750 GB Seagate Drives not shown on Xserve

Hi there,
i installed new Seagate ST3750640A Version 3.AAE Drives on a Xserve RAID to increase Capacity. It's an Xserve RAID from 2003.
I created a Array with 2 Discs as a RAID 0 to test the whole thing.
The Drives are shown in RAID-Admin and ich have the latest firmware installed which comess with the 1.5.1 Raid Admin.
I'M using a Fibre-Channel Card.
Serve is a Xserve G4 running 10.4.9 Server.
o here is my Problem after i created the Array i can't do anything with the Array on the Server. It's not shown in Disc-Utility. I rebooted the Server changed the Fibre-Channel Cable. Tried it on a other Server. Nothing.
In System-Profiler i can see that under Fibre-Channel that there is the Xsere RAID attached. But i can't see the Array to format it in HFS or else.
I tried it on both sides of the RAID.
MY old Hitachi Deskstar 180 Drives which come direct from Apple are working.
Anyone else having this sympton.
Thanks in advance.
Clemens

Ebay is an excellent place to find empty ADMs
We recently bought three, added them to a 4x250 array, took out the 250's (and have them as spares for our other 5 raids with 250's), and put in 7 750 seagates. Worked beautifully. Our 250's are starting to drop like flies now that it's been 3+ yrs.
Expect to pay 150-200 each for empties.

  • Seagate drives not compatible with Time Machine causing OS lag/hangs?

    Setup-

    Mac OS X 10.5.1
Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB External Drive
    Reproducible Issues
MacOS X lags at start up with the Seagate drive connected via Firewire and Time Machine enabled.
MacOS X hangs at shutdown with the Seagate drive connected via Firewire and Time Machine enabled. The only way to turn off the iMac is to hold the power button down.
I have contacted both Apple Support and Seagate Support. The outcome with Apple resulted in finding no issues with my iMac. The same can not be said of my 35 minute call with Seagate this morning.
The Seagate rep took me through basic troubleshooting steps and then proclaimed that it was Apple's issue and that Apple had issued a patch for this problem. However, the rep was unable to even provide the name of the patch. The problem with this declaration was the fact that it was based on disabling Time Machine and restarting the iMac once. On the second, fifth and seventh reboot after getting off the phone, the iMac hung on shutdown and lagged on reboot.
To add insult to injury the Seagate rep told me not to use the touch sensitive power button on the Seagate drive, since "it doesn't always work properly." Quoted word for word.
A co-worker of mine uses Time Machine with a LaCie drive on his PowerMac G5 and has had zero issues from day one. At this point in time I'm probably going to wipe the drive and return it to Costco unless someone can suggest an alternative.

    Hmmm...bought at costco
I bet it is formated with the Master Boot Record Format. it will mount and OS X will read it, but Time Machine will not be able to use it.
You need to be in finder, under go menu, choose utilities. in folder that opens, double click disk utility. This will open a window that shows all your connected drives. Highlight the seagate drive ( the top choice, thats give the drives storage size). in the top group of buttons in the right side of the application window click the partition button. The Volume scheme will show current. Highlight this and choose 1. to the right of that is a place where you can name the drive. Use only normal letters and numbers here. On the bottom of that window, click the options button, and select GUID. click OK and give it a few minutes. close the disk utility application when it is finished
After it is formatted, the drive should show up on your desktop and Time machine should recognize it.

