8.1.2 Security Update 1 PROBLEM

I've just downloaded the security update. Now my MS Word, and only my MS Word, just crashes. HELP!

Hi Karen. Try disabling the Macros in Word (if you can). How long does Word stay open before crashing?

  • Tiger 10.4.11- Security Update- Internet Problems

I have big problems with Internet (very slow) since I installed the latest Security Updates ! Who can help? (if possible in german...) Thanks (e041172 at yahoo.de)
    l

Schade. Mein Deutsche is nicht sehr gut.
I am not an expert here, but a number people have had similar problems. The issue seems to have started in July.
Various solutions have been posted, but the two that worked for us are as follows (using 10.4.11). Both are setting in System Preferences > Network > Built In Ethernet TCP/IP (we're hardwired to the internet at the moment).
One solution was to enter DNS setting as 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
The other solution was to enter the DNS setting as 4.2.2.5
After entering, hit Apply Now, then restart the computer. Both worked, but the second actually seemed to be a little faster.
We have not tried this with the Network > Airport yet, but one post suggested using the longer DNS settings for it and the shorter setting for Ethernet.
    Good luck!

  • Has the lastest security update caused problems for anyone else?

Since the latest security update things have been a little weird with my MBP. Within 5 hours of udating the computer there were two kernal panics. At least I think the second one was a kernal panic. I had closed the lid and it wouldnt sleep or turn back on and it had no response to the power button or any keys so I eventually pulled the battery. Then on restart it acted as if recovering from a panic.
Since then I have had other problems such as long waking time from sleep, dim screen after restarts, and itunes opening for no reason at all. After the latest restart things seem more 'normal.'
Has anyone else had this problem? If it continues, what should I do?

And here was I thinking it was my own imagination! After installing that annoying update, my MBP has not been the same.
I also had two kernal panics exactly as you have described.
My MBP seems to me to be extremely sluggish compared to what it was, and I am seriously condsidering reinstalling OS x and not installing that update.
At one point I decided to run disk check and it said I needed to repair my hard drive, something about the actual size and recorded size being different, so I repaired that last night so I will have to see how that goes.
I am very careful with my comp so i know that it is nothing I did that could cause thes problems.
And of course to add another problem to the list, My battery life is nothing like it used to be. I am a college student and up until i installed that update i could easily go 4 hours in lecs using the laptop to take notes, but now after about half an hour the battery indicator says i have an hour left. It is very annoying!

  • BW G3 Down after Security Updates

I have an older BW G3 that's running some version of 10.1 or something close to that. We just use it to run a scanner. After running a few minor OS updates that included a security update and something else, I have a system that boots up, but doesn't activate the monitor.
I can tell it's running because I get audio feedback on sound volume changes. During startup, the amber light on the monitor turns green for about 3 seconds as though it's trying to activate it. The same boot up symptoms happen when I try to boot from a CD, too. I've zapped the PRAM and removed a lot of the extra RAM.
Any ideas? I don't do big OS updates anymore because I know I'm "pushing it" with this system anyway. Hope someone can help. I don't know how else to proceed.

    Paul:
That's great! There have been some reports on one of the Security Updates causing problems, but not of the sort you are experiencing. It is very difficult to pinpoint these things. In any case you are back in business. Good for you.
    Good luck.

  • Start up problems after Safari 3.1 and Security update

Updated safari and security update last night.
Safari downloaded and installed but there was an error downloading or installing the security update, I forgot.
After I restarted everything booted up fine, but was stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen.
Did a fsck and zap the pram, still stuck.
Today I tried booting up in safe mode, stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
Then I tried booting up from an external firewire dvd drive. Repaired permissions, repaired the disk, but it is still stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen. Help please...
    Thank you

Ok i had a similar problem, with all the recent updates for Leopard, including the 10.5.2 combo update... the 12" PowerBook G4 kept getting stuck on the grey apple and spinning wheel... if it managed to get past this it would get stuck on the blue screen!!!
The way i got around this, after trying all these other tips was: Archived & Installed 10.5; restarted, waited; downloaded 10.5.2 Combo update, installed; restarted, waited; waited; waited; after getting back to desktop, restarted, waited; then ran Software Update only installing one at a time, and after each install, restarted, waited; when all Software updates completed, proceeded with iLife updates etc... It took a while (still quicker than the 3 days of failed installs and updates) with a lot of waiting on the blue screen (5-20mins) but we got there in the end. Disks where checked with Leopard Disk Utility before and after, permissions where checked before and after completing all installs, also with a DW 4.1 optimization. Also note worthy is the RAM was upgraded from the initial 256Mb (!!!) with an extra Gb.

