8-Core Gaming

I am just wondering, at max new Mac Pro 8-Core purchase configurations, how good would it be at gaming? Max settings X-Plane? Max settings Call of Duty 2? Max settings Halo 2? How many frames per second? How hot would it get and how fast would the fans go? Does anybody know?

Big deal, if Apple wanted an 8-core system they should have stayed with PowerPC chips and made a machine with the Cell processor. If Intel is so good then why are all the major game companies including Microsoft have left them to go with IBM and the PowerPC based chips for their game machines. If PowerPC was not good why spend millions of dollars promoting these chips for. If they stayed with intel the Microsoft would have not spend time and money contracting programmers to continuously write OS updates for the Xbox 360 just to make it backwards compatible.
And for the question it is the graphics card that does most of the work not the Processors any engineer can tell you that. I have a older G4 running all those games on Max setting with an overclocked Graphics card.

  • IMac or Playstation 4?  Concerned that iMac won't be able to handle hard core gaming...

    Hi All,
Anyone think that the new generation of iMacs can handle hard core gaming?  I have a 21.5" with the NVidia 650 graphics card.
I had a 23" iMac a couple of years ago and went through 2 graphcs cards and a logic board before it was eventually replaced by Apple Care.  I don't want to repeat that exercise.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that won't happen with a game machine either.
Follow the specs of the machine and find out if the games are known to be compatible with the said computer.
Buy AppleCare before the machine is a year old if you get a Mac.

We put all the accessories together and boot up to check further detail on GT60 Dominator Pro 3K IPS version! The display quality is vivid.
Let’s take a look on the detail spec., 384GB SSD Super RAID, Intel Core i7 4800MQ @ 2.7GHz, top level GTX880M 8GB GDDR5 graphics, 32GB RAM. It’s all top level and could use for 3 more years of ultra-quality games!
When first time to use MSI gaming notebooks, you will feel amazing about the SteelSeries keyboard is really good typing feeling and solid based. It comes with multi-color backlit and move the windows key to right side, that really professional design as a gaming notebook keyboard, and the only one with real gaming design.
Take a look in the SteelSeries Engine, the exclusive gaming software only for MSI gaming notebooks. This macro keys software built in Keypress macro, Text macro, 1 key launch program and Disable key function, besides F1~F12, all other keys could be used for macros setup, and 4 layers of keyboards o setup 4 sets of macros with 4 sets of different backlit combinations, so this is really a great software for smarter and stylish gaming experience.
With CPU-Z tool to check, the upgraded Intel Core i7 4800MQ @ 2.7GHz, TDP 47W, 4 Cores 8 Threads is really great performance, CPU Boost could up to 3.5~3.7GHz.
Because of Core i7 4800MQ and GTX880M, the 3D benchmarks comes with breakthrough scores than ever on the notebook platform, 3D Mark Fire Strike: P5351 pts.
The GT60 Dominator Pro on 3D Mark 11 gains P8461 pts, it’s whole new level of the gaming notebooks, and It’s over 15% faster than GTX780M!
The 3D Mark Vantage boost up to P33115 scores, it’s 14% faster than GTX780M!
Then we check on other software of DirectX11 3D performance, the Heaven Benchmark is world’s 1st software tool to test DirectX11 effects, this time we use Heaven Benchmark version 3.0 to test.
Set the Tessellation on normal to enable DirectX11 effects and run Benchmark, the Full HD resolution could get 78.2 FPS(Frames Per Second) high score result.
Since this GT60 is 3K IPS panel edition, of course we have to try 3K resolution, you could see that the result block is smaller at 2880x1620 resolution, the result is 42.7 FPS with same setup, so we could say that 3K resolution will reduce over 45% of the FPS rate in this test, but GTX880M is too powerful, so still over 40FPS, and most games we need to get over 30 FPS to play and feel smoother, at least 20 FPS to play a game, if lower than 20 FPS, that will makes people feel lag obviously and feel dizzy easily.
Since we tried some benchmark, of course we have to try at least a famous game to the real world experience. Battlefield 4, the biggest FPS game title since end of 2013, is one of the heaviest loading games on PC platform.
First we made Battlefield 4 detail at 1920x1080 with Ultra Graphics Quality setup.
The gaming frames is 46 FPS, really smooth and around 20% faster than GTX780M.
Once we tune up the resolution to 2880x1620, the FPS drops a lot because the Ultra mode also set 4xMSAA (Anti-Aliasing), that will impact the performance a lot in higher resolution, also make graphics memory demand around 3GB~4GB, seems the 8GB GDDR5 with GTX880M is prepared for upcoming games with such as 3K or even higher resolutions!
We could see it’s about 24~28 FPS under 3K resolution with Ultra Graphics Quality, most time it will reduce over 40% FPS rate of the gaming performance.
Seems to set the Battlefield 4 with “High” graphics quality on 2880x1620 resolution is more suitable to play the game smoother in every theme.
It’s about 42 FPS, close to the 1920x1080 Ultra graphics quality. So if we want to play heavy loading games at 2880x1620 resolution, set to High graphics quality setup is a good option for 3K gaming!
After these 3D and gaming tests, let’s take a look on the temperature of the cooling system. The room temperature is 25 degree C, the temperature of fan out part is 71.2 degree C, it’s not a surprise because of GTX880M and Core i7 4800MQ, even it’s a bit lower than most gaming notebooks with this 2 combinations. The palm rest and keyboard side is 30.6 degree C, it’s really cool for users to hands on.
After the fabulous experience of great 3D performance, let’s take a look on the benefits of “Super RAID 2”, normal 2.5” HDD is about 80~100MB/s, single SSD is about 400~550MB/s, BUT, GT60 Dominator Pro boost over 1536MB/s and average is 1477MB/s, that’s 15x faster than single HDD, almost 3x faster than single SSD.
If we check on the AS SSD Benchmark tests, you could see more detail of the storage access performance is amazing, the Sequential read is 1116.76MB/s, write is 786.79MB/s. 4K-64Thrd read is 665.09MB/s, write is 461.18MB/s, it’s ultra fast!
The GT60 Dominator Pro 3K IPS edition comes with Killer Doubleshot LAN and WiFi, it provides faster response time of gaming experience, when you at different LAN/WiFi environment, Killer software will ask you to make an internet speed test, this will fine tune your LAN/WiFi for smoother and faster online experience.
MSI also got a new software tool called “Dragon Gaming Center”, this tool is also good for hardware monitor and utility launch tool. Also could show the status of Hybrid Power enable or disable.
The ultimate weapon for enthusiast gamers:
The GT60 2PE Dominator Pro 3K IPS version is extremely powerful, it comes with most of the features that a great gaming notebook could have, 3K IPS panel is really great effect of vision quality, SteelSeries keyboard with SSE is amazing for gamers to play their games smarter, Sound By Dybaudio present really good detail sound quality, Killer Doubleshot is faster for online gaming, of course the GTX880M is awesome for gamer to play Full HD even 3K resolution games, the backlit of Dragon logo and keyboard is really beautiful.
    Conclusion:
The overall score I will give this GT60 2PE Dominator Pro 3K IPS edition with Super Pack is 95 out of 100, this is really great machine for any hard core gaming or power user usage, I would recommend any one to must-have this notebook if it’s affordable for you!!