  • Initial impression of 7200rpm 100GB Seagate drive; not good

I installed the Seagate Momentus 100GB 7200rpm drive into my 1.83Ghz MacBook, which has 2GB of GigaRam RAM from NewEgg. My MacBook came with the 60GB 5400rpm FUJITSU MHV2060BHPL.
The first thing I noticed about the Seagate drive was how much vibration I was feeling in the areas to the left and right of the trackpad. With the Fujitsu you cannot even feel it spinning. The Seagate was annoying.
I decided to take it out and re-install the Fujitsu just to make certain my memory of that drive was not playing tricks on me. But before that, I decided to try a few simple tests of the Seagate that might tell me how fast it was in comparison the to pokey 5400 Fujitsu.
Using iMovie and the iSight camera I recorded a 3 minute clip of me sitting in front of the camera. I then exported this movie into a Quicktime broadband low movie. It took the 7200 Seagate 2 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the task.
Next I pulled in a previous podcast that was edited in GarageBand. It took the 7200 drive 28 seconds to send it to iTunes.
After re-installing the 60GB drive I knew my memory was good. You cannot even feel this drive spinning.
It took the 5400 drive 2 minutes and 7 seconds to convert the 3 minute I movie of me in front of the iSight into a Quicktime broadband low file. That could't be right, so I recorded it again and got the same results.
Next I pulled in the same podcast into GarageBand. It took the 5400 drive 24 seconds to send it to iTunes. By comparison my dual 1.85Ghz G5 takes between 12 and 13 seconds to send this podcast into iTunes.
Needless to say I'm sending this drive back and rethinking what to get instead. I'm pretty shocked by these simple little tests, which duplicates the kind of tasks I would perform on this MacBook.
Maybe I got a bad drive? I did have two kernel panics on the 7200 when trying to install OS X before my successful third attempt.
    As always, YMMV.
    Dual G5 tower ~ MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

When you install a new HD with a fresh install of Mac OS X you will be subject to Spotlight whirring away in background in order to build its data base holding file meta data. This could be part of your performancei ssue you raise.
Also, it could be that a new drive requires some sanity checking of all of its data space - again, this could interfer with your performance measurements.
The vibration issue is another thing altogether. Of course it's spinning faster than the stock 5400 rpm HD, but if it's balanced it should not cause vibration to the degree you've reported. Others here report no such vibration so it could be you have a bad HD and should have it replaced. Then check again for vibrartion. If vibration persists then it's a function of your install procedure or your MacBook construction. The HD in laptops typically have small rubber supports to reduce/eliminate vibrations - maybe one of those rubber bushings has become dislodged during replacing your HD.
Good luck and post back what happens next.

  • External USB Drive Not Shown in Finder... HELP!!!

After upgraded to the latest OS X Lion, external USB drives plugged to my macbook pro (named A) won't show anything. I've tried cmd+opt+r+p twice but no luck; however, i am able to see it in Disk Ultilities and Storage in About This Mac...
Another same macbook pro of mine (named B) did the upgrade and it is working just fine - external drive is shown as normal whenever plugged.
Help please because my daily work depends largely on document on external usb drive!!!???

I've surfed around already before having my problem posted here because it's so frustrated…
AnaMusic: I've tried that but it isn't worked
    Eric Ross: it's checked
LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
    Are there any ways around???

  • Hard drives not mounting on xserve

I have had this dilemna for quite some time on one computer, then yesterday I went to work on another computer with a different operating system and it had the same sympton.
Both of these computers after running for a time will not show that the hard drives mounted.
One of the computers is running Leopard on a 20"iMac with 2 GB of RAM. The other computer is an xserve running xserver software Tiger 10.4.11.
If I restart the computers, then the drives will mount. I can restart the computers if I have access through ARD, if not then I have to hard crash the computers. When running programs on these computers, File--> quit is not an option for any open software packages.
On the xserve, I have used permissions repair and this did not help.
Very puzzling and not sure why this has shown up on two different Mac OS's.
Has anyone else come across anything like this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi
On the 10.5 client select the Finder Menu, select Preferences. Where it says "Show these items on the Desktop" enable Connected Servers. If you're new to 10.5 this can catch you out and make it seem as if there is no connected share point.
If the option is enabled and you're still having the problem double-check network settings first. What you could try for both affected clients is create a new admin user. Log in with it and see if the problem goes away.
If it does then you know its at least one or more corrupted/damaged preference or .plist in the Users Home Library Preferences folder.

