8.2.1 grays out remote speakers

I updated to iTunes 8.2.1 and now my remote speakers (which I access through my airport express) are grayed out. I've restarted my computer, unplugged and replugged the airport, and checked the iTunes prefs, making sure that "look for remote speakers with Airtunes" was checked. Don't know what else to try...
Any thoughts?
Thanks! --Brian

Hey Brian - here's how I did it. It takes some work - but really not that much.
I used AppZapper http://www.appzapper.com/ to remove ITunes completely. This uninstaller will remove all of the associated application extensions ITunes uses. In order to remove iTunes, you have to go into preferences of that application and 'uncheck' the "Keep default applications safe". (AppZapper is free for the first 5 uses)
Once you remove iTunes, you can download the previous version (8.2) from Softpedia at: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Download-iTunes-8-2-for-Mac-and-Windows-113083.sh tml
Download, install, and all should work. (You will have to review your preferences in iTunes, but the good news is the library catalog stays intact.
Let me know if you run into trouble.

  • "Access Control - Do Not Inherit" Grayed out when setting up a backup on Server 2008 R2 when trying to use remote NAS

    I see one response here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c99eead0-e2fc-4c83-8cb2-959d03512667/server-2008-r2-dc-backup-greys-out-do-not-inherit-option-for-file-share-backup
But it makes no sense to me. Running that command doesn't do anything.
How do I make the box stop graying out when setting up a backup with the GUI interface? This should be really simple I would think and for some reason the backup utility is graying out the "Do Not Inherit" option so I can backup to the NAS
device that has access control enabled in order to backup to the NAS.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
From this article, it mentioned that it is by design that we cannot choose "do not inherit" in backup schedule when backup target is a remote shared folder.
    Checklist: Schedule Automatic Backups
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732540.aspx
If you use a remote shared folder, make sure that the folder is available, that you have write access to the folder, and that you are a member of the Administrators group or Backup Operators group on the computer hosting the folder. Each time you create
a backup, it will overwrite the older backups so that you will only have one backup at a time.
The backup will inherit the access control list (ACL) permissions of the folder.
For the account it required, as mentioned above, it should be "a member of Admin group or Backup Operators group, and it should have write permission on target folder".
Also map a network folder as a drive will not help show the mapped drive letter in backup destination. It is still a remote shared folder.

  • Remote speakers in iTunes drop out

I have Airport Express connected to my PC via a DLink wireless adapter. Whenever the computer (Windows XP) is on the connection is made and never drops out. However if the the PC is on for an extended time, and iTunes has been open with the remote speakers connected, the speakers will drop out and the speaker name is italisied.
The only way to correct this is to turn off the power to the Airport Express and turn it back on.
The network is WEP encrpyted and there are no problems what so ever when the speakers are connected. It has been suggested that if the PC goes to sleep this may be the cause. But if it does the connection is still there, just iTunes wont recognise it as being there.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be great.
    Thanks!

Did you ever fix this? I am having the same issue!

  • Forget All Remotes Grayed Out In iTunes

I am using iTunes on 10.6.8.
Under the "Device Preferences" option in iTunes Preferences, it says that "iTunes is not paired with any Remotes." The "Forget All Remotes" is grayed out.
However, home sharing is turned on to "share entire library."
And, when I open the remote app on my iPhone and my iPad, it will play the selected songs I have chosen throught he remote app.
    But I can't unpair them.
Does anyone know why this is?

    Same issue here.
I recently bought a new laptop, authorised it for my iTunes account, etc, etc, transferred all my music, and everything was absolutely fine. HOWEVER, when I connected up my iPhone and transferred my App Purchases across to the new laptop(which was also fine incidentally), I found the iPhone screen in iTunes under the "Apps" tab is completely greyed out. I can't move apps around, and more irritatingly I can can't synch apps from iTunes to my iPhone. I've tried backing it up (which again works fine), checked every setting under the sun both in iTunes and on my iPhone, but no joy.
I've been scouring the net for answers and the only thing I've found is to check the Restrictions settings on my iPhone to ensure they are off. My apps Restrictions settings were already set to Off, so that's clearly not the problem. Both my iTunes and iPhone are running the latest versions and OS updates.
There seems to be literally hundreds of people with this problem if the threads on the net are anything to go by, but no-one seems to know the answer.
Any help very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Connect to Remote Host - Grayed Out