Ok either you work for MSI or you changed the settings in 3dmark11. I only scored around 5K with my GT60 2PE 3k. Any idea why I'm scoring 3k below you? Laptop was plugged in btw. Also how can you enter bios settings with this laptop? I suspect that maybe the hybrid gpu thing is affecting my score, and the Pc is probably not fully utilizing the GTX 880M, maybe in bios I can disable the integrated CPU's video card??? Please let me know. Thanks.

  • New video card from ATI

    Hello,
Its been a long time since I have been on the discussions board for the G4 powermacs. I have currently my G4 powermac powerPC Digital Audio 733mhz/1MB L3 cache. I have an AGP ATI 7000 radeon which is 64MB. I was wondering, because I was browsing through ATI and they have a 512MB video card option for Macs.
My question is can this card work in G4's? Not that I am into any hard core gaming, just wanting a low cost solution for seeing what core image looks like on my G4 through Tiger.
    Thanks,
    Nadav

    Hi-
    No.
The best that you can do is an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac (256mb).
Other options are a flashed PC version of the 9800 (128mb).

  • Upgrade power mac g5 or buy imac/mac pro

I have a single cpu 1.8ghz g5. If i upgrade to a 128meg video card will it play world of warcraft at a minumum of between 30-40frames per second? or should i save up for an intel pci-e imac or a mac pro? Mind you im coming to macs from a dual core gaming rig that runs wow between 90-120fps depending on server load. If the g5 can handle it, then ill grab a mac mini, if not then save up money to get either an imac or a mac pro Any help would be greatly appreciated

Why not look at hardware sites and see just what can be done today on a PC using P55 or X58 and Core i5/i7 and graphics cards coming out?
Always going to be limited in choice and pay an $100 'tax' for Mac compatible.
The Mac Pro makes running OS X and Windows easy though, and there is $1999 in Apple Store Specials for a 2008 single proc quad-core 2.8, nice and you can do quite well. Which is about what it cost to do a custom build for my 920.

  • Is the current 13" MacBook Air powerful enough to run 2D autocad in bootcamp smoothly? If so, how will it handle 3d rendering software such as Rhino.

