagic HD Pro card and instead purchased a Matrox MXO? I've heard a lot of good things about it.

  • Screen captures for a 720p project?

What is the best way to take screen captures/grabs and prepare them for being placed in a 720p project?
    Thanks.

    1. Any idea what determines the resolution of the screen shot?
Usually the dimensions of the monitor, but you changed it and it still took it at 1920x1200...so you got me.
    2. What would I do if I want to bring in screen captures into a 1080p project and I want to do zooms and pans on these images
Make the dimensions larger than 1920x1080. You can do that in Photoshop. At least twice the size. Photoshop does a better upscale than FCP when it comes to stills.
how can I take a higher resolution version of these screen captures?
    No idea.

  • Trying to create PAL SD DVD from 23.98fps 720P project

I'm trying to create a PAL DVD from a HDV 23.98fps 720P project and am having a few issues. All the footage is PAL and I am converting it to an SD file as it is for an SD DVD however exporting through FCP gives me black frames, using DVD studio pro to convert gives me a freeze frame effect (both of which I assume is through converting 23.98 to 25 fps) so I was told to use Compressor. I tried this but can only seem to render out a 23.98fps file as NTSC, whenever I switch it to PAL it automatically changes to 25fps as my only option.
Any help would be much appreciated as my deadline is looming.

    Hi:
Are you sure that your footage is PAL 23.98 fps? I'm not involved with HDV but that sounds like NTSC frames.
What is the source of that footage?
    Hope that helps !

  • My 720p project is compressing to 702p

Hi, I have a 720p project in FCP X and every pixel matters as it's a screen capture so it needs to be totally visible edge to edge on the export.
When I export to compressor from FCP X I do so with a 720p preset but when it's done the dimensions appear 1248x702 instead of 1280x720 thus it is cutting bits of the image off around all four sides. How can I fix this??!!
    Many thanks

I've long had an incomplete understanding this, but I'll give it a shot.
The file you produced is  really 1280X720. But Quick Time crops it in its display…apparently to avoid showing any edge artifacts.
If you open it in QTX, and hit Command-i it will report 1248X702 (Actual).
And if you open in QT7, depending on what settings you elect, you may also get 1248X702…or 1280X720. The settings, BTW are in Window>Movie Properties.
Here is a document that explains the QT display settings and differences.
Although QTX defaults to the crop display, QT7 will display what you're looking for if Aperture Conform  is set to Production.
As a practical matter – uploading to YT or Vimeo – I don't think it makes any difference. I've never noticed any cropping after uploading,
    Hope this is helpful.

  • OOPS..... Editing a 720p project... now client wants SD instead... Help?

OOPS..... Editing a 720p project... now client wants SD instead... Help?
    Hi all,
I am fairly new into the HD edit paradigm. We shot a project in hd 720p to output as a 13 minute HD corporate video. Now my client wants a SD DVD instead. I have already edited the elaborate 13 minute piece in a 720p sequence (Complete with actors, green screen keying, animations from After Effects, and Titles generated in FCP.... yikes.
How can I change the sequence to SD? If I make the straight change in the sequence settings, every image and clip gets short and pudgy. Any pointers how to make this change-over as smoothly as possible?
    Thanks a bunch.

    No... yes... well...
To MY eyes, I like the smoothness that the bitrate used in the 90minute uses. Again, to me, the 60 seems a bit too harsh.
Of course I formed this opinion on older DVD players and TVs -- but I still stand by it.

  • General error in FCP re: rendering and export  after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

    Hi
My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
    (been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
    Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!
Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other....

    Hi There,
Thanks for your reply on this.
Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.
    Thanks!

  • PE 11: crashes when loading a project / rendering

    Hello,
I've been playing around a little with PE 11, and had several crashes and hangs for the last couple of hours:
    - hangs when rendering the timeline using the enter key
    - crashes when re-opening a project: Adobe Media Core CS6 has stopped working (Adobe QT32 Server.exe, QuickTime.qts 7.73.80.64)
    - sometimes getting 'unknown error' when 'sharing' this project as a high quality i
I can manage to re-open the project if i clean my rendered files and media cache, but it's extremely annoying.
I believe it's related to one of the video i'm using, a prores APCN 1920x1080 29.97fps.
I have no problems opening/viewing it using any tool on my computer, or by using the Organizer.
If i rename the directory which contain this specific video, try to open the project and remap the missing file with a H264 version instead of prores, it crashes right away.
The current virtual memory size and private bytes doesn't seem strange/excessive, and i'm also okay on the system commit charge.
I'm running up to date PE 11, and re-installed latest Quicktime just to be on the safe side.
I do not have any other memory/resources consuming software running in the background.
    My specs: Win7 ultimate 32bits completely up to date, 4gb, i7 940, GT 620
Any idea what could be causing this?
    /d

Thank you for the I/O info. With that second eSATA, and the free-space on each disk, I do not see what would be a problem there.
Take a look at this FAQ Entry: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/792580?tstart=0
It starts with a checklist on getting PrE set up properly, then goes into detail on tuning one's computer and OS. Finally, it has links to troubleshooting articles, with more links to tools to help in that process. Be sure to check out "Finding Clues," with the use of the Event Viewer. There might be some clues there, that will be helpful.

