7970 Lightning BE Fan Issue (card overheating!!!)

I have Been having issues with a MSI HD7970 Lightning BE card. at the moment the on-line retailer refuses to acknowledge the issue.
i would post pictures of the screen grabs but cannot workout how!. but you get whats going on from below information.
I have already returned the card once at my own expense , and they said they couldn't find a problem with it, apparently the overnight stress tested it with fur-mark!
i have since had it returned to me and my expense , because they didn't find it "overheated" and i have tested it again on the 2 below systems, with the results below.
of course i have returned it to them and insisted on a replacement. i will update when more news is available.
has anyone else had issues with this card?
Windows 7 x64 sp1 with all critical updates, Intel  i7 920 2.8ghz, ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard with Intel x58 chipset. AMD Catalyst 12.11, MSI AFTERBURNER v2.3.0 , MSI Kombustor v2.4.2.
As you can see the gpu is 98c and it has only been running  2min 58sec. from the graphs you can see the framerate  (top graph) becomes unstable because gpu clock rate (8Th graph) is erratic due to the card throttling back due to overheating.
You can also see that the FAN is being asked to run at 100% (6Th graph) but the fan is clearly not responding (7Th graph) as it is giving a fixed feedback speed of around 1000rpm, causing the card to overheat.  THE FAN SPEED IS NOT INCREASING OR DECREASING IT IS STAYING AROUND 1000rpm.
After Talking to the Tech Support guy who assured me that there is no problem with the card, and it is probably a compatibility problem with the Motherboard, I doubted this  (I mean this is why standards are developed/agreed right?)  But just to save a little time/effort I tried it in a newer Generation Motherboard, the result is below.
Clean install Windows 7 x64 sp1, Intel  i3 3225 3.3ghz,  GIGABYTE Z77-DS3H motherboard with INTEL z77 chipset. AMD Catalyst 12.11, MSI AFTERBURNER v2.3.0 , MSI Kombustor v2.4.2.
Unfortunately I hadn't realized it didn't grab the frame rate graph before I dismantled the machine. But you can still see the gpu is 99c and it has only been running  5min 06sec and was overheating well before that.
From the graphs you can see the gpu clock rate (7Th graph) again is erratic due to the card throttling back due to overheating.
You can also see that the FAN is being asked to run at 100% (5Th graph) but again the fan is clearly not responding (6Th graph) as it is giving a fixed feedback speed of around 1000rpm, causing the card to overheat.  THE FAN SPEED IS NOT INCREASING OR DECREASING IT IS STAYING AROUND 1000rpm.

  • Fan issues -- computer overheating?

I have a quick question. I have an iMac G5, (non iSight version). My computer has an overheating problem -- the fans will run at high speed 99% of the time and when running a large application (such as a large game like World of Warcraft, and occasionally when even doing something like watching a baseball game online) the computer puts itself to sleep to, I believe, avoid overheating. I've done some research and I think this is not an uncommon problem. I was wondering if this is something I can fix on my own by ordering parts from the DIY section, or if I have to bring it to an apple store? If I can do it, what parts would I need? Just the fan? Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Hi--
the computer puts itself to sleep to, I
    believe, avoid overheating.
You can verify this by using the Console application from your Utilities folder. Open it up and look at the log and see if you see messages like this:

The Apple Store's solution was a new logic board. Mine's a Rev. A, though, and covered by the repair extension program, as well as AppleCare, so I had no problem with them. The CPU fan for some reason was unable to cool the CPU, despite the fact that it rand at nearly 100% speed constantly.
Some people have reported that they have found the vents along the bottom of the computer have gotten clogged with pet hair or dust and that cleaning them out helped slow the fans and cool the computer. So you could look into that. Also, you might take a look at where the computer is sitting and see if something has changed that is forcing the warm air vented at the top back into the case at the bottom.
If none of those work, though, you might need to have it looked at. Whether or not the fans can be replace indivually on your iMac, though, I'm not sure. You'd need to talk to Apple to find out...

  • Problems with second 7970 Lightning Card?

