785gtm-e45 cpu temperature very hot

hi, i just bought a 785gtm-e45 mobo yesterday (upgraded from a 780g chipset).. After installation,i turned on the pc and noticed the cpu fan being very noisy. i went to the bios and saw my cpu temp hitting 58-60 degrees (reason why the fan is very noisy). my processor is phenom II x2 550. i want to know if this is a normal behavior of the msi mobo before i continue installing an OS. because as far as i know,58-60 degrees is very hot (without any OC) and the recent mobo i had does not even come close to these numbers no matter how much i overclock it. i presume that it has defect, that's why im afraid to go further that could possibly do damage to other components.

ok, tnx for the reply.. i managed to install windows 7 with no problems and cpu temp goes down to 45-50 degrees in windows. but i observed that when i keep on staying in the bios, cpu temp keeps on getting higher and higher up to 60 degrees. also, the cpu locks when i enter the CPU specifications. is this normal?? my 550 was bought 2 months ago (new out of the box). the only thing i bought yesterday was this msi mobo. i bought it because of ACC. im asking these questions because im very surprised with the big difference in temps with my previous mobo to this new one. with the previous one, i managed to overclock my 550 to 3.6ghz (stable) and temperature doesn't even reach 45 degrees (even at a hot weather).

  • CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine

    Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.

    Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:

  • My macbook CPU is very hot but mostly inactive

    Hi guys,
i have a problem with my Macbook rencently, for maybe 2 or 3 weeks.
The CPU is super hot, between 72℃ and 80℃, but the activity of the CPU is around 4% only.
    I already tried the following:
    - killing all running processes
    - reset the SMC
    - log in as Guest user
    But it didn't change anything.
The temperature of the room is cool, around 25-26℃.
My Macbook has the latest updates, and has plenty of ram (8gb).
Anyone had the same issue ?
Any ideas on how to fix it ?
    Thanks !

    From the Manual:
"Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power
functions. If the computer is experiencing any power issue, such as not starting up, not
displaying video, sleep issues, or fan noise issues, resetting SMC may resolve it. To reset SMC:
    1. If computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shut Down from the Apple () menu.
    2. Connect power adapter to computer and to a working power source.
    3. On built-in keyboard, press (left-side) Shift-Control-Option along with power button just
once.  Important: Use Shift-Control-Option keys on left side of keyboard.
Note: When the LED on the MagSafe connector is orange/amber, resetting the SMC will
change it to green for a few seconds, indicating that SMC was correctly reset.
    4. Wait 5 seconds and press power button to start computer.  Note: If bottom case is removed,
you can alternately reset SMC by disconnecting both power adapter and main battery, and
holding down power button for 5 seconds."
Just verifying you're doing the exact procedure.
The fan connector can be bad.
The SMC is easily damaged by static electricity.
So if the sensor is bad it means replacing the logic board.
    >wouldn't explain the battery drainage.<
It seems there was a recall of this model's battery, That site is gone however.
Hav you tried it with the battery disconnected? After a SMC reset?

  • 785GTM-E45 CPU support COMPLETELY MISSING

    Howdy all!
I checked the MSI website, I checked this forum, I googled the whole Internet but I cant find a list of working processors with the MB in subj.
http://www.msi.com/service/cpu-support/ leads to a "Not found" page when selecting the MB from the menus. http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/785GTM-E45.html proposes a list of supported CPUs as of BIOS v8.0, but I read here that the BIOS version is currently (?) 8.6.
Where the good 'ol table with which processor is supported starting from which BIOS version has gone? Why the BIOS files are not listed in the "Downloads" section along with a description of the new features? Why this MB has been forgotten by MSI?
    Thanks.

  • Normal CPU Temperature?  Very Hot here...

My normal CPU temperature, according a widget I have installed on my Dashboard is around 150-160 degree F (with spikes up to 177 F). My fan is constantly whining and turning on and off even when I just have Safari open.
I tried using apple's new "chat" feature, and the chat support agent only ended up suggesting that I call in and possibly schedule an on-site visit.
What is your normal temperature? I'd like to have some basis for comparing, and also, what software do you use to measure the temperature?

