790FX-GD70 + unlocked 720BE + Nvidia Drivers = Failed boot?

Good evening folks! Been quite a while since I last played in these forums (the rig in my sig is 3+ years old, and long gone.... ), but it's great to see that the tradition of a helpful community seems to have continued on in my absence.
I've didn't have any luck with a search for previous posts on the issue I'm having, but if it's a common issue and I missed a post or faq I'd be happy for a link.
So now to the meat......
I recently returned from the darkside and purchased my first AMD system since AMD dropped S939. I decided on the 790FX-GD70 paired with a 720be and some OCZ ram. Everything on the board seems to be working fine, but I ran into a snag when I loaded the 1.52 beta bios in order to unlock the 4'th core.
The core unlocks fine, and XP completes the initial load (scroll bar), but hangs on a black screen just before getting to the logon page. I immediately suspected a problem loading the vid drivers, and removed the nvidia drivers. The stock XP vid drivers allowed me to boot into windows normally which verified my original suspicions (CPU-Z confirms 4 cores). Re-installing the latest drivers causes windows to hang at the same place, and this doesn't happen without ACC unlocking the 4'th core.
Any ideas?

Cool!!! Thanks a lot for the link, not only did I get the bios file, but it also put me in the right area to check out Tony's suggested settings on this board for my memory.
edit: It might be a week or so by the time I get around to playing with this (I have other committments with the board that can be satisfied by OCing just the 3 cores for now), but I will report back if I have any luck with the 153 bios, or if an older set of drivers makes the difference.

Network problems with MSI 790FX-GD70

Hi All
I have a problem with the onboard network cards.
It only works the first time from cold boot (when the powercable is completly disconnected from the PC, and LAN cable disconnected, turn on PC and then connect LAN cable)
If I shut it it down or restart the computer, then the LAN card disconnects, eg no lights active on either the pc nor the router. But if I do the procedure described above everything works ok again.
Same problem occours with both LAN ports.
My system:
MSI 790FX-GD70
AMD 720BE
4GB Corsair 1600mhz DDR3
2x Asus HD4850 Crossfire
2x Samsung t166 320GB HD
Windows XP SP3
Tried 3 different routers but all with the same error. So everything points towards the motherboard.

Man.. is it me, or have there been like 6-7 people coming up with similar LAN issues on this board? I've never known an onboard NIC to have issues.

Fails to boot...sometimes 790fx-gd70

This rig is a couple years old and I just installed a new hdd, new ram, and windows 7. The problem is that it won't boot the first time I try, but after I power it off, unplug, and then discharge the electricity...it comes up every time. I have a 790fx-gd70 and I added all of this stuff (mainly because I wanted too) because I was doing something similar before. I would get to the boot screen and then either hang on auto-detecting sata 2 (cd burner) or go on and be fine. Sometimes it would just freeze at the desktop, so I thought it might be the hdd going bad or the ram. All of my temps are good and to my knowledge everything is hooked up correctly.
I read a couple articles saying it might be the ram but its brand new and the same speed as what was in there previously. Please help

That part can't be the memory, it must be a powersupply problems, else it would also start without unplugging the PSU.
And the latest Phenom should do 4x 1333 these days.
My money is on the powersupply, as it has bogus numbers for something that's rated 850W

I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Boot Camp. There's a Boot Camp Support Community where everybody uses Boot Camp. You should also post this question there.

790FX-GD70 not Booting, FF code

Hello, new to the forum... I signed up on here because I am having a rather difficult time with my MSI motherboard; I haven't been able to find any help elsewhere. I put together a machine using the MSI 790FX-GD70 socket AM3 board (not winki ed.) and a Phenom-II X6, the 1090T. Here is the full configuration:

2x4GB (8GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600 RAM
ATI FirePro V5700 512MB (2x) *these do not require aux power

