720p25 and FCP5.1.2

Hello,
I'm french and I have read in several french forum that with FCP 5.1.2 there still remain problems with the HDV 720p25. They cannot import from the camera JVC-GY HD 100. Is there some people that have encounter such pb with this camera and FCP 5.1.2 ?
I ask this question because I want to buy one. But if there is to much pb with FCP, I prefer to buy a sony Z1.
Thank you.

It seems a lot of JVC HDV users are having trouble with FCP, which is unfortuante.
I have a Z1, and FCP 5.1.2 does work with it - but I still had some problems with it not recognising the camera - the problems went away, without me doing anything to remedy them (which means they might come back again).
The Z1 does not shoot 720p25, you would have to shoot 1080i50 and use compressor to convert to 720p25, and as a result, you would not have anywhere near as much control over making the 720p footage, if you really want 720p25, I would still get the JVC, or as others have suggested, step up to the HVX200, if your budget allows. I assume you are making a film, rather than regular video.
Do not use the cine-frame of the Z1's is you do get one, its better to work in FCP to make film like footage.

  • Mixing JVC 720p25 and Sony 1080i in same project

    Hi,
I am about to start editing a documentary that was shot using a JVC GY HD100 camera using 720P25 and a sony camera using 1080i (interlaced)PAL.
I captured all the JVC footage using LUMIER and the sony directly into FCP.
What I want to know is what is the best sequence settings to use, so that I can edit both in the same timeline.and have the best result.
I dexumed the m2t JVC footage and encoded it using Apple intermediate codec.
    any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I am using a quad with 6 gig ram
but if I do that don't i loose quality from the jvc footage?
may be go the other way, then I can crop the 1080 footage accordingly?
I intend to deliver in DV and DVD.
Thanks for the response, it seems not many people know what I am trying to do. But the director/camera man shot the documentary using both cameras, the Sony for underwater stuff and the JVC for interviews and other out of water stuff.

  • HDV and FCP5 HD

I am considering adding a Sony Z1 HDV camera to my inventory of SD cameras. Please can anyone help with some additional info?
Can I edit as normal in FCP5 but just in HDV?
Can I output to DVDSP4 and burn DVDs as normal?
Are there any other problems that I have missed?
    Many thanks confused,

    Sam,
Any ideas about this? I finished my feature film using the Sony Z1U. I downconverted the footage in FC2. After editing, I exported the footage using the NTSC Anamorphic; 48khz codec. I took that file and used Episode pro to compress it because I am not for what ever reason able to export the file while in FC2 through Compressor (Another story), Anyway, once the compressed file is completed I open DVDSP4 and place the files on the timeline, MPEG2 and AC3 audio. I do a build of the files and get a message "files were compiled" successfully, however, once I go to burn the files to DVD I get a list of errors that are unbelievable. I am not at my computer right now to tag those errors for you but the files continue to mux and when done, a message saying burn successfully completed something or other. I go to put the DVD in my DVD player and the only thing that shows up is the menu that I've created, nothing else. I go to the build directory and see the files there but to make sure they are there and working properly I open Apple's DVD player and try to play the file and I get a message that this "This type of media is not supported". (The disc I am using is a Verbatim single layer disc). I was totally floored. I was able to burn to disc prior to the upgrade to FC2. I've given FC2 a high rating and now I am eating my words because of all of the problems I am having with the intergrated software. Any help with this would be appreciated.

  • To Sony FX1 and FCP5 users. What is your HDV workflow?

After you edit captured HDV footage how do you export to a single file then re-import that file for "Print to Tape" without getting serious dropouts?

i edit captured hdv footage from 2 dif cams into one clip
export using current settings to a single file that i add motion graphics to in After Effect
import that file back into FCP5 and try to Print to Tape but i get alot of drop outs and pauses when going to tape.
wanted to know how you do it?

  • XSAN and FCP5 - Drops frames during capture

We are trying to capture video directly to an XSAN volume from FCP, and we get dropped frames usually within 5 minutes. Capturing to local HD works fine.
We've been dealing with these problems on and off ever since we got the XSAN. We've 'tuned' our fiber switch, reinstalled 10.4 and FCP and the XSAN software from scratch, ran all the updates to the latest stuff, and still no loving from the SAN environment.
I'm coming to the conclusion that this just doesn't work - does anyone else capture from a DV deck directly to a SAN volume successfully? If so, any hints or tips about what / where I might turn to get this working??
    Thanks!

    Derrick,
I have successfully captured from SDI with 8 Channels of Embedded Audio through the AJA I/O into the DV Codec (which ends up being 4.5 Mb/S) for more than an hour without a problem (directly to Xsan Volume).
If you are hitting a wall about 5 minutes everytime, it sounds like the cache in the controllers on the Xraid are filling up (1 Gig = 5 minutes of DV) and not writing to the drives properly.
I might sound far fetched, but just a though.