Its hard to determine a normal temp for the cpu. It appears that the baseline is:
    cpu 140F fan 1500rpm
    HD 120-130F fan 2000rpm
    Syst fan 1500 rpm
Once the cpu starts to do a little work it throws off a lot of heat (Apple's nemesis) and the variable speed fans start to wind up. At some cpu temp, and I don't know what that is, the machine shuts down and at that point the fans are working their cans off and getting nowhere. Apples solution to this problem, is Intel. In the mean time they will placate you and look at your machine but they not going to spend a lot of time or money on a fix now. They got the look they wanted, and I love it, but the trade off is a little fan noise that we are going to have to live with.

  • 785gtm-e45 temperature

Temperature in BIOS are okay for CPU/System < 30C
However I see in Speedfan that Temp2 is at 92C, approaching 115C under load
HWMonitor shows same 92C in TMPIN1
Why is it so high? I touched all cpu cooler/north/south bridges with finger, doesn't feel hot.
    785gtm-e45 bios ver 8

    80GB x25-m SSD 2nd gen
    earthwatt 380W

Everest is a great tool but it's not free.
    >IF< you have something reaching 92C, you'll want to know what it is, what it's heat range is, and make sure that's well within spec.  I've seen NB with max temps as low as 80C and as high as 105C over the last few years.  GPUs can get considerably hotter but generally you wouldn't see 92C without serious stress or volt modding.
I would try to find out what that reading applies to, if anything, and ensure that it is a correct reading.  There is no standard for diode reporting.  Consequently, the math involved is different for different devices, so the temp could be much higher or much lower if you have a bad conversion being used.  You can have a lot more confidence in a reading that specifically and correctly identifies the device it's saying has that temperature, but it's still good to cross check with more than one piece of software.  The nice thing about Everest is that if it doesn't work right for your system, they'll fix it.

  • In my macbook pro 15 inch mid 2012 model, my cpu and gpu will get very hot, when gaming or rendering sometimes over 200F. The fans only spin at max about 2900 rpm, when their max is 6400. I downloaded a fan control app, but how can i fix it?

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:

  • MSI 785GTM-E45 BIOS CPU fan voltage control

    Hello MSI gurus,
I've replaced the MB in an older HP media center with the MSI 785GTM-E45 running BIOS V8.8 out of the box.
    CPU = Athlon 64 X2 4200+
My problem is the stock CPU fan has a 3 pin connection (voltage controlled) and is running at 100% speed all the time.  From what I've read on the forums there are a number of people that have this issue (with other MBs with 4 pin cpu fan headers) and don't want to switch to a 4 pin CPU fan (PWM controlled).  I am in the same situation.
I am hoping that there is a BIOS for this board that has an option to switch to or enable voltage control on the CPU fan header.
I have tried enabling the CPU smart fan target but no matter what settings I chose the fan remains at 100%.  The H/W monitor of the MB indicates a CPU temperature (33C) well below the target (tried all options from 40C to 60C in 5C increments).
I have tried MSI's dual core center and it had no effect on the fan speed.
I have tried the 3rd party freeware SpeedFan and if had no effect on the fan speed.
I am not able to check if I have the latest BIOS or even find changelogs for existing BIOS verions because MSI seems to only direct BIOS downloads for this product to the Live update application.  I have installed the live update program and it indicated V8.8 was the most recent veriosn of the BIOS for this board, although I have seen posts indicating the Live Update application is not to be trusted.
Dual core center, SpeedFan, and Live Update have all now been uninstalled.
I know the fan I'm using will change speed because I can connect a 3 pin fan controller and manually dial down the speed.
I know the BIOS can read the fan speed becase it correctly shows the RPM changes when I use the hardware fan controller.
Can anyone direct me to a BIOS version for this board (or some secret keystroke) that enables automated 3 pin voltage control on the CPU fan header?
Thanks in advance for your time.

