8 ~ 20 Gigs backups. Every day?
Hi all,
My timemachine is backing up around 8 to 20 gigabytes a day.
But I do not process that much information in a day.
The only thing I do during the day is develop iPhone apps (I only touch source code. No images or other larger files). Besides that, I google for help on the SDK.
When arriving back at home, I notice timemachine going about it's thing for long periods of time, processing way too much data imo.
What's going on?
use TimeTracker http://www.charlessoft.com/ or BackupLoupe http://www.soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/ to see what exactly is being backed up every time.

Hi All,
for the last few days for some reason, Time Machine (using Time Capsule) is backing up entire content of my disk (86 GB) once a day. After this is done, it creates incremental backups as it should, but on the next day, again full backup is being taken
I'm not sure what's causing this behavior, I did permission repair but this is still the case
Any help is most appreciated.DanInDub wrote:

Is that on the first backup after powering-up your Mac? If so, the preferences file may be corrupted. Try a "full reset," per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
New complete backup every day?
Odd problem. Why does Time Machine try to create what seems to be a completely new back up of my hard disk each day? My understanding is that it's suppose create a master backup the first time you install, which it did for me. No problem. From then on, it's only suppose to backup changes. In my case, it does indeed do small hourly incremental backups, but it also does a huge backup once a day, in the neighborhood of 82 GB. What's up?
Unfortunately in my case it does look like it's Aperture. I removed my Aperture library from the backup (added to the exclude list) and that fixed it.
I wonder what yours is. Do you have any apps that have around 82GB of data? iTunes? iPhoto? That's all I can think of.
Start up Console and select "All Messages" on the left and then use the search bar on the top right to look for "launchd". That might reveal a clue or two. -
Every day my 3GS cellularly transmits about 1 gig of data, eating up my monthly limit. How do I determine what's doing it so I can stop it?
I'm told that sometimes you can figure out what apps are sending data via Settings -> General -> About -> Automatically Send, and then the following day, look at the Diagnostic & Usage Data.
The data is rather cryptic, so even if it is in there, it may not be easy to figure out. -
My Time Capsule keeps saying "backup failed" due to the network password not being correct. I have not changed my password and every day I have to type the same one in and then it works. But then the same thing happens the next day. Can anyone help? This only started doing this about 2 weeks ago.
Hello,
Mac OS X 10.4 Help, I forgot a password in my Keychain

