8.1.6 to 9iR2

Hello,
I've got:
- Machine1 with NT and Oracle 8.1.6
- Machine1 with W2K and Oracle 9iR2
I plan to do:
1- Export of my db on Machine1
2- Create the tablespaces on Machine2
3- Import the dump genrated in step 1 to Machine2
I read that in case of upgrade from 8.1.6 to 9iR2 on a mchine, the 8.1.6 base has to be prior upgraded to 8.1.7
Question1: in my case (expot and import on a different machine) do I have to upgrade my Machine1 to 8.1.7 before exporting my db ? I can guess I do but I'd need your expert point of view to tell me why.
Question2: how should I proceed to export my db and the users as well ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks&Regards,
Guillaume.

Note however that there is a note on Metalink that indicates that full exports from 8.1.6 to 9.2 are not supported, despite the general rules in the linked Utilities manual. Personally, I've never seen a problem with this sort of thing, personally, but I assume someone out there has.
Technically, the supported paths are to do a series of non-full exports (tablespace by tablespace or user by user) exports from 8.1.6 and import those into 9.2 or to upgrade the source database to 8.1.7 first. A full export and import will work 99% of the time, but I probably wouldn't want to wager that my mission critical system wouldn't fall into that 1%.

    Hi
CRS_HOME must be owned by a different user:group (preferably root) than $ORACLE_HOME (owned by oracle), for several reasons like patching.
Please note also that you will need an ASM dedicated home and also a AGENT_HOME that can be owned by oracle.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a way to create 8.1 compatible db via 9iR2's dbca?

    Hi,
I just installed 9iR2, and am trying to create the first database. But database configuration assistant insists to put 9.2 as compatible parameter in init.ora. If I try to change it, creation will fail with:
    ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-00406: COMPATIBLE parameter needs to be 9.2.0.0.0 or greater
If I let it creates the db with compatible=9.2.0.0.0, and try to change init.ora afterwards to make compatible 8.1.0, the database startup fails with:
ORA-00402: database changes by release 9.2.0.0.0 cannot be used by release
    8.1.0.0.0
ORA-00405: compatibility type "Locally Managed SYSTEM tablespace"
So it seems that dbca created the db with 9iR2's new locally managed system tablespace feature. Is there a way to disable this and let dbca create a db compatible with 8.1.0?
    Thanks

Are you sure? The Oracle 9i Database Migration doc says:
"Oracle enables you to control the compatibility of your database with the
COMPATIBLE initialization parameter. By default, when the COMPATIBLE
initialization parameter is not set in your parameter file, it defaults to the lowest
possible setting for the release, which is 8.1.0 for all Oracle9i releases."
And Figure 5-1 on page 5-3 shows for 9.2, the parameter "Can be set to 9.2.z, 9.0.y, or 8.1.x".
I'm not a DBA, I installed Oracle to develop software, and the requirement says the software should be compatible with both 8.1 and 9i, that's why I'm aiming for the lowest compatible level.
    Thanks

  • New feature of 9iR2: List Subpartitioning

    Hi,
I'm currently working on a DWH project using Oracle 9iR2.
I'm thinking of using the new feature of 9iR2 alowing the composite partitioning with list subpartitioning.
I was wondering if anyone has some practical experience with that new feature. Are there many bug/problems related to it?
    Thanks for any feedback

  • Subject:  DBConnection fails from 64Bit OS to 32Bit OS using Oracle 9iR2.

    Message:
Hi, I have a problem connecting to Oracle Database in the following scenario. Anybody's help is very much appreciated.
    Scenario:
    1. I have two servers [Say A - with Windows server 2003 (x64 bit edition) and Say B - with Windows server 2003 (32 bit edition)]
    2. Oracle 9iR2 (32bit) Database is installed on B.
    3. Oracle 9iR2 (32bit) Client is installed on A.
    4. I have an application (running as service) developed using C++ on A.
    5. I use the oraOLEDB to connect to the database (9.2.0.1.0)
    6. When the application is running in debug/release mode the connection gets established.
    7. When the application is running in the service mode I always get the following error "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name"
    8. I have verified the TNSNAMES.ORA file and the contents are valid.
    9. Listerner is running fine on both the systems.
NOTE; I have to use only OLEDB. Please do not suggest me to use any other connection mechanism.
    Do I miss something here?
    Thanks.