My girlfriend has recently purchased the new 13" Macbook Air (3rd gen Intel processor). It is the base model (ie. 1.8GHz i5 processor, 4GB RAM, etc).
I have checked on the autodesk website for their Windows 64-bit autocad system requirements and they all seem to be met, even to the recommended levels. However we havent actually tried running it because we havent gotten a copy of Windows on the machine yet. Also, she has a rendering software called Rhino, which ran fairly smoothly on my pc (its about 2 years old but was top of the line then), but I feel we are not up to par on the system requirement "OpenGL graphic card recommended".
If anyone could offer some guidance as to weather we should keep the MacBook Air it would be appreciated. I think the alternative would be to buy a Windows laptop because of cost, which wouldn't be nearly as exciting.

It's not a hard core gaming rig, but it plays all the FPS games I like, quite well. It handles hi-def video, just fine. I use it for Photoshop, and it is quite fast. For web browsing, it has no equal. The 2010 maxed out 11" would do it all, except for some hi-def video (1080P), which it would stutter. But my new 2011 maxed 13", is perfect for video (1080P=no problem).
I really don't think a MBP will give you as much, on a daily basis. It (the MBP) has only a few advantages, and except for the built in optical drive (which you can still go external, if need be), none of the advantages you will miss even slightly.
I think the MBP would only serve me, if it spent most of the time deskbound, but I would still need an SSD. Once you have had an SSD, you can't go back. Then, you would have a really pricey MBP.

  • Sorry - very general question

I have been playing with flash for a while on a Mac but I
have been dissatisfied. It is a pre-intel version and 1) it is very
slow, 2) it does not support Soundforge, which I hear is quite
popular and easy to use. Anyway, I'd like to get a PC but I'm not
sure whether I need a standard computer or a suped up version with
lots of memory, graphics capability, etc. Basically the sites I've
seen have divided computers into those suitable for standard office
tasks and net surfing and those suited for "hard core gaming." I am
basically planning to use the computer just for flash animation and
sound clips. Is a standard PC (that exceeds Flash's minimum
requirements) going to do it for me? Sorry for the general
    question. Thanks.

First of all, no need for the apology, there are no stupid
    (or general) questions.
Second of all: sorry to all Mac fans, but PCs are the way to
go. After all, you get to choose what company makes your computer.
So you can get either the high-end model from HP or Gateway, or get
something a little more affordable from eMachines or Compaq. With
the Mac, you can only choose, well, a Mac.
While computer shopping, look for the following features:
(This is the BARE minimum of what your expectations should
    be)
    Windows XP Home Edition
    AMD Athlon+ 2.1 GHz Processor
    800x600x16-bit or better screen
32 MB Video RAM (For the occasional game here and there)
    512+ MB System RAM
    Sound Card, Speakers
If you get a computer with Windows Vista (which you probably
will), turn off the Vista visual styles, use Windows Standard.
(Flash has a BIG problem concerning Windows Vista visual styles,
which is the problem I'm having now...see first page of "Flash
General Discussions" for my post, please help! Thank you.)

  • Mac or PC for adobe work?

well my PC has just broke and i and i am  needing to get a new one but i want more info about if a PC is better(what i mean by better if performants is better) or a Mac for working with adobe programs?

    thanks for your help

Without knowing the exact product codes nobody can know exactly. Certain edu licenses may provide a selection of platform in teh package, but still require you to commit to one when you exchange the redemption code for the final serial. Similarly, certain edu volume licenses issued by schools may contain serials for both platforms, but this is realyl too complicated to figure out, even more so since quite literalyl edu licensing falls under different rules in each country or even states/ counties. The only way to be sure would be to get the aforementioned item code and inquire with your regional edu support/ reseller if this is legit and usable for you.

  • MSI Afterburner Hardware Monitor Graphs - Possible to display Averages

    Hi,
I am reviewing the graphs of the statistics on my hardware performance over my last gaming session, and I am dismayed to see that it just displays the Min & Max statistics. For example, my GPU % Utilization min is 0 and max is 100. Well duh, that is pretty useless information for me. What I would really like to see is the AVERAGE utilization over this last period. Yet, amazingly I see no way to do this. I assume I am just missing something, this has to be information people would want to see. Who cares about max and min, I want to know Avg. The max and min are for the most part going to be the max and min possible... for 0% when idle, and 100% when hard core gaming.  Same goes for my CPUs... I would love to know on average how much of my 8 cores are being used. But again, it shows the min and max... and again for hte most part min 0 max 100 or 90+. This stats are pretty useless to me, what seems like the usefull AVGs are not available and I find that moronic. I know I must be the noob who just doesnt know how to display this, yet for me, I would think they would be displayed right there between the min and max values.
Can someone help me out on how to set my graphs of hardware performance/utilization to show me the AVG values?
    Thanks!
    ~Kris

Afterburner seems doesn't have the average statistics...
You can feedback to MSI, hope they will add this function in the future....
For now, you could use GPU-Z to check the average...

