8.0.2 and new ram, performance boost or waste of time?

Hi all,
I am going to add more ram to my MacBook. I understand that my MacBook officially only accepts of 2GB of ram (2x 1 gig sticks)I have read that many folks have put 4 gigs in a 2x2 gig matched pair configuration in there machine to get a maximum of 3 gigs. As I understand it this is not a supported configuration.
I don't mind paying for 4 gigs to only 3 my question is, would this make Logic unstable? I only use this machine for Logic and the apps that come with Logic Studio 1. I only go on line with it for updates and such so my main concern is keeping this machine stable for Logic.
Also I am imaging that increasing ram from 1 gig to even just the 2 that is officially supported will give me a bit of a performance boost but in what ways will I notice it in relation to Logics performance?
Also any recommendations for RAM in the UK would be very welcome.
Sorry for such a dull question,
Regards,
Jay

Hey Notefarm, a lot of my friends ( including myself and I noticed somebody else linked it here as well the other day ) use Crucial because of the macapp you can download which will tell you want you can have RAM wise and how much it's gonna cost you.

I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

What you need to do is connect your phone to iTunes but do not click sync.  Go to File at the top and click transfer purchases from phone, that'll put all your apps into iTunes.  When it's done transferring, locate your phone on the sidebar and click it.  Then find the apps option above the picture of your iphone, you can select which apps you want or don't want on your phone.  After selecting your apps then you can sync.  Once you do this you should never have your problem anymore.

  • Temporary freezes after fitting SSD and new ram

I recently replaced the internal HD in my MacBook Pro with a 250GB SSD from OWC and doubled the ram to 4GB at the same time. I'm very pleased with the improvement in performance, except that I now get temporary freezes for as long as 20-30 secs. I can move the cursor around and click but nothing happens. When The computer 'comes back' it responds to what I did while it was 'away'. This happens several times a day.
Any ideas what might be going on here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve  = : ^ )

I have a SSD installed and I don't get any of that. I also don't use Safari, I use Chrome.
The SSD I installed is a Kingston SSDNow V200 128GB. It has been running fine for 2 months.
One big reason I use Chrome is because it allows me to sync all browser data across many different computers.
If I change, add or delete a bookmark it gets updated on all my computers. If I save or delete a login username & password for anything it get updated on all computers.
    But I digress.
As to your problem I'd call OWC and tell them your problem. And you could try putting the original drive back in and see if you get any freezes. If you do them it may be the RAM. If you don't then it is the SSD.

  • Aperture and new 12-core Mac crashes all the time...

My brand new Mac 12-core and Aperture doesn't fit together!
To explain this first, everything on my new Mac is freshly installed. I spent nearly a week on that, but after trying to migrate it first... I formatted my hard disk and installed everything from scratch.
Now the machine is running except Aperture. While trying to export some photos it will crash for sure. I've tried this today around 30 times and it happens always after 100 - 200 pics. I had an e-sata card installed and removed it, but it happened again and again. I did the PRAM reset, repaired permissions, checked the RAM with Checkup and so on. Nothing helps...
    Any ideas????

With a new box I would call Apple 1-800-SOS-APPL and have them resolve the issue.
Also, now is a good time to get in the habit of using Disk Utility to repair Permissions before and after installations. Over decades many of us on the Photoshop forums have formed the opinion that although Repairing Permissions is seldom a "fix," always Repairing Permissions immediately before and after every installation of any kind is helpful to long term trouble free operation with heavy graphics apps.
Note before and after installations, not every time an app is run. The "why" is a bit nebulous I am afraid. Simplistically the premise is arrange things properly prior to an installation so the Installer is starting from a proper arrangement; then rearrange after installation in case the Installer managed to screw things up somehow.
For many users, perhaps most, repairing Permissions is a waste of time. However things are different in the world of heavy graphics, enough so that empirically many of us have concluded that repairing Permissions before and after installations is worthwhile.
E.g. any time a Pro Epson printer hiccups I find reinstalling the driver to be a very useful step, and sometimes that quick simple driver reinstallation changes thousands of Permissions. Although incorrect Permissions may not be problematic for lesser apps, heavy graphics apps like Aperture or Photoshop may be more easily compromised.

  • More Ram Performance Boost?

Has anyone noticed a perfomance boost by increasing the ram in their G5 iMac with iSight? I am considering getting the 2gb chip. I realized a pretty good improvement running multiple apps and browsing the internet on my 17" iMac Intel core duo.
    What say yee?