Basically ORA-12154 means, service name can't be found in tnsnames.ora or this file can't be located at all. Are there multiple ORACLE_HOMEs on the machine ? Is the application based on OLEDB running in a different home , NOT in the client's ORACLE_HOME? You may set TNS_ADMIN, pointing to your tnsnames.ora, as global environment variable. So each application on the machine will know this location.
I'm sure this is not a problem 64bit versus 32bit.

  • Migration Oracle 9iR2 - Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, please, help

    Good day!
Now I study examples from tutorial book "Oracle 9iR2 Data Warehousing"
(translated to Russian) written by Lilian Hobbs, Susan Hilson, Shilpa Lawande. However my Oracle is "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition" and ( as I thought ) for this reason I can't perform these examples.
Please, help me, if it no hard.
First example founded on using "Oracle Database Configuration Assistant"
and "Oracle Enterprise Manager Console". However, I not found them at
    "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition".
Now I use only "Oracle Application Express" ( and SQL ). Please, tell me,
if "Application Express" has enough functionality with comparision to
"Oracle Database Configuration Assistant" and "Oracle Enterprise Manager Console"
and how I need to do ? (It must, because 10 > 9)
Second example founded on using SQL. First 80% SQL-commanfs of this executed succesfully. But command "CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases" has error message
"PARTITIONing is not available." Really, in "2 Day Developer Guide"
(SQL Reserved Words ) PARTITION is not exist.
Can I CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases by "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition"
(with PARTITIONing by other means of SQL )?
There is full text of this SQL-Command:
    CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases
    (product_id varchar2(8)
    constraint not_null_product_id NOT NULL
    constraint fk_product_id
    REFERENCES product(product_id),
    time_key date
    constraint not_null_time NOT NULL
    constraint fk_time
    REFERENCES time(time_key),
    customer_id varchar2(10)
    constraint not_null_customer_id NOT NULL
    constraint fk_customer_id
    REFERENCES customer(customer_id),
    purchase_date date,
    purchase_time number(4,0),
    purchase_price number(6,2),
    shipping_charge number (5,2),
    today_special_offer varchar2(1)
    constraint special_offer
    CHECK (today_special_offer IN ('Y','N')) )
    PARTITION by RANGE (time_key )
    partition purchases_jan2002
    values less than (TO_DATE('01-02-2002', 'DD-MM-YYYY'))
    pctfree 0 pctused 99
    storage (initial 64k next 16k pctincrease 0)
    tablespace purchases_jan2002,
    partition purchases_feb2002
    values less than (TO_DATE('01-03-2002', 'DD-MM-YYYY'))
    pctfree 0 pctused 99
    storage (initial 64k next 16k pctincrease 0)
    tablespace purchases_feb2002,
    partition purchases_mar2002
    values less than (TO_DATE('01-04-2002', 'DD-MM-YYYY'))
    pctfree 0 pctused 99
    storage (initial 64k next 16k pctincrease 0)
    tablespace purchasee_mar2002 );
Naturally, I also shall continue try find solution.
    Winni.

    Winni,
Partitioning is only available with Oracle Enterprise Edition.
Here is a list of features by edition:
    http://www.oracle.com/database/product_editions.html
DBCA is not needed with Express edition because you can only have one XE database per server, and all options are pre-configured.
Enterprise Manager Console is not included with XE - only with the other editions.
You can get most of the functionality through SQL, Application Express and SQL Developer.

  • PL/SQL update not working against 9iR2 DB

    Hi,
I am having a weird problem with several forms when run against a 9iR2 database. I have worked out that the problem only happens when referencing an unbound item in the WHERE clause of the update clause. For example:
    UPDATE table_a
    SET column_a = 'A value'
    WHERE column_b = :block.unbound_item;
When I generate forms from Designer with this type of PL/SQL in a when-button-pressed trigger, it works fine against an 8.1.7 DB but does not update the record against a 9iR2 DB. If I put a specific value in the WHERE clause instead of referencing the unbound item, then it works. It also works if I put the value of the unbound item in a variable and then use the variable in the WHERE clause.
If I create a simple form using Form Builder, which does not link to Headstart libraries, then it does work against a 9iR2 DB. I also tried generating a simple form out of Designer from a container not linked to Headstart libraries and that worked as well.
Has anyone come across this sort of thing before?
    Thanks.
    Pierre.

