8 Core Mac using very little of 16g Ram

I have noticed my 8 core MAC Pro with 16G of ram is using little ram. And Example is FCP and Motion open with 14.34G free. My last machine would have sucked the ram right up. I am sure someone can explain this situation.
I must say though, it is very fast and most noticed using compressor !
Thanks

BKENT,
This is a very simple explanation...
RAM is allocated automatically by your Mac Pro, so the amount of RAM will fluctuate depending upon each program's needs. If a program requires 2 GB of memory to run, your Mac Pro, or any Mac for that matter, will automatically assign the amount of RAM required, on-the-fly. In other words, Mac OS X programs don't have fixed RAM allotments. This is called dynamic memory allocation.
So the programs you are running, like Final Cut Pro and Motion, will launch using very little RAM, but as you open files with those programs more memory will be allocated as required.
This is good news because more RAM is available for other applications to be open at the same time, which is one of the strengths of Mac OS X.

What is the best family plan option. Currently have one smart phone with 30gb of data and 3 basic phones. Also have home phone for $20/month. Current plan is 700 shared minutes and unlimited texting. My bill is close to $200/month, looking to lower if possible.

Great Advice given earlier by SuzyQ   - I believe the question not asked of you is ---what do you want to pay for the services that you need.  I think that it would narrow the groups suggestions if you could narrow your needs.
For example: I need talk and text on 4 phones and some data say, 2 Gig, on only one of the phones. what plan is the best cost for me? You may also need to ask what the cost may be to switch to a different plan. I suspect that there will be no cost within Verizon-but ask anyway.
I do not think that you can have a smart phone on any Verizon plan unless you agree to buy data for that phone. Also, you said that wifi is often available-however, I do not believe that Verizon allows talking over wifi without consuming airtime minutes-only data over wifi avoids your allowance to be impacted.
As most here already know, several other service providers offer wifi-friendly service (talk/text/data) that will provide  home/business/restaurant service without impacting your allowance- just not here.
After getting some suggestions here, call 611 and confirm availibility and price.
Best of luck in your research.

On my MacPro with10.7.3. while running a Python script in terminal, after a while, in several hours actually,  I see a system message for the Terminal app: "There is no more application memory available on your startup disk". Both RAM and VM appear to be fine at this point, i.e. Python uses only 10G of 16G RAM and  VM =238G with ~1TB free. Log reads: " macx-swapon FAILED - 12" multiple times. Furthermore, other terminal windows can be opened and commands run there. It only happens with larger inputs (text files), but with inputs that are about half the size everything runs smoothly.  So the issue must be the memory indeed, but where to look for the problem/fix?

    Have you tried with the --diag flag for diagnostics? Or changing verbose to 3 to show debug messages? Clearly one of three things is happening;
    1. You ARE running out of disk space, but once it errors out the space is reclaimed if the output file is deleted on error. When it fails, does your output have the content generated up to the point of termination?
    2. The application (Terminal) is allocated memory that you are exceeding
    3. The task within Terminal is allocated memory that you are exceeding
I don't know anything about what this does but is there a way to maybe run a smaller test run of it? Something that takes 10 minutes? Just to see if it works.

  • Which memory modules to use for upgrade 8 core Mac Pro

I am planning to upgrade the memory in my new 8 core Mac Pro, I use it for graphics and video editing (FCS2), I am wondering what would be the advantages and differences between getting the 8GB upgrade in 2-pair of 4GB module or 4-pair of 2GB module, I know the price for the first choice is almost double the second.

OK, so according to the http://www.barefeats.com/harper3.html Memory Tests, all slots filled means the fastest speed. So here's my question:
I'm about to buy a 2,8GHz MacPro with 2GB RAM, and I want to upgrade to 8GB. I was considering buy an 8GB Kit from Crucial (629.99$), and either leave the original 2GB and add the 8GB to the free slots, or just take the original out and leave only the 8GB modules. And this would be my question before reading the Memory Tests article.
So I went back to Crucial's online store and did some math, to see how much it would cost me to fill the remainder slots (6, counting off the 2 used by the original RAM) with 1GB modules, instead of my previous idea of 8GB (2x4GB). So, a 2GB Kit (2x1GB) cost 127.99$, multiplied by 3, which is what I would need to achieve a total of 6GB, to add to the original 2GB, will cost 383.97$.
That's 246$ less than the 8GB Kit! And according to the Memory Tests, even faster.
Isn't this too good to be true? What's your word?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Speedgrade CC 2014.2 build 8.2x51 unsmooth/choppy 4K playback with GPU R9 295x2 - it uses only 2 GB of RAM (Windows 8.1 64Bit), Mac OS - same problem