    Hello
I purchased the MSI 7970 Lightning in May of last year as part of a new build.  The other components of the build that affect the running of the machine are:
    Asus P8Z77 WS Motherboard
    Intel i7 3770K CPU
    16GB Mushkin Ram (991991)
    Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Cooler
    Samsung 830 SSD x2
    Samsung Spinpoint F2 1TB HD
    Corsair AX850 PSU
    Windows 7 Home Premium
USB 3.0 PCIe card with 2 internal and 2 external sockets
    Sony CD Drive
With buying such high end products I thought I would have an easy hassle free build as I have built computers before with only one problem build that resulted from a faulty stick of memory.  I didn't intend to overclock at all initially and intended but wanted the option to if I needed to in the future.
How wrong was I?  The first Lightning card was faulty and would crash before it finished the Kombuster benchmark.  The system also suffered from continual 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' stutters and occasional crashes even on the desktop.  I contacted the merchant I purchased it from and arranged a return.  It took a few weeks but I did eventually receive a replacement card through MSI.
Excuse the pun, but Lightning couldn't strike twice I thought, and the next card would work.  However, I still got the 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' reports and the occasional crashes.  This card did at least complete the benchmark so I kept it and put it down to driver issues.
In my quest to resolve the issue I have tried the following:
I trawled the internet looking for probable causes and have tweaked the motherboard bios according to what was recommended on Asus forums to no avail.
I have downloaded the latest bios for the motherboard
I have used the most stable settings recommended in bios so as to cause least stress on a non-overclocked CPU
I have set up my SSD's in non-raid as I read Lucid Virtu MVP doesn't like that
I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 each time I downloaded new drivers for the graphics card so that there could be no old files affecting the driver's operation
I have used graphics drivers from the MSI site for the 7970 and also from AMD without success
I have run Memtest which came up with no errors.
I have also tried using just 8GB of the RAM in various configurations on the off-chance it was a faulty stick despite the Memtest result.
I don't have limitless hours to spend trying to rectify problems with my computer.  I tend to work on it when I take a holiday but, again, I can't continually take up all of my holiday time trying to sort this out.  Unfortunately many moons later I have still not got a stable computer that is usable (it is intended for my work primarily so i do need it to be stable.  I can't afford a crash in the middle of doing my work).
I'd like to get this rig working before the build becomes obsolete.  I have built several computers before but would not consider myself an expert so please don't get too technical with the jargon.
I would welcome any suggestions even if it is to arrange another RMA for the 7970.
    Thanks in advance
    Trevellion.

Ok, I did a fresh install.  At first I thought it had been the Lucid MVP software which was causing conflicts because the system appeared stable.  The computer would even recover from sleep mode (the stage where the fans stop) without mishap which had never been able to before.  Unfortunately, shortly afterwards I got the dreaded hang and the message 'AMD driver stopped responding and has recovered'.  It now seems to do this every time I switch the computer on now.  I just don't feel I can use this computer in it's current state for work as it's too unreliable.  Once the problems start they become much more frequent.
When I enter the Action Center, click 'Maintenance' and check under 'Review your computer's reliability and problem history', I can see multiple reports of 'Video Hardware Error'
Clicking on the report gives this message:

  • [Request] Bios Update for MSI 290x Lightning (Fan Issue)

    Hey there,
i'm forced to use 14.4 Catalyst now and having Fan Issues since then.
    So here is my S/N:
    S/N: 602 - V307 - 04SB1402053468
A short instruction on how to Flash correctly would be awesome

Use the attached UEFI vbios versions to fix the fan issue.
    TV307MH.101 is normal vbios, TV307MH.111 is LN2
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (307_04s.rar) and put the included file (TV307MH.101 or TV307MH.111) on that stick.
Rename TV307MH.101 / TV307MH.111 to 101.rom / 111.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 101.rom (or 111.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • 7970 lightning Crash at stock clocks

OK i just got my 7970 lightning
and i wanted to test it, so i completely reinstall my system and fires up furmark.
It runs for about 1.5 min and then the system reboots at stock clocks 1070/1400... if i crank it up to 1125 it happens at the 1 min mark.
what is wrong here? do i have a broken card or is furmark broken ?
BTW my system is stable 100% otherwise. 850w thermaltake psu, i7 2600k, maximus extreme IV.