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1544
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. -
My problem is that the backups made are huge - I'm talking of 60 to 200 GB every day and the harddisk is "just" 250GB full.
Yes, I'm using Parallels on my MacBook and yes, I have checked that the VM should not be backuped...and yes, in addition I have excluded the folders /Applications and /Documents...and yes, I have already reset the TC and started all over again. Nothing I have tried works. In my understanding it should only backup the files that have changed since the last backup and this can't be more than a few MB.
I would be very thankful for any hint what's wrong with my settings. Thanks, Jolly.
I've installed the latest combo update and repaired the rights...this worked for 3 weeks now. Today I had again a 189GB backup and I went through the process again...and it's working correctly again. Nevertheless the problem seems unsolved. -
IMPORTANT: No more "backup every time" or endless apple logo crashes!
So after 11 crashes where the iPhone wouldn't come back after bootup, I had enough. I took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it. Since then, it crashed 2 more times. Yet again, had enough, and decided to try some experimenting.
Using this method, I have had no more crashing issues. What's more, the iPhone ONLY tried to do a backup the first time, and doesn't even try (I don't have to press the X) when I sync now. IF you are suffering from the endless apple logo crash, *TRY THIS:*
1. Unplug your iPhone. If you're stuck at the logo, press the power/lock and home buttons at the same time. Hold them until the phone shuts off
2. Hold down the home button and plug in the sync cable while holding. Do not let go of the home button until the screen shows up with a cable connecting to iTunes on the phone
3. Press the button to recover your phone. Wait for the Recovery to finish and the phone to reset
4. Go into EDIT > PREFERENCES > SYNCING on iTunes. Delete all old backups that you feel comfortable deleting (I got rid of all of them). Also (*VERY IMPORTANT*), click the checkbox next to "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods".
5. Select the radio button to set your iPhone up as a new iPhone. Wait for activation.
6. Click to sync whatever you want on the Info, Ringtones, Photos, Podcasts, Music, and Movies tabs. *MAKE SURE YOU SELECT NOT TO SYNC APPS.*
7. Perform a sync, then eject the phone
8. Set up any config you want (email accounts, settings, ringtones, etc)
9. Plug the phone in and press the sync button (it will not autosync). When you do, it will sync and take a backup. This backup takes about 3 seconds.
10. Go to the Apps tab and select to sync ONLY clicked apps. Unclick all apps.
11. Add your apps one at a time, like so: click the checkbox next to one app, press sync (takes a small amount of time per app). Once the app is done installing per iTunes, look at your iPhone. You'll notice the little spinning internet indicator at the top left is still spinning. Wait until it is done!
12. Repeat step 11 until finished. Click the checkbox, press sync, wait, *ONE APP AT A TIME*. iTunes will not try to backup every time.
When you're done, eject your iPhone, move things around, do all your logins you have to redo since it crashed, etc. If you want to, plug the iPhone back in. It will not auto-sync since you turned that off. You can click on another app, click sync, and it syncs the new app WITHOUT a backup!
*_WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS A PROBLEM SYNCING AN APP_*
If you try to sync an app (one at a time), and during the sync someone calls you or you get an error in iTunes saying the app had a problem, go to your Apps tab, UNCHECK the app you were just trying to sync, and press sync again. Allow it to de-install fully, then click the box and press sync again to try one more time.
*_WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PHONE STARTS TO LAG_*
I don't know if this is a good idea or if it is approved, but when I open a bunch of different programs, my phone starts to get slower and slower. I also notice that when you go into a program you've already opened, it's usually quicker than the previous time. So I'm not sure if this is like OSX, where closing an app doesn't free it up, only by right click closing does it truly close. So here's what I do:
Go into an app you've already exited. Instead of exiting again, hold down the Home button for about 6 seconds until the app disappears. That seems to cause it to truly close, and the phone will work faster on other things. Now as a disclaimer, you MIGHT be crashing the app...I don't know. But it seems to help.Hmm. This sounds pretty similar to my problem. I have gone through three iPhone 3Gs so far in Japan.
Basically, got two iPhones on launch day, probably the first two sold in my area (White and Black). One for my wife and one for myself. I have a new iMac with 4GB and a year old Macbook Pro 17 with 2GB.
Each iPhone was synced separately on different computers with different iTunes accounts (Leopard). I have a US and a Japan iTunes account, my wife a Japan iTunes account.
Anyway, I bought some apps on both sides (Japan and US iTunes sides sepperate computers) and none ever completed there installs. In fact they rebooted the iPhone (both of them) and iTunes crashed. When the iPhones rebooted sometimes the app was on the iPhone other times not.
Sometimes the crash was so bad the iPhone would not boot up at all and I did a firmware restore (think I have done this 18 times so far). But the problem persisted and not a single app on either iPhone or either computer would install without first crashing iTunes and the iPhone.
At some point, the crash was so bad the firmware restore no longer worked and basically bricked the phone entirely as it refused to recognize the SIM or iTunes and couldn't even do a restore. I brought that back to Softbank (the carrier in Japan) they had some tech folks look at the phone.
After scratching there head, switching SIMS and plugging it into various computers, and doing a bunch of other things they replaced my iPhone with another new one from some special inventory they had of factory new phones in cardboard shipping boxes with no packaging except for the sealed phone itself (no wires). I believe these where meant to be loaners while your phone was being sent back to Apple for servicing (this is what I was told afterward in a voicemail message which I still have from Softbank apologizing for the trouble).
My wifes never died completely but I have stopped installing any apps on it because it still crashes on installs AND removals. It never successfully installed anything without first crashing the phone and iTunes.
Here's the kicker, as of yesterday morning I was on phone number two, and it was still crashing on installing ANY software from the App store, free or otherwise, via iTunes, or directly from the app store...
Guess what, it died yesterday and had a blank screen and wouldn't boot at all nor would restore work at all. So today, I went to Softbank again and got it replaced once again (a loaner for the loaner), with a new one no questions asked AND guess what, there was a very upset guy sitting with a store rep with EXACTLY the same problem I had and I overheard the Softbank rep on the phone speaking to another Softbank store I assume asking for another loaner iPhone as they no longer had any loaners left in the store because they lent them all out.
So being a noisy guy that I am, I asked sympathetically, 'Hey, sounds like Apple is giving you guys a lot of grief.' The guy told me they had replaced 28 iPhones that day at his branch alone because they couldn't revive the phones (forget about activating them) and Apple was not being very helpful. So they have been mailing them to some service center in the US (I was told) where Apple techs where going over the handsets to get some firm answers.
So now, I have been thru 3 new iPhone 3Gs that have exactly the same problem on two different computers and a forth one that does the same and a guy at the store next to me getting a replacement phone for the same reason and a store that is out of loaners cause they got so many returned dead.
The fact that Softbank is not even looking at my phone anymore and simply replacing it tells me this is a systemic and a widespread problem at least in Japan and causing Softbank great grief and I am not too amused myself as I got better things to do then visiting cell stores and restoring firmware.
So clearly there is something very wrong with our beloved iPhone 3Gs firmware or possibly the phone itself or Japan got junk sent over.
"Apple, fix this problem because you don't want to end up with tens of thousands of dead iPhones on your doorstep do you? -- if you don't already have a truckload from Japan and you might want to fix the 3G reception while your at it cause its embarrassingly terrible in 3G rich Japan."
Aside from that, I do really love the iPhone and Apple, but love does have its limits and I am starting to feel that I am in an abusive relationship. -