This setup was working fine when I first assembled it around a month ago, but since the motherboard has been giving me the "FF" code and will not POST. The only way I can get the board to POST and boot the OS is to clear the CMOS and strike F2 to load defaults. I am able to enter and access the BIOS (and update it) but if I change or save any settings the motherboard will not POST and will display FF code again. If I clear the CMOS and strike F2 the board will POST, boot Windows, and work just fine without crashing--but if I restart the computer or shut it down properly the same thing occurs and I must clear CMOS again in order for it to work. This is very frustrating...
At this point I have switched CMOS batteries, tried a different PSU, taken one of the graphics cards out, and used only a single stick of RAM. I have also tried a different 1333mhz module and flashed the BIOS to the latest version without error. Nothing has fixed the problem and I am getting the hint that the board could be toast. When I power on the board, the FF code displays, the HDD LED flashes once, and then the FF code quickly returns and it hangs with no video to the monitor. All of the board's other LEDs are ON but nothing happens until the CMOS is cleared. This is very bizarre to me and I've never had a board that just stopped working. I am not trying to OC anything (dial is disabled and OFF) and all of the other hardware tests good. The computer has worked perfectly fine before so I can't guess as to why it has suddenly become problematic. It still works, but only after clearing CMOS and using F2.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this as I am out of ideas... thanks in advance for any support.

I think you are of the mistaken impression that we are MSI. This is a user to user forum and run by users like you--not MSI employees. We are all volunteers including the Mods and the Admin. None are paid or work for MSI. There are a few MSI employees that come in here but they do not read the forums very often and post even more rarely. M-Flash and Live Update are official MSI products. The MSI HQ Forum Flasher is a product of these forums, specifically Svet and tested by the other Mods--the USB Forum Flasher is not part of MSI. The flasher though only supports MSI products and was designed as such. The issue with LU and M-flash is, one, LU flashes within the Windows environment and that is a very dangerous practice, and two, M-flash has the ability to flash your BIOS with any file---you could well end up with your BIOS flashed with a document or Mp3 file. Originally, the forum flasher was developed as a very safe means of flashing the BIOS and to avoid the issues using LU. It is also far safer than using M-Flash as the forum flasher has many checks and safety measures built in.

Unable to install NVIDIA drivers on Windows 8 (Boot Camp)

I'm running Windows 8 on a secondary partition on my MacBook Pro (17-inch, 2009).
I have, in the past, been able to successfully install Windows 8 on a second partition on this mac and get everything working, including all of my device drivers. I had to erase that partition, though, so I no longer have that installation.
I've installed Windows 8 again, but I'm not able to get my NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT or 9400M graphics drivers to install!
First of all, I tried installing both 5.0.5033 and 5.1.5621 support software. After a lot of hassle, I got 5.1.5621 to install, but only through the BootCamp\Drivers\Apple\BootCamp.msi file, not through the BootCamp\setup.exe file (the setup.exe tells me that this version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model).
When I install the drivers that way, they don't install the NVIDIA drivers.
Next, I've gone directly to the NVIDIA drivers folder inside the support software, and tried to install them from there. i've also downloaded newer versions of the NVIDIA drivers from their website, and with all versions of the NVIDIA drivers, I've had to go through a huge hassle to get them to go to the setup wizard (instead of telling me there's no compatible hardware).
Then, I managed to get them to start installing, but - after Windows has me confirm that I really want to install the driver, despite it's signature - the screen invariably goes black, and my computer shuts down instantly, in what I can only assume is a kernel panic.
This is incredibly frustrating, and I don't know what to do about it. I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem. Can anyone help me?

BC 5.x drivers will cause problems. Have you considered using 4.0.4033 version. If your previous W8 installation continued to use BC 4.0.4033 drivers, they would work. Do you have the exact versions of drivers that you had on your previous W8 installation?

HP EVNY 800-060 won't boot after NVIDIA drivers were uninstalled

Here's my setup/things I've changed since I bought this machine.
I took the NVIDIA graphics card out and replaced it with an AMD R9 290X.
I added a Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD.
I installed Windows 8.1 to the new hard drive (with my own personal key) and made it the main drive.
I installed the AMD drivers.
~1 year passes.
I've been having graphics card problems and I think it has to do with the NVIDIA drivers that were bundled as part of the driver package for this machine. I uninstall them.
Bam, computer won't boot. It gets to the Windows 8 logo with their loading dot circle below it, then the screen goes black. I can move the mouse around but it disappears and reappears in the center of the screen every few seconds.
I boot into system recovery, run a diagnostic. It ends quickly saying that it can't fix the problem, insert Windows disk. I checked the log file, it says "a hard drive could not be detected". I can run through the command prompt and execute files on the drive that can't "be detected", so it's clearly there and working fine.
I'm having tons of fun finding a repair disk on the internet to download and burn from another computer (thanks, Microsoft).
Any tips? I'm considering testing the aerodynamics of this tower soon.

