785GM-P45 RAID help

Hey guys,
I'm building a Windows 7 (64) box for my dad and have put three 2TB Seagate SATA drives in the machine for him.  I had wanted to build a RAID 5 array for him, but it's not one of the options.  The options I've got are RAID 0, 1, 10, JBOD, or RAID Ready.  After trying a couple of times (as in a half dozen or so) the BIOS no longer recognizes the drives, and when it did recognize the drives, I never got close to the total space the drives were supposed to have.  The closest I came was Windows 7 seeing the array as two separate drives with one having around 2.5TB (with the 100mb boot) and the other having about 3.5TB.
Anyone got any ideas on how to get the BIOS to see the drives again, and how to set up the array?  I'd like to get him set up as close to a RAID 5 as I can, with the data protection, but at this point I'll take anything that will get the machine up and working.
Any helpful suggestions are welcome!
Thanks!
[MSI 785GM-P45, AMD Phenom II Black Ed, OCZ DDR3 DRAM 2Gb (x2), 3 Seagate Barracuda SATA 2TB HDD (32mb cache 5900rpm), Trying to install fresh copy of Windows 7 64bit]

A few things:
The Boot Sector for ANY Windows install CANNOT be larger then 2 TB.
You can Have other sectors, if you are installing a 64-Bit version of Windows that are larger then 2 TB, but NOT the boot sector.
If you have RAID = RAID (Choices RAID = IDE, AHCI, RAID) in the BIOS, then you'll be able to get to the BIOS Utility screen after the MOBO Image when you power on your PC.
In the BIOS, if you have a RAID array defined, in general you do NOT see individual HDDs in the BIOS.
The BOOT Sequence will let you Pick Which RAID array you want to BOOT first, 2nd, etc.
I have the 790FX-GD70 and the 890FXA-GD70. I have set multiple RAID-0 arrays with the 790FX-GD70 and it was really straight forward as long and you get the BOOT partition at 2 TB or less, are installing a 64-bit OS (If you want non-BOOT partitions larger than 2TB) and define the other Partitions.
If RAID-5 is NOT supported then you will NOT be able to use that scheme for BOOT.
That is, Unless you get a PCI-E RAID card.
Good luck!

  • Need help regarding MSI 785GM-P45

    Hi
New to this forum so I will try to give as much info as possible. If you have any suggestions please give as much details as possible since I am new to building my own HTPC
    Motherboard: MSI 785GM-P45
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0 GHz
    RAM: AVeir 2GB DDR3-1333
    HD: EIDE 80GB WD
I installed the cpu and heat sink as well as the RAM in DIMM1 then I attached the power to the mother board. Also attached then box power switch and HDD connections to the motherboard. When I press the power switch on the box I can see the cpu fan turning and box fan turning as well as hear HD spinning (at this point I dont have IDE cable connected to HD). then I attached the display to the mother board and the display does not show anything (displays standby light is still yellow). I power off the system and then attach IDE cable to the HD and then power on the system and this time everything works like before but one thing is different. I cannot hear the HD spinning or powered up. Not sure what is happening. Any suggestion would be welcome
    Thanks

You get no display on the monitor?

I've heard that some mobo's and do it and some cant but i haven't been able to find any information that has really helped me any so i figured this would be the place to ask...

after enable the Unlock CPU Core function and Enable the ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) function, you leave the core control to auto. reboot and see if it is stable. if not stable, come back to bios, and set core control to manual, try to disable one of core 3, and core4. if stable, you get a good X3. if still not stable, then you cpu is still a good x2.

  • 785GM-P45 & Windows 7

    Hi All,
I put together 785GM-P45 and AMD Phenom II X2 560 yesterday.  Everything went smoothly until the first boot into Windows 7 Ultimate x64.  Win7 did not recognize any hardware to install drivers for.  From my past experience on my Gigabyte board with Q6600, Win7 recognized all hardware including my linksys wireless pci card.  Is there something wrong or this is just the way it is?  Thanks in advance!

    Quote from: b00st4ddicted on 08-January-11, 02:35:03
it did not recognize the on-board video, on-board sound, and my linksys pci wireless card
You mean it shows (?) against those devices in the Device Manager?
If so, then just install the drivers for them:
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1883
For your Linksys card, you'll need to obtain those drivers from Linksys.

with 4x sticks you may need to drop memory freq. to 1066MHz and also ensure that you use 2T

  • 785GM-P45 with 1GB dedicated video memory in bios

has anyone able to allocate 1GB for dedicated video memory in bios and has at least 8GB of RAM. i had already updated the bios to version 11.8, with any 3 sticks of kingston 2GB RAM I can allocate 1GB for video memory in the bios, but the minute that i have the 4th stick install, the pc will not complete boot into windows. with only 3 sticks, it doesn't matter which memory slot is open, it will boot into windows and shows 1GB dedicated video memory. all the RAM tested fine with remtest. with all 4 stick install it will only boot into windows with 512mb dedicated video memory. thanks in advance.

