720x480 DV FCP Quicktime aspect shift in After Effects

It's probably something simple, but I've not yet managed to figure it out.
When I export a 720x480 DV/DVCpro NTSC quicktime movie from FCP 4.5 using either the export quicktime movie and export quicktime conversion commands and then import that file into After Effects 6.5 Professional and place it in a 720x480 DV NTSC composition, the video bleeds off the edge of the composition's viewer window on both the left and right sides. I am able to resize the video manually by changing the scale to 99 percent horizontally and leaving it at 100 percent vertically, but there is a noticable loss in quality, especially when I take the effected clip back into FCP. I can open the same exported clip in FCP without any aspect ratio problems or degredation of quality.
I don't ever remember having this problem before and I can't say for sure exactly when it started (maybe a month ago or so). I've tried everything that comes to mind including different combinations of pixel aspect ratios, frame sizes, etc., but haven't had any luck. Besides, it's a simple DV NTSC to DV NTSC. This shouldn't be happening!
I'm currently running the 6.5.0.97 build of AE and FCP 4.5 on OSX 10.3.9 with QuickTime 7.1.2 installed. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

In After Effects select the footage item in the Project window. Choose File->Interpret Footage->Main or press Command-F.
Set the Pixel Aspect Ratio to D1/DV NTSC.

  • Gamma shift  from After Effects

    Hi,
We had to apply graphic work over a QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit footage from Final Cut Pro.
The graphic work was done in After Effects.
The After Effect output was done using QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit, the very same codec.
...but all the footage has a gamma shift ( upward ) and a slightly increased color saturation...
    What's wrong ?
If we export Uncompressed 8 bit from FCP and reimport in FCP, there is NO gamma shift. ...so it seems to be an After Effect setting (or problem).
    thanks !

Well I must specify that we haven't had any problems with gamma when working between After Effects and FCP in Mac OS X. It's just if you bring some material from PC to MAC you might notice that graphics are too bright, because FCP thinks all the RGB material is made with gamma 1.8. So FCP maps RGB colors to YUV (television colorspace used by DV, Uncompressed 8-bit etc.) with gamma 1.8.
BTW FCP doesn't collaborate with color management in OS X. So it doesn't make any difference how FCP handles RGB material if you change OS X gamma to 2.2.
FCP works in YUV and After Effects in RGB so that's why you don't see gamma problems when exporting material from FCP. I think you should first check from Apple Software Update you have the newest Pro Applications Update. I remember Uncompressed 8-bit codec had this kind of gamma problem with After Effecs couple updates before.

  • Can anyone tell me what EXACTLY is Quicktime's purpose in After Effects?

I've recently deleted Quicktime since I never used it anyway but now when I open After Effects, it warns me that some options will not work properly because I have no Quicktime. Is QT a really crucial part in AE? What does it do anyway? I don't use AE profesionally at all, only for things like a little motion typography to use in videos.

It's exclusively required for footage I/O. If you don't use any of that, then you're nmot missing anything.

  • QuickTime not supported on After Effects

    Hey everyone
I have spent some time trying to figure this out on my own and looked at a whole bunch of the threads and forums on here to help figure out my issue, but alas I can't. I know that people have expressed an issue with this before, but After Effects was working fine for me until a couple days ago and this was the first time I saw this message
    Before I begin.
I am working with Adobe CS5 Suite, so any and all other programs (premiere, media encoder) are saying that .mov (quicktime) files are not supported and they failed to import.
I am working on a windows 7 PC
    64-bit operating system
This is the warning that pops up when I first open After effects.
I didn't understand this warning because I have QuickTime and it works fine.
I still wanted to check to see if I was able to import the file.
Even still, I tried importing a different file and the same message popped up.
I know that these files work. I have played them through QuickTime and tested them and they are not damaged. and the 01.mov file has been imported into after effects and premiere before, which was why I wanted to test this file as well.
And here is a shot that shows taht the file is playing, and that in the upper left you see the quicktime icon.
I changed my administrator permission for quicktime, thinking I didn't have permission anymore for some reason. re-installed QuickTime (now having the most up-to-date version) and the same message keeps popping up.
My QuickTime component folder was empty when I went to look at it. I remember reading elsewhere that maybe I needed to remove the components and see which one was the issue, but there is nothing in there.
I am unaware if there are any third party plug ins that could be causing this issue?
I also wasn't able to figure out how to allow communication with After Effects and QuickTime through the firewall software that I have
Maybe that would be the issue? I don't even know if they are or aren't communicating between themselves already or not.
What confuses me is that bringing in a .mov file was never an issue before. and then these error messages started to happen.
Here is another error message I was getting when working with Media Encoder. I tried bringing in the same file as above to see if I couldn't convert it.
This was the error message that I received.
I guess I'm asking if anyone else is still having this issue with .mov files trtying to be imported into After Effects, Premiere, and Media Encoder. And if so, how did you fix your issues?
Thank you for any input that you guys may have to help me fix this.
    - Steve