When I installed the driver package from HP, it came with the NVIDIA drivers. I let them install, then ignored them because they could see there was no NVIDIA card anymore.
1 year passes.
I'm having graphics trouble, so I uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers to see if they are the problem. Now the computer won't boot. All I did was uninstall those drivers, and now the PC doesn't see an OS on the drive.
It's still there. I can start the computer's system recovery and browse through the file system, so the disk is still there.
The drivers are the issue because uninstalling them made my PC not boot. Why? How? What do the graphics drivers even have to do with booting?
Edit: Ran chkdsk, everything works, no bad sectors.

When I start the comp, the MSI logo appears, then onto the Windows XP loading screen, and when it's supposed to go to the Windows login page my screen goes blank. This only happens when I try to start up Windows normally but I can view everything in Safe Mode.
I'm a huge noob at this so please bear with me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

790FX-GD70 LAN Problems

Hello all;
I recently purchased a bunch of components on NCIX, and assembled the computer together, and everything is working extremely well - minus the LAN connections. I've never seen the LEDs light up, and all I'm ever getting in the windows properties is a network cable unplugged message in the adapter settings. I HAVE read the other postings on this board and don't think I have been helped.
I am running Windows 7 (64bit)
790FX-GD70 w/ Phenom II 955 (3.2GHz)
2x4GB Mushkin Stiletto 16000 (1333) DDR3 Ram (Upper end but not overclocked)
2x1GB Asus EAH5450 Silent Video Cards in Software Crossfire (Works great and have had no issues)
ModXStream 700w PS
Antec 900 Case (with all fans so it has adequate cooling)
I also have set up two RAID 0s (may have been overkill) But I have two SataII 250GB hard drives for the OS drive (allows me to upgrade to a SSD in future) and 2 2TB Green Drives for Data, Movies, Music, etc.
ANYWAY, everything was installed and working perfectly, but have got no response from the LAN, so a wireless stick was installed on the front bus.
I've only ever used the drivers from the site, but MAY have originally installed the disc drivers for the MOBO.
I have tried turning off the LAN in BIOS, uninstalling and reinstalling and returning on the LAN (along with doing the above with and without the cable installed) in every order and with every driver I could find. (The one on the site didn't work- so I tried MSI's Liveupdate and it found a different one - tried installing and running THAT one with the above - nothing). I've received no response from the LAN and even less from the MSI help/email system.
I've tried everything I can think of except:
a) I will try the above mentioned in SafeMode
b) I searched for these elusive REALTEK drivers that saved someone else, but I don't appear to be able to access them and viewing just the information I'd need to sign up for
c) I may try stripping all drivers off and retrying with the LAN off (in bios) since it was ON during windows install, but I've uninstalled every lan driver and deleted the device only to reinstall with the (newest MSI) drivers before turning it on SOO many times it makes my head hurt.
OH, also the cable is CAT6 (50ft) and worked screamingly well for the last computer I had hooked up here, so there should be zero issues with firewalls or router/modem configurations (though I've looked)
I've included everything I can think of, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to move a few TB of data off a main computer to mine, and it's taking a lifetime through the wireless. Thanks for any help/comments you can offer.

Alright - Thanks to all readers so far - I've been trying to diagnose this problem for some time and put in a lot of time yesterday to no positive result.
Because I was on a computer all day, I was able to do updates with what I was thinking, and different things as they came up - but they weren't always legible/comprehensible so I will try to explain everything better and condensed for any new readers.
New Computer Parts:

