790fx-gd70 and the dreaded FF

Hi!
first, my hardware:
MSI 790FX-GD70, 790FX (dual PC3-10667U DDR3) (7577-010R)
AMD Phenom II X4 955 (C2) Black Edition, 4x 3.20GHz, boxed (HDZ955FBGIBOX)
a) OCZ Platinum Low-Voltage DIMM Kit 4GB PC3-10667U CL7-7-7-20 (DDR3-1333) (OCZ3P1333LV4GK)
b) Kingston ValueRAM DIMM 2GB PC3-10667U CL9 (DDR3-1333) (KVR1333D3N9/2G)
Gigabyte Radeon HD 4350, 512MB DDR2, VGA, DVI, HDMI, PCIe 2.0 (GV-R435OC-512I)
LC-Power Silent Giant LC6550GP2 Green Power 550W, ATX 2.2
I just got a brand new 790fx-gd70 out of RMA (I had to RMA my original board because I tried flashing bios via the m-flash).
As I have intel certified memory I flashed the latest 1.7 bios (with the help of the utility). A few day all was good, when my computer started freezing. I pinpointed the problem to a faulty memory stick and send it to RMA.
I put the Kingston memory in as a temporary fix till I get the OCZ from RAM and just in case ran memtest. After a few errors, memtest froze and after the reboot I ended up with the FF on the display.
If I remove the memory module I get three beeps, but it's still stuck at FF.
Any ideas what I should do next? I don't have the patience to RMA the board again as i'll probably have to wait another 30 days...
Thanks for any answers.

Looks like a combined problem.
However the first can be caused by that junk powersupply.
You can't get a decent powersupply for 30 Euro.....just see the figures: +12V @ 16A

  • 790FX-GD70 and Double Channel Memory on slots 3 and 4 only ????

    Hi,
I am planning a complete AM3 build. I am very interested in the 790FX-GD70 motherboard with AMD's 955 BE CPU & Corsair Dominator memory (2 X 2G). Problem is I want to cool the CPU with a Noctua NH-U12P heatsink, which from reviews and research, will block Corsair Dominators (and other large heatsink mem) on bank 1 and maybe bank 2. So my question is this, can I install the memory on bank's 3 and 4 only, and still operate in dual channel mode ????
If not, then I guess I'll just have to ditch the dominator's in exchange for the XMS.
    Thanks in advance,
    am3builder

You don't need giant heat spreaders on the RAM, they really don't do much good  and just interfere with good CPU coolers. How many years have you used RAM without that junk stuck on them? For the most part it's all eye candy, put another way 'all show and no go'.

  • Podcasts and the dreaded exclamation point

Most of my podcasts will no longer update. This actually started BEFORE iTunes 7. I can see new episodes are available but when I try to download I get messages like "this URL was not found on the server". Per another poster, I tried deleting and reloading one of the podcast subscriptions. Not only did I lose everything, I cannot resubscribe. I get the URL message. I can, however manually download individual episodes (pain in the...)
    How can I escape the ! ?

I'm having similar problems with the dreaded exclamation point. Even after reading several threads, my problem still isn't solved. Here's the lowdown:
I've tested this feed on 7 different computers (5 PCs, 2 Macs).
All but 2 of the computers can subscribe and download the episodes with no problems. The troublesome computers? One PC. And one Mac.
The feed has been redirected through FeedBurner. I'm subscribing manually (and yes, I typed the feed correctly).
On the problem PC, I can't even get iTunes to recognize the podcast.
When I subscribe to the "original" .xml doc (not through FeedBurner), it works fine.
On the problem Mac, I can subscribe to the podcast. The episodes appear. But none of them will download. I get the exclamation point each time. Clicking on it reveals this message: "There was a problem adding ('Episode Name') to iTunes. The file might be corrupted, or a file type that iTunes cannot play."
When I subscribe to the "original" .xml doc (not through FeedBurner), it gives the same results.
The problem computers are both running iTunes 7.0.2 (15)
The 5 computers that work (Mac and PC) are running various versions of iTunes.
I've downloaded some random podcasts from the iTunes Store on the Mac. Some work. Some still give me the exclamation point.
I've downloaded some random podcasts (even others from FeedBurner) on the PC. Everything works - except the one I really need.

