7gb onto 4.7disc?

hi there
Ive exported a slideshow from the app 'Photo to Movie' as a HD 1080i file and its turned out being 7gb .mov!
Noooow... when I try to import this file into iMovie it freezes
If i did manage to import to imovie would imovie be able to compress this file on 4.7mb? Is there any other way that I could compress this file onto a dvd?
many thanks for your help

excellent - ill give it a try with iDVD.
Strangely enough once dragging in my 7gb movie into iDVD in the status tab it only shows up as 0.4gb :S Does this mean its going to recompress it to 0.4gb - if so if probably wont be HD any more
oh well... here goes - this is my last blank DVD until i order some more so I hope this works
thanks for your help!

  • Can I burn bigger-than-DVD image onto hard drive and run it off hard drive?

I'm trying to create a DVD Kiosk of sorts. I have a series of instructional videos we have created--I would like it to play a video from the menu randomly if left alone for a period of time, and if someone moves the mouse, they will be given the DVD menu from which they can select one of the videos. This will take a lot of script writing, of course, and I also have more videos than will fit on one DVD.
*What I need to know is: Will Final Cut let me burn a disc image that's bigger than 4.7GB onto my hard drive so that I can just run this directly from a Mac Mini? If not directly possible when saving it, is there a work around?*
Additionally, if anyone has any wisdom or knows of any resources that would assist in writing such a script, that's also welcome.
    Thanks for your help.

The short answer is yes. You don't need (or want) a disc image. You want just the folders from the build (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS). You will get warnings but it will do it. You can also set up DVDSP to make a DVD-9 disc so you can get an idea of the project's size as you work and not get the warnings.
Within DVD authoring there is no way to recognize a mouse movement, but you could have an overlay that says GO to Menu on these random playing clips. Now to do this without doubling the assets for the motion clips (one with/one without overlay) you need to right a script that controls when the overlay shows. From menu timeout overlay on. From user action overlay off.
btw its not Final Cut that will make the image but DVD Studio Pro.

  • Back Up copies of DVDs

Have a simple question which I can not figure out for myself! How do i back up a DVD ie one which is dual layer therefore higher capacity than 4.7GB onto a single layer disc? I have Toast 6 Titanium and when I go to back my DVDs up I get a message saying the disc does not have enough space. I have a dual layer burner but as the dual layer dvds are expensive i don't wish to use this route. I presume I need extra software to do this, if so what is the best option and order in which i need to approach it. Thanks!

Transfer the contents of the Dual layer to your hard drive first and then see the file(s) will fit onto the 4.6 or so GB of the single layer DVD.
If your trying to rip dual layer DVD movies, change the region codes, decode the Macrovision copy protection, downsize the content to fit onto a single layer DVD, you'll have to look for software that does this at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.com (takes hours and isn't 100% perfect)
Just to let you know violating copy protection schemes is a crime in most countries, check with your local laws before proceeding or selling the results.
Also you'll burn DVD's a whole lot faster if you have as much RAM as possible.

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

Lion 10.7.5 is as far as you can go. You must have at least 2 GBs of installed RAM.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. Or you can order directly on the online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
    If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

  • How to fit 4 1/2 hours onto a DVD

OK i dont get it. Because It says that a standard DVD fits 4.7 GBs on a DVD. So when I finished my project with FCP. I exported using QT conversion. I exported my file as an MP4 using H.264. and got my 4 1/2 hour project down to 2.4 GBs. But when I tried to import it to DVDSP it said incompatible format...
What is the best way to fit my 4 1/2 hour video onto a DVDSP project without losing a lot of quality...

I just dont understand that if I can get the files to under 3 GBs why they wont fit on a single layer DVD
I think you may be missing the basic element here. The DVD-Video specification was established so that DVD-Video discs would be properly recognized and play in DVD players from any manufacturer. But in order for that to happen, the files on the DVD MUST comply with the DVD-Video specification. That spec requires specially formatted, MPEG-2 video and multiplexed with either AIFF (PCM) or AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio in the form of VOB files.
It wouldn't matter if your file had the size of only 2mb. If it isn't in the right format, it won't work. Essentially, it isn't the size that matters in this case; it the file format you provide to DVD-SP.
When you exported your movie using QuickTime Conversion, it doesn't matter what the resulting file size is ... because you chose MPEG-4 (h.264) and that doesn't meet the DVD-Video specification, nor does it meet the requirements of DVD-SP for encoding.
That's what Compressor is for. You simply export from FCP "Using Compressor" and choose the appropriate DVD preset. In your case, you'd have to modify a preset to meet the bit rate requirements for a program the length of yours ... or use a dual layer disc as has already been suggested.
You can also export a reference or self-contained movie form FCP and use the resulting file in Compressor or import it directly into DVD-SP and let it do the encoding. However, using Compressor will allow you much more control.
    -DH
ps: a single layer DVD disc (DVD-5) only has about 4.3gb of usable space even though the discs are rated at 4.7gb.

