785GM-E65, 4 DIMM's

Just read the stickies concerning memory.  A little background 1st.
Got this mobo with a used system, came with PSD34G1333K, 2 x 2gb Patriot pc1333.  Worked fine.
Went to Fry's and got 2 x 2gb of TW3X4G1333C9A, Corsair pc1333.  Staff said it should work ok.
Plugged it in the 2 open slots, no post.  Corsairs by themselves with Patriot's removed, no post.  Patriots alone, got in bios & relaxed the timings to 9-9-9-24 2T.  Took out Patriots, Corsairs back in, now it posts.
Now, I'm at the point where I can mix and match the ram in any spots, but I have to leave one empty for it to post.  I was like until I searched this forum.  I lowered the fsb from 1333 to 1066 to 800, same thing, can only use 3 dimm slots.
Is there anything else I can try?  If I return the memory and get one 4gb stick, would that work?  2gb sticks in 2 slots, 1 4b stick in 3rd slot, 4th slot empty for 8gb total?  3 sticks work for 6gb, so I'm thinking this might work?
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

A bit off: Does anyone know why they call it IDE mode? Whether a hard disk uses "AHCI" or "IDE" mode it is still usually an IDE sized disk.
Sorry Fred, it's actual a reffering to the circuitboard on the drive, nothing more.
In the old days they used to have "smart" controllers and dumb drives.
Now they have dumb controllers and "smart" drives, as such they moved the electronics to the drive.
The protocol the drive uses is ATA or AHCI, funny is that RAID isn't a protocol for the drive to use

    Actually it concerns the Voltages.
When I installed this CPU in this board everything was AUTO, in Windows the Voltage read 1.4v.
This 955 Black Editions has Stock Voltages of
    CPU VDD 1.35v
    CPU-NB VDD 1.25v
    HT Link 1.2v.
However because the BIOS does not output all these voltages in the Right Column as to what they are set to reflecting realtime measures, one has to 'boot' into Window to look at the readout.
BIOS Terminology is my main concern so I can set them appropriately to 'stock' first then raise them.
It seems with this board because it has the several different methods to OC that some voltages cannot be adjusted properly so they are already preset to certain stable measures pre-thinking someone will OC.
This not good.  Since if the Processor for the CPU VDDC voltage is set high the VCORE get hot quick.
So, I'm asking for the correct stock voltages for the above for this 955 Black Edition CPU RB-C3 125w/TDP
on this MSI 785GM-E65 Board.  Don't care about OC at the moment.
I need to know from MSI what the stock voltages are for Each Option.
Lastly, the NB Chipset voltage is set at 1.3v from the Factory along with the HT Link.  When I lower the HT to 1.2 the SB voltage activates and these two move in unison. Which is very uncool and odd.

  • Help please - 785GM-E65 return from RMA but still KO..

    HI,
my 785gm-e65 was broken after the m-flash use.
    no POST at all.
RAM, 1 month then came back this morning.
i put the sempron with its rad, the ddr3 and the power switch, then the VGA plug, and ....
    no POST ...
clearing CMOS without power plug did not help.
so my question is, may be its not my mobo, but to debug, i need to know what are the minimal things to POST.
should i have POST without CPU and RAM, only keyboard and VGA plugged ?
    i tried this and nothing..
HELP me solving this problem, before calling again the seller..
    [comment removed]

    ok, that's what i thought :
    CPU+RAM+IGP+power on mobo+power switch
    specs:
    sempron140
    DDR3 noname
    antec NSK1480 with PSU
the thing is that everything was working before M-flash, and after that i RMA my mobo
it's coming back and they told it's fully functional...
but still not working, so it's hard to believe that my CPU or RAM is defective, because they were working without trouble..

  • Slow Upgrade to 785GM-E65

    Hi,
I am interested in migrating my current HTPC (Asus M2A-VM HDMI) to the 785GM-E65 motherboard. I want to take advantage of some existing components however, as I don't want to absorb the expense all at once. I've read various online reviews and have gotten some conflicting data. My questions:
Is this mobo compatible with AM2+ CPUs? I want to use a Phenom X4 9750 for now, and move to an Athlon II X3/4 at a later time
Can I use DDR2 800Mhz memory with this unit? Again, with this notion of moving to DDR3 in the future.
    Thanks!

No, the board only takes AM3 CPU and DDR3 memory.
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1864
To reuse parts you need to take an AM2+ (AM3 ready) board with DDR2 slots.
Then you cvan use AM2(+) and AM3 CPU's, but not DDR3 memory.
If you goto an AM3 board you have to move all of it now.
Else go AM2+ board and you can use an AM3 CPU in it later (if the board is AM3 ready)
See a sample of such a board: http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1642

I cant seem to get the HT ref out of the 260's I have lowered everything and still no. Is there a weak clock generator on this board or is it in the BIOS (I doubt it is the bios)?

  • 785GM-E65 and video out

I am looking for an analog video out solution for this mobo. I bought a VGA to component video cable and that gets me an output with jiberish. I'm aiming for s-video or component. I read that some mobo's support s-video out through the VGA port. Does anyone know if MSI has included this feature on this mobo? I have not found any materials that indicate one way or the other.
    Thanks for the help.

This board doesn't support that kind of video output. You could get a video card with super video out or get something like this converter.