    Hey Todd
Thank you for your input and help.
First, I do not have any issues anymore with my dynamic link and being able to export projects or convert file formats anymore. I do not know why I was unable to do so before, but i recently was able to connect and export 3 separate different projects since the post I added about a month ago. One of them being the project I am currently working on that I posted the QuickTime question about.
I also went to check for software updates under the Help drop down menu in After Effects and it said that all the software was up-to-date. (I have version 10.0.2 - maybe there is an update that my software isn't recognizing that I would need to install that could fix the issue?)
I can give more details that were listed in the "information I should provide.." link that you sent over.
I am running After Effects with the Creative Suite CS5.0 and the version of After Effects I have is 10.0.2
I also have an external Matrox Max for uploading some content onto my computer.
My desktop is a Windows 7 as previously stated.
    12 GB RAM
    64-bit operating system
    Intel Core i7 CPU Processor x980 @ 3.33GHz
And the QuickTime that i have is 7.75.80.95
Maybe If I can't get a new software update for AE (if my AE is not up to date), I could try installing an older version of QuickTime? Maybe that would solve the issue?
I just tried deleting that folder from "AppData>Roaming>Adobe>After Effects>10.0" rebooted after effects and the computer, and that didn't work.

  • Quicktime Codecs/Compressors and After Effects?

    Hi,
    I have AE CS4, updated.Win XP SP 3 and 560ti Nvidia.
I have a few questions regarding quicktime and after effects.
I mostly render using quicktime and photo-jpeg as the compressor. But in the timelapse I shot, it is not giving me precise colors and the final movie is low on contrast.
I tried animation codec, awesome but file size too large.I am rendering for stock footage where 1GB is maximum file size limit.
    My questions:
1 - Will updating Quicktime update the compressor menu list under quicktime format in after effects render settings? Will updating also add new compressors, if any?
2 - Where does quicktime store encoders/compressors if installed on C drive?
3 - I saw many recommending DNxHD codec.I downloaded it.What next?Is it a quicktime compressor, i.e. to be used with quicktime as we use h.264, animation and photo-jpeg?
4 - How do I add DNxHD codec to After Effects for use in renders?
5 - Could you recommend the best lossless quicktime compressor which gives not so big file size as animation does?
Currently I see 11 compressors in format options under quicktime. Are there more?I have the latest k-lite codec pack installed if that matters.
    Thank you.
Would be greatful if you can explain, it will help me get clear on this.
Thank you.And sorry if it is a very basic question.

    Hi, thanks for the replies.
It is a timelapse footage and not animation file.I meant animation codec under quicktime format gives me the best results.I tried h.264 and photo-jpeg, but the final video looks flat and low on contrast.I have done some color grading and only animation and png renders it correctly.
But the problem is that the file size is pretty huge.I also see banding in photo-jpeg and h.264 renders.
I want to upload the timelapse to pond5 for sale. But photo-jpeg just gives me flat colors and flat contrast.
Can you suggest a compression that maintains colors plus gives a size under 1GB?
    Photo-Jpeg render frame:
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/1%20Photo%20-%20Jpeg.JPG
    Animation render frame:
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/2%20Animation.JPG
You can see how flat photo-jpeg looks. Also hasn't rendered the colors and contrast properly.
Along with this, can you help me install DNxHD codec?I downloaded it and it has 2 folders, Source and TestFrames. What next?

  • Maintaining Photoshop aspect ratios in After Effects

    Hi there,
    I'm new to  adobe programs...
I'm having a problem when i try to import a 720 x 540 photoshop image into After Effect at the same ratio. After establishing the same settings, my image in AE is slightly cut off at the sides (along the width), as if pillarboxed just barely. There's an outline around the image that seems like it maybe be closer to the 720 X 540 aspect ration, but i don't know how to make the image fill it up.
    Any suggestions?