  • External seagate drive not showing

Hi. My 1TB seagate external drive has just suddenly started to not show up. The problems the same on my MBP and my old stalk imac. I've had this problem before with a la cie drive. Is there any way to recover the files at least? or better still repair the drive?
    Thanks
    Iz

    Hi lz,
    Run Repair Disk on it.
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane. If it does not show up, try unplugging it and plugging it back in. It may mount at some point.
    4. Click Repair Disk at bottom of main window.
    5. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior, or the directory could be damaged beyond repair, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).
If the HD won't mount at all, try a different cable and a different port. Sometimes the bridge circuit in an external enclosure can die, so I would also try the HD in a different enclosure and try a different HD in that enclosure. That should tell you if it's the HD or the enclosure.

  • Seagate drive not mounting or showing up in disk utility

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 Gbytes that I took out of its external casing because it was not mounting.
i assumed the sata to usb converter in the case was bad.
I took it out and put it in one of the drive bays on my MacPro 3,1 2008 and started my computer up.
my computer was beeping about once a second while it was in apple's version of a bios boot.
when i start it up the disk does not show up in finder so i go to the disk utility and the disk does not show up their either.
so i open my computer and touch the outside of the drive and its spinning just fine, it doesn't feel shaky or sound bad.
Any ideas to get my drive working?

I've pulled three Seagate Barracuda HD's from their external cases (GoFlex) for use either in drive bays or better external enclosures and all worked. However, there's a hidden Master Boot Record (MBR) in the first partition even when the GoFlex has been formatted for use attached to a Mac and the entire drive has to be reformatted with a GUID partition table for it to be usable.
In Disk Utility, is there even a Media line for the Seagate? If so, that's what needs to be partitioned. If not, do you have the Debug Menu enabled in DU? If not, enable it and see if that helps.
I had pulled the Barracudas out of their enclosures because there was no ventilation and they were overheating (Tech Support denied that but the SMART record showed they were). It's possible that yours was cooking for so long that it is now indeed fried, which would explain why it didn't work in its original enclosure any more either.

  • Replacement hard drive not shown in Disk Utility

So I just finished installing a replacement hard drive for my PB 12". I got a Seagate 2.5" ATA Momentus 5400 etc as per my previous thread. But after firing it up from the install disk, the new volume fails to show up. Anyone else had this problem? And fixed it? Opening up the case again now...

Don't know if your problem solved. Had the same thing happen to me. Was told that new HD was bad (unlikely), Logic board was bad (disaster). Then finally was tole by another tech (OWC) that it sounded like a bad cable connection. Took it apart again and reseated both ends of HD cable a couple of times. Started up and the HD recognized by disk utility. Works great since. Hope your problem as simple as mine.

  • Flash drive not shown in File Explorer

I have plugged in my flash drive into three different usb drive ports (one at a time) and no luck on opening documents on it. Its icon shows on the bottom bar of the desktop, however it is unable to access.
I have restarted my computer to see if it will open in the file explorer folder, but it did not.
I do not know why my Toshiba laptop is unable to read my flash drive when I regularly use it on here for school. Are there any helpful hints to resolve this issue? I would appreciate the help.

    Strange! ?:|
What happens if you try to disconnect the external USB HDD and connect it again????
Do you see the little icon in the task bar that the USB device was connected???
    One hint:
    - Leave the USB HDD connected to the notebook
    - Shut down the notebook
    - Restart the notebook
    - Login into Vista
    - Check if the USB HDD was recognized again!
    Good luck

  • File Sharing - Drives not shown

I have six Macs on a network with DSL Modem and a separate router. (this is irrelevant)
One of the Macs (G3) is a server. (still irrelevant)
I have always used "personal File sharing" on the G3 to allow my other Macs to access it. I turn on AFP on the G3 and GO>Connect to Server from my G4 MDD.
Up pops the user name and password (everything ok to here)
In that list usually shows something like this:
    Macintosh HD G3
    Macintosh HD2 G3
    johnsmith
    davesmith
    janesmith
Notice it will share the Hard drives on the G3 AND the User Folders.
Now I just recently get only this:
    johnsmith
    davesmith
    janesmith
    No hard drives!
Does anyone know what could be wrong? I can share from other Macs on the network as outlined above and their drives show in the list. Also remember, this G3 server has always allowed me to connect to the drives. Now they are just not there. I have trashed the preference file com.apple.systempreferences.plist etc. No luck. I have rebuilt permissions. No Luck. I have got info on the disks to see if they have their permissions correct. No luck.
    Anyone have any ideas.
    Thanks.