Are you still using the stock 512MB RAM? If so, you will see a huge improvement especially if you are running multiple apps like you are.

  • Logic 7.2.3 and new autoload performance weirdness

I think it might be my new autoload i have created, but i am having really weird system performance monitor readings compared to activity monitor. Logic only seems to be using one cpu for the most part, and will not distribute to the other.
I downloaded the sculpture benchmark II post song, and Logic does use both CPU's on that. So i am leaning towards my autoload. Man i don't want to rebuild it. ERRR!
Here is what i have done. I have tried the autoload on both intel and PPC macs. same results. right bar 1/2 way up and the left bar 1 mark. i have added Space Designers to try to force the other cpu to work, but it just maxes out the Right CPU on both PPC and intel. then i get the Logic error.
it is not a 10.4.9 issue. the test was run on 10.4.8 with both machines.
I have trashed my prefs. it seems to work for about 10 secs correctly distributing the load, and the straight to the right cpu.
does anyone have advise, or have you experienced this?

well it appears that it might just be a corrupt autoload. i am playing back older songs, and they are working correctly.
this weekend i am going to spend around 4 hours creating the new autoload.
i can't believe that after the recording delay, the rewire, the total mix creation in the env that i am having this issue, but i have gotten a few new ideas for recent post of others.
does anyone have a preferred way of creating the autoload. should i run the system setup? should i just pick a templated and start from there?
    advice please.

  • I am having a difficult time downloading HD movies from iTunes. I tried on both my imac and new macbook pro but 95% of the time I get error 8008 (corruption). I can stream HD content from Netflix and hulu w/o problems. I also empty my download folder.

After it started happening on my imac I tried to download on my ne macbook pro but the same thing is happening. I can stream without any ral noticiable problems from my icloud library, Netflix, and Hulu but when I try to download so I can back them up I get the 8008 error code. I have contacted spple support and am still waitin on an answer. Sometimes the error will happen towards the beginning and other times when it is almost downloaded. I can tell it is atarting when the time remaining starts to fluctuate, then the download bar may stop ans start over. It seems to be an icloud problem but I thought I would check to see if anyone else has had the problem and was able to get it taken care of. It should be noted that everyonce in a while I do get a complete download.

These alerts occur due to timeouts or conflicts trying to write a file during download.
If you encounter this issue while while downloading something from the iTunes Store:
Delete your iTunes Downloads folder, located in:
    Mac OS X:
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads   Note: "iTunes Media" may appear as "iTunes Music. Also, the tilde (~)  refers to your Home directory.
After locating your iTunes Downloads folder:
    Quit iTunes.
Delete the Downloads folder on your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Check for Available Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.

  • New RAM Does Not Run At Correct Timings

    Hey guys,
My package arrived today.  Brand new OCZ PC3700 Gold Edition 1GB Dual Channel kit.
Before installing, I clocked back my CPU to default speed and set the memory frequency to Auto.
I stuck in the new modules and booted up. Booted in dual-channel, but only at 400MHz when they're DDR466. Strange.
I went into the BIOS and manually set the frequency to 466, and they booted fine. My CPU booted at 3.26GHz instead of the default 2.8, I assume because I have 1:1 ratio set and my FSB must keep up with the memory.
According to CPU-Z though, they're running at 2.5-4-4-10, when the website says they run at 2.5-3-3-7.
What gives? I thought they would run at their rated timings when they're at the default frequency.
Also, how do I know what timings I should use for different FSB speeds? I was planning on trying some overclocking tonight to see how far I should get, but I need to know what to set the timings at before I do so.
Also, what should I set the MAT to in the BIOS? he options I have are Normal, Fast, Turbo(MAT) and Ultra-Turbo(MAT).  Does the MAT setting affect the RAM timings?  In what way, exactly?  The MSI website does not explain MAT in any great detail.  Also, what should I set this at when I overclock?