  • 785GM-P45 HDMI screen size problem

    Happy New Year, folks!
I connected my 785GM-P45 board to an Asus 23.2" LCD monitor (native resolution: 1920x1080) via HDMI, set the resolution to 1920x1080, and was dismayed to find out that the display was not occupying the entire screen. There was a 1-inch black border all round the display.
As a test, I connected the Asus monitor to a Foxconn board via HDMI. Behold, the display nicely occupied the whole screen.
As a second test, I connected the monitor to the 785GM-P45 again, but this time via a VGA cable. The display occupied the whole screen. No annoying black borders.
So the problem seems to be in the HDMI output of the MSI board. Any suggestions and solutions would be most appreciated.

For those who may have a similar problem (main monitor, Acer 21.5" LED, worked fine, Sony 40" on HDMI could not get to fill the screen and will only output at max of 1280x1024 if main is set to native 1920x1080) this will fill the screen on a secondary monitor as well... Thanks Mark.

  • XP Pro fails at install with RAID 1 and 4GB RAM on P45 MB - help?

    Hello all,
I am new to this forum so bear with me.  Having read several threads I see that this forum is very helpful and responsive.  Thanks in advance for all your help and please let me know if I could answer other questions that might help you diagnose this challenge.
    System:
    Antec 900 Case
    MSI P45 Platinum MB
    Intel Q9300 processor
    4GB Corsair DDR2 800GHz
    2 300GB VelociRaptors in RAID 1 configuration
    Gigabyte HD3850 video card
Not sure if you need all of this, but am pretty sure you will need more.  Please don't hesitate asking if you do.
My situation is that I can get the hard drives mirrored fine through BIOS using the JMicron controllers, but loading WinXP Pro 32 fails shortly after I insert the JMicron Additional Device floppy.  I have tried several different versions of the device floppy files with the same result.  The error I get is the blue screen Stop 0x0000007B notice that isn't helpful at all.
RAID is recognized perfectly when turned on.  I just get the Stop 0x0000007B error that stops the installation.  Not sure what to do.  Although likely not relevent, I have some questions.
Will XP support 4GB RAM (2 x 2GB Corsair DDR2 800GHz)?  If it only recognizes 3.2GB of it, will the additional memory cause such an issue as described above?  If so, could I use just one 2GB module or do they need to be in pairs?
Should I scrap the JMicron controllers and uses the Intel controllers?  I would like to think that this is not the remedy, as a neighbor of mine has installed several of these same systems but with Vista.
    Thanks for all your help.
    Kurt

It would appear the the last two core temperatures are too high, but I suspect that the sensors are bad for them.  These temperatures were within a few minutes of powering the un-taxed computer.
Run some sort of CPU Stressing application (Prime95, Orthos or similar) to put all cores under full load and check your core temps again.  See how the sensors respond.

Interestingly, when I powered the computer after Hibernation it took longer for Windows to resume than it does to completely boot up (resuming windows status bar at bottom of screen).  However when I put the computer into Stand By mode it will resume really quickly.
That is normal: In Hibernation mode, all the data that is stored in system memory is copied to a file on your hard drive (basically an image of your system memory is created.) After that the system is completely shut down. When you restart the system, the RAM image is written back to the system memory.
In S3 Standby Mode, the system still supplies power to the memory.  When you switch the system back on, nothing has to be written back to system memory, as everything is still there.  That is why it is faster.

Is it Stand By that I should be more interested in because of the faster recovery?
Yes. For power saving, hibernation is the better alternative.

Two questions; one, what settings would I need to awaken the computer without the power switch,
Look in BIOS under "Wake Up Event Setup" and look at these settings:
    - Wake Up Event By = [BIOS]/[OS]
    - Resume From S3 By USB Device
    - Resume From S3 By PS/2 Keyboard
    - Hot Key
    - Resume From S3 By PS/2 Mouse
Play around with these settings (I don't know what devices you use) and test what works best for your purposes. I am sure you will figure something out.