Hi, thanks for reading this...really appreciate.
Had just been connecting remotely w DW and now not able to. Can connect via Transmit, just fine. What do you think? Have shut down, restarted. Still the connect button greyed out. Also, can connect in the Site Management Settings area...when clicking 'Test'. It connects just fine.
As you can see, when it is not grayed out when romote view is not showing...when even when clicked, nothing happens:
The Repository Files button is activated. Dont even know what that is. Have been using DW since 2000. Ha! Maybe that is stopping something? Tried unclicking it, but whatever site definition I go to, the Repository Files button is still pushed down/activated.
    What do you think?
    Thanks so very much,
    Warmly Hope

Well, it is working now. Had to select 'remote' view, when in the non dual remote/local view of files. Weird. Now that Repository Files button isnt clicked any more either....
Thanks to all the 56 people who read this....must have done something.....
    Lots of bliss

  • ITunes 8: I can no longer connect to remote speakers via Airport Express

Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility
I get the following error code (-3256) Apple KB research says:
AirTunes: Error -3256 when streaming to multiple AirPort Express units
You may see this message: An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker speaker_name . An unknown error occurred (- 3256 ).This occurs with iTunes 6.0.2 or later.SolutionIf you use a third-party firewall or router, make sure that it is configured to permit UDP traffic.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303157
I followed the KB link, tried KB solution, then I sent this off to Apple.
"Mac G5 2.0 Ghz, OS 10.5.4 just installed iTunes 8, one (1) Airport Express connected to remote speakers. Firewall under Sharing in System preferences does not offer firewall access. Firewall is under Security but "Advanced" is grayed out.
Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility, unplugged the airport express.
My G4 PowerBook running an earlier version of iTunes connects without problem.

I just got off a 30+ minute phone call with an Apple Support rep about this. I'm getting error -3256. The rep was patient and tried hard to solve the problem, but was basically clueless. I have a case number and was encouraged to call back tomorrow to speak with a product support specialist.
This stinks. AirTunes is my primary way of playing music from my computer. With no obvious way of rolling back to iTunes 7, this is a big deal.

  • Airtunes issues - Cannot select Remote Speakers

I bought a new MacBook and am running Mac OS X (10.5.7) and using iTunes 8.2.
Previously I was able to play music through my remote speakers connected to my airport express using airtunes. With my new laptop, iTunes shows my speakers but they are greyed out and I can't actually select them. I can only select "Computer"
My iTunes preferences does have "Look for remote speakers connected with Air Tunes" selected.
Any ideas why it shows the speakers/base station but is greyed out and I can't select them?

I'm having the same problem with a G4 laptop running 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.2. I've tried random stuff like reconnecting the speakers to the Airport Express, restarting iTunes, renaming my airtunes speakers, etc. Some of this is obviously just desperate attempts to feel productive. If anyone can help figure out why I can see the name of the speakers on the menu in iTunes, but can't select them (they're grayed out) - I'd be stoked.

  • New iMac can't access remote speakers in iTunes

i use an airport express to play music from eMac to my stereo. This works fine. I just purchased a new iMac. I'm able to turn the Airport On in iTunes, and I can see my remote speakers, but the selection is grayed out. I've tried updating the firmware on the airport express, performing a soft reset, unplugging it, and nothing works. Thanks for your help!!!

  • Airport Utility all grayed out?

I use Airport Express / Utility v 5.1 on my iMac and it has worked well untill recently.
But now I can´t use Utility anymore to set up Airport again, most of the functions in Utility
are grayed out. When I tried to reinstall it I got the following message:
Airport can´t be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported.
I have installed Airport Express Client already plus an update of Utility v5.5.3
Unfortunately, I have still no green light on the unit and can´t use the speakers in the living room.