I your AE comp is 720 X 540 square pixels and your Photoshop file is 720 X 540 square pixels then the frame sizes match. If your AE comp is NOT square pixels or your Photoshop file was set to a non square pixel aspect ratio then AE will make the adjustments and you will see some distortion.
You need to learn about pixel aspect ratios and you need to make sure that the source footage is properly interpreted. 720 X 540 is the old standard for NTSC 4:3 square pixels and it will fit perfectly in a 720 X 486 rectangular pixel composition if you're using a pre CS version of AE. The new standard for NTSC square pixels with a 4:3 picture ratio is 720 X 534. This will translate perfectly into a 720 X 486 frame. Unfortunately DV video and most DVD formats are limited to 720 X 480 so 6 scan lines are lost. The playback device strips them off anyway so there not really missed.
To make your life easier just always plan on using the standard presets for your compositions and make all of your artwork square pixels. AE will properly interpret any DV footage you may import and will maintain a completely distortion free workflow. You can then use the Adobe Media encoder to render your deliverable DV or DVD product.
I hope this clears things up a bit. Pixel aspect ratios confuse everyone at first.

  • QuickTime Files rendered from After Effects won't open

I currently have QuickTime version 7.6. Files that I download from elsewhere or that I view in the FireFox plugin online play just fine. However, files rendered from After Effects CS3 (I prefer MPEG-4 codec, but I just tried and Sorenson 3 won't do it either) will not play in FireFox's plugin and they won't open QuickTime when I double-click them in Explorer. They will only open in the QT player if I already have the player open. Otherwise, I have to open them in VLC. I much prefer the QT player and I don't want to have to open it first to view my files. Any thoughts on what's going wrong here? This has only started in the past month or so.
Other people can view the files just fine, it's just my computer. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times now and have updated my video drivers, to no avail. I've also installed Avast! Antivirus and run a boot-time virus scan, but no lick there either.
    Error signature from Windows:
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.60.92.0
    P3 : 496279cc P4 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P5 : 7.60.92.0 P6 : 496279cc
    P7 : 0000130d P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

I wouldn't have a clue from here on, it could be anything. The key would be, if you could recall what changes were made to the computer during the time the problem surfaced. I'm not familiar with After Effects C3S but I'd disable it from loading at start-up if it does, and try QT again, but that's just a pure guess, based on the EventType error numbers, that are somewhat familiar with memory load

  • Aspect HD and After Effects CS3:

I get the following error in After Effects CS3:
After Effects error: Failed to build Graph
When I try to render a movie (from AECS3) to Cineform AVI format.
The movie has the following settings:
    1920 x 1080 (1.00)
    29.fps
    Millions of Colors+ (Straight)
    No Compression
I am following the tutorial here:
    http://supportcenteronline.com/ics/s...asp?deptID=614
Any ideas why I get this error?
    Thanks,
    Simon

No idea, but the message sounds like it is not able to calculate the data rate for the stream and thus cannot compress it. From what little source footage I have in CF CoDecs, I generally get the impression that it's all rather twitchy in combination with AE, so this may be more a matter of tweaking some settings in the CoDec which the CF people could tell you better than me, obviously.

  • Editing QuickTime Screen Recording in After Effects CS5

    Hi,
I'm doing a project that is based around using footage from Google street view. I've collected my footage at the highest quality setting using QuickTime screen recording and imported it into AfterEffects CS5. However, when I render my clip (only 20 seconds at this stage) even at Best Quality settings the quality was drastically reduced from looking almost HD to soft around the edges. Even selecting 'Lossless', which is less than ideal, was not much better.
    Would really appreciate some advice!!
    Thanks,
    Richard.

  • Aspect Ratio HDV clip from FCP to After Effects

Can someone help me with exporting from FCP an HDV clip to After Effects? What I am doing is trying to export an HDV clip from FCP to AE but when I import it into AE the aspect ratio is all off. I have an HDV 1080i50 easy setup timeline and I am exporting from that as a quicktime movie (not conversion) with the current settings. When I bring that into AE I have a HDV comp set up and I drop the FCP movie into that comp. My FCP movie is 1920 X 1080 and is bigger thant the AE HDV Comp. Why? Shouldn't the sizes be the same since they are HDV? Please help
    Tim

HDV is 1440 x 1080 native so if you have output from FCP that is 1920 x 1080 it is being misinterpreted by AFX.
Try creating a new comp in AFX using the HDV easy setup but set the frame size to 1920 x 1080 manually and see what that does.