  • How can I create projects larger than 7GB?

I want to creat a project and it will be very large... over 10GB. I know that because I finnished only two thirds of it and it already 7GB size (I get the warnning message all the time)
Is there any way to create a larger projects? I dont want to burn it on a disc... I just want to save it as an image file, and play it from there...
If there's a way to make my project smaller so it can fit a Dual-Layer disc will also be a bless...
    Thank you all!!
    Naor

Yes. It is not the size in GB of your project. I have had many projects that were between 60 and 100 GB, but under the time lime.
It is theTIME limitation that iDVD is complaining about to you. A single-layer DVD can hold 120 minutes of content, including menus and submenus. A double-layer DVD can hold twice that much, 240 minutes total. Your project exceeds the capacity of even a double-layer DVD because it is too long to burn on one DVD.
To burn DVDs with that many minutes, you will need to split your project and burn it to two DVDs, so that each part is not longer than 240 minutes total time. This is the same for creating disk image files. They cannot exceed the total time limits.
I have seen reports of supercompressing data using Toast, so that you can fit more content onto a disk, but I have not used it this way, and I think you are probably trying to put too much onto one disk even for Toast. Maybe others have done this and can give your their experiences with Toast's limitations.

  • Why won't these videos fit on a 120min 4.7Gb disc?

There have been situations in which when I am using 120 min 4.7GB DVD+R discs, that iDVD tells me that the video/videos I insert onto a project exceeds the macimum duration of the disc. It doesn't make any sense when I drop a 1 hour and 30 min.,700mb .avi movie onto a project and it tells me that. Why is this happening?

iDVD mpg-2 compresses everything. The size of your raw content in MB isn't significant - what IS significant is the running time in minutes. iDVD can put up to 60 minutes of content on a single-layer disc in 'Best Performance' encoding mode or up to 120 minutes ion the 'High Quality' of 'Professional Quality modes.
BTW, 4.7 GB is the advertising capacity in decimal form; as far as a computer is concerned, the capacity is 4.37 GB.

  • 10GB Video to fit on a 4.7GB DVD

I've recorded a wedding onto mini DV and when I exported the 48min video to quicktime from FCP, the video is 10gb! Will this fit onto a DVD? I wouldn't think so since the DVD says 4.7GB.
I know there's way to compress files and retain quality, but I don't understand it well at all!
    Question.
    1. Is there a way to compress this video from the timeline in FCP to under 4.7GB with good quality? I'm not familiar with compression formats and directions so could you please assist with simple words

+I do have both. But I have little experience with compressor and none with DVD Studio Pro. However, whatever you have to say would greatly assist!+
    Ok,
I'll mention simple steps and I'll try to make them as much clear as I can.
    Why Compressor ?
Compressor will create an Mpeg2 of your edited video and an ac3 (dolby stereo) for the audio (You can't create ac3audio with DVDstudio).
(Use google for any farther information about any word or definition that remains slightly unclear to you).
After that is done burning your DVD with DVDStudio will be quicker and easier.
    Step 1
Once you are done with the edit you can:
either export it straight from the timeline to Compressor (File>Export>Using Compressor)
or create a QT movie (check self-contained in the export window) and import into Compressor after you open it.
If you export it straight from the timeline Compressor will open automatically,
if you wish to use the self-contained QT movie you can still export it from an open FCP project or open Compressor independently. If the the latter is your case once you open Compressor click on *Add File* in the toolbar (top left corner ).
In both cases your video will appear in an untitled project right below the toolbar. You can see the movie (or FCP) icon and the title of your project.
Now, the simplest way to proceed is as follow:
you see the text next to the icon of your movie (in the blue rectangle) saying "drag here settings and destinations"? Now go to the settings window below, you can see the settings and destinations tabs. Go to Settings*>*Apple 4 groups>DVD 10 groups>*DVD best quality 90 minutes* two settings. This is the most common setting to use.
In a nutshell drag the DVD best quality 90 minutes folder over the "drag settings and destinations here" text. Choose your destination. If you click each setting the inspector window activates. Now before we go ahead I suggest you to read the manual and understand the importance of the inspector window and its functions. In particular read about Avarege bit rate, maximum bit rate and in general Variable frame rate (VBR) and constant frame rate. With regard to audio read about ac3.
This time we leave default settings and proceed by clicking the Submit button.
In the preview window, right below the player commands you can see a little arrow and a date, click on the arrow and you can see that Compressor is encoding your video.
    Step 2
When the encoding process is over open DVDstudio.
See the first button of the toolbar , top left? Click on Import Asset, find your encoded audio and video files and open them.
Now since your movie has been already compressed video(Mpeg2) and audio (ac3) they will show in the assets tab below the graphical tab followed by two green lights.
From now follow Shane Ross's steps from point 3 if you don't want a menu.
If you want the menu there's a simple video tutorial that came with FCP 2. Take a look at that.
    Hope this helps,
    G.
PS. BTW yes, 10 GB DV once compressed will easily fit in a DVD

