7th Gen iPod Nano shuts off randomly

My iPod Nano is just about my favourite piece of hardware that I've ever bought from apple. I'm primarily a pc user when it comes to computers, and having a basic, small iPod means I can listen to music and podcasts and leave the more complicated tasks to the equipment that I've spent more money on. However, my iPod recently started bugging out in a way that makes it nearly unuseable.
The iPod will quite happily run for a day or so if I don't use the touch screen. This is fine for podcasts as I can use the volume and play-pause on the outside. However, if I want to make a choice on the screen, about one in five touches will cause the iPod to shut off. If I reset it, it will either flash the apple logo and shut off again, or get to the homescreen with the loading symbol, then make three short beeps and shut off again. General internet searches have proved fruitless, and although the iPod is cheap enough that I can buy a new one without it being too much of an issue, I would much prefer to keep that money for other things.
Although apple hardware isn't my area of expertise, I believe that there may be some kind of issue with the battery, as there have been black-outs and brown-outs in my area and my iPod has ben charging during a couple of these. I was thinking that the RAM could also be in bad shape for some reason, but I did a dram test, which it passed. The iPod is currently in diagnostic mode, so I can give information on the battery and the like if that would help, but I have no idea what the numbers mean personally.
My warranty ran out a few weeks ago and I live about two hours from the nearest Genius store, so bringing it back isn't really an option. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well the bug appears to have been fixed by the 1.0.3 patch. My battery is still stuffed so I will have to buy a new one at one point, but at least this issue is sorted out.

  • Why does my iPod nano shut off randomly? I just bought it. After about a minute of music, it shuts off.

I just bought my wife an iPod nano. Went through the set up and then updated the iPod through iTunes. Now, after about a minute of music (with two different sets of headphones) it simply shuts off. As if it's in power convseration mode. But I can't find a setting to prevent this. Very frustrating for having JUST bought this.

If you have not already, do a Reset following this procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod.  It is not erased.
If that does not help, the most likely fix for your problem would be a Restore.  This WILL erase the iPod, re-install its softare, and set it to default settings.  To do it, select the iPod in the iTune sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The button for doing a Restore is there.
For anything that is currently on your computer (such as songs and pictures) that were synced to the iPod, you can just re-sync them.  That should not take too long, even if you do it manually (without using automatic syncing).
For anything that is only on the iPod (not on your computer), they will be lost if you do a Restore.  But that was a known risk.  After all, your iPod could be lost or stolen (or seriously damaged), and those items would be lost.
If those items are songs you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them (at no cost) on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.
or even be recognized by my computer when it is like this. It just sits there.
If you are having a problem getting the iPod to be recognized by iTunes, which is necessary to do a Restore, try this...  Set the iPod to Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Then, see if iTunes will recognize it when connected.  Also, if it is recognized more reliably in Disk Mode, before doing a Restore, you can try using a third-party method or utility to transfer song files off the iPod to your computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • My 7th Generation iPod Nano shuts off whenever I press a button.

I bought my iPod nano 16 GB a few months ago, and I noticed that sometimes, when I tried to open the screen (pressing the top button or the menu button) instead of opening, the iPod shut itself completely, and then rebooted, I could see the Apple logo on white screen, etc.
I went to exchange it once, after I finally managed to find the time, and then, when I tried the new one, it had exactly the same problem, but twice as worse.
Now when I try to choose a song, open the screen, wander in my playlists or even when the song ends and tries to load the next one, it reboots, and at the same time, it generally resets the general settings (brightness, wallpaper, time zone, etc.)
Now, I don't know exactly what is wrong with those 2 iPods, but it is very frustrating, and discouraging. I can't even manage to choose a song before it reboots and I have to try again, after what it generally crashes again. I'd say it does 75% of the time I touch it.
I am using a windows 7 64-bit laptop, incase that helps, but apart from going back to the store and getting a 3rd one that, hopefully works properly this time around, which I could barely find time to, since I live far as **** from the closest applestore here, I don't see what I could possibly have done wrong.
Also, I never dropped it, or even scratched its screen, I never had any problems while synchronizing it and I never bullied it either.

  • My brand new 6th gen ipod nano shuts off for no reason.  the headphone is all the way plugged in.  has done it since i bought it a week ago...any suggestions?

Plays part of a song, shuts off.  Doesn't matter if it is plugged fully into a jack or docked onto a radio.  Anything I find online shows that this is common for this ipod..should I return it and get something that actually works?

    Yes.
    It's not normal.

  • The on/off button on my 6th gen iPod nano recently got spoilt and I sent it back to the shop for a repair/exchange a week ago. Now I have just found out about the new 7th gen iPod nano and I am wondering, can I get the new one as a replacement?

No.  You can turn your 6G Nano in to be recycled at your local Apple Store for a 10% discount towards the purchase of a new one. Otherwise, your only other option would be to sell the iPod on Craigslist or eBay and use the proceeds from the sale towards the purchase of the new 7G nano.

  • Does the 7th gen iPod Nano work w/Bluetooth 2.1 Speakers?

Does the 7th gen iPod Nano only work with Bluetooth 4.0 compatible speakers or should it also work with Bluetooth 2.1 devices?

No one here would know for sure. Since the Lightning adapter is new it may take awhile before you see any. The adapter works with my Zeppelin so there are some out there that will work. It will not be Apple making it.

  • Hi, I have a 7th Gen Ipod Nano and I am unable to delete songs. When synced on the PC I can select tracks but right clicking on them does not give the ability to delete. I have downloaded the latest 1.0.3 software but it did not help.