Original Installation:
Had no issues, but installed off the supplied CDs, then updated to the MSI mobo drivers.
I had the smaller drives running on Raid Array 1 (boot) so I can in future upgrade to a SSD and the two Larger drives as Raid Array 2 for a nice and large music/games/iso/Video drive
I originally tried screwing with it a bit, some reinstalls, then got fed up thinking the MSI email thing will solve it and started installing games, norton and the like. This lead to comment about additional uninstalls disabling norton, windows and anything I could find - This was not ORIGINALLY an issue, but came to be in later installations (Sorry for the confusion).
This computer originally had dual screens, but has now been upgraded to a Plasma Widescreen (it was my plan to have this as a media/gaming computer)
Through all driver installations, I've found the LAN LEDs light up in Startup, Windows goes to its loading screen, then to a blank screen (juuust before windows finishes loading) and then to windows - On the blank screen the LEDs turn off and stay off for the remainder of the PC being on. This is ALSO the case at the router. Light is on until windows hits and remains off.
Therefore I tried every possible combination of uninstalling the router driver, turning the LAN off in BIOS, installing with and without the LAN plugged in, enabling in BIOS, and then booting windows (with and without the LAN plugged in).
Prior to this build, there was a computer in the same case, on a much, much older board that utilized the cable and everything went extremely smoothly (Win7 64 bit).
Nothing has been OCd, and there are no strange settings that I can see on the BIOS (though I will post my BIOS settings shortly).
Other installation options have been using the installation wizard in and out of safemode, using the "silent install" in and out of safe mode, and once agaion all installation have been done with and without disabling the LAN in the BIOS and reenabling it after.
What shows up is under the Network Adapters is:
"Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller"
"Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller #2"
(This board has 2 Gigabit Ports and yes I've always been trying both)
Both say they're working correctly, installed with the most recent drivers, and despite my error in one post, say 7.41.216.2011 (a 2/16/2011 update-most recent)
It also says (on both) that a cable is just missing, but it has been recently used on a different system and I can see the lights on the PC and router.
In the mobo manual the LEDS can be explained as such:
L-Yellow-Off -LAN not established
-On S.S -LAN link established
-On pulse -Communicating with another computer on the LAN
R-Green-Off -10Mbit/s
-On -100Mbit/s
-Orange-On- -1000Mbit/s
So I am getting a pulsing Yellow and an Orange (on) meaning a thinking Gigabit connection, good. -> Until Windows Loads
Now, during windows installation ( I believe this is typical) it doesn't pick up the BIOS-configured RAID array as a drive until you install the driver (in the windows setup). So I had to do that on every installation, until it picks up the drive, and installation resumes. I do not know if the same conflict exists with Ubuntu, but it sure appears that that is the case as it will not pick up the hard drives. After booting linux, the PC will not re recognize the harddrives until a COLD boot is performed (not recognizing the drives on reset had me a little freaked out for a bit).
Back to linux, I tried my version of 10.10, the admin's version, and an above listed ~8.2 Golden Heron??? Version of Ubuntu. When BOTH the v10s were loaded, it appeared to be loading just fine, with the Ubuntu logo and progress bar/balls, then the black screen, and then it wouldn't come back. The start up sound would activate, but I could not receive any visual. I originally thought this MAY have had something to do with the fact that I'm using a Plasma TV through the HDMI connection, but if the load up screen showed up, I can't understand why it would flake out.
Anyway, to cover all bases, I then tried the v8 cd, and it booted (with a fair share of ugly flickering pre load). No hard drives, but it DID allow me to check out the Connections - and it picked out the same thing, same name, same location, cable missing and couldn't get it to work.
Now at this point a question was asked about my PSU as drives were "falling out" so I supplied specs:

So I shouldn't have an issue with 4 drives, 1 DVD, and 2 sticks of ram.
At this point, I was getting tired and frustrated and tried some more Safe mode possibilities and Reinstalls, and in my frustration/orvertiredness I pulled off all ATI drivers that I thought MAY be conflicting (to install LAN FIRST) such as a RAID controller (stupid) and the Crossfire drivers (thought maybe PCI bus was overloaded or in conflict if the LAN is on the same bus? - I was overtired) Anyway, thinking I could get back into windows safe mode was a little optimistic and I had to settle for Windows repair (oh joy) and I COULDNT get the raid drivers to be recognized again - Found out later that the USB drive I was using to move drivers with had some issues with corruption..ANYWAY in the windows repair/select driver window I plugged in a 500G external and did the ol' Ctrl C Ctrl P and copied everything I needed on the raid array and blanked it to reinstall windows.
Now silly sleep deprived me couldnt get the main ATI driver to load (corrupt files and didn't realize at the time) and the ATI mobo driver didn't install, so I used the CD, but then I was just replicating the above test,as I installed the LAN drivers post ATI Mobo drivers (still don't know why I did that). Redownloaded newest drivers onto the external, and went to bed.
Anyway, on to today, reblanked the drive, installed windows WITH LAN OFF in BIOS, installed Windows again, installed LAN and reenabled in BIOS to the same results. Did a repair installation, with it enabled and plugged in, same results.
Post ANY installation, as soon as the LAN is enabled (if it isn't already) a message pops in the bottom right saying Drivers were installed correctly.
If it is installed with LAN off, a message pops up saying "The Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable."
But once, the LAN is enabled, on Windows boot it once again says it was installed correctly, but doesn't have a cable.
Right now I'm sitting with a computer with a fresh Win 7-64 install and LAN drivers, and I will try installing the mobo drivers and reinstalling the LAN again (if nothing works) but I'm fresh out of ideas. I'll see what I can hammer out in Linux too, but it appears so far that we're getting the same results (connected but no cable).
Anyway thanks for reading my novel, and once again, any help would be appreciated.

