750GB Seagate External Drive - Disk Insertion error

I have two 750 GB Seagate External hard drives, which are daisy chained to my PowerMac G5. I was transfering files between external hard drives, when all of a sudden the computer crashed. Once I restarted, the computer gave a disk insertion error:
Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
The options are: "Initialize..." "Ignore" and "Eject"
One of the external hard drives is fine, the one which was directly hooked up to the computer. However, the drive that was daisy chained still gives this error. I have tried connecting the drive to another mac, but it still gave this error. I also tried connecting it to a PC, and it was detected, but it did not show up under "My Computer."
Is there a way that I could save or re-format the hard drive WITHOUT loosing the data?
Please let me know. This is very urgent. I have a lot of important data on the hard drive. Any help/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hello! Sometimes a large file transfer will lock or crash a computer. With a crash or hard restart the disk's directory is damaged and if disk utility can't repair it then DISKWARRIOR is about the only utility that can fix the problem. The data usually isn't gone. The disk's directory (road map) of where every piece of info is located on the drive has become corrupt hence there's nothing for it to find. Diskwarrior is the best utility for repairing the directory. Regular use of DW will prevent "most" disk problems as it's the directory that gets messed up rather than a physical problem with the disk in most cases. In cases where DW can't fix the problem DataRescue II can sometimes recover valuable data. Tom

  • LR 4.4 import Error on Seagate External drive

    Hi,
I have a Seagate external drive and get an import error wen i try to import images from a memory card.  I always import to a new sub directory on the drive.  The directory gets created properly and I can see the files get coppied to a temp directory in the directory I specified.  The files then get removed and the temp directory is deleted but nothing shows up in the primary directory.
I have verified I can import to other external drive, the other two are WD.  I can also import to the internal drive.
I have a macbook pro, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.
    Thx

    Let me explain.
I am trying to import into a directory called test.
The external drive is named Seagate2012, the directory structure is as
    follows
    /photography
      /birds
    /test
Once the import starts, importing one file, a directory is created called
"Temporary Folder 76A8D1AF-C60F-4278-95DB-86A0F1BC0B7E" in the test
directory and the image is copied from he memory card into that directory.
The import takes almost one minute, much longer than normal.  After a minute
the file in the temp directory is removed and the temp directory is removed
but there is no image file in the test directory.
I then get a popup titled "Some Import operations were not performed" with
    the following information;
Could not copy a file to the requested location. (1)
        IMG_2595.CR2
The drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex  500GB.
This is the first time I have tried to import to tis drive.

  • Need help with Mac & PC not recognizing external drive (disk not readable)

I am having trouble getting my computer(s) to recognize my Seagate External Drive.
Have tried on my MacBook, iMac, 2 Mini's & my roommate's PC and all reveal the same issue: The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
MacBook/iMac both are working off of Leopard
    Both Mini's are on Tiger
It won't show up in finder, rendering it unobtainable. I need to get the information if at all possible off of this hard drive (very important!!) so any help I can get would be greatly appreciated!
It allows me to go into disk utility where it shows up with this information:

    Disk Identifier : disk4

And it is in the "about this mac" section with this information:

    Additional info:
on the disk4s1 info in disk utility, this information is seen:

so it looks like a whole lot of no's that need to be turned around! I can't understand why it won't be read by either Mac or PC with all of this, or how I can fix it

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • How do I resolve a disk Insertion error?

    Hello and thank you,
I recently upgraded my G4 to The tiger OS. All went smooth during the upgrade but, when the computer restarted both of my 17.1 gb quantum Atlas hard drives went missing and I received two disk insertion errors. I selected initialize but was unable to select any options in the disk utilities. Both hard drives still appear.
I decided to restarted my computer but this time my mac froze on the gray screen and told me to restart once more. I shut it down unplugged all cables and disconnected the hard drives thinking these where the problem and powered up. I saw a file folder with a question mark then it operated as normal.
After some experimenting I've deduced that when both hard drives are connected the G4 will freeze at the gray screen 75% of the time. If both Hard drives are not connected the machine will run fine with the exception of showing the question mark file.
Is there a way to have my mac recognize the two hard drives or is tiger not compatible with these hard drives?

To cure the question mark at startup problem...
System Preferences>Startup Disk, then select your boot drive.
What kind of cases are these drives in? FW, USB, Internal, Other?

  • My mac mini won't back up to my Seagate external drive but can read the information on it. Can i back up to it at all?