  • MacTel iMac and the dreaded fan noise...

a buddy of mine bought an iMac G5 2 Ghz last June and mentioned having no problem with the dreaded fan noises of said iMac. fast forward to last week when we got together to do some nerdy stuff in front of same iMac when he casually mentions to me. "my fans have been going crazy lately" ... not that his iMac sounds like a jet turbine or anything, but it got me thinking about the new "Intel Inside" Macs. and with two cores inside, goodness!
so b4 i rush out and buy one of these babies -- i'm going to wait and see regarding the fans. but it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
    CMM.
PS.. i am a bit amazed (and elated!) that the Intel Inside Macs have already become a reality -- 6 months sooner than expected. (who would have thought!)
    YAY!

    Miriam,
Maybe I was a little premature. I just went to abc.com to watch the last episode of Men in Trees and here's the results.
With ABC video running (maybe quarter screen size), the CPU was running at a steady 65-70%, CPU temp 69.8, CPU fan 4791-4814 steady (very loud).
Didn't seem to be a high bandwidth download as net was clicking at 117 Kb/sec.
Oh well...don't really consider this very good performance. The fan went down to the 2700 range on reduced, but then the video was choppy. Good thing my capacitors are leaking...Maybe I'll get a Core 2 under my 3 year Apple Care.

  • BT Netprotect and the dreaded white screen

I see a lot of negatives on this site about BT Netprotect but it has always worked for me.  My pc has a decent processor and memory bank so resources have not been a problem.  So you can imagine my dismay when Netprotect would not load and simply presented the dreaded white screen.  More dismay when I could not remove it using windows 7 or ccleaner.  Tried all sorts including a big old swear at the inanimate object.  Feeling better at having got my frustrations off my chest I decided that for whatever reason Netprotect had gone.   In a moment of pure genius (blush) I decided to try and reinstall.  I logged into my BT account and followed the links.  Downloaded the files and watched with childlike smugness as McAfee deleted all the old files and reinstalled new ones.   One check for updates and a full scan later and the smugness was at swmbo is gonna slap me levels.  It was worth it, it worked.  If you have the same problem it may work for you.  Downsides, stupid program made me delete Spybot and Malwarebytes as "unsafe", now reinstalled and working fine.  'Ells bells, BT labs use Malwarebytes!  Netprotect may not be perfect, is resource greedy and can frustrate you, but the white screen menace can be beaten.
Of course when I boot my pc tomorrow (okay today now), if I see a white screen and a McAfee logo, swmbo may yet see a grown man cry.....

Glad you got it sorted. Reinstalling often sorts out problem software, having said that I still wouldn't have BTNetprotect on my computer. I have never heard of any other antivirus giving any problems like the amount that BTNetprotect and McAfee does.

    2) On SDK checked the 2.1 build, also tried 2.0
    3) Deleted all my certs and provisioning files and remade new ones
    4) Restored device (itouch)
    5) info.plist file I made sure it said com.company.appname, I also tried mynum.com.company.appname and com.company.appname.*

I am so lost on this, please someone help. I was working for months just fine, then all of a sudden 2.1 has crippled me.

  • Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start which eventually leads to windows error 193 which never goes away no matter what I do  and the dreaded

Mid way through download of I-Tunes after clearing every Apple program from my computer I get "Apple Mobile Device Service" failed to start message.  Eventually leading to Windows error 193 (error 7).  How do I get Apple Mobile Device Service to start so I do not get error messages and failure of I-Tunes to install?

If you have a 64-bit machine, then try the "for older video cards" version...
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Powerbook and the dreaded alternating ? and smiling face in a folder.