790FX-GD70, upgrade bios to 1.7 and now raid 5 hangs.

Here are my system specs:
mobo: 790fx-gd70
cpu: quad 955 at stock
ram: gskill trident 6gb of ddr3-1600 8-8-8-21
video: xfx 4850/512 in CF
on j-micron: 2x 320g wd3200jb western digitals for raid 0 (scratch disk)
on amd raid: 4x500gb in raid 5 (data), 2x73g raid 0 (boot)
So back when I was running bios 1.4 everything works fine. I tested it and it works fine up to 1.6. So the system did work.
About two months ago, one of the 500g drives takes a poop. I send it off to rma, I get a new one back. I install it and tell the raid it is a hotspare. The raid rebuilds and life goes on. Then one month ago I try to upgrade to 1.7 so I can run windows 7. No luck. The bios hangs on the amd raid, but if I pull that hotspare/rebuild drive, it works. Call tech support. They give me 1.8beta. I try it, board cooks. No post. Rma the board. I get the board back, drop the bios back to 1.6, install xp, everything works. Jump to 1.7, same issue. Then I delete the raid config, and build a 3x500 without the problem drive. Everything works. Win7 screams, life goes on.
I tested the drive with data life guard, no problems. no smart errors. nothing. I write zeros to the drive in hopes it is a bad partition table or something. No luck.
Western digital and I agree that the problem is not the drive. The drive works fine when you downgrade the bios. Works fine with 1.7 if you turn off the raid and map it as ide.
What have I not thought of?

Fredirk: Scratch....I guess it is a reference to the old photoshop days when you would use a separate disk to hold the swap file and the files you were editing separate from the boot drive. I run torrents, irc, vmware, and keep raw dv there. The raid 5 is for anything I want to save, so it is not to much of a waste. Disks fail. I used to run seagate, but after sending back three 1tb drives to RMA I gave up on them. I transfer over 4tb per month over the internet, so that is a lot of disk io.
Hans: The tech support at MSI told me it was needed when I called them after seven would not install the first time on 1.4 (what mine shipped with). It wouldn't be the first time they were wrong. If it works for you the question is: Do you run raid? How is our setup different? 32bit or 64bit? Does your raptor run off the jmicron or the sb750? What is your mode: ide, raid, ahci?

790FX-GD70 Memory Issue

I had 4 GB of OCZ AMD Black Edition (8-8-8-24) memory in Dimm1 and Dimm2 which worked fine. I recently purchased 4 more GBs of Corsair memory and installed it. But after the system would not post and the mother board display would just flash FF. Thought the memory was bad and exchanged it for 4 GB of Patriot Memory (8-9-8-24) but had the same issue. Note the speeds on all memory were the same. OCZ and Patriot work fine by themselves in Dimm 1 and 2. I took one stick of memory and tested it out in each of the slots and the system would not boot/post when I had a stick in Dimm 4. Does anyone know of any issues with this board and memory? The memory also reads at 1033 in the bios but the box for the mem states 1600. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, unrelated to this post, I am having an issue with windows server 2008 r2 on my raid setup. It sees the raid after I load drivers from MSI.com but after the last step of the install it gives me a message saying that it couldn't save settings and I need to restart the installer. After which it says that again.

Okay heres a list of things to remember about mobos and ram:
Motherboards only support certain types and certain rated speeds, most don't support 1600 without overclocking the ram, the board, and the processor.
The Dimm4 slot is the Last slot in the list, your PC won't ever boot with just one stick in the 4th slot.
Also make sure your mobo supports the amount of memory you want to add, some only support up to 16GB or less.
Brand doesn't really matter (though it is better to have tested brand name dual channel kits) but specs do.
Though some memory just doesn't play nice with each other and in this setting, to me, OCZ and corsair don't sound like they are playing nice together. Though it might work just fine - you just need to get the settings right.