3 different external hard drives keep disconnecting every day -HELP
I have 3 external hard drives on my 2.7GHz Core i5 iMac. It's got 16 gigs of memory. One external drive is in a basic external case and 2 are exposed on my desk using an Adapter Converter Cable. I've never had this kind of problem with these hookups in the past. And it's completely random. They work for a day or 2 at most and then suddenly when I wake the machine 1-2 or all 3 have dropped out and I have to unplug and restart the drive. The internal drive has never done this - it has 2 partitions. It rarely happens WHEN I'm actually using the machine and it's never happened when the computer was reading or writing to the drive and caused any corruption that I know of.
It started when I first hooked them up right after I got the iMac and has been the same every day since. I can't remember if it happened with SnowLeopard or if it started when I installed Lion a day or two after I got the machine. I have not tried booting into Leopard to test that.
2 of the drives came from my old G5 and one is new - all Seagate

Thank you for any help with this,
JayJay,
No where did you mention how the EHD's are connected. Is it USB, Firewire, FW800 and if so are they connected directly to the back of the computer or via a hub. If they're USB are they bus powered or powered with external power? You need to be specific so we can begin helping.
If they're USB drives with external power and are connected directly to the back of the computer then try doing a SMC reset 2-3X.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer. -
I'm losing 2GB of free disk space every day. How can I prevent this?
Every day this week I notice that I lose about 2GB of free disk space on my MacBook Pro. I'm now down to 20GB. When I started the week, I had over 30GB. I haven't installed any new programs of signficance. I store my large documents (photos, music, movies) on an external hard disk. While the MBP is not giving me problems, performance-wise, I'm concerned about the constant loss of free space.
I checked the size of my sleepimage and swapfile in /private/var/vm and they appear to be normal. The sleepimage size remains constant at 4.29GB and there is only one swapfile that is using 67.1 megs.
I don't seem retain disk space even after clearing the User and System caches, repairing permissions, and restarting my computer.
I checked my recent Console messages and here is a short snippet:

I reviewed my Login Items and there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary there that could be chewing up disk space.