Hi, My G4 Powerbook has had a dead main battery for ages and I use it plugged in. It recently started losing wifi settings and date and time. I read on a forum that it was the PRAM battery and that it had drained and to take out the main battery and leave on charge for 48hrs. I did that.
As an aside I had upgraded recently to OS 10.5.8 and done a clean install at the time.
The computer then would make the start up sound but not launch the screen. This seemed to resolve itself however it then launched straight into Open Firmware saying bad memory (or something like that) and to type mac-boot so I did and then it just gave me the flashing ? and face folder.
I reset the PRAM and NVRAM in the open firmware but no good.
I found something on Bombich that said about how to setenv so I tried that (probably should not have done before asking here) No joy.
It started opening to the apple logo then the shade came down and the restart you computer by holding down the start button text came up.
I have plugged the laptop in in firewire mode (holding down the T button on start up) The hard disc still seems good.
I have tried holding down C to get it to start on a bootable CD no joy.
The machine currently starts up chimes and then goes to the flashing folder/? logo.
I have run out of ideas anyone got any thoughts.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
launched straight into Open Firmware saying bad memory (or something like that) and to type mac-boot so I did and then it just gave me the flashing ? and face folder.
Most likely the RAM is bad. (memory)
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Lightroom 3, Epson R2400 and the dreaded magenta cast

A customer called me to say her printer was broken and nothing she could do would make her Epson R2400 print accurately from Lightroom on her iMac running Snow Leopard. I visited expecting to have to sort out a double profiling issue or a clogged printer.
However, this was not the case. A nozzle check revealed very mild clogging on the light cyan cartridge but nothing too bad and it cleared quickly. Checking the print settings in Lightroom and the Epson driver settings suggested that there wasn't a problem there either - colour managed by a profile in Lightroom with printer colour management turned off. A couple of test prints resulted in images with a definite over-all magenta cast. Plodding through threads on this forum and others came up with all the usual profile issues which I reckoned were not applicable in this case. Still, I downloaded and reinstalled the Epson driver and also the icc profiles for the papers being used, in this instance those supplied by Permajet, in case there was some corruption. The problem persisted.
Now there are a lot of speculative solutions out on the web, some of them involving tweaks to the OS, others recommending monitor profiling (not the problem here) and some suggeting the use of elaborate presets to distort the colours to a printable result. None of these seemed useful - the screen colour was fine and the histograms weren't unbalanced in a magenta direction. It should just work.
Then I wondered about the little 16 Bit checkbox. What if I ticked that? Result - PERFECT. Lovely colour immediately. Now, I'm not sure why printing in 16 Bit should sort out the magenta cast in this case but it does. There is a general opinion, even in books such as that by Martin Evening, that 16 Bit is an interesting option but not vital. In the case outlined here it is vital.
So, if you are having magenta cast problems try ticking the 16 Bit box. It may just save your last clumps of hair from being torn out.

I wouldn't argue with you re the R2400 and its capabilities as it isn't mine and I didn't have any of its literature while trying to get to the bottom of the problem. The profiles I tried were Epson's own and a Permajet one from their website. Both produced magenta results until 16 Bit was turned on, or at least that seemed the trigger for the better results. Unexpected, I agree.

  • 4G/LTE and the dread i5 battery gremlin

Got my i5 in Dec. '12. After understanding its many knobs and buttons (touchy/feely ones, naturally), given that I was a Nokia fanboi previously and total iPhone virgin, finally got a setup that let the battery last for almost 4 days with moderate use. At the time, the carrier had grossly overestimated bandwidth requirements and they had to shut down their 4G/LTE service, so the phone ran on 3G without problems. i5 life was reasonably good.
Then early last week, the carrier finally had the capacity to feed all the bunches of i4 and i5 it managed to sell for Xmas, so they fired up their 4G/LTE antennas. Connectivity was actually faster than my office LAN, notwithstanding that we have a 1Gbps pipe to the outside world....  And the battery went dead in a similar breathtaking fashion. Given that it was the only change in my i5 world, it had to be the cause, as Sherlock Holmes would deduce.
Nowadays, the Settings/General/Cellular/Enable LTE toggle has become the most used control on the phone. Up for any sort of download or Internet activity, down for the rest of the time. And battery life has thankfully returned to what it used to be.
Too bad that SIRI is too dumb to understand a simple "disable LTE" command. Or that there's no app capable of creating configuration profiles and switching between them with a simple click. Such are the hardships of us poor iPhone owners...
And by the way, don't forget the latest iOS 6.1.3 update is out!