  • IDVD6 FAST on G5 Dual 2.0GHz and VERY Slow on G5 Quad 2.5GHz

I just finished a side-by-side test of iDVD6 on a 2.0 GHz Dual and a 2.5GHz Quad and I came up with some VERY disturbing results: The Dual was almost 2x faster encoding the same project as the Quad!
How is this even close to being possible?!
I have done the same test on 3 projects, and it is 100% consistent.
I have absolutely nothing else running on the Quad, but I can have photoshop 7 up and editing photos, downloading for usenet, QuickBooks 2006, and FCP5 open and it does not seem to affect the encoding speed on the Dual more that a couple minutes!
Both the Quad and Dual are pretty much stock except for additional HDDs and some extra Crucial memory.

Dual G5 2.5 GHz Dual Core, 2.5 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry, I forgot to mention this on my original post, but, while the Dual reported 100% activity on both processors while processing the iDVD project, the Quad was bouncing between 15-25% activity, occasionally dropping to almost 0% activity! Considering that the Quad was only running at most 25%, it finished the project incredibly fast. If the Dual was running at 25%, it would have been close to 8 hours to finish a 2 hour project.
ASIDE: On the Dual, in iDVD 6 I find that encoding of the menus and movie content consistent with Compressor: about 1.5 hours per every hour of video.
On the Quad, Compressor encodes an hour of video in less the 40 minutes, but iDVD is taking about 2 hours per hour of video content.
    A considerable degradation in performance!
Although, I do have the Final Cut Studio, I do like some of the themes in iDVD, especially iDVD6. Unfortunately, because DVDSP4 does not support importing of iDVD6 projects, I have to use iDVD6 to create the dvds (images, never direct to disc). I suppose I could always rip apart a theme and backward engineer it for DVDSP faster that it currently takes the Quad to encode a single iDVD6 DVD.
BTW: I do not have any 3rd party iLife themes or add-ons added to the Quad other than a couple Jam Packs, but on the dual, I have some www.dvdthemepak.com themes installed and it has not affected the Duals performance.
Note: as of yet, I have not done a speed test with the iDVD 5 or previous themes. It may be my next task after I finish up some other projects. Still, using older themes should not affect the encoding of the main video content. But, who knows.. mmm.
    Thanks

  • Sony DCR-HC42 and Final Cut Pro??

Can anyone verify that the Sony DCR HC42 digital video camera works with an G4 12" iBook and Final Cut Pro 5??
I want to buy this camera but want to make sure I can edit the footage with FCP.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked at Apple's Final Cut Studio web
    site:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/qualif
    ication.html
It doesn't appear on the certified list.
    However, googling the cam reveals:
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC42-Cam
    corder-Review.htm
Glad to help, but it's always good to be resourceful
    first.
The real issue is a G4 iBook with no second firewire
bus, the need for a firewire capture disk and FCP5.
You are not going to be very productive with this set
up and there will be issues of DF and throughput.
That iBook can't use much RAM
    best wishes
    Thanks, I appreciate the help.
I had already checked the FCP offical list - sorry did not mention in the post.
I had also checked a lot of other sites and found nothing clearly stating that the DCR-HC42 works with the G4 iBook and FCP - but I had seen a review from a customer (on some site) saying it did not work with thier iMac (where other cameras like Canon had) and they thought that it might be due to a video card issue??
As for the set up - not doing any major editing jobs so I think that I am OK.
Any more info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Can't drag playhead past end of window in FCP5

When navigating in the timeline, I can no longer continue "scrubbing" one direction in the timeline once I reach the end of the visible window. I can wiggle the mouse back and forth to force the playhead to continue scrubbing... but in prior versions once you drag the playhead past the end of the window, it scrubs in that same direction until you drag the playhead back into the window.
    Help?

I can't figure out the problem. I have it on 2 machines, both PowerMac Dual G5's, both running Tiger and FCP5. In virutually any window of FCP, when I move the pointer beyond the boudary of the window I need to move the mouse around in order to continue to move or scroll further in that same direction. The same issue happens for example in the Browser window. I assumed there to be some little setting I had missed, but I've done a fair amount of searching in the manual and cannot find a solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Edit one still image in PS and entire timeline needs re-rendering in FCP6

I've been using FCE 3.5 and FCP5 for quite some time. My projects usually have a large number of still image pct files in them. Before changingg to FCP6 (because I'm working on a 1080p project) when i would need to edit a still image that was already in my time;line, I would open it in Photoshop, make the changes, save it, and when I returned to FCP 5 or FCE3.5, only that portion of the timeline where the item appears would need to be re-rendered. But with FCP6, even if the edited image is only in aa small part of the timeline, the entire timeline is red and needs to be re-rendered. Any idea what is causing this major problem? I never change the dimensions of the file or the type. I might just adjust brightnesss ro do some in-painting, etc.

Cick anywhere in your timeline. Type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings or post a screen shot here.

  • Is it possible to export an FCP6 project in some way to read into FCP5?

I'm having an issue with the difference in video quality between FCP6 and FCP5, and I may need to somehow go back to FCP5 and FCS1. That issue is discussed here:
    THREAD LINK
Is there any way to export the project in some method that would allow the FCP6 project to be read into FCP 5, and work continued on it?

In the Browser SELECT ALL...this highlights everything. Then go FILE>EXPORT>XML. Choose XML v3...and v2 just to be safe. Then import that XML into FCP 5 and you should be good to go.

