7th generation ipod nano won't turn on

So this is what I was doing before my ipod went black: I was listening to a podcast, then paused it and turned it off. The next day, I went to go turn it on. However, I pressed the home button accidently and it was already on, and playing some music/podcast. I don't know what it was because after that, the screen immediately went black. I tried to turn it on but it didn't do anything. So, I charged it for about 2 hours. I pressed the hold button to turn it on again, but it wouldn't do anything. It doesn't turn on. I just got it like a week ago. Also, when I plug it in to my laptop or desktop, a message pops up saying that it is not recognized. Any help is appreciated!

Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at some of the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

My 7th generation iPod nano won't allow me to sync videos from iTunes. How can I fix this?

What video content works with iTunes and mobile devices?
    iTunes:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.
    Video podcasts.
    iTunes Digital Copies.
iTunes Store Movie Rentals (Requires iTunes 9 or later).
    Mobile Devices:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
Videos that have been shared to iTunes using QuickTime Player (Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard).
Videos that have been re-encoded for iPod with QuickTime 7 Pro.
Videos that have been re-encoded for iPod with iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and others. Refer to Exporting a movie from iMovie HD to iPod for an iMovie HD tutorial.
Video Podcasts that have been created for mobile devices.
Video files after using the iTunes File > Create New Version > Create iPod or iPhone version option.
Video files after using the iTunes File > Create New Version > Create iPad or AppleTV version option (iPad and AppleTV only).
See below for detailed movie specifications.
iTunes  Store Movie Rentals (Requires iTunes 9 or later).
Does the video need to be encoded in a special way?
All mobile devices which iTunes can sync video to can play the following video formats:
    H.264
File formats: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov
Video: Up to 768 kbits/sec, 320 x 240, 30 frames per second (fps), Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3.

Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • My 7th generation iPod nano will not turn on or be recognized by my computer.

I have plugged it into my computer. Nothing. Blank. Computer says it can't read the USB.
I update the version of iTunes. Nothing. Blank.
I hold the power button. Guess what? Nothing. Blank.
I've only had this iPod for a couple weeks, and I have not had any problems before.

If this is the case, I suggest you return the unit and ask for a replacement. Cheers!

Does anyone know why my music wont play on my 7th generation iPod nano? I've tried resetting it already but that didnt work. Can someone please help.

I would to a Restore.  Select the iPod in iTunes.  Go to the Summary tab for the iPod.  There is a button there to do a Restore.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  After Restore complete, try playing songs on the iPod again.
If THAT does not fix the problem, and it's not bad headphones (since you also tried the "speaker"), there is probably a hardware problem on the iPod.  All 7th gen nanos are still under warranty.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, you should take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To minimize waiting, you can make a reservation on store's web page.

  • 7th generation iPod nano flashes apple logo with a white screen and won't play.  What is wrong with it?

I have a 7th Generation iPod Nano that started flashing the Apple logo with a white background.  I have tried Diagnostics, restoring the iPod and even resetting it.  At one point it was in a Restore Loop.  I'm thinking maybe it has a virus but reading further says that I may be missing one of the drivers.  Is there any way to fix it without taking into a tech?? Please help...miss my music!!

  • 7th generation ipod nano stops tracking my runs after a minute

7th Generation Ipod Nano: when using the fitness icon and running, it pauses every minute or so and i have to physically hit resume to start again and the mileage is off. Anyone know how to fix? I can't get it to calibrate because it won't make it through a whole work out to do that.

Is an earphone or Bluetooth headphone connected to the nano?
If its an earphone you can check the earpod jack on the iPod to see if there is any lint in it.
If there is no earphone or Bluetooth headphones connected, the iPod thinks play was hit by accident and pauses it to conserve battery.

My 16 gig, 7th generation ipod nano just died yesterday.
I assumed it just needed recharging.
It is not responding. I have complete black screen even when its hooked up to charge....and it wont turn on.
    Help!!!!
I got it as a birthday gift around the end of May, its brand new.

Clean out the Lighting connector on the bottom of the nano, clean Lightning connector cable, make sure your computer is not set to go to sleep and connect it to the computer and let it charge for 30 minutes. After this time, while it is still connected, hold down the home and sleep buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.

  • 7th Generation iPod Nano connection issue

My Dell Inspiron N7110 does not recognize my brand new 7th generation iPod Nano even when I use a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port.

Gee...I'm answering my own posts.  But...this is the deal.  Apparently, my iPOD Nano froze...and one thing I did not do was reset it.  I did that, and by IPOD was suddenly recognized by my computer....and is now happily charging, etc.   So, case solved.

  • Why does the 7th generation ipod nano not have games

I want to know why the 7th generation ipod nano does not come with:
    1- games
    2- voice memo

    1. The iPod Nano runs the Pixi operating system, not iOS and has too small a screen for displaying the game and controlling it.
    2. Plug in a headset with a microphone: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipod_nano_user_guide.pdf page 46.