    Hello, guys
    I have following configuration:
    i7-5960x @ 4.3 GHz
    32 GB DDR4 RAM
ATI 295x2 8GB (Gpusniffer.exe shows 3072 MB on each Hawaii unit)
    M.2 Ultra Samsung XP941 (>1000Mb/sec)
Few 850 Pro SSD for H.264 4k source
Latest Speedgrade CC build at 16/02/2015 (DUAL MONITOR SETUP - 2560x1440 for Interface and 4096x2160 for Preview)
I work with a lot of short 10-15 seconds 4K 4096x2160 24FPS H.264 clips from Panasonic GH4. Import them to Premiere CC as is, some warp stabilization, cut them, save project and open in Speedgrade CC. Everything is fantastic smooth in Premiere CC.
In Speedgrade - some simple color correction - Exposition, some keyframes and the most simple grading for some material. I use GPU acceleration for sure to have full 4096x2160 4K 24FPS. But it is not responsive and smooth after some correction is applied. Everything is choppy and freezes first seconds, when I press "PLAY". I used Resources monitor, Task manager (Winodws 8.1 64-bit) and Afterburner. And there is what I found out:
Afterburner shows utilization of single GPU (as we know for playback only 1 GPU used) the same amount like in Premiere. Speedgrade CC uses 2,5GB VRAM. By the way, if I use some none-gpu-accelerated effect, like "transform", for example, imported from Premiere, I will get "Not enough GPU resources" message in Speedgrade. Afterburner shows, that Speedgrade CC tried to utilize more, then max. available VRAM 3GB during this moment. So I switch off such effects, before open project in Speedgrade.
Processor is also low on utilization (15%), maybe even a little lower, then in Premiere CC
Disk - 3-10%, H.264 is low on it
RAM !!! - is the problem. I allowed to use 29 GB of RAM to Adobe apps. Speedgrade CC uses not more, then 2-3 GB according to Taskmanager (mostly 2GB) and Resources Monitor of Windows 8.1 64Bit Pro. After I finished with color correction, opened project in Premiere CC, everything works smooth with lumteri on and! Premiere CC uses 9-10 GB of RAM to play the same clip at full resolution smoothly!!!
I already reinstalled everything, including drivers for GPU, Windows 8.1 and Adobe CC. Same result.
    Macbook Pro Retina 15 late 2013 with i7-4960HQ/16gb RAM/Geforce 750m UPDATE!
Under Mac Os Yosemite 10.10.2 - same situation here. Premiere CC uses 5GB (of 11GB available) for 4096x2160 Prores 422 HQ and is usable, smooth with some frame drops.
Speedgrade CC uses 2,5 GB of RAM for 4096x2160 and it is impossible to use full 4096x2160. Only 1/2 Resolution for preview is smooth and usable at notebook display. At external 4096x2160 monitor connected through Thunderbolt it is much more choppy, I think it is hard for 750m with 2 GB of VRAM.
UPDATE! Previous version (CC 2014) of Premiere CC and Speedgrade CC under Windows 8.1 64-bit - same situation.
    What do you think?
My opinion - Speedgrade CC is not optimized for 4K resolutions. Premiere CC is good for 4K.
btw, for information, latest AMD catalyst omega driver 14.12 has a problem with my R9 295x2 and Mercury Playback Engine (MPE) OpenCL - just the black screen with sound, when I turn on GPU acceleration. So I use previous 14.9 version. With 14.12 GPUsniffer.exe found one GPU device with 4Gb of VRAM and one GPU with 3GB of VRAM (normally must be 3GB+3GB for 295x2 Dual GPU-chip radeon).