  • Best RAM and HD Performance?

I need to upgrade my current generation MacBook to 4gb of RAM. I have an option of having heat sinks and I have two questions: One, will the RAM with heat sinks (or heat spreaders) fit into the slots on the laptop? Two, because of the small size of the RAM bay and over all thinness of the computer, would it make any difference even having heat sinks?
Also, I need some professional/informed advice about what HD to buy for the laptop. I have these options: 320GB/5400/8MB, 320GB/7200/16MB, or 400GB/5400/8MB. Then second option costs more then the other two, and the last costs 20 more then the first. What is the performance advantage of the second compared too the others?
I have been informed that data density, in addition to cache size and rpm, is a performance factor as well. All are 3.0Gb/s.
I do video/photo/sound/finishing/ editing, and, on a more personal note, I do some hard core gaming on the machine as well.

    lvguts wrote:
Awesome. I won't be spending extra for the heat sinks then.
I don't know of many people who use heat spreaders sinks except for people who build "show" computers and serious gamers or overclockers. If you want to, you could always add aftermarket heat spreaders if you've got an issue.
As far as the HD is concerned, you said that the cache would help with writes, do you know the increase in performance? As far as size is concerned, you seemed to intimate that the larger the drive the slower the unit would run. Is that correct? If so, the 400 would be knocked out. However, would the increase in RPM and cache size of the 2nd over the 1st overcome the slowness due to the large size (320GB)?
The buffer is just DRAM. It should be able to accept data as fast as it comes on the interface. Once it's maxed out, you're going to be limited by the speed that your drive media can take it. When you check specs, remember that's just the maximum transfer rate and you won't always be achieving that rate.
There's no doubt that a 7200 RPM should result in higher performance. It's probably only a matter of squeezing a little more performance unless you're doing something that's constantly accessing the drive for large amounts of data. It might help when you're starting up applications. If I were going to get another drive, it probably would be another 7200 RPM drive. If you think what you're doing is disk intensive, why not just run Activity Monitor and check on Disk Activity. You should get a good idea if what you're doing is taxing the drive.
I just said the boot time was a little longer. I'm not 100% why, although I vaguely recall someone saying it just takes a little bit longer for some sort of disk check at startup, if that makes any sense. It doesn't bother me since I usually put my machine to sleep instead of shutting down.

  • Deciding on what should I buy!

I'm a PC user and I'm planning on upgrading to a Mac system that I can run both Windows 8.1 and Mac. But before I decide I need to know a bit of compatibility. I have a 21 inch Dell touch screen that I would like continue using it if I can.  To determine my decision I have three questions to make my decision and here is where I would need help.
    1. Should I buy a Mac Mini or Mac Mini Server or should I buy a iMac instead of a Mac Mini?
    3. Will I be able to use the touch screen in the Mac OS?
    3. Will I have to replace my keyboard or Mouse with an Apple Mouse and keyboard to work with Windows and Mac?

FWIW, all the Mini Server gets you for the additional
money is a second internal HDD and and the Server app
preinstalled over the upper end non-server version.  Unless
you really want the second internal drive, I would not get it.
I personally use virtual machines using Parallels Desktop
    for WindowsXP, Windows7, and Windows8.1.  I
however don't need any touchscreen as all my Windows
applications are desktop based.  Using virtual machines
is pretty much running Windows in an application window
    on the Mac.
If you do any hard core gaming, or perhaps even midlevel
gaming, the Mini in any flavor may not be right for you since
it only has the Intel HD4000 integrated graphics.

  • GeForce GTX 680 Restock ETA?

Is there any word on when the GeForce GTX 680 graphic cards will be in stock again? Preferablely the Asus, EVGA, or Galaxy ones, as I don't understand why the PNY one is $60 more for the same card.

We are constantly working with the vendor communities to secure as many GTX 680’s as we can, regardless of which manufacturer it is from.  This is a highly constrained product in the entire channel, and as of right now there is not a firm ETA regarding timing.  We often receive orders in smaller allocations, so I would encourage you to continue checking.  Regarding pricing, our goal is to be as competitive as possible in this area to ensure that the core gaming customer is engaged and has a reason to shop at Best Buy.

    Hi,
HP G6 series laptops are budget laptops. There are only couple of boards compatible with the chassis and those do not have very poweful graphics chips for gaming. I suggest to buy a better laptop.