As for buying ram, I don't know where you are located but I use www.newegg.com and I got 8GB of G.skill dual channel kit value ram (2x 4GB) for 80-90 bucks. Slap one in dimm1 and the other in dimm3 and you got 8GB!
Come to think of it, try testing your ram like this: 1 corsair in dimm1, 1 corsair in dimm3, 1 ocz in dimm2 and 1 ocz in dimm4 & don't forget to set the timings otherwise it just won't work. (Have to overclock to run 1600 ram)
Another note is that usually when AMD calls something "Black Edition" that means it has been overclocked at the factory, so unless you have some more of the same kind of ram I am betting it won't be as stable as it can be.

Can't get my OCZ3P1333LVAM4GK stable on my 790FX-GD70 @ 1333MHz

After searching for the correct settings on the internet without descent results I thought it would be best to post my problem here.
I recently build a new system with these specs:
MSI 790FX-GD70 (bios v1.3)
AMD Phenom II 955BE

The problem is as soon as I change my settings in the bios for 1333Mhz the system becomes unstable and Windows 7 RC won't even boot.
Here is what I did:
I've changed the FSB/DRM Ration to 1:3.33 so the adjusted DRAM Frequency was 1333MHz
Next I've changed the DRAM Voltage to 1.65V (should be correct according to the OCZ website)
After that I entered the Advance DRAM Configuration and changed CAS, TRCD, TRP and TRAS to 7,7,7,20 according OCZ's website and left the rest on "auto", I assume this is where it went wrong since a lot of settings are still default (auto)..
Could anybody help me with the right settings, would be a shame if let it run @ 1066MHz
Before I bought the mainboard MSI costumer service told me OCZ memory should run smooth @ 1333MHz.. so PLZ help me out

Setting from 1T to 2T can give better stability. I have the 720BE and am OverClocked with a higher CPU core voltage (1.500v), yours shows 0.968v? If it continues you might want to do research on your 955BE and consider even slight Overclocking. Do not just start changing settings and voltages if you are not knowledgable because of the problems just changing things can do, but with knowledge from Reviews on the Board, Memory and CPU you can get different results. You seem to have OverClock memory in the 7's. Looking up your sticks they do show to be 1333 1.65v and designed for AMD.

NVidia drivers cause system instability

Hello,
I recently purchased an MSI 865 Neo2 FIS2R mother board. Here is how
I have it configured:
o Power Supply - FSP400-60PFN 400W (3.3V/28A, 5V/40A, 12V/15A, 5VSB/2A,
-5V/0.3A, -12V, 0.8A)
o Processor - 2.8GHz P4
o RAM - 2 512MB PC3200 Kingston HyperX CL2
o RAID 0 - 2 Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus SATA drives.
o Video - Aopen GF3Ti500
o Primary IDE Master - TDK Indi DVD 440N
o Secondary IDE Slave - 56X CDROM Drive
o Floppy Drive
I installed Windows XP on the RAID without incident. When I tried to
install the NVidia display drivers (45.23), the system became
unstable. Specifically here is what I noticed:
o The black Windows start-up screen with the blue progress bar would
flicker between black & blue around the same spot each time.
o From the login screen, when I chose my account, it would
briefly show my desktop and then I would hear the relays in my monitor
click, the screen go black, a second click and my screen would be fine
again.
o If I used the display properties control panel and chose the
advanced option, again, click, blackness, click, everything's OK.
o I noticed that when I tried to use Window's Media player to play a
CD, it would crash during the 2nd song. It would crash sooner and
sooner each time I restarted it until it was crashing as soon as I
started it (assuming I didn't reboot). After than IE would crash,
Windows Explorer might crash or the system might spontaneously reboot.
o After rebooting, the system would be less stable, with IE or Windows
explorer crashing sooner than before (without even using Media Player).
This would continue to get worse (across re-boots) until it would
start crashing while loading Windows XP.
MAT and DOT are in the default setting and I have not tried adjusting
any voltages, etc.
If I booted in safe mode and uninstalled the display driver, everything
would return to normal and the system would run fine. I checked the
IRQs to make sure that wasn't a problem. I noticed a device from the
Intel Chipset and the VGA card were both sharing IRQ 16. I don't know
much about this (including how to change an IRQ) so I tried disabling
the Intel device (it dealt with the USB and I have no USB devices
currently attached). The system didn't seem to mind having that device
disabled. I reinstalled the display drivers, but the system behaved
exactly the same.
I also tried stepping down to the 44.03 version of the drivers but
they actually made the system worse (my screen split in half and
things turned purple!).
I also tried swapping between the GF3Ti500 and a GeForce4 MMX 440 The
only difference is that while starting windows, the monitor would
briefly go black instead of flickering between black and blue. Both
cards run fine in my old machine, an MSI NForce mobo, using the
45.23 drivers.
Since the problems usually started when I was using Media Player, I
tried disabling the sound device. The system seemed to run fine (with
the exception of the monitor clicking). I could play movies with the
media player, browse with IE, etc. with no crashes. I couldn't find
any resources conflicts between the sound and the vga card.
Windows trouble shooter suggested updating the mobo BIOS. I was
previously running 1.3. I tried updating to 1.7. The reflash seemed
to go fine. But when I rebooted, all I got was a black screen (no
beep). I looked at the D-Bracket and noticed that it was stuck on the
RTC test. I don't think that's the problem. The next step is
initialization of the video system. I tried the emergency recovery
procedure (with the 1.7 BIOS). It worked, but still the screen
remained black, stuck on the same test.
How do I get (either) video card to work? And should I just leave the
system flashed to 1.7, or try to use the emergency recovery program to
get back to 1.3?