So, I got MSI 290x 8GB tested and... found out that I can't use 8GB of VRAM, because there are some AMD driver limitations!!!
    1. I switched off my 295x2 8Gb (4GB+4GB) to be sure, it will not affect VRAM amount.
    2. I launched Gpusniffer utility with 14.9 AMD driver and 3072 Mb VRAM was available ONLY! It worked like 295x2 with 3072 + 3072 Mb VRAM.
    3. I installed 14.12 AMD Omega driver and GPUsniffer informed that I have now 8192 Mb!!! But! Mercury Playback Engine did not work with Premiere Pro CC or Speedgrade CC as with my 295x2. Just black screen.
RGB and Luma at 0 and preview is black with 14.12 AMD driver. Premiere PRO - the same situation.
With 14.9 AMD Driver. Left 2560*1440 Dell working area monitor and 4096*2160 preview LG monitor right side.
With 14.9 Gpusniffer shows 3 and 3 and 3GB Vram instead of 4GB and 4GB and 8Gb. As I understood with CrossfireX switched off - Adobe products and their GPUsniffer utility could "find" and use 8GB on primary GPU, but again we can see AMD driver issues.
Single 290x 8GB with 14.9 AMD driver also displays only 3072 Mb available in Gpusniffer.
NEATVIDEO informed on their website in Bugs section about 14.12 driver problem with MPE. They also wrote about problem to AMD, so I did. I think, this is really bad story. So, AMD, we are awaiting for normal drivers.

  • 12-Core Mac Pro w/ 32GB of RAM and FCPX is S..L...O...W....

This is annoying.  I'm trying to cut a feature film on this.  On a two week old Mac Pro.  12-Core Mac w/ 32GB of RAM.  It's becoming a liability and I'm starting to think I made the wrong choice going with Apple and Final Cut Pro X BOTH.  The amount of time this software is adding to MY life timeline is ridiculous.  I'm only running FCPX.  No other programs.  And anyhow, I should have enough RAM to run more than that w/o these problems.
A feature film means I have 400GBs of clips in the Event.  This is a real life situation and a editing program needs to be able to handle that.  All the media ia on a different internal 7200RPM drive that isn't running the OS.
Renaming a clip in the Event Library is slow.  Adding scene and other information to a clip is slow.  Processing after importing a clip from tape is slow.
I just imported 10 clips ranging from 30 secs to 3 minutes in length.  They are SD from a DVX100 tape.  Not even talking HD here.  It's supposed to be analyzing in the background but the rainbow ball spinning constantly and allowing me only enough time to click something once before it spins again isn't "processing in the back grond" in my opinion.
I bought the best so that I wouldn't have to deal with garbage like this.
I haven't even started editing yet.  I understand this is first gen of a new revamp so it's going to be buggy and crash on occassion.  I know what I signed up for.  but these are basic tasks.  I can't even imagine how performance would be with hi res stuff.
So my question is: What the heck is the deal here?  Does Apple check up on these discussions?  When will I get a professional level program that actually utilizes the tools I have running under the hood?

Just to update everyone reading this thread.  I have begun to cut a teaser trailer for the film (ThereAreNoGoodbyes.com if you're interested!) to premiere at a film festival next week and the editing process has gone smoothly.  Editing itself appears to be fine thus far.  Although im dealing with a very short project runtime at this point (90 seconds).
At this point it appears the major issues are with importing, transcoding, and analyzing.  all headaches and much more time consuming than i have had experience with in the past (on other NLEs).  my assumption is maybe it's the "analyzing" thats the main problem here.  for my personal curiousity i wanted to see what FCPX came back with in the a/v diagnosis, but if i turned all of those things off on import (just guessing here) perhaps the process would have been much faster.
whatever the case may be it should NOT be advertised as something that can be done in the background until that's an actual fact.
after this trailer is finished (this week) i will start working on the assembly cut of the film which will clock at anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours and then ill get a better idea if FCPX can handle what id consider to be a normal-sized project.  I'll post back here with my impressions...
side note: i had to do some basic effects in Motion on some footage and that was smooth and painless working within Motion and coming back to FCPX with the footage.

