7950 twin frozr iii running hot? should i rma?

I noticed my video card after having it a while is now 1) much louder and 2) is running idle around 55-60c. I also noticed a game ive been playing (FFXIV) ive gotten far more moments of freezing or horrible FPS drops.
Im running Windows 8.1 (this started back when i was on windows 7) and the case is pretty well vented. This has only come up now after owning it for quite some time (nearly a year i think). Is this just normal for this card to be so hot or should i be worried and RMA it. As much as i dont want to be without my gaming rig, id rather not risk it if something is wrong.

seem to be about 71-72C (with the usage fluctuating like crazy for a while at first then stabilizing at 99%). Also like to note that while playing a game last night i had it flash and the display driver fail then recover (not sure if thats relevant to it or not)
I also notice even after the program has been off for a bit, the card is still saying its under heavy load 80-99% and about 65C when there has been nothing running,

  • 7950 twin frozr iii running under load with nothing going on?

For some reason (and randomly it seems) my GPU load will be nearly maxed and heating up the gpu for no reason. I had left it sitting as i went to the store shortly after turning it on and it was running around 80-95%~ load when all that was going was skype in the background along with MSI afterburner and AMD catalyst. Why would it randomly do this?

Can you follow this >>Posting Guide<< please. Make sure you provide enough detail.
Try removing drivers once again, but this time use >>Driver Fusion<< while in safe mode, then reboot and install fresh drivers from AMD (don't look on MSI's for GPU drivers). Also uninstall Afterburner.
If your HDD is quite big, are you able to create new partition and install fresh Windows on it/or different HDD where OS is not installed? So you don't remove all the current drivers etc, we want just fresh windows on new partition to see if it's something messed up with OS.

  • Information about the Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr III

Hi, I want to change my R5770 to a Radeon HD 7950. I came across a lot of review and found the Twin Frozr III model from MSI really interesting. But, it seems that I can't buy it as no store as them.
Does anyone know when they'll be available (in US / Canada)? I'm looking forward to buy one as the cooler seems to be a great quality one.
    Thank for your time!

My advice is wait till you see them at newegg. Nobody here can tell you when they will be available as nobody here has that kind of information. We don' have anything at all to do with MSI marketing.

  • 7950 Twin frozr III OC Bios

I am having weird issues with my card and hoping a the latest BIOS will fix it. My card is refusing to run at stock clock speeds. When I run a game it is choppy. Upon logging it with Afterburner the clock speed will ramp to 960 then the screen will flash black and it will clock down to 300 mhz. I have tried the latest Catalyst drivers both beta and non-beta and it still refuses to play.

  • MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III New Vbios Request

    Hello,
I have some problems with my system, which no one seems to know how to fix, and one of the things I haven't tried yet is a new vbios.
I've never done nothing of the sort previously, so can you leave me a brief explanation of what to do?
I also don't know what GOP / UEFI means...
GPU Model: MSI R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE
    Serial Number: 602-V276-18SB1211086192
Current BIOS Version (according to GPU-Z): 015.024.000.001.001496 (113-C3864000-X00)
Edit: Current vbios dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/de7hg0u2eg4sbvi/Tahiti.rom

Never again bump a thread please: >>Please read and comply with the Forum Rules.<<
A GOP/UEFI vbios allows UEFI Fastboot with Win8. You are currently using an up to date legacy vbios (without GOP support). You can try the GOP version but I doubt that it will help with your problem. Most likely card is or psu is faulty like Svet already told you. Also OC/voltage abilities depend on the individual sample. No magic vbios can make your card perform like you read in some reviews if it proves to be not such lucky draw.
    Use the attached.
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (1a0.rar) and put the included file (TV276MH.1A0) on that stick.
Rename TV276MH.1A0 to 1A0.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 1A0.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • Should I get an MSI GTX 560 Ti 448 Twin Frozr III?

I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card and obviously I'm looking to get one that'll go well together with Premiere (CS 5.5). For now, I've set my sights on the MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores Twin Frozr III 1280 MB. I'm especially attracted to this card, as from my research it should be particularly quiet in desktop use, which is essential to me. Would this be a good choice, or should I be looking at GTX 570 for instance, or a card with more memory?