Hey Guys. Thanks for the help. I don't doubt that the NVidia drivers are fine, they're just part of the puzzle. Just to be sure, I got a new PSU. Here are it's specs:
+5V/40A, +12V/24A, +3.3V/32A, -5V/-0.5A, -12V/1.0A, +5V SB/2A, max load 530W.
As I mentioned earlier, I had tried updating the BIOS to 1.7, after which it sticks on the RTC test (see my original post for details). After installing the new PSU, it still stuck on the RTC test. I tried reflashing to 1.3, but now the memory test is failing. Does that seem right? The RTC test is after the memory test, so why should reflashing to 1.3 cause a memory failure? I'm assuming the reflash didn't work correctly. If I can get it to work (fingers crossed) I'll let you know what happens.

New system locks up when not under load 790fx-gd70

My system freezes up. Mouse stops moving (no blue screen). I have not overclocked anything. I replaced my stable motherboard, processor and memory with an upgrade. The system is not stable. I have tested the memory, disabled the onboard sound card, upgraded to the latest drivers and firmware. I now suspect the feature that shares system memory with the video card. How to I stop System Memory from being shared with my video card?
I can see that 1.7GB of my system memory has been assigned over to add to my 256MB video memory, but don't see any way to stop it!

This board apparently has an incompatibility with my video card. I threw in an old ATI x300SE PCI-E and have not experienced the lock ups. This makes the brand choice clear for a new video card. nvidia lovers beware.

Memory Upgrade on my 790FX-GD70 (MS-7577) Board

Hi, I'm new on here and a sliver surfer, so please be gentle with me. I've been building computers for a few years now, I started back in 2001 when I had to retire from work because of medical problems (I am confined to a wheelchair) instead of letting it get me down I started to read books on building my own PC. I have built 6 in that time and all are still working well, however, my knowledge is still limited.
So I have a question I would like to ask you, I've been trying to upgrade the memory on my motherboard a 790FX-GD70 board. From Corsair Dominator DDR3 Part No TW3X4G16009D 4Gb, X2 2Gb Modules 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1.8 volts ver1.1. To Corsair XMS3 DDR3 Part No: CMX16GX3M2A1333C9 16Gb, 2X8Gb Modules 1333MHz 9-9-9-24 1.50volts ver8.21. But I have had a problem, when I install 1 X 8Gb module into slot 1 the PC seems to run fine, but when I install the second 8Gb module into slot 2 my system is very unstable and I get the blue screen of death.
I have been advised that the maximum Gb per dimm slot is 4Gb is that correct? or is it my BIOS that needs updating? if so that is something that I will not try myself I will have to get an expert in to help with that.
Please can anyone help me.

I have gone through what you suggested but I had no luck running the 16GB (2X8GB Modules). So I went out today and I bought from my local PC Store a new kit of 16GB of DDR3 16GB (4X4GB Modules) 1600MHz and clocked them at 1333MHZ and set the voltage to 1.65, booted up my system and all's fine. The system has been running all afternoon and it is now stable.
Thank you all for your help in resolving this issue for me, it has saved me a lot of time messing around.