  • 785GM-E65 can´t install windows or format HDD

i just bought this board and install it with some of my older pc components including my 1TB HDD, it used to have my old windows 7 installation. I installed this board and boot on my old windows 7 installation but when windows logo appear it automatically shuts down and restart, so i thought it was because with the new mobo i need new installation. so i boot from CD whit windows 7, but when it boots and tell me in which drive i want to install windows, no drive appear so i cannot format mi HDD for the new installation.
please need help with this problem

You can not exchange boards and expect Windows to boot.
As for a new installation, make sure the drive isn't connected to a RAID controller, as mostly you need to install extra drivers.
And check if the controller is running in AHCI or IDE mode, but not RAID.

  • 785GM-E65 eSATA Hot-swappable problem

    Hello!
I bought a new Wiretek VE492 Hard Drive Docking Station to use my Hitachi Deskstar™ 7K2000 2TB HDD like external drive, but have a little problem in use: don't work the eSATA hot swappable function! What is the problem? (The docking station is perfect, I have tested with another pc)
    Thanks the answer!

Turn AHCI on in the BIOS.
However it may stop your Windows from booting.

  • 785GM-E65 tRAS alway auto

hmmm can anyone help/tell me why my bios only allows auto on the tRAS setting? currently have this ram Gskill F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 1600 9-9-9-24-33, when I try setting it to 24 in AOD, it always reverts back to 29... is it cause I am running it at 1600mhz?but I only followed the timings on the ram..

    1600MHz is OC
You can get tighter timings at lower memory frequency
But i fail to see why you want to set tRAS to 24,
lesser tRAS value doesn't means that will be run fastern...
Also adjusting tRAS will makes 0 difference in performance.
    Best leave them to Auto.

  • 785GM-E65 another M-Flash frag

    Hello MSI forum,
I am one of users who used M-Flash to flash newer BIOS and knocked out my motherboard.
I searched many topics with similar problems (so many?) and some with bios recovering, but nothing solved my problem.
    I followed procedure
    1) clear cmos
    2) use only closest memory bank to cpu
    3) connect PS/2 keyboard
    3) connect floppy disk drive
    4) hold down ctrl+home and turn on system
After turning system on CPU fan spins, keyboard leds flash and that is all. Black screen, no floppy attempts.
    Is this motherboard really dead?

APS for me works perfectly with BIOS 2.3. Best idle consumption I have ever seen.
MSI support responds to me about 24 hours and they are willing to listen and communicate.
    Their replied about M-Flash:
"We modified M-flash function in the latest bios version, which you can refer to this link:
    bios
As to your information about M-flash, we will send this to related department to improve later."
So BIOS 2.3 contains modified M-Flash, but for me nevermore.
Have you seen the LED's go down to just one phase? for me they stay on all the time. (obviously I have green power, and C'n'Q activated in the BIOS)

  • 785GM-E65 ram compatibility

    Good day forum!
I would just like to ask if the G.Skill 2 x 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 Mhz /9-9-9-24 / 1.5V /Ripjaws-red / F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL would be compatible with my Motherboard, because it's not listed in the memory module PDF in the main website and i have check with Gskill site and my board isn't listed in the compatible list.. I'm planning to buy a new set of memory module this weekend and I'm choosing between the one stated above and the G.Skill 2 x 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 Mhz /7-8-7-24 /1.6 V / Ripjaws-blue / F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM..

tmxguy thanks for replying yeah i have read that test report, I have no issues with the second ram module but  I just what to be sure if the first ram module works fine on my board, and the first ram is much cheaper that is why I'm torn between both rams...But I might as well buy the tested ones thanks!

  • Temperature discrepancy MSI 785GM-E65

Hi Everyone. I would like to see if someone can help me with this issue. In my new system when reading temperatures the temp from the motherboard reading is always around 15C degrees higher than the reading that I get from the AMD cores. For instance when using AMD Overdrive to run the stability test, I go to check the temperatures and TMPIN0 (CPU Reading from the motherboard) gets to a maximum of 63C degrees (This is with AMD Stock Cooler) However the core temperatures reaches a maximum of 51C degrees (Both are still under specifications) But I wonder which reading is more accurate. Has anyone experienced this discrepancy between these 2 parameters? Thanks again in advance!

Hi Guys the TMPIN0 reading is actually the reading from the Motherboard that you can get in the BIOS. SO basically the motherboard has 2 temperature readings in the BIOS CPU Temp (This is then reflected as TMPIN0 in the reading within windows) and System Temp (This is reflected as TMPIN1 within windows) The problem is that the core temperature reading from the AMD CPU is lower that the TMPIN0 reading and almost 15C degree lower. The TMPIN0 reading is the one that controls the smart fan function, so if this one goes up the CPU cooler spin faster. I have tried Everest but basically the temperatures are the same (because I think they just get the info from the chip in the motherboard) I guess my question is which reading is more accurate? The CPU reading from the motherboard or what the processor cores are reporting? Thanks again!!

    Or maybe a dead mobo.
Is the Power Supply able to feed a fan for more than 30 minutes ? It can happen the PSU to start up and because of a failure capacitor to shut down itself after 5-10 minutes by it s own.
You ll need to swap mobo ,CPU and PSU to see what happens.RMA the 3 hardware pieces and see what the reseler tells you.
I would recheck the PSU too having in mind the failure even if it looks good.
When you get all back working stay with the multimeter connected and see if there are any spikes when you boot or when you load heavy aplications.
Any overclocking on the machine ?
Have you tryed with the mobo outside of the case on some wooden surface ?