  • Diamond Plus- Silicon Image controller set up single SATA 2 non raid "HELP"

Could somebody please tell me what drivers exactly do you have to load for Windows install off of the floppy? I loaded the silcon image 32 drivers at the install but the boot into windows takes a long time ! In bios SATA 1 SATA 2  are enabled -non raid for Silicon Image controller. Is their any kind of special procedure or trick for  for useing the the controller non raid mode? Just added another HDD to my system formatted first with WD Lifeguard Tools and  unhooked my othet drives and 1 of my dvd burners but for some reason It took like 2hrs 20 min too load windows when I specified additional drives their wer like 4-5 to choose from and the only non raid refference 1 was the first which I belive silicon image sys32 do you have to install all of them like the nvidea ones? man I had absolutely no problems setting up my 2- 80gb WD Caviars in raid 0 but the new 250gb WD caviar se16 is another story. ALL ARE SATA 2 DRIVES  so I know that SATA 2 works on my board im useing it right now! Could any of the lLocal Forum Gurus with prior experience with the controller tell me exactly how to configure the set up NON RAID!  PLLLLLLEASE.........
                                                      Thanks in advance

Thanks for all of you help Bas, and the quick responce! I was asking  about which would be the prefered set up  raid 0 on silicon image  and sigle drive non raid on port 3-4 Nvidea or vice versa. I'm sure that it is a matter of prefference, but I do plan to overclock slightly when it cools down and I have done more reading on it! My primary goal is Stabilily and performance in harmonic balance whith out data corruption, or risking blowing things up! Any way hows life in Belgium? I have yet to travel to Europe, traveled to just about all of the states and lived on 2 of the Hawaiian Islands. So as you can tell Bas I am more partial to warm weather. I am quite a bit more in tuned with European culture than most people. My folks are from Australia and New Zealand so i'm not youre typical American! Shoot's Bro thanks for all of youre help and have a good weekend!!

  • Mac Pro shuts down after setting up RAID (HELP!)

So, I recently purchased a rev 1 Mac Pro and decided to setup a RAID using 4 750gb WD drives. I am not using a RAID card, simply using Disk Utility.
I first combined drives in bays 1 and 2 (striped) and then combined drives in bays 3 and 4 (striped) to give me essentially two 1.5tb drives.
I then created a mirrored RAID using the two striped raids so that I would have the speed of a striped RAID with the safety of a mirrored RAID.
Once I did this, it showed up as one hard disk on my desktop (I was booting with an external). I then cloned my external drive to the new RAID disk on the desktop, and did so successfully.
However, now when I try to boot from the RAID, it chimes, the Apple appears, and then the Mac Pro shuts down. I tried holding down option and all 4 drives appear. I tried booting from a different drive, and the same thing happens. I should also note that the firmware bar flashes on the screen before shutting down (looks like a really long pill).
Any ideas? Does it sound like I did something wrong? I hate to start from scratch, as it takes all night to clone my external drive to the Mac Pro. Thanks for any help.

Hello, Hatter. Thanks so much for the information. I went with the information from the Macworld article (I believe) "RAIDing the Mac Pro" and according to it this setup was supposedly a great idea. But, yes, it's not working out so perhaps not in this case.
So, I have four brand new 750gb Caviar Black drives installed. If I understand you correctly, I should stripe 3 disks together, then use a 4th as backup (using Time Machine?). So, if I use the drives I have, I'll have a striped configuration that gives me 2.25TB of space, and a 750gb hard drive for backup. That technically would work for now, as I have about 660gb of data on the system (although in the future I'd need to swap out that 4th drive for a 2TB.
So, if that is what you're suggesting, would you mind telling me exactly how I do that? I think I understand, but just want to make sure as this is my first Mac Pro and first time setting up a RAID. Thank you so much for your response.
p.s.: I'm guessing I'll need to do a fresh start and clone my external drive all over again, correct?

  • Nubee raid help

Sorry if posting in wrong topic are but figured you guys would know this board best. Just ordered everything in my sig,,, some stuff here,,, some stuf on it's way.
I need your help on configuring the seagates in RAID-1 and I'm going to order a smaller drive just for OS, system files. I do a lot of video editing and just want to keep these two things separate with redundancy for the 2 segates but not sure how to go about this with this board. Been 5 years since I built my last one and this seems to be the only thing I'm  not up to date on... Never dealt with setting up raid or SATA. And just want to be prepared in advance and try my best to avoid talking to Bobo from Ooba Booba Land at tech assist. Been there done that
Just hate to sound ignorant but I pretty much need a simplified step by step for the hookups on this board. Read the online manual and still feel pretty stupid,,, but hopefully you all can help. Probably going with another smaller seagate for OS/sys files,,, unless you all have another suggestion.. Thanks so much in advance for your input