Hi, I seem to have the same problem.  Airport Utility 5.5.3 and recently upgraded to Itunes 10.4.  Wanted to play through my remote speakers which are plugged into the aiport express which is showing a green constant light, but Itunes said could not find remote speakers. I had to select computer speakers and then the option to select remote speakers at the bottom right of the itunes screen disappeared.  Ran Airport Utility but the scan said it could not find any airport wireles devices and most of the airport utility menu options are greyed out.
I use a BT homehub for internet access and nothing changed there.  Can you help please? Thankyou

  • Apple TV (1st gen) does not appear in remote speakers list

    Dear Fellow Forumers,
I am surprised that APPLE, a highly rated and respected company leaves such a great number of users like me sweating for months without any support.
It is a shame that the problems I encountered, and still do, are not repaired by a new upgrade or by a clear fixing procedure published here on the forum.
iTunes 9 with my Apple TV were working perfectly until my nightmare started few months ago when the I upgraded for the iTunes version 10.1.
Needless to list all the problems and fixes I went through. I just want to focus on the actual problem I have.
I run iTunes 10.1.1.4 on a Packard Bell Easynote with Windows Vista.
My Apple TV 1st gen. appears in device list on the left of the screen. I can select and synchronize my ATV with my iTunes. I can even use all the functionalities of my ATV when I operate it directly, including streaming music from my iTunes Library. But, I do not see my ATV in the list of the remote speakers on the right nottem side of the screen.
That means, I can not sit in fron of my laptop and stream music from my iTunes to my ATV. I should go, turn on the Telly and go through all the screens to choose the music I want to listen to streamed from my iTunes library.
I am really frustrated and surprised by the lack of attention to the customer service by Apple who is known to put out very reliable products.
I hope someone from the company will read my post and escalate its contests to the management to i,prove the llevel of reliability of such grand public products.
But first of all, I would be very grateful for any help resolving my problem.
Thanks in advance and best regards.
    Naass

Thanks for all the helpful answers I received on this thread!!!!
Anyway, this morning I received the notification to download the 10.1.2.17 which I did. This resolved my problem.
I am still a bit sceptical that the same symptom my return as it happened the same way in the past.
    Fingers crossed!!

  • Can't always connect to remote speakers since upgrading to lion

In one fell swoop I did a lot of upgrading, and ever since I haven't been able to reliably connect to any remote speakers using iTunes on my iMac.  From iTunes (or the Remote app on the phone or iPad) I can see remote speakers, but I cannot connect.  From iTunes, I just get the stripy progress bar, and it won't ever go away unless I cancel out.  From the remote app, it just becomes unrepsonsive.
    Context:
I have a iMac with OSX Lion, that I upgraded from Snow Leopard a few weeks ago. At about the same time, I updated iTunes to 10.5 from the last 10.4 release to be able to get the IOS 5 update on my and my wife's phones.
I have an Airport Extreme connected to our broadband, with 3 airport expresses in various places in our house connected on a wireless network to stereos for remote speakers.  The iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet.  After upgrading the OS and iTunes, I got a notice that there was a firmware update for my two most recent airports (the Extreme and one of the expresses).  They are running version 7.6 of the firmware, the other two airports are running 6.3.
There has been no change to the physical environment -- no sources of interference or anything like that.  I can play music from the Music app on my phone to any of the remote speakers, there is no problem there.
About half the time, if I restart everything (wireless base stations, and then the computer) I can get the remote speakers to work.  However, the next time the computer wakes up from sleep mode, I have the same connection problem described above.
Has anyone else experiences these sorts of troubles?  I have seen some similar problems with older versions of all these applications and OS's -- and the solution there was to turn off ipV6 -- however, it doesn't look like that's an option now.  Is this an identified bug, and is there a fix on the way?  Is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Well, after some experimentation and internet-lookin', I deduced that is possibly a wi-fi problem.  It seems that many people are having wi-fi problems since upgrading to Lion, and although I'm not connecting directly to my wireless network, it does form a pretty big chunk of my setup describe above.
So I tried the fix outlined on OSX Daily here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/06/lion-wi-fi-problems-solution-mac/
Essentially what it has you do is to create a new network location, name it, and then renew your DHCP lease.  This seems to have worked for the time being.

  • Using Bose system to drive remote speakers via Airport Express / iTunes

I want to connect my Airport Express which is configured for remote speakers in iTunes to my Bose system. My question is which input on the Bose Lifestyle 50 system do I use; ie which input on the "multi-room interface" do I connect to the AE. I think it must be the "aux" but before I buy a suitable cable I would like to be sure.

Use a mini-jack to double RCA. That is all that I used. In the past I have used my APExpress and used the audio out port and all I needed was a mini-jack to double RCA.I have a TV, and a DVD player interfaced through my Denon AVR driving Bose Acoustimass 10 speakers.