  • CD/DVD Drive Not shown in Device Manager or Bios

I have a Satellite A215 series laptop and have found that my CD/DVD drive is missing from my computer and device manager.  It will not read discs, but powers up, seems to run, tray opens/closes, amber light flashes, etc.  It also powers up and spins during boot, but will not read the recovery disc.  It appears to also be missing in the Bios.  I have replaced the drive with another and have the same problem.  I have also tested my original drive in another laptop and it works.  I have tried removing upper and lower filters in the registry with no success.  Restore also did nothing.  I found this problem after recently adding a new Canon printer and software.  The drive worked flawlessly at that time.  Can anyone please shed light on this problem?  Any help is greatly appreciated!

please provide your full model number.  it is printed on the bottom of computer.
you should restore to out-of-box state.  you can order the disks from toshiba if you did not create them when your computer was working.  This installs the OS as well as the necessary toshiba drivers.

  • MPG video files on a flash drive not shown!

I have a flash drive with videos (.mpg) with format FAT32. When I connect this flash drive to my macbook pro (OSX) it displays on the desktop. However, the videos fail to display when I explore the flash drive. What to do?
    Folder Architechture:
Flash Drive -> Folder -> Videos

The Apple info on iPhoto is applicable to your situation:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Basically, move your flash files to your desktop, and convert the original flash drive from FAT32 to MacO S X Extended. Move the converted files to the flash device - and it should work fine.

  • N95 8GB - drive not shown in explorer

I recently replaced my troublesome N95 with an 8GB version. (nicer screen, less crashing, faster nav :-) )
when I installed the latest version of pc suite v1.6.80.0 it no longer shows the n95 drive in windows explorer. I used to be able to copy files to/from the old version.
    Am I missing something?
    thanks

I don't know about the Nseries PC Suite, but the "regular" PC Suite is v6.85.something and you can get it from: http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite
I use it with my N95 8GB (never tried the Nseries PC Suite versions).

  • Seagate Hard Drives not detected by the Windows 7 installer

I've spent hours on this trying every conceivable reason, so I apologize in advance for the length on this post.
I connected a Seagate 320GB 7200.10 hard drive to a P35 chipset system and attempted to install Windows 7 RTM onto it. The installer got to the part of detecting hard drives, but could not detect this drive. Native SATA mode was enabled, and AHCI was enabled.
I disabled Native SATA mode, then after that failed I also tried disabling AHCI by setting the controller to IDE mode. Still, the Windows 7 installer refused to detect the drive.
I replaced both the SATA & power cables, verified the drives are detected by the AHCI firmware and the BIOS, and I even tried different motherboard SATA ports to no effect. I took a second , identical Seagate 320GB SATA hard drive, this time pre-formatted it inside Windows 7 RC using NTFS defaults, and again (with and without AHCI and Native SATA mode) Windows 7 will not see this hard drive either!
I even downloaded the AHCI preinstall drivers and loaded these using a flash drive. When I did Windows 7 would autodetect the ICH9 driver and I would click Next. Windows 7 would suddenly see the drive, but all options to format or create a partition are grayed out. Clicking the more info button gives me this error message:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
I used the AHCI preinstall drivers specific for the motherboard (Vista 64)  and I also tried the AHCI preinstall drivers from Intel for Windows 7 RC 64. As of this writing Intel has not released official Windows 7 RTM Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers.
In frustration I installed a SSD (with AHCI and Native SATA mode enabled) and suddenly Windows 7 detects the SSD without needing to load any driver (as would be expected, since Vista and 7 include Intel Storage Manager drivers by default already). I installed Windows 7 RTM 64bit onto the SSD without issue.
15 minutes later I was at the Windows 7 desktop, and Windows 7 was showing the Seagate 320GB hard drive under "My Computer" as normal. I could even use the Seagate hard drive as normal as if nothing was wrong. For kicks I launched the Windows 7 installer inside Windows 7, but as you can see below it still refused to see the drive, despite the drive being shown under My Computer:
    (Since I can't use thumbnails, here's the direct link: http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n129/Chanur64/Box/Howpossible.jpg )
Also I should note I previously had Windows 7 Beta installed on an IDE drive in this exact system, and had no problems with it. Windows 7 RTM would allow me to install to an IDE drive and allowed me to install to an SSD, but it cannot see and cannot install onto both Seagate 320GB hard drives. These Seagates are known good drives previously part of a RAID 5 array.
If anyone knows what is going on or has some ideas I've not tried I would love to hear from you and get this figured out. Suffice to say this is not a promising start for Windows 7.
    Intel Q6600
    Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4 (ICH9R southbridge)
    4GB DDR2-800
    2x Seagate 320GB SATA 7200.10
    Intel X25-M 80GB
    8800GTS 320mb
PC Power & Cooling 750w PSU