    Pierre,
I have heard from another customer that had a similar problem. I have not had time yet to investigate his solution, but maybe it can help you:
For the other customer it seems to work fine if the update raises a CAPI error, but it does not work if the update raises a server error or a TAPI error (PK/UK/FK violation). The problem is that the rollback in abort_transaction is not executed.
The other customer proposes the following solution:
    * in abort_transaction, don't clean up the error messages
    * in the exception handler of the button code, place the abort_transaction before the unhandled_exception.
Pierre, do you also use CDM RuleFrame? Can you try if the tips of the other customer work for you?
It sounds to me like this is a workaround for a database bug, which is OK, but it's better if the database bug is fixed. I would advise you to also check the available patches for 9iR2, or maybe report a bug yourself so a patch can be made in the future.
It may also be related to the optimizer mode. See thread Transactions fail when OPTIMIZER_MODE=choose .
    Hope this helps,
    Sandra Muller

  • Database Initialization Parameters Removal list 9iR2

I have seen Oracle Metalink Document: Database Initialization Parameters and Configuration for Oracle Applications Release 11i Doc ID: Note:216205.1

This document has a removal list and states that these parameters should be removed from the database initialization parameters file for 9iR2, while I can see some of the parameters being used which are hash_area_size, sort_area_size and optimizer_mode.
    Please clarify.
    Thank you
    Adith

You would need to set "hash_area_size" and "sort_area_size" if you have 8.1.7.X database. For 9i and 10g you do not need to set them, and this is exactly what is mentioned in the note.
If you check "Release-specific database initialization parameters for 9iR2 (9.2.0.X)", you will find the following:
As of 9i, the automatic memory manager is used. This avoids the need to manually tune sort_area_size and hash_area_size

  • Applying patch9.2.0.4 to existing 9iR2

    Hi,
during the upgrade of the patch everything is fine. I want to know if we have to do all post install tasks( mentioned in patch release documentation)or not before we can say the patch is complete--------- 9iRL2 to ..9.2.0.4.patch
My Q is , what if i don't see the file mentioned in the post installation tasks of the patch in my directory structure? namely oracle-home\bin\iodpatchca.bat
can i proceed without running this batch file with database upgrade?
my main aim is to upgrade 9i to 10g and it seems we need to apply the patch to do so.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance
    ksan

It all depends on what exactly you are upgrading. You should first have an inventory of the features you currently use, then proceed according to the document. This document is plain and straight forward. It explicitly states whether you can skip or not specific tasks, you should read it carefully before proceeding with installation of this patchset.
By the way, I suggest you to apply, if possible 9.2.0.8.0 instead of this specific patchset. As Oracle has stated this will be the last patchset for 9iR2, and from this moment on all CPU's will be based on the 9.2.0.8.0 patchset level.

  • Oracle 9ir2 Max length of element/field name?

Does anyone know what the max length of a element/field name can be in Oracle 9ir2?
    thanks,
    -mcd

Thanks.. So, the max length is still 30.. what about this:
Is this also true for the length of element names defined in an XML schema for use by Oracle XML DB?
There are two ways in which XDB can absorb a schema -- one that causes the XMLTYPE to be stored in a CLOB, the other causes the XMLTYPE to be broken down into relational tables behind the scenes. The latter uses the element names for the table names, so I'm assuming it would be restricted by the 30-character column name limit (unless XDB has some way of truncating the column names but preserving the element names). But what about the case where the XMLTYPE is stored in a CLOB? In theory, there's nothing limiting the length of the element name.

  • 9iR2 XSLT: disable-output-escaping bug if  input is escaped

If my interpretation of XSLT standards is correct, the "disable-output-escaping" attribute in the following example should output <table width="100%"> before the first attribute of the current element, and </table> after the last one. The overall result will be a valid HTML table. This is what happens if my browser (IE 5.5 SP2) or XMLSpy does the transform.
In 9iR2 (and also in 9iR1), however, the actual output is &lt;table width="100%"&gt; and &lt;/table&gt;.