  • After Effects, Final Cut Pro HD, and QuickTime 7

    Hello friends,
I just wanted to point out a problem I have experienced with QuickTime 7 when using After Effects and Final Cut Pro HD. If this has already been covered by someone else on the forum, please forgive my unnecessary post.
I am used to working in AE 6.5 and FCP 4.5 and exporting/importing QT files between the two programs.
After I downloaded QT 7 (Pro version) with iTunes 6, I discovered that when I export an AE 6.5 clip using the "Export-->QuickTime Movie" menu option, I cannot open the QT file in FCP 4.5. FCP 4.5 tells me that it does not recognize the file. (However, when I use AE's "Export-->DV Stream" option, FCP 4.5 will recognize the file, but it has to render the clip.)
I decided to reinstall QT 6.5.2 (Pro version), and after that everything worked fine (I re-exported the movie using AE's "QuickTime Movie" option, and I was able to open the file in FCP 4.5 with no problems).
Have any of you experienced this problem, or something similar? Do you suppose this is something Adobe might address with a software patch? Or Apple?
    Chris
P.S. I downloaded all of the QT 7 patches that Apple released, including the recent QT 7.0.4 and encountered the same problem with AE & FCP every time. This is a problem, of course, because if I choose to stick with QT 6, I will be unable to enjoy the new videos offered at the iTunes 6 store.

    Hi David,
Thank you for your reply. Honestly, I am really new to AE, so I am not very familiar with the render queue. When I had QuickTime 6, I would just use the "Export-->QuickTime Movie" menu and then open that file up in FCP. This was a fast and easy process for me. But now, after installing QT 7, I cannot do that, because FCP can no longer read the "QuickTime Movie" file I export from AE.
I will look up some more information on the AE render queue and try using that. Thank you for the tip.

  • Issues with Quicktime in Mavericks. I cant export to quicktime codecs in After Effects Or Premiere

    Hi,
I recently updated to OS Mavericks. And in the beginning I really liked the update, but I recently fired up my After Effects CC and Premiere CC to work on some animation videos I had to produce for client. And when I wanted to export my animation. I could not find my Quicktime Codec settings like. H264, Mp4, Apple Pro res or any other quicktime codec. I read some articles on issues with Mavericks/Qucktime and this export problem in After Effects and Premiere. But I could not find a solution. It used to work on 10.8.5!
I tried this... But it did not work ;-(
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/08/solutions-for-problems-with-quicktim e-files-in-after-effects-cc-12-0-because-of-conflict-with-dvcprohdvideoout-quick time-component.html
I tried to uninstall perian. But did not help at all. They even discontinued the product.
Does anyone else stumbled on this problem? Or maybe has a solution? I thought of downgrading to 10.8.5 But that is not ideal because I don't have a Time machine Backup from that period or earlier. And otherwise I have to collect all my data, emails, pictures etc. I seriously could use some help!

After uninstalling and reinstalling the entire Adobe CC suite and all QuickTime components I was still dead in the water. I then tried another User account on my computer and AE and AME worked perfectly with fast startup and all QT/H.264 components in place. This established the problem was in my main User directory...
After some backing up, I deleted all Adobe and com.Adobe.whatever files from User/Library/Preferences and then restarted the computer. I then copied all Adobe and com.Adobe.whatever files from the other user folder and restarted and found that After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder were working perfectly:

  • Alpha Channel Problem from After Effects into FCP

    Hello
Using After Effects I've masked out a figure in some footage so I can composite it into a timeline. When I import the new .mov I render out (using RGB + Alpha channels and Millions of Colours +) into FCP the figure is surrounded by a solid black background.
I've repeated the process a few times and then tried importing the .mov into FCP on another computer. This actually worked, the channel became transparent and the mask was there. So this should mean there's something wrong with my version of FCP?
I'm using After Effects 6.5 and FCP 5.0.1 on my Mac and FCP Studio 2 on the computer it worked on.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wait a second, there was a huge thread here a few weeks ago about bad alphas. The victims eventually (IIRCC) were forced to do a complete reinstall of EVERYTHING Tiger/Leopard and FCS2. It was an ugly shouting match and reinstalling/reverting to an earlier version of QT did not solve it for them. Check the revs of software on the two machines and compare them carefully.