  • DVCPRO HD 720P25 FIREWIRE CAPTURE WARNING

I've just finished a job that required shooting DVCPROHD 720p25
As there's no PAL capture option yet we assumed that shooting on a Varicam over 60 frames and once captured at 720p60 it would convert over to a 720p25 timeline with no hassle.
    But we assumed wrong..........
This worked perfectly for 75% of the footage but the rest looked like it was playing a jumpy varispeed clip.
After hours of tests I found only way around it was to export the clip from an editing timebase 59.94 timeline, export as 720p25 and import back in.
(Trying to do this in the media manager rejected the process)
Again this either worked 1st time or took up to 5 attempts.
Eventually all the shots we wanted converted
I thought I'd share it with all you PAL editors waiting for Apple to pull their finger out and sort out a DVCPROHD 720p25 capture option
Come on Panasonic sort it out, the footage looks great but your doing us PAL boys no favours
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.33 GHz, 3GB Memory, Miglia Dualdisk 640GB (FW 800 88MB/Sec)

FCP 5.1.2 has support for PAL DVCPRO HD. 720p50 and 25. Your issue is that you shot 720p60 and are now trying to convert it to PAL. And you are doing so without using any converters.
You can try the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com (there is a demo available)...barring that you can have your footage transferred at a dub facility.
But converting NTSC to PAL isn't as simple as draggng it into a PAL timeline.

  • SONY FX1 and the FCP

anyone using the sony FX1 and FCP5? im trying to get the best import settings. also, do i just export it as MPEG2 if im making a DVD for mass production?

    hello ZJS,
i think i'll have to correct you here - iMovie doesn't do any encoding. Encoding is done by apps like QT or compressor (or iDVD, for that matter) and outputs a file with a different codec.
as i mentioned before, iMovie handles HDV differently than FCP because it uses the QT intermediate codec, so i think this is where your black bar comes from - anybody correct me please if i'm getting this wrong. i still recommend doing the following procedure:
    1. capture from camera to FCP and edit
    2. print to video from FCP to camera
    3. capture from camera to iMovie
    4. create DVD in iDVD and save as disc image
    5. burn with toast
you said before that you filmed in HDV and that's what you wanted to get out of it, please note that by making a DVD you will get Mpeg2 video which isn't really the same thing anymore. I have read a couple of threads reporting that image quality is not really good on DVD's with HDV material made with iDVD, but can't really comment on it as i never tried
    all right, keep us posted

  • Capture HD 720p25 non compressed through KONA 3

HI EVERYONE, it's the first time I write here. I've reached to capture hd 720p25 uncompressed material from my JVC HD-111e through KONA 3. To do this you need an XRAID, a KONA 3 and an AJA HD10AVA converter hd component/hd sdi. Ok, a lot of money. Results? No results. No apreciable difference between HDV 720p25 and HD 720p25 (a part from the weight of the files more than 5 times higher). Even in chroma key scene, no appreciable difference on edges of subjects.
    Two possibilities:
FIRST- HDV compression is so efficient that you have no reasons to capture non compressed 720p25.
    SECOND- I'm doing something wrong.
If someone had passed through something similar, I will accept every suggestions.
By now, my suggest is: don't spend money for capturing HDV in the native uncompressed format!
I hope that someone could deny me!

    Welcome to the forum steu!
The gain is in render times... that's the big reason to do this. You can't improve video per se by just upconverting it. The damage was done in camera when you shot the format. But any graphics you add, CGI's, stills will all be of better quality. But the REAL reason to upconvert to another format is to save time. FWIW, if you have an intel Mac, a better format to upres to is ProRes 4:2:2... that said, your chroma keys won't improve because the color information needed to make them clean wasn't recorded in the first place.
I'll give you an example... on my old trusty dual G5, compressing native HDV to SD MPEG took 10 TIMES longer than compressing from DVCPROHD. ProRes is even a larger file than DVCPROHD, so ya have to keep that in mind, however graphics, CGI stuff, and stills look much better to my old eyes.

  • New Installation = Pain and Frustration

    Greetings:
    This is my first post.
I have Dual 1.25 G4 at home with all the updates. After 3 years of owning a finely tuned FCP system, I upgraded to Tiger and FCP5. Things seem to be going fine (outside of my outdated printer having issues with Tiger) until I installed DVD Studio Pro 4 (upgrading from 2). Now the app is behaving like it's been lobotomized. I have sporadic and little control over the interface. Buttons won't activate unless, strangely, I hit apple-1,2,3 etc. and open a second solo asset window, etc. and it will crash when I try to import. I can't do much else in it.
I trashed, reinstalled, reinstalled again, repaired permissions, verified, rebooted, cursed a little. Nothing changed.
I'm a full time FCP editor running on quad G5 at the studio, but I get my dabbling and learning done at home. As the tree said to the lumberjack..."I'm stumped" (thank you, Ned Flanders).
This just seems all very wrong and I'm hoping for a "Hey you forgot to..." or "Hey you just need to...", but I have a bad feeling about this one.
    All help is appreciated.