  • Beware the Security Update - How I fixed my WIFI problem and a question

First of all I have read the "Latest Update from 21 January is A Disaster" thread and I basically agree with Andrew is Stuck so please don't feel the need repeat any of the stuff about it is not a bug in the update etc etc and I should have a Super Duper clone to hand etc etc . I have read that stuff. You are probably right but they should write on the Security Update info panel - "Be Careful this could really ruin your day".
I am ****** off and stressed out and I need to rant and I am not looking for that kind of lecture - even if it is partially or wholly true. I need to feel positive by warning people the way I wish I had been warned!
NB I am near the end of a professional dance tour as Musical Director running music on Logic on my MBP and it has been working fantastic - not a single glitch in 6 weeks. I would never upgrade my OS or Logic in the middle of job like this BUT Security Updates have always seem like something you should install because they will protect the Mac or protect against any new viruses etc. I have never had a problem with them before. (THAT ATTITUDE WILL NOW CHANGE!!!)
This update has caused a lot of people a lot of problems (check out this forum) and it has caused me more real world problems than anything I have downloaded and installed from anywhere in the last 3 years. Thus it has nothing to do with Security!!! HOw any people does a Security Uodate have to goose before it becomes an unsatisfactory Security Update?
This security update suddenly stopped my WIFI working and put me in a real hole.
(I am sure you don't care but I have a meeting tomorrow morning that I needed to do 3 hours of prep for including looking at VIDEO online. And the Security Update has just put paid to that. )
After 3 hours I have just got WIfi back- here's how:
I repaired permissions twice with Disk Utility - no joy. I found I could get online when I booted in Safe Mode (and I could get online with my Iphone on the same WIFi setup) so I knew it was not the router - though I did switch the router on and off a few times,
When I initially ran Repair permissions there was loads of things needing repair. I ran it again and 2 remained:
usr/share/derby it keeps trying to repair
and one of the package contents of the ARDAgent.app (System>Library>CoreServices>RemoteManagement>ARDAgent.app>Contents>MacOS>ARDAg ent) had a warning attached that it in the Disk Utility Repair Permissions report that it had been modified.
So I restored ARDAgent.app from a Time Machine Back up and replaced the offending file when in Safe Mode (Restart with Shift held down). - using Ctrl Click to open the ARDAgent.app package contents.
This seemed to sort it all out for me.
I guess people need to look in their Disk Utility Repair Permissions reports and see if any esoteric system files have been goosed by the update and see if they can get them back - although if you don't know what you are doing this could make things worse......
    Anyway I DO have questions:
    If this hadn't of worked:
    1) Would reinstalling Snow Leopard from disks have upset my preferences, installs of Logic and Audio drivers and 3rd party application installs and the rest?
    - the main stressor when this happens is not trying to lose the whole day.
    2) Is there a way of just restoring the System from a Time Machine Backup or a SuperDuper clone or do you have to restore the whole state of the entire Hard Drive?
    Best

PS I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

The fact that you saw no glitches while running Logic before applying the update means almost nothing because that uses only a small subset of system resources. Far more significant is that Safe Mode restored some missing functionality: because it disables non-essential items like user fonts, third party drivers, & so on, it points to problems in those areas.
Equally significant, the fact that there are relatively few reports of post-update problems among the several million Snow Leopard users points away from the update itself as the cause of your problems.
Separate & apart from that, it so happens that I'm a sound engineer/system designer/board operator with nearly 40 years of professional touring experience. FWIW, I never have & never will update the software of any system I must rely on professionally (whether it is running on a Mac, a PC, or dedicated hardware) unless & until I can thoroughly test it first and I have a trustworthy backup/recursion strategy to fall back on in case of problems.
I strongly suggest you learn from your unpleasant experience & do the same. I have had far fewer problems with Macs than with PC's, but nothing is 100% reliable to begin with. Changing the OS software part way through the tour is just asking for trouble, no matter how reliable that has been in the past. Even if the budget allows for nothing better than a stack of burned CD's & a couple of consumer grade CD players, no professional tour can afford to be without some fallback strategy in place. That should be self-evident & require no warning from Apple or anybody else.

I tried using the downloaded update. It still didn't work but at least I did not have to restart my computer. The message was a little different too: "The installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Run through this list of fixes, either something is corrupted or you have malware that's blocking the update.

Make sure to backup your users files to a external storage drive first (not only TimeMachine as it may fail to restore) and disconnect, because if' it's a drive corruption/failing then the entire thing will either have to be replaced or a wipe and install done.

  • Printing problems after installing Security Update 2015-002

After installing Security Update 2015-002 on three separate computers on two different WiFi networks, printers on the network are losing their connections to the computers that can print to them. We have experienced this on a network running a Canon printer and an HP printer - both have disappeared on the network although the printer suggests it is still connected to the network. The same thing has happened on a separate network I manage with a single HP printer on that network. I have tried removing the printers, resetting the printers etc. Nothing is working. I can get one print out of a printer when I turn the printer off and then on. Three minutes later the printer is no longer connected to the computer - although still connected to the network. Please Help.

I think I have figured out that it is in fact the Apple Extreme Base Station that is losing the printer. It is very odd because the printer is connected to the Wifi. My computer is connected to the WiFi and connecting to the internet. The Router for the internet can see the printer. An Apple Extreme is then connected via a network cable in Bridge mode to the router. When I turned the power off the The Apple Extreme and then restored power it all worked. was still working this morning, but again this afternoon I needed to reboot Apple Extreme. It is quite strange that this is happening on two different Networks in different parts of the country at the same time. Maybe the Security Update is somehow affecting/blocking communication with the printer? I just don't know enough. These networks have been up and running with the same printers and computers for years with zero problems - all of a sudden we have the same problem on both Networks.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • Airport problems after 8/12 airport and security update

My MacBook Pro which had been working flawlessly since I got it last year received the airport and security updates distributed today. After the reboot my airport turns itself off after a few minutes and will not come back on and the computer seems to be running hotter than usual. Booting from a recent clone of the drive without the updates did not fix the problem and the card turned itself off a few minutes after the reboot and will not come back on.
Anyone having similar problems after the update?

Does your problem occur only when unplugged. If so, then maybe this update is for you: http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro. Check it out, but use your own judgment in installing; not much info is provided.