Alarm notification comes up every day even though I deleted the alarm
I use my iPhone 4 as an alarm clock in the morning. I use the built-in alarm clock app instead of a nother because it seems to deal best wtih ignoring the silent switch, so I'm more likely to wake up.
My schedule changed, so I disabled an alarm and created another. However, I still get notifications from the disabled alarm. I even tried deleting the alarm, and I still get the notification dialog box (NOTE the alarm doesn't sound, I just get the system modal dialog box) every day. What's worse, the notification comes up 5 or 6 times every morning! The same notification for the alarm I already deleted.
I went to the genius bar today, and the guy said I need to completely wipe my phone without restoring my data!!!!! Seriously? Lose all my contacts, calendars, databases, etc and havey to re-enter them?? Really?
Ther'es got to be another solution. I thought push notifications come from Apple, and aren't even triggered by the device anyway. If that's the case the problem may be more on Apple's side than mine.
Thoughts? Thanks.I am wondering what you mean with the disk image that you mention and if that could cause the large backup size, especially if it is not a sparsebundle type image.
If you already have a separate partition on your HD, I would have moved the "iPhoto Library" file from your account's Pictures folder to that partition.
Then you would need to create a symbolic link (not an Alias) from there back to the Picture folders of the accounts that you want to share your iPhoto library with. You will of course also modify the access rights to allow the other account(s) to write to the library file.
I followed a slightly different approach on my Mac, where the "iPhoto Library" now is in the Shared Users folder (/Macintosh HD/Users/Shared) and I linked it back into my and another account via the Terminal app (e.g. "ln -s /Macintosh HD/Users/Shared/iPhoto Library /Macintosh HD/Users/me/Pictures").
The iPhoto automatically recognizes the library without any changes and you could read from and write to that library from multiple accounts.
This works perfectly fine for me and I never had trouble with large backups or corrupt data (at least not yet ;-). -
What's worse than leaving your iPhone in a hot car every day?
Plugging your iPhone in to charge +*before you go to bed every night*+..... and I would guess that's what most people do.
Seriously, if you believe in the first chart of this well know battery site - http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm - you can see that a Li-ion battery suffers more permanent capacity loss, for any given length of time, by sitting at 100% charge, then it loses by sitting in 104F temps on a partial charge. (After 1 year, 20% loss from 100% charge @ 77F, vs 15% loss from 104F temps with a 40% "storage charge.")
So, given that it takes about an hour to fully charge an iPhone, if you plug it in before you go to sleep, it ends up just sitting there 5-7hrs at 100% charge and probably worse off than leaving it in a 104F car for the same amount of time.
Solution... try to minimize the amount time that the phone sits at 100% charge and maximize the time it sits at about half charge (40% being the ideal storage charge) by:
a) Getting a light timer (about 4$) and set it to charge your phone the hour before you normally wake up. Let the phone sit at a lower charge level all night while you sleep. No difference to you, as you still plug it in before you go to sleep.
b) Getting a AA back-up charger (iGo, Duracell, Adrenalinetechnologies "Turbo Charge" make them) so you don't always have to worry about "topping off" the battery. (I'm not fond of Li-ion backups for the above, and other, reasons).
c) Use partial charges when appropriate. (Note that partial charges may require more recalibration, however.)
d) Anyone got any other ideas?I think you are talking trivialities here. That chart refers to long term storage, not short term situations like overnight. Second, while Isidor Buchmann knows his stuff no doubt, that web pave is 4-5 years old, and current Li-polymer batteries have made pretty big advances in just the last couple of years. And third, since for most iPhone users, the battery is going to have an effective life span of 1-2 years (400-500 full equivalent charge cycles) at most, the slight loss in capacity directly attributable to sitting charged over night is hardly worth fussing about.
I just see it as way to much ado about nothing. There are far too many legitimate things to worry about every day - this is just not one of them.
P.S. And I do leave mine plugged in overnight, in a dock, since it is my alarm clock and quite honestly, I don't want to have to remember to plug it in come morning when I'm running about trying to get out the door to get to work. I just want to be able to grap it at anytime and know it is fully charged and good to go. I plug it in when I get to my office - I plug it in whenever convenient, regardless of charge state. -
Calendar events showing every day
Hi all,
Recently it seems that when my Calendar app is displaying month view, every day has a little square in it - the one that indicates an event. However, about half of my days have no events at all.
I have repeating events set every eight days for four days (for my four-on four-off shift rotation) but that's about all. I'm sure I remember it used to show correctly, i.e. blocks of four with events and blocks of four without.
Anyone any ideas what's happened?
Thanks for reading
BBzI have the same problem. With me it is only on the "Birthdays" calendar which was uploaded from iCal to my calendar server before I went with syncing with CalDAV. The daily and list formats do not show anything weird, only the monthly view. I assume it is a problem with a repeating event, but I can't find it.
I've even done a reset and reload from backup of my iPod and it did not help. Next step is probably to delete the Birthday's calendar completely on my server and see if that cures the problem. I am waiting until there is an easy way to restore it on the server.
Any other ideas would be appreciated. -
Hey all,
I just posted this as feedback to Apple, but I would like to hear your opinions on this as well.
The problem is that my iTunes and computer are stuttering at the beginning of every song, because all my smart playlists have to be updated with the new information that the previous song has been played. This causes iTunes to freeze up for about 20 to 25 seconds at the start of every new song, despite having quite a fast computer with plenty of RAM.
The culprit of course is that I have a large library (13k songs), as well as dozens of smart playlists depending on each other. However, the question is whether I should be punished for this? After all, you want to fill up that 80GB iPod, no? Anyways, I'm suggesting an extra option that would get rid of these issues no matter how big your library is or how many smart playlists you've got.
The feature I'm suggesting that would get rid of this issue is the following: instead of updating all smart playlists 'realtime', give the user the option of doing this live updating real time, every x hours, every day or only at startup. You could give the user this option either for every playlist independently, or globally in the settings for iTunes. With this extra option, I would configure iTunes to update my playlists every 4 hours or something like that, and I would get the stuttering only every 4 hours instead of every 4 minutes, as it's right now.
Are there any other people who would like this option?
What do you think? Useful? Rubbish?
Sincerely,
Tijl KindtAre you sure that this is the problem? I have a 300 gig library with numerous interdependent smart playlists. I also mostly play iTunes over Airtunes. I don't have this problem. I do see some slowness in launching iTunes as a result of the smart playlists but once it's open, I don't have a problem. I'm guessing you turned live updating off on all the playlists to see if that solved the problem as I don't know how else you would have come to this conclusion.
The only short term fix I can see is to turn off live updating on at least some of the playlists and then turn it back on periodically. -
is it bad to use tc as a every day hard drive i use a 750 gb g drive for time machine an was jus wanting to kno if it was bad to do or is it jus like using any other hard drive
I'm not sure how to interpret your question. By "TC" do you mean "Time Capsule"? Do you have a Time Capsule? How is the 750 GB drive connected to the rest of your system? Are you asking if you can use for other things a volume that Time Machine is using for its backups? If so, that's not a good idea. For one thing, Time Machine by design will eventually consume all the space on that volume, which will cause problems for anything else you have on it. For another thing, Time Machine won't be backing up those files on the Time Machine disk, which means you'll only have one copy of them.