SPD uses info programmed into the ram sticks to decide what settings to use for particular speeds. You can use a utility like Sisoft Sandra to see what is programmed.
Normal, Fast, Turbo and Ultra-Turbo are the performance mode settings. Fast and higher enable the PAT mode (see  P4 Neo Unofficial Guide ). However, at FSB settings higher than 218, PAT becomes disabled. At settings higher than approximately 225, the 'lost' performance is regained. The settings themselves allow the bios to set progressively more agressive memory settings.
When you set the RAM speed to 400 instead of Auto, and set the CPU FSB at 225 or higher, a lot of ram that won't run in Ultra-Turbo at other settings is able to run.
As for the ram speed rating, it isn't the speed the ram runs at. It is the maximum speed it is supposed to be able to run at. When you set the ram speed in the bios, you are setting the speed it runs at when the cpu FSB is at 200. Increase the cpu FSB by 10% and the ram runs 10% faster.
Any time you increase the FSB setting, make sure you go to the AGP/PCI setting. It will be greyed out, but you can hit the enter key anyways. Then select the closest setting to 66/33 you can find. This will keep the AGP card stable and prevent data corruption problems with SATA drives.

  • New Macbook vs New Macbook Pro and Lightroom 2 Performance Increase?

I'm considering the purchase of a new Macbook or a new Macbook Pro that Apple introduced last week. I currently have an early 2007 black Macbook (2.0Ghz Intel Duo).
I'm wondering if anyone has some advice and/or experience concerning how Lightroom 2 performs on the new Apple laptops? Will the new graphics chips make a big difference on how Lightroom 2 performs?
    Any thoughts / advice?

    No surprise there, huh?!
As long as no one can provide any first-hand experiences, my take on it
is, that screen size is a very important factor.
Personally I find working in LR quite comfortable on a 1440/900px
display (MB Pro), while on the smaller screen of a MB, things might feel
a bit crammed, but that's just my impression ;-)

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.

  • MSI Z68A-GD80(G3) and Corsair's New RAM

Yeah, ok, it all looks great, but how do they work together outside of a test laboratory in a real world home built pc?
That question was answered very quickly, without any special fiddling about required beyond normal setting changes.
When the Corsair kit was installed, the usual 'Memory Has Changed' screen popped up. No big deal, a simple check in the UEFI/BIOS looked like everything defaulted to ensure a successful post and bootup. Yup, that's exactly what took place. Corsair took the right approach IMO to set the profile to default to DDR3 1333. At the next restart, it was a simple matter to set the manufacturer's recommended rated speed of 2133, CR 1, 9 11 10 27, tRFC 171 on Auto DRAM V. Posted and booted right up.
Yeah, ok, how about if 8GB isn't enough RAM for me?
Figured that might be a question asked. Here is the finding. To make it more real, often pc builders buy components at different times. This can be problematic, but that is best discussed on a case by case basis. Back to the answer. Purchased on purpose a kit from a different batch, even the serial numbers were way apart. After they were installed, the usual 'Mem. Change' screen again, but at F10 - Enter, it posted and booted right up! No increase of DRAM V. was required. In fact, with it set to Auto, the 'Read Only' actually shows the voltage to be 1.472v's (by meter, it was just below 1.50v's).
Note that CPU-Z X.M.P. for this RAM shows wrong. In the UEFI/BIOS, Memory-Z, it shows correctly.
Conclusion? I would say MSI mainboards and this RAM are going to work out just fine together.

Quote from: Bernhard on 14-September-12, 11:14:44
That formula may be a good rule of thumb, or may have worked with DDR and DDR2, but looking at JEDEC standard 1333, that would already be out. 9.9.9.24 is the standard. that would mean the 24 should be 20, which it's not. Maybe for OC'ing it may be an indicator of how far you can tighten them
These are all tweaks that probably cannot be realised anywhere else but in benchmarks and tests as performed here.
But its nice to compare similar or the same memory on similar platforms and see how close the performance figures are, yet highlight also how they differ, even at the same settings. Good to see for newbie OC'ers that even at the same settings, no two rigs will ever be the same.
That makes sense, since I tried to look the article up again (from Mushkin actually), and the article appears to be so old, they took it down.
It is quite surprising how close our bench results really are! It is also interesting how different systems with the same memory react to timings. Learned some good things in this thread, and once again, glad I made the purchase!

  • Random restarts and freezes. Just upgraded my RAM trying to diagnose new RAM as the problem but they pass Rember test.

Hey so I have been dealing with random reboots and computer freezes since upgrading my RAM. I also reinstalled my 10.8.2 at the same time I upgraded my RAM. I have a Mac Mini Mid 2011 with the OWC Data Doubler Kit and a Crucial M4 128GB Boot drive. My computer reboots every 30 minutes or so and sometimes completely freezes up. I am trying to figure out if the new RAM is the issue as I can send them back. I have ran several Rember RAM tests but the computer freezes mid test so I can not see the issue. All other times it completeles the RAM test with no issues.