I just had to solve the same issue with a Seagate Momentus Thin hard drive (
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/slim-laptop-hard-drives/)
Tried several BIOS configuration, AHCI drivers, etc and Windows 7 32bits couldn't detect the drive.
My solution was to boot with a USB pendrive with HirenCD tools (http://www.hiren.info/) and use a partition manager to erase disk contents, create and format a partition.
Windows 7 detected the hard drive for the first time and now is installing, so.. crossing fingers.
    Thanks,
    Diego
    Diego,
Thanks for the information and the link to Hiren.info!  I'm creating my bootable flash drive now.  I'll report back if I get this to work.
I had this same issue on a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 "laptop" hard drive.  I say "lap top" in quotes because it's actually in a desktop (HP Compaq Ultra-slim dc7800).  I believe it was an upgrade, so it took me a while to figure out what I was dealing
with until I finally took out the harddrive and checked what company made it!
    Thanks everyone!

  • XServe and 3rd Party Seagate drives

I have an XServe Intel 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual-Core Xeon server. It has 10.6.3 Server OS. I have used Seagate HD's in the unit for the last 4 years with no problems.
One of the HD's in the Mirrored Data RAID failed. When I purchased a new Seagate drive on inserted it in the XServe, the XServe did not recognise the drive in Dusk Utility, and the light on the drive bay was amber. I tried restarting the XServe, the lights would all go green on the drive bays, but then would not boot into the OS. Even when I boot up into the Server OS disc, and then go into Disk Utility it cannot see the drive.
I have tested all the drive bay modules and they are all working fine. It as if the new Seagate drive is not recognised by the XServe. What could have possibly changed. Is it a ADM firmware issue? Is there anyway to change this?
I know the right answer is probably to buy an Apple Server drive, but they are just so pricey here in South Africa. The Seagate drives I am buying here are equivalent to $100, where as the Apple drives from the Apple supplier are about $600.

You may want to try and fromat the drive exactly the same size as the old apple ones.
Check this site as he states :
The new non-Apple drive MUST have at LEAST as much storage capacity as the Apple drive you are replacing. I know - this sounds obvious at first, but it is NOT. For example, if you are replacing an Apple 500GB drive with a Western Digital 500GB, the ACTUAL formatted capacity of the WD drive MUST BE EQUAL TO OR MORE than the Apple drive. I have had instances where the new non-Apple drive formatted at a capacity that was only a few k less than the Apple drive and it would NOT work. Not all 500GB drives format at the exact same capacity. For example, my Apple 500GB had a formatted capacity of 465.76GB but the WD only had something like 465.72GB - this small difference was enough to cause the XServe RAID to reject the WD drive as a replacement in the existing RAID Array.