My mac mini won't back up to my Seagate external drive but can read the information on it.
Can i back up to it at all? and how do i do it?
    Simon

I suspect the Seagate is not formatted to be used with the Mac. The correct format would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled), if you just bought the EHD then almost certainly it's formatted to be used with MS Windows machines. This is easy to fix, here are instructions on how to format it:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After formatting Time Machine http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 will launch and will begin backing up. The first backup will take some time however after the first backup it will go pretty quickly.
NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After formatting all data will be erased, so please if you have data on that move it to the internal HD first and then format. Then once you have backed up you will have a backup copy of the data. Also NEVER EVER use a backup disk to be used to store data. The reason being is if that drive crashes you have not only lost the data you have lost it's backup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • G5 comes up with Disk Insertion Error

My G5 will mount CDs and software DVDs without a problem but now when I insert a film DVD I get the 'Disk Insertion Error' and the disk won't mount. The disk appears when I run the Disk Utility but I can't do anything with it.
    Help!!!!!

    HI Tom,
The error message that you are receiving indicate that your notebook is attempting to boot from the LAN connection rather than from its own hard drive or CD-ROM. I suggest you check that the boot sequence is correctly specified in your BIOS, or alternatively press F12 during your power on and you should get the boot device sequence menu appear so that you can specify that you want to boot from your hard drive.
    regards,

cant seem to get a seagate external drive to show up in finder when on the airport extreme base station. ver 7.5 using 10.6.2 any special setting to show it up in finder?

I tested a FAT 32 drive and it will show up.
Open your Hard Drive and look for your AirPort Extreme under the SHARED heading
Click the AirPort Extreme icon and then click Connect As at the upper right of the window
    Your drive should appear
If not, click anywhere on your open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
Click Finder, then click Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "Show these items on the desktop", make sure there is a check mark next to "Connected Servers"

  • My macbookpro (2.4 GHZ Intel Core i5, DDR3, OSX 10.9.4), stopped recognizing my Seagate external drive out of the blue. Help!

    Hello,
I accidentally unplugged my 2TB Seagate external drive, and when I pugged it back on, my Mac was still recognizing it, however, when I tried to access its contents, the folders appeared empty, so I tried to eject the drive, but the icon on the desktop was gone, I unplugged it, restarted my Mac, and it did not recognize the external drive. Then I repeated the stunt at lest three times. I thought the drive was ruined, so I got a laptop that runs Ubuntu, and Ubuntu recognizes and displays the contents correctly, which makes me think the external drive is fine. Any ideas on what to do? I mean my Mac won't even acknowledge the drive at all, otherwise I would think about re-formatting. Any ideas, I'd much appreciate it. Thank you.

  • HT201269 How do I transfer a movie from an iPad mini to a Seagate external drive?

How do I transfer a movie from an iPad mini to a Seagate external drive?  Movie is now in iTunes store.  Purchased a new Seagate external drive fo xmas and is recognized by the iPad mini.  Tried by moving a small video and worked.  Now I would like to move two movies that are in iTunes store that were purchased to the external drive to free up space and be able to watch in potential upcoming new Apple Air.  Have checked several pages on-line and having no success finding the information to enable me to do this.  Some some information about moving the movie to iCloud, but did not seem to work.

You don't need to do this.
Any purchases you make from the iTunes store are yours for download anytime on any device with your Apple ID used to purchase that media.  It could also be streamed from the cloud.
Just delete the movies from the iPad if you need the space.
When you get a new iPad, open the iTunes store, go to purchases, and sign in.  Then you can download anything you bought with your ID in the past - Free, you already own it.

  • Seagate External Drive Will It Work?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if a PowerBook G4 15" aluminium will work with a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive?
I'm concerned that there will be a problem with the USB 2.0 compatibility.
I am also taking the leap by upgrading my memory to 1 GB and installing OSX Leopard. Not Snow Leopard, just the regular one.
Any and all recommendations are welcome.
    Thank you,
    John Flood

    Thank you for your reply.
    I need a clarification.
Regarding the USB 1.0 versus USB 2.0...
The Seagate external drive I have has two USB plugs that plug into the two USB slots on my Powerbook. This apparently provides enough power to the drive and I have never had a problem. If I don't need to boot off of it, I still wonder if the new Seagate external drives USB 2.0 will work with my Mac. If you can, please clarify.
Regarding my plan to upgrade from OS X 10.3.x...
I bought a full edition of Leopard on DVD. Will this be enough?
    Many thanks again,

  • How to recover files off unmountable seagate external drive

I have been using a Seagate Backup Plus external drive for several months on my iMac destop. The external drive runs off of USB no other power source. I unmounted it the other day to use on my mac power pc and transferred mp4 files onto drive without problems. Unmounted drive and plugged it back to iMac and I am getting prompt The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer  choices of initialize, ignore, eject buttons. I have shut down and plugged it back in and reset the PRAM. I can see the unmounted device in disk utility and also I can see that it's plugged into the USB port. I have tried plugging the device into the mac power pc, macbook and pc all but pc give me the same response. On the PC I can't see the drive at all, though it has power and can be ejected. I would like to find out how to mount this drive to retrieve the files off of it. I am also wondering what to do with this drive, ie.e reformat it (if and when I retrieve files) or try to return it (bought it in Sept. 2012). Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated!