    Arve,
I appreciate the effective and quiet cooling provided by MSI's non-reference designs. I don't have the exact card you mention, but have a system with a MSI GTX 460 Hawk (twin fans, similar to the Frozr design) and it performs WAY quieter than the GTX 260 reference card I had prior to that. I would not be worried at all regarding noise and cooling with 120mm case fans. When comparing how much air 120mm fans can move to clear video card (and CPU) heat from your case vs. the reference GTX cards pushing air through a VERY tiny space, you can expect quieter and more effective cooling with the Frozer. The only possible caveat that I can think of with the Frozr is that you need at lease 1/2" of space in front of both fans so that air can easily enter the fans. If you have a motherboard / PCIe situation where you need to put a card immediately next to the Frozr, then you should go with a reference design; I suspect that gamers wanting 2, 3, or even 4 video cards running in SLI has a lot to do with why the various "big fan" designs are not more common in the market.
Additional to the cooling subject being discussed so far, there is another Newegg listed GTX 560Ti listed with less cores but 2GB of video RAM. Depending on if you ever edit anything with large frame needs such as large photos in video slide shows or RED 4k, etc., possibly the larger video buffer would be more advantageous to you system than the one you mention above that has a slightly higher core count.

  • MSI R7950 Twin Frozr III Temp Issues

I have been having issues with my video card (MSI R7950 Twin Frozr III) under load and previously even while  idle with temperatures being way higher than they should be. Browsed many forums and it was suggested that I change the thermal paste, which fixed part of the issue (The video card under "normal" load went from 95C to 75-84C while at 90 to 100% load the temperatures rises back up to the 90s). Before changing the thermal paste, the idle temperatures were around 60, under regular load a little over 90 as stated previously.
The video card runs perfectly otherwise which has me thinking it's most likely a problem related to the heatsink and cooler itself.
I'd personally rather avoid RMA if possible so my question is, is it possible for a cooler/heatsink to cause such a high temperature issue and if so, would purchasing an aftermarket cooler fix the problem or could there be other issues leading to the high temperatures other than the cooler/heatsink itself?
    Thank you for your time.

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit.
    Catalyst 12.4

After flashing to this vbios, I seem to have gained performance, but the card also seems to be running a bit more hot which could be affected by me being in a different area in the game or slightly higher temperature in my room around the computer, etc.
I haven't tried changing drivers lately, had before when I first was faced with this temperature problem (Have been busy for a while and never bothered trying to figure the issue or try reapplying thermal paste to see if it would fix it until I got time for it recently). I tried both AMD's official drivers, the drivers I had at the time for my 4890 as well and the MSI auto-update software, none of which seemed to fix the heat problem.
If you believe I should try drivers now and see if it can fix the problem once again I don't mind trying.

  • MSI nVidia GTX 560ti Twin frozr III loss of output

    Hi folks,
I recently needed my monitor to test another rig and upon plugging it back in I discovered my MSI nVidia GTX 560ti Twin frozr III no longer has video output, I have tried different outputs, different cables, different displays and different motherboard slots to no avail. Had a search around and couldn't find any other instances of this. The card is 2 years old now but has always functioned perfectly (apart from the well publicised memory temperature problem). Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

    Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3
    Thermatake 750W Evo_blue 2.0
I'm assuming drives and case aren't the issue so not listing them.

The card is 2 years old, but how long wasn't it used for and did you ever had any problems with it?
First of all, I would reset CMOS >>Clear CMOS Guide<< so all the OC is removed (write down settings of CPU OC if you want to use it later on).
Then (I don't know Asus boards) would look through the BIOS if it recognises the card. Possible you should get rid of the possible dust in PCIe slot?
Also: while card is plugged in, run computer and: try all the video ports, even those on motherboard (maybe board doesn't recognise the card and wants to run integrated gpu if there is any).
Last but not least: ask a friend/colleague if you can test your card in their computer. Best if it would be different brand of motherboard, and power supply. Possibly power supply is screwed up somewhere (broken connection)and doesn't deliver enough power to give output.
Does the card start up when you run the PC (fans of the card)?

