75-minute film to DVD -- how?

Greetings. A simple question, I'm sure...
I've got a 75-minute film that I need to export to DVD. My elementary-school students and actors each need a copy; we'd also like a DVD to show the whole school on a big screen.
I've got...
... Final Cut Pro X
... Compressor 4
... iDVD
The "options" are overwhelming. My experiments have resulted in poor quality output.
Could someone suggest a straight-forward settings/methods for accomplishing this transfer, without loss of quality?
Many thanks!
Cat

Well, I still maintain that iDVD will do excellent quality DVDs - I've used it for years with excellent results when the physical disk is displayed on HDTVs, projectors, etc.  On the suggestion to use High Quality, my recollection is that High Quality equals one-pass constant bit rate. It can give excellent results, but if you have a lot of motion you might see some artifacting. And, it used to be limited to only 60 minutes of video on the disc - I assume that's still the case. Professional Quality encoding will almost always give better quality, and will fit more video on the disc.
I took a little time today to experiment with using Compressor instead of iDVD. I immediately ran into the fact that there are practically no options for making a professional-looking contents screen for your disc. I just don't know if I could live without all the polished iDVD themes available, unless I was just making a quick-and-dirty preview disc - but I never have a need to do that. I always make use of the "fancier DVD menu options."
In addition, I often create DVDs that are not just one video, but rather several shorter videos on one disc. I can't see a way to do that when authoring in Compressor. I even checked out a few web tutorials and the lynda.com training for Compressor. If it's possible to have multiple videos (not multiple chapters) on a disc created in Compressor, please tell me how.
So why not compress in Compressor and use those files in iDVD? As Tom said earlier, iDVD won't recognize them. I think they're meant to be used in DVD Studio Pro or some other higher end DVD authoring tool.
It may be possible that if you are creating a disc with only one video, can live with a contents screen that is bare bones (or nonexistent), and tweak the settings in Compressor to two-pass vbr and maximum data rate, you might get a DVD that is slightly better quality than iDVD can produce. However, I'm not yet convinced, so in the interest of open-mindedness I will be testing this when I get time this coming week. And, for my particular needs it's going to have to be noticeably better to offset the authoring and workflow restrictions it would impose.

  • Preparing my film for DVD - in quicktime?

I have down-converted my film from FCE to quicktime and when there is fast camera movement, lines appear around the subject
I have tried all the settings in quicktime conversion but none seem to improve the situation.
Im working in DV-Pal which was converted from HD.
Im converting using Quicktime conversion under the following settings:
    Compression: H.264
    Quality: High
    Key frame rate: 24
    Frame reordering: yes
    Encoding mode: multi-pass
    Dimansions:384x288
I have been told it may be interlacing, but I am wanting to produce my film onto DVDs - how can I do this in the best quality?
    thanks

You need to start by shooting in true 24fps or at least with a camera that shots 23.976fps. Or you need a very sophiticated software application like Compressor or I think Nattress' standards converter to convert your media to 24fps. Then you need FCP or an application that supports 24fps, and finally you need DVD Studio Pro to make a DVD in 24fps.

  • I am going to place a 30 minutes dvd film on a website for one of my clients. Before converting tje old vhs-film to dvd I must know what format will suit the needs best. HTTP, Flash, Quicktime or something else?

I am going to place a 30 minutes dvd film on a website for one of my clients. The film was shot 15 years ago and is in vhs-format. Before I will have the film converted into a dvd-format I want to know what format will suit my needs best. HTTP, Flash, Quicktime or something else? I will make it easy for myself placering the dvd film on the site and for the vistors who wish to look att the film.

The DVD format (MPEG-2) isn't appropriate for Web use.
Use QuickTime and H.264 video codec with AAC audio. Size the file at 320X240 (best fit for your old file).

  • My film has not totally downloaded, I did not realise this until it stopped 15 minutes before the end, how do I know when the rented film I have purchased has been fully downloaded. Can I retrieve anyhow

My film I rented has not fully downloaded I only realised that when it stopped 15 minutes before the end , how do I know when a film has been fully downloaded. Oi would not have thought the film would not have started unless the film was fully downloaded. The film warned me prior to tarting that I only had 48 hours to watch once starting!

I'm sorry but this is too funny to pass up.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

Have them install Quicktime on their PC's from Apple's website, that's the easiest fix.

  • Mountain Lion Recovery DVD - How can I make one, ML was installed on my iMac and BBP

Mountain Lion Recovery DVD - How can I make one, ML was installed on my iMac and MBP when I purchased them. When I look at the App Store, it dose not show ML as purchased (to download again) - do I have to purchase it again to make a Recovery DVD?

do i have to purchase it again to make a Recovery DVD?
No. You can still make a bootable recovery DVD, but you will not be able to make a full bootable copy of ML without purchase.
    1) Enable the debug menu for Disk Utility via Terminal Application. Navigate to terminal by typing "terminal" in   spotlight. Copy the bolded text below and enter it into the command prompt:
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool true ; open -a "Disk Utility" ; exit
    2) From the Debug Menu > Select Show every Partition > Recovery HD should appear
    3) Right click (control + click) the Recovery HD partition and select "Mount"
    4) Right click again the partition again > "Reveal Recovery HD in Finder". Leave this window open
    5) At this point, you will need open terminal again and enter the following command:
    sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg ; exit
         Type your password when prompted.
    6) Navigate back to the Recovery HD finder Window > com.apple.recovery.boot > BaseSystem.dmg
    7) Drag "BaseSystem.dmg" into Disk Utility's sidebar.
    8) Insert your DVD
    9) Select "BaseSystem.dmg" in the sidebar and hit "Burn"
Once the burn is completed, hold option down at startup and select the DVD to boot. This is a bootable Recovery partition, not a bootable copy of ML.
Note: to disable the debug menu,
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool false

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

My pavilion dv7-1232nr dvd rw drive doesn't recognize some dvds how can I fix this problem? I am running Win 7 home premium 64 bit.

If these are new original DVD, you should bring your system in for alignment. If they are copied DVDs, the drive that made them may be out of alignment and your good drive can't read the bad copy.  There is also another issue you may be talking about. Many DVD movies are assigned a country code and will not run on a machine from another country.  This was intended to prevent piracy.