Same issue with me. My Iphone6 not picking LTE signal from ATT.
nothing working. tried several options like reset ...
any solution you have please share

  • Itunes and the dreaded !

hey guys, i just reformated my pc and i was able to transfer my library over replacing the new itunes folder from the fresh install with my old backup folder. This worked perfect.. now im having a problem, my music was always stored on "c->my downloads", so i put it there again. After i do that, itunes cant find my mp3s from my downloads folder. Then i went into preferences and switched the destination of my music to c->my downloads from the default (my documents->my music->itunes->etc.) so when i did this, at first i had 400 seperate mp3's in my downloads folder, now after this i have 30 seperate folders named after the artist, and now its gonna be a HARD time to get them all out of the folders and into seperate mp3's.(to be a lil more clear, i used to have 400 mp3's, now i have 30 folders named after the artist, with the 400 songs in them).
Anyone now a solution to this?
    let me know
    thanks
    kareemE

Alright, i got everything to seperate mp3's, now im having the problem of all the exclamation marks not going away, it is not finding my music in the folder im designating it to.
is there a quick solution for this?

  • Mail for Exchange and the dreaded 500 error!

    Hi
I've recently got myself a Nokia 5800 and have been trying to get Mail for Exchange working for the past week and a half.
I've read and actioned almost every suggestion that I can find on the web but still no joy!
The jist of the problem is as follows:-
    1. I created my profile which uses a secure connection and attempted to sync but no joy
    2. I downloaded the SSL certificate from our OWA server (provided by Equifax to my phone), tried again, still no joy.
    3. Next I downloaded a PDA emulator and configured activesync on it, after downloading and installing the certificate Activsync worked fine.
    4.  I can access Outlook Web access and OMA fine.
    5.  One of my colleagues has a Sony Ericson K700 phone and he has managed to get activesync working fine.
Becuase of the above I'm thinking that there are certain issues with the Nokia 5800 and Mail for exchange in an SSL environment.
I've had a scan through the logs on our OWA mail server but there are none that even indicate that my phone is getting to the server.
I work in an IT team so consider myselft as reasonably technically astute.
Here's the logfile from the phone.

  • Canopus 110 and the dreaded "Cannot connect to device"  msg

I am using Premiere Elements 2.0 with the Canopus 110 to make copies of my HI-8 and Beta tapes, and getting increasingly frustrated with the way PE 2 drops my temporary file and forces me to start the whole copy over again from the beginning every time I get the "Cannot connect to device" error. It occurred to me that maybe later versions of PE have fixed this problem. It seems simple enough -- when I press 'Stop Capture' the temporary file instantly becomes permanent, so why not when I get a momentary interruption in the signal? It would be worth $100 to me to upgrade to PE 6 or 7 or whatever the latest version is.
So, my question is directed toward others who are plagued by this irritating message: Do the later versions of PE 'save' what has already been recorded?
    Thanks!

'Stop capture on dropped frames' was already turned off. You gave me an idea, however. I will turn it ON and see if that solves my problem (if Capture must be aborted, I want PE2 to save what has already been captured).
I had not heard of WinDV and was quite impressed. Only a 38K download, and it works right out of the box! Now to try recording and see what it does when the connection is interrupted.
Two good ideas -- thanks, both of you!

  • Mac Mail and the dreaded colored spinning wheel!

    Hi:
A new issue has developed with Mac Mail on my MBP.
As of today I am consistently getting a colored spinning wheel, as though the program is trying to fetch my mail, but cannot. I have to use "Force Quit", because the program is unresponsive.
I'd be happy to paste the Apple Report data if anyone thinks this is helpful.
Any ideas as to what the problem is, or what I can do to fix it.
Its strange that the problem just "started", out of thin air!
    Thanks,
    Michael Stryker

Did you try repairing permissions and then re-testing Mail to see if the problem persists? What about disabling the "Warn before visiting a fraudulent website" option in Preferences > Security? Have you tried creating a new user account and setting up Mail there to see if the problem occurs there?
Which version of Mail does it say you have?