I didnt play with furmark once saw temps tend to raise even after 75C mark.
My issue is with 'driver stopped responding and was restored', and i'm curious about one thing, i can not see 'system' in crashes, it crashed on desktop today, before it usually did when i tried playing games in stereo 3d, its not overheated while it does crash, and oppositely when i managed to get biggest temperature of 73C, in Civ5, i dont remember it crashing.
Oh, and another thing i'm interested in, my cards ASIC is 75.3%, which is right between 2 suggested voltages 1.112 and 1.175, default voltage i saw through afterburner is 1.112, could it be the problem that chip actually demands 1.175, but due to its marketing posture of premium class it was made to work on lower voltages it can not hold?

  • Msi 7970 lightning BE artifacts & weird stuff

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my msi 7970 lightning. Since a few months ago it started showing weird artifacts. I've mede a few video but ''I'm not allowed to post external links'', or at least so say the board.
The card it's stock speed (core and memory), the fans profile it's also at stock. I'm using the last Omega 14.12 driver and I've tried all the amd drivers from the last year. My cpu is an i7 3770 and my pc has 8 gb of ram.
    The card serial number is:
    S/N: 602-V278-040B1306042942
Now cames the pain. I had to stop playing Diablo 3 bacause some weird artifacts, then I quit playing Guild Wars 2 for the same reason (see the first video) and now I had to stop playing Dragon Age Origin because of the artifacts, which comes out at high to ultra setting (manageable by the card), and because the game keep crashing randomly to desktop (directX Error) or even freezing (Application Hang, ID 1001 Error). I have seen also weird artifacts on Watch Dogs and Battlefield 3 but fortunately I didn't like those game so much...
What should I do? I have even tried a clean win 8.1 installation...I'm really discouraged.
This card has still six more month of warranty, should I return to the shop?
    Thanks in advance,
    roz

    UPDATE:
B2 error solved. I tried the second bios on my msi z77 mpower motherboard and it wasn't update to the last release, so it was incompatible with amd 7970 card. Now I've update it the video card regularly boot.
Reading online i found that a possible explanation of the artifacts on 7970 cards is due to Hynix GDDR5 video memory ( H5GQ2H24MFR-R0C) voltages which are pushed too by manufacturers. So some people solved the issue reducing the memory voltages (see youtube) and clock speed.
Msi kept them under hynix scpecification, that's to say 6000 Mhz at 1.6 mV, maybe could be a defective module. I mean this card was build for overcloking so it seems weird to see these artifacts when the card is in full load and reaches 75-80 °C. In fact I've no issue, at least for now, with Crysis 3 at high details because the card never hit 70 °C.

  • 7970 Lightning voltage increase...

    Hi everyone,
First post here, so hello and a big thanks in advance for any help with this.
Currently the proud owner of a 7970 Lightning, watercooled with an EK full cover block.  I'm getting quite a taste for benchmarking and pushing my system further, currently have the highest 7970 graphics score in the OcUK 3dmark11 thread with what I can do so far but I'm becoming a little limited with the core voltage I have available.  Currently running at:
    1350mhz @ 1.35v (1.362v actual) core (40c load)
1900mhz @ 1.67v memory (36c load, can push past 2000mhz but memory correction becomes an issue)
    +30mv aux
    +20% PT
    VRM's hitting around 43c load
Ideally I'd like to get the core voltage to around 1.4v, this should see me push towards a 1400mhz core.  So what are my options for getting the voltage that nudge higher?  From my understanding a specialist version of Afterburner along side the LN2 vBIOS is required which allows up to 1.8v, I don't need this much voltage available, I'm also not too keen on signing my warranty away to get it.
I must stress I only require this voltage bump for some bench runs, its not going to be 24/7, as it is the 1070/1400 the stock vBIOS offers is more than enough for gaming.
So I guess in short what I'm asking, is there any other methods to get my core voltage up slightly? i.e. bios modification or other?
    Thanks again
    Pgi947

Ahh not what I wanted to hear
I can't even find evidence of a work around like the 680 Lightning owners have.  Its unfortunate as the card has so much potential under water.