Hi,  I have a 7th gen ipod nano and am having a problem with deleting songs. I can select the track in my ipod's library but right clicking does not bring up the option to delet. I have downloaded the latest update for the ipod but this has not solved the issue. Can anyone suggest a remedy? thanks

    Hello Lor100,
In order to delete or add individual songs from and to your iPod, you'll need to enable 'manual mode' on the device. This will allow you to add and remove exactly the content you desire.

  • Synchronisation is moving my music (7th gen iPod Nano)

I’m having a problem synchronising my 7th gen iPod Nano with iTunes.
When I sync, it comes up with a message saying that a whole list of songs couldn’t be copied to the iPod because they couldn’t be found. This is because when I sync, songs that I’ve listened to (i.e. ones that have been modified and need to be synced) will sometimes get moved into an entirely new folder.
For example, I’ll have this folder:
\Music\The Smith Street Band\The Smith Street Band – Sunshine & Technology
Then when I sync, the songs in that folder get shifted from there to a new folder:
    \Music\The Smith Street Band\Sunshine & Technology
And my iTunes can’t locate them anymore because they’ve been moved.
I think I also have some songs that got renamed as well.
I have iTunes 11.0.3.42 and my iPod version is 1.0.2 PC. I’m using Windows 7 32-bit.

  • 7th gen iPod Nano -deleting a podcast

I have a 7th gen iPod Nano and I can't delete a podcast from the device.  It does not appear in my iTunes podcast library.  How do I fix this?

"It'd be nice to get the 7th gen iPod as a replacement"
Because you'd need a different power adapter?  That's not nice.

  • Is their any way of linking my 7th gen iPod nano to my new IPad (3rd release)

Is there any way of getting my 7th gen iPod nano to my iPad 3 (3rd release anyway). They both have Bluetooth but don't seem to recognise one another.

I decided to fiddle around with the USB ports. I did it before but I only used the first two ports. I connected my iPod to the other two ports and it detected it. I noticed this issue just now when I was charging my 5S and the battery percentage wasn't showing up on iTunes so iTunes wasn't detecting it. So now I resolved that issue but now I have to see why those two USB ports aren't working properly.

  • Can't update the songs in a 7th Gen. iPod nano! Help!

Okay, I've been having problems with my 7th Gen iPod nano and I'm getting tired of this. A few days ago, I had a virus in my computer (the iPod wasn't hooked up at the time), and I had to restore everything in my computer. I downloaded iTunes again and when I plugged my iPod in the computer, the songs in my library are updated, but when I unplug the iPod nano, the songs in my playlist show songs that I had previously listened too a few weeks before the virus. But, now every time I plug it in to update the songs, my library on the computer updates, but the songs in the iPod still show the same list of songs from weeks ago. It doesn't show any sign of being updated. Plus, I looked up on the computer to see how to unfreeze the songs, and it tells me to hold the button for a few seconds and wait for the Apple Logo, I do that, but I don't see any Apple Logo. It doesn't seem to restore anything. Is my iPod not working now?
And I know that it's not an iPod nano, but I'm having the same problem with my 5th Generation iPod. I don't know what is going on, but I can't seem to update my 5th Generation iPod either.
Can someone help me with this? I don't know what else to do. I'm wondering if I need to buy new iPods, but I don't really want to spend the money to buy new iPods unless I REALLY need too.
    Thanks,
    Raven

Yes. My dad did a system restore and wiped everything out, and then reinstalled the computer. What do you mean to check my sync settings? Sorry, but whenever something happens to my ipods, I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do for them. If I can't get the ipods fixed, what's the next option?
    Thanks,
    Raven.

Haha I had the exact same problem. Once I had tried it like 4 different pairs of headphones i was ready to give my iPod back. Then I tried pushing the headphones in further and proceeded to kick myself. I seems a lot of people have the same problem, post it on here and realise a few minutes later.

  • 7th gen iPod Nano bad flutter on podcasts

My 7th gen iPod Nano periodically suffers bad flutter on playback of podcasts, with the voices and music sounding rough and choppy, in the same manner as on a really bad turntable back in the days of LPs. When it happens, I perform a reset, reload everything, and it'll be alright for a week or three until the problem happens again. I'm getting a bit tired of having to perform resets and reloads. Any suggestions on how to avoid the problem?
I also have an older iPod classic, and I have never experienced the same problem on it, though I also put the same podcasts on it through the same copy of iTunes, so the problem would appear to be the iPod Nano itself.

    Hello NikPayne,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you have isolated the Podcast playback issue to your iPod nano. As frustrating as playback issues can be, there are some good troubleshooting steps I would recommend. Please use the attached article for information on troubleshooting your iPod nano. Please let me know if the issue continues after you have worked through the steps. Also, if the issue continues, does this happen with only Podcasts or with Music or other audio playback as well?

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

  • Is there any way of getting a 7th Gen iPod Nano to sync the same as older generaqtions

I have two problems with my new iPod Nano (7th Gen).
    1. When synced, artwork either isn't loaded at all or the wrong artwork is loaded against the wrong artist.
    2. When I play an album the songs are not played in the correct order, but shuffled automatically.
Can anybody suggest answeres to sorting these issues?
Frankly, if not, the 7th Gen Ipod is a serious regression - it feels more like a very old mp3 player!

The songs are still on her ipod.
They should transfer ok but make sure and use the same Apple ID that was used for the original purchase.
Connect the iPod to a computer, launch iTunes.
From the iTunes menu bar click File > Transfer Purchases From...
Make sure and backup the iTunes purchases >  How to back up your media in iTunes
If this is an iPod touch read here >  Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