I tried various drivers on my two PCs, from one that comes with the video card to the 295.73 driver, and each time the same warning on device manager. Can anyone help solve this or may I do a RMA to MSI?

You sure your PSU has enough amps on the 12V rail and you connected the PCIE power connectors properly ?
Have you checked your Motherboard's BIOS revisions for updates regarding the later video cards ?
Your PCIE Bus interface should be 2.0 X 16. Have you reseated the card properly and disabled the on board graphics in your BIOS ?
My PSU is a SevenTeam 750ZAF with 750W. I used it to do SLI of my 9800GTX+ in the other computer and never had problems with it. I doubt that this could be my problem.
The GA-EP43-DS3L already has the ultimate BIOS and I did the update on the GA-A75M-D2H BIOS. Nothing new, the problem persist.
Anyone of my boards does not support PCI-Express 2.0 but this is not a requisites for  work of the video board like said the MSI page:
    http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N560GTX-448-Twin-Frozr-III-Power-Edition-OC.html#?div=Feature
"PCI Express 2.0 doubles the bandwidth of previous generations of PCI express up to an astonishing 16Gb/s. This maximizes the performance of current graphics cards in today's most demanding games and applications. PCI Express 2.0 products are fully compatible with mainboards with other versions of PCI Express."

  • [Tech Help Needed] GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC Fan Stops Working

    Hello everyone.
It's extremely rare for me to have computer issues, but this time it happened.
MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC, and here's the issue:
Whenever i turn on the computer the gpu fans spin for around 5seconds and after that they stop, for now they seem fine since i'm usually idling for the 1st 30minutes or so, but when i start playing games the gpu temperatures skyrocket to around 60-70 idling  in-game and the fans just won't start working, yes the the psu cables are connected to the gpu, bla bla ( duh ). i've had the gpu for around 2years and it worked fine but all of a "sudden" the fans just seem to not work and it starts getting very high temperatures, i've read someone complaining about the same issue and he was told to replace his gpu bios with some uefi bios and he said that the uefi update solved his fan issues which were the same as mine.
Now my problem is, i've never done that "Bios Flashing" and things like that and i don't know if my Board is compatible. If it worked for that person then it should work for me since the symptoms are literally the same. I've tried uninstalling the gpu drivers completely and installed again, the issue still persists.
If it's of any reference i own the following setup:
MB : ROG Asus Crosshair IV Formula
CPU : AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE
GPU : MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC
    RAM : 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaw X 1600Mhz
PSU: Corsair GS 700 Gaming Series ( yes its more than enough and good enough )
I've literally had no problems whatsoever with my system for a few years now, and just like that the fans don't want to work, i can play games and what not, but at around 70ºC with no fans running ..... i've tried using MSI Afterburner to boost the fan speed, the fan speed setting gets set but the rpm stays at 0. i also made it to run on windows start and its still at 0 RPM.
Will the uefi bios solve my problem like it did to the other person with the exact same issue?
Thank you for your time spent reading, hopefully it will be solved.

Still no reply after 2 days, impressive support right there ... every other post that came after got replied ...
Anyway, if its also relevant about my issue :
    - Fans briefly spin after i press the power button to turn on my computer and stop right after around 3-5s and never spin again until i shutdown and power on again for the same brief spin.
    - If i force the fans on Afterburner to 90% or above ( 100% ) they spin and make unsupportable noise.
Also if its of any relevance :
    N660 TF 2GD5/OC
    S/N: 602 - V287 - 050B1302044857
At least provide me with the most up-to-date uefi/gop vbios or whatever that is, to see if it fixes my problem, otherwise recommend me a substitute cooling system that i can use ( a good one, not 3rd rated ) to replace the stock cooling in this because i don't have the money to get another card, and if i get one it won't be from msi for sure.
    Very dissapointed.