  • BIOS REQUEST: 7970 Lightning/PE

Hello, I am trying to nail down some issues I am having with a system I am building for my boss. I would like to get the correct bios for all the cards because they were purchased used, and I don't trust the previous users. Running WIN7 64 bit on a Gigabyte x79-up4. Here are the S/Ns and models
    7970 Lightning
    602-V278-010B1208071013
    602-V278-02SB1208191790
    602-V278-02SB1203016065
    602-V278-02SB1203032679
    BONUS
    7970 Power
    602-V278-030B1211065589
I'd upload the bios but I don't know which one corresponds to each S/N, the slots are assigned out of order. FWIW Gpu-Z says 015.013.000.010.000000 for lightnings and 015.015.000.002.000000 for power.

    For Lightning cards:
    Normal:
    103 latest legacy
    100 latest GOP
    LN2:
    113 latest legacy
    110 latest GOP
    For bonus card:
    131 latest legacy
    130 latest GOP

  • 7970 lightning Be (boost clock speed)

Is their more then one version of the 7970 Lightning BE ?
With different boost clocks ? they all have A boots Clock of 1150 right ?

This card was one that was RMAed to me.  Why I had sent this card off too be RMAed i had order Another card. Could not live with out A GPU lol.
Anyhow, when I got the card back I uninstalled my 780ti ran driver sweep and installed the 7970 L BE.  And tested it to make sure the card was work as it should,  the boost clock ran @ 1150.
I sold the card on ebay.
The buyer is saying the card is only running at 1100 and making A huge issue out of this.
I dont know if he has fliped the bios switch or what.
Can the boost clock run at Different speeds in different systems ?

  • 7970 lightning screws

Hello, i am wondering if anyone has information on what screws are used to attach the pcb to the heatsink on the 7970 lightning BE.

This is a Users-to-Users Forum so no MSI engineer around but your problem is most obviously related to a defective card. Just rma. If an MSI service center is close anyway best to bring it there. The temps reported, odd fan sounds and artifacts even without 3D load are enough description.

newer drivers arn't always better as they can be very buggy and cause lots of problems! most graphics card manufacturers make a driver pack and test that it works as it should and update it when they validate that a new version won't cause more problems then it solves!
so if you don't even want to try using the driver for the card that MSI have on the website then your on your own as we cant rule out the current drivers as the problem!
ok, so ive uninstalled the current drivers and installed the older ones from MSI's site. Ive also installed the latest 2.2.5 Afterburner.
now can we talk about how my voltage is still blanked out?

enable the voltage control in afterburner settings and you are good to go.
refer to the op. im not an idiot.

  • 7970 Lightning temps

    good evening peeps.
I got my 7970 lightning yesterday, did some quick testing, and picked up something very wrong.  My idle temps are between 40 and 50 degrees, but my load in msi kombuster GPU burn in test it rockets up to the 90's, so I stopped it ... this is very concerning for me. Also if I flip the switch on the card, gpuz reads the clocks at 950 and 1350.. so it's underclocked.  This is a rma card, so I havent touched the bios, or oc'd it.  If some one can please give me any advice.. I really don't want to rma again..  my cpu also runs a bit high, I have run the setup outside the case. can it be a mobo problem? thanx for the info!

I would really avoid that if possible. I am not to bright with that kind of stuff, and have never done it with a graphics card.  Whats the chances that the new bios would fix this problem? Because I would rather RMA then re apply the heatsink, chances of me screwing up is much higher! and before I flash the bios, can some one please tell me if I am going to void my warranty? thanx
edit- seems I have the latest bios, any other suggestions before rma? will try the new amd drivers that were released yesterday...

  • No Dust Removal Technology working on new 7970 Lightning BE?!

    Hello.
I just got my new baby, the 7970 Lightning Boost Edition and noticed that the dust removal technology is not working.. A friend of mine has the 7970 Lightning and at system startup the dust removal technology seems to be working because for 30 seconds the card runs very fast and loud. My card does not do that, the computer starts and I hear nearly nothing..
is this normal for a BE version or is the dust removal function doa?
    thanks!
    best regards

my BE just runs a 1000rpm, and never increases.