  • Used utilities to burn dvd but its too big 5.5gb and dvd-r is only 4.7gb

this is all new to me so bear with me! ( and i thought macs were idiot proof!
have burnt dvd using utilities it was 5.5gb but the disc i want to burn to is only dvd-r @4.7gb how do i get it onto a dvd to play on my tv/dvd player, (do i need to get a double sided dvd-r, will that help?)

At least three options i see here:
    1. Roxio Toast fit to disc or
    2. Try an alternate DL DVD-R media like:
    3. or break your project into 2 separate iDvd projects and use the above. (do not confuse the above media with DL which is entirely different media).

  • How do I get 30GB of video onto a DVD?

I recently had an event filmed on an HD video camera. It is about 6 hours of footage total. I cut it down to about 4 hours in iMovie and exported it using QuickTime H.264. The output file is 30GB. What steps would I take to get this burned onto a DVD to share with friends and family?
The footage was captured at an engagement party and as such, I can't really reduce it lower than 4 hours. What options do I have?

    Shaq Bee wrote:
... What options do I have?
    • in the list of Projects, ctrl-click on your Project
    • choose 'duplicate'
    • erase in #1 the second half
    • erase in #2 the first half
burn to two DVDs, part #1 and part #2
iDVD supports a max. length of 120min content.
iDVD supports double-layer DVDs (=240min), but some DVD-standalone players don't 'like' such disks.
keep in mind: in theory, there's no min. bitrate on DVDs, so, with other tools, you could squeeze 10h onto a 4.7GBs DVD-r .... but a too-high compressed DVD is no fun to watch, too much artifacts.
and, who's watching 4h at a single piece?
I'm pretty sure, a 20min best-of, short clips, good music, lots of stills, master-piece comes better across than a 'real time documentation' ...
and Welcome, Shaq Bee, to the  boards ...

  • Why is the DVD capacity for iDVD shown as 4.2Gb when my DVDs show a capacity of  4.7Gb?

I've recently discovered iDVD 7.1.2 and when trying to write out a file, the option for a single layer DVD is 4.2Gb, although my DVD's show a capacity of 4.7Gb.
    Why the discrepancy please?
(sorry if the question's been asked before, the ASCs are new to me)

iDVD doesn't care about size (no joke here).  It's only concerned with playing time.  iDVD will encode and compress the files to fit the DVD disk depending on the encoding method chosen. The following was taken from this Apple  document: iDVD '09 (7.x): About iDVD encoding settings
The encoding settings in iDVD are the following
◼ Best Performance (for projects less than 60 minutes in length).
When you select Best Performance, iDVD encodes your video in the background as you’re working on your project instead of waiting until you burn it. This can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to create a finished DVD. This is a good choice if your project is an hour or less in duration (for a single-layer disc).
Best Performance encodes your video at a preset bit rate that produces great quality for projects that can easily fit on your disc. If you have a larger project that needs to be squeezed onto a disc, you should select one of the other encoding options.
    ◼ High Quality
This is the best encoding option for larger projects that are between 1 and 2 hours long (for a single-layer disc). With this setting, iDVD chooses the best bit rate possible for the amount of data you need to fit onto your disc. It’s the only option that “squeezes” all the data onto a disc at a bit rate that ensures a high video quality in your burned DVD. Because iDVD does not encode in the background with this option, it takes longer to burn your disc. The encoding process begins when you burn the DVD instead of when you start working on your project.
    ◼ Professional Quality
The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about time.
So depending on the playing time of your project select the encoding method that will best suit it.
Note:  if there is a lot of fast motion in a video the Professional Quality will determine which portions of the video need the least amount of compression and which can stand the most in order to produce the best overall qualtiy possible.