  • Themed Transitions not rendering in export to Quicktime

I just created my first imovie 09 project. I was using the Bulletin board theme and the transitions work fine with viewing in iMovie. However, when I *export out of imovie to quicktime or itunes not all the transitions render.* Especially the bulletin board transition. There are some other "standard" transitions that are not rendering either.
I am wondering if this is a bug or if maybe it is the settings like Frame per second and encoding that is some how cutting these transitions out. Since most of the transitions do render out to quicktime, I am going to guess this is a bug.
    Anybody have a clue?

    The file information shows:
    Apple MPEG 4 Decompressor, 960 x 540, millions 16bit, 29.97 fps
I just watched the rendered quicktime again and noticed that some of the Bulletin board transitions did render later in the movie but at least one transition is not rendering. It is very strange and bit frustrating.
I am not sure what it could be since it shows in the imovie full screen preview.

  • 5000 frame project renders fast at first... then... slooooows.... down.

Maybe you guys can help me with this.  I have a single ProRes 4444 Quicktime movie in a comp. No effects, no scaling. Just re-rendering the Quicktime to another ProRes 422 Quicktime.  It's about 5000 frames @ 1600x1200.
So it starts of blazingly fast.  The Est Remains shows 3 minutes! Yay!
Then about 1/3 into it... the...render..... starts....to .... slow..... down....
About the half way point, Est Remains: 14 minutes! Boo!
What's going on? Why is AE slowing down on a pure no effect, no compositing render?  How can I fix it?
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2/AE CS4 9.0.2 /16GB RAM/Mac Pro (Late 2008)

I totally agree, Szalam. But this was a test of AE. I noticed that my actual project with effects and layers 'n junk was getting progressively slower as the render went on.  Even the though the effects & number of layers remained fairly consistent (in fact, there were actually fewer effects and layers in the later part of the project, but the estimated time kept growing and growing.)
Todd, yes using 6 CPUs, I have enough memory for 2.27GB/CPU and 2GB left for other apps. I agree 14 minutes isn't bad. But when it screams through the first few hundred frames in seconds and then...starts.... to... chug.... and... get....slow... I get the Spock raised eyebrow expression .  And the fact that it stayed at "Est Complete: 14 minutes" for 15 minutes really makes me start pulling my hair out in large clumps.
I was thinking maybe I could break it up into segments? Render 1000 frames in one queue, another 1000, etc. Give it a chance to do clear its mental constipation by doing whatever internal purge it does when finishing one render and starting another? Does AE kinda fart out at really long renders?
You know the inner workings far better than I!
(And how's this gonna work with 64-bit? Each process can have have petabytes!)

  • DVD from 720p project

I have a 1280 x 720 HD project (ProRes 422) and need to export for SD DVD in 16x9 letterbox. What work flow will yield best quality in the correct aspect ratio?
My sequence settings: HDTV 720p 16x9 preset; ProRes 422 codec; square pixels; no field dominance.
Have tried various settings but I always get a distorted movie with the wrong aspect ratio. Please help.

16:9 letterbox is a little unclear. Do you mean a 4:3 frame that contains a letterboxed image, or a 16:9 widescreen image?
The widescreen or letterbox display is determined in up the DVD authoring application. You set this in DVD Studio Pro.

  • Using 4/3 clips in a 16/9 HDV 720p project

    Hi everyone.
I am trying to make and iMovie project which combines photos and movies.
Since my TV, MacBookPro aso. are widescreen, and more or less HD, I chose a 720p widescreen format (which has to be HDV for iMovie)
    Photos look great.
Themes look great, using photos or clips.
However, I have shot all my clips in SD (and very average quality) 640*480, which is 4/3 aspect ratio.(shot with a Sanyo Xacti C5, they are MPEG 4 part 2)
When I use the clips in iMovie without themes, I have black bars on the right and left.
That is expected, but I cannot zoom and crop the top and bottom of the clips.
And I have not been able to find an iMovie plug-in that does it, and works on an Intel Mac.
I do not even know if an iMovie plug-in would be the best solution, since it seems that effects can only be applied to 10 seconds of movie at most.
I thought about exporting the bunch of clips using compressor (I have Final Cut Studio, but am not a pro do not want to get into sàmething complex this time, and I like iMovie's themes), but I have over 200 clips for 2Go, a quite small and full internal hard drive and really like the convenience of keeping the clips in iPhoto.
Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

How it displays on a television set depends on the playback device not the application. How are you planning on putting this on a television set?
If you edit your material in an anamorphic sequence that will give you correct widescreen material with pillarboxed 4:3 material. Or you can edit in a 4:3 sequence which will give you letterboxed widescreen material and 4:3 material that fills the screen. Which you do depends on how you are going to show this on a TV. If you're going to make a DVD for instance, the DVD player will control how the media is displayed.