For those who are interested I received the following answer from MSI technical support.  Personally I find this to be a flaw in this board's design.  I chose this MB to replace a dead MB in a HP media center for a friend.  If I was buying this board for myself I likely would be using it as a HTPC because of the mATX form factor, HDMI on board, and backward compatibility for CPUs.  However, due to the added cost of purchasing a new heat sink and fan I would be RMAing if I had bought it for myself.  Considering many of the top performing after market coolers still come with a 3 pin fan it was a poor decision for MSI to not include support for automatic speed control of a 3 pin voltage controlled fan.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
Thanks for contacting msi technical support team!
We are sorry that because of the circuit designs,we could not add cpu smart function for 3 pin's connector fan in the BIOS. The difference between 3pins and 4pins is that the second has a temperature controller but the first does not.We would suggest you utilize a 4-pin CPU Fan in order to control the CPU Fan speed.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused you!

I recently bought a 785GTM-E45 and have a Phenom II x2 560 in it.  I have a sata harddrive drive attached with the Raid setting to AHCI.  I have windows 7 x64 running fine, but wanted to see if I could unlock any cores.  If I enable ACC but leave Unlock CPU Core to Disabled, I can boot fine.  But when I change Unlock CPU Core to Enabled and reboot, i get the Post messages and it identifies the CPU as Phenom II X4 B60.  Its goes through the whole posting until it get to initializing the sata drives.  It will sit on that screen for a few minutes and then say that no drives are found so it cant boot.  If i do the same thing with the harddrive unplugged, it immediately says it can't find any drives.  I have tried changing the Raid setting to IDE with similar results.   I am running bios version 8.8  One thing I noticed that I thought was strange is that when I do the save after enabling CPU Unlock, the computer totally shuts off.  The power light turns off, all drives and fans turn off, then it turns it self back on and does the reboot.  It only does this with CPU Unlock enabled.

I believe that AMD is doing a more thorough job of disabling defective cores on those things and you will not be able to unlock. We've been seeing more and more of that recently on the 5xx series. If you want more cores then you will have to pay for them, looks like no longer a free ride for extra cores. Can't blame MSI for that.

  • 785GTM-E45 mobo: Q'n'C is enabled but CPU fan doesn't slow down

Q'n'C is on, CPU clock is down when idle but CPU fan rotates on full and makes noise. Bios fan settings cannot do anything to slowdown the fan.
Tried two coolers with  same result. All coolers were with 3pin connectors while there is 4-pin jack on mobo. Bios has been updated - no result.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

    "Fan Power Connectors: CPUFAN1, SYSFAN1
The fan power connectors support system cooling fan with +12V. When connecting the
wire to the connectors, always note that the red wire is the positive and should be connected
to the +12V; the black wire is Ground and should be connected to GND. If the
mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially
designed fan with speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control.
Please refer to the recommended CPU fans at processor’s official website or consult
the vendors for proper CPU cooling fan.
CPUFAN1 supports fan control. You can install Dual Core Center utility that will automatically
control the CPU fan speed according to the actual CPU temperature.
Fan cooler set with 3 or 4 pins power connector are both available for CPUFAN1.
SYSFAN1 support fan control, too. You may select how percentage of speed for the
    SYSFAN1 in BIOS." P2-12
    "CPU Smart FAN Target
The mainboard provides the Smart Fan function which can control the CPU fan speed
automatically depending on the current temperature to keep it with in a specific range.
You can enable a fan target value here. If the current CPU fan temperature reaches to
the target value, the smart fan function will be activated. It provides several sections to
speed up for cooling down automatically.
    PC Health Status
CPU/ System Temperature, CPU FAN/ SYS FAN 1 Speed, CPU Vcore, 3.3V, 5V,
    12V
These items display the current status of all of the monitored hardware devices/components
such as CPU voltage, temperatures and all fans’ speeds." P3-15
Do n o t  use other monitoring and fan controlling programs at the same time. There must be something the matter with the fan cable or the processor seating. 3 pins have been enough for fan control since before 2000, and as you notice on the processor fan connection, you can choose between 3 and 4 pin fan connection. Pretty silly to have such a choice if 3 pins wouldn't work.
    - Heck, even the photos in the manual displays a three pin '!

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running very hot

    Hi all,
My mid-2010 Macbook pro is running very hot. On average CPU is 61-70 degrees Celsius, sometimes even more. I'm pretty bad at having lots of chrome tabs open and heavy multitasking, but even when I'm not temperature still ends up very high and fan rpm can get to over 6000. Heat seems to be concentrated to the lefthand side of the touchpad (battery area?). I'm running 10.9.3.
Current stats below from iStat pro widget (smcFanControl concurs with these temps), with only the following pic's activity running. Laptop currently balanced on two books (so airflow around the sides) which are in turn on my lap.
I have tried reseting the SMC with the shift-control-option-power method but it doesn't seem to have worked - instructions said to press and hold this, then release, then press power again to boot, but laptop boots up from this combination anyway.
Am I just doing something wrong or will this be an expensive trip to the apple store to fix?

    Hey happyhaskins,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro running excessively hot, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • The bottom of the computer gets very hot

I just got this macbook pro MC721ll/a. The bottom of the computer gets very hot as it is sitting on my lap. I have never had a mac before but I don't think it should be doing that. Also, I don't hear any fans running. Is this normal?

The OS keeps the fans at a minimal speed because running them any faster would needlessly use extra energy and make more noise.  Manually setting your fan speed won't wear out the fans because they're brushless AC fans (so they're not subject to any significant mechanical wear as they spin).  One thing to keep in mind about SMC FanControl: Apple engineers spent a great deal of time, and probably money as well, designing the cooling systems for the computer (both in terms of the physical systems, and the algorithms that control the fans and regulate the voltages of the components).  In addition, Intel CPUs have their own separate temperature monitoring systems which will severely throttle or even shut down the CPU if temperatures get dangerously high.  So even in the extremely unlikely event that your fans ever actually spin too slowly, the computer will still shut itself off before anything bad happens.
And to answer your first question, it is definitely normal for the bottom of the Macbook to get hot because the body is made from aluminum, one of the best thermal conductors known.  Basically the bottom acts as a heat sink, allowing the Macbook to cool off more efficiently and run faster.  Most other manufacturers make the bodies of their laptops from plastics, which conduct heat about as well as fiberglass insulation or a mink coat.

  • Imac 27" 2012 Mountain Lion running very hot

Please help. My 27" IMac running very hot, especially top left corner. Is there a fix.
    Tony R

A couple of things.  First, do you know what the internal temperature are? if not, look into getting the widget istat from slayer.  It will show you something like this:
You can monitor the fan speeds and temps.
The iMac should speed up the fans in relation to the temperatures against a profile determined by Apple.  If for some reason, your fan speeds are low and the temp is sitll high, you may need to reset your SMC.  That is the shutdown, unplug, wait, plug it back in, restart maintenance proceedure.
If everything is working properly and you still don't like the temperatures, you can download SMCfancontrol.  This applications allows you to speed up your fans manually or set higher minimums.
Lastly, iMacs to get hot and are designed for it.  Apple wants to keep the fans speeds down so the system is quiet.  If you play lots of games, or doing a lot of GPU/CPU intensive work, it is normal for the chips to hit 70C at the case and the fans to be clearly audible.  If you were expecting to work the machine hard but the aluminum backside to be just warm, that won't happen.

thin horizontal lines appear occasionally across window of firefox, if i switch to finder, not there. appears to stay with windows of different programs.
lately above the keyboard along back edge in the middle under monitor gets very hot almost to hot to touch, uncomfortable on lap.
i have no idea what the memory cards are. some have suggested i should replace memory cards?

I don't really know about the new models as far as typical operating temperatures. The ones you mention are not meaningfully high to me. My 2011 13" MBP with an i5 CPU typically idles near 50º C.
As for the speed issue that is hard to evaluate on the basis of personal opinion. You can download and run GeekBench benchmarks and compare the results to those reported for the same model configuration. You can use CineBench to benchmark video performance.