  • PP-CC is hanging when I attempt to import/OSX10.9, 8 core, 16G RAM

First, I've been running system 10.9 for 2 months.  I did that upgrade and then went to Adobe CC for the latest version of Premiere which I love.  Today, APP-CC starts without issue but when I go to import clips, the browse screen dissappears and it hangs.  I've started and re-stared the machine, I downloaded a "bug fix" from CC for PP-CC, I even gave up and reinstalled CS6 PP so I could just work but now that won't even work.  There is also no software update available for my Mac at this time.  I'm running a MacPro 8 core machine with 16G RAM, plenty of hard drive space, and I keep scratching my head.  Why would all this work without issue for two months and then just stop working????  At the hang instant, all of the options across the top of the toolbar turn grey except for the "start dictation..." option, and you have to force quit to do anything after that.  I've restarted maybe 9-10 times, before and after the download of the "bug fix."  I want to make sure you understand, I had the problem prior to the "big fix."
5:00pm EST- now I have discovered that Photoshop is also hanging...    now I'm wondering if I have a hardware issue or if it might be an issue with CC?

This statement usually accompanies changes to other things on the system and not necessarily any changes to the program in question.  The best advice I have for you to get help is to answer *all* of the questions in the FAQ link below as completely as you can.  You've already provided some answers, but hopefully a clue will emerge when you add the rest of the information:

  • Dual Core Mac only using 30% processor power.

    Hi,
I'm running Motion on a Dual-core 2.3GHz G5 Power Mac. My Motion renders are really slow - and bring the whole system to a crawl.
Using Activity Monitor and Menu Meters, I can see that Motion is only using, at most, 50% processor power between the two cores.
The machine has 4GB of RAM so that shouldn't be an issue, and I've run the same Motion files on my old 2.0 Dual G5 at home and the renders use 95% of each processor and are much faster.
Is Motion not dual core aware?
    Thanks,
    Joe

CPU processing in Motion is not the workhorse. GPU does all the heavy lifting. What graphics card are you using?

  • 8 Core Mac Pro only using 40% of its power? ouch.

    Hi there
I have purchased a top of the line 8 Core Mac Pro with 10GB RAM to do video conversion tasks, among other things.
Right now, i'm importing a m4v file into iMovie, and i've opened up Activity Monitor, and it stays around the 40% mark. The import says it will take approximately 9 minutes.
The same conversion was then tested on an iMac and took only a tiny bit longer with the % bars up much higher.
    What gives?
Is there a way I can make all the processors FOCUS on a specific task to complete it much faster (without setting up xGrid since most apps aren't xgrid compatible)
One thing I have tried, I purchased a copy of VisualHub and duplicated the application about 5 times, and gave it 5 different tasks. It used up 100% sure enough, but what if I have just one biiig task?
Otherwise I could have saved myself the extra $6000 and bought an imac...

There's a saying: Nine women can't make a baby in one month. If a task is not practical to be broken up, it can't be broken up. Or at least until programmers rearrange pipelines so that it can. Snow Leopard is no guarantee of anything. It will take Apple to provide good Snow Leopard frameworks for multitasking in the OS, and it will take application programmers to compartmentalize pipelines so that all processes that can be broken up, are. It will take both parties. Either alone won't do it. And some processes might still not be able to be broken up (like making a baby).
Even at that point, to expand on what Scott said, you have to prove that the CPU is the bottleneck. That is isn't because the disks can't feed data fast enough, or write the computed data back fast enough, or that it isn't because the speed of the bus to RAM can't keep up, etc. There is a huge myth that CPU is the only measure of performance, but performance has multiple dependencies like CPU speed, RAM/bus speed, and disk speed. If a program cares about the CPU most, like 3D or math apps, then adding more CPUs scales performance effectively. If a program needs to read/write data from/to disk constantly, or depends on other components for performance, the CPU may spend a lot of time waiting for those other components.
Is there a way I can make all the processors FOCUS on a specific task to complete it much faster (without setting up xGrid since most apps aren't xgrid compatible)
Only if the process can be broken down and the processing pipelines support it. Otherwise, you just have CPUs "focusing on" waiting for the other system components to deliver stuff it can work on.
There are some apps that can exploit 8 cores, After Effects is one that can do it for video. I do not use that often but my (possibly out of date) understanding is that it can take individual independent lossless frames and send them to different cores or machines for processing, but that is far different than what you would do with Visual Hub or iMovie which is doing a lot of decompressing/compressing using lossy codecs that look across many frames in time. That fact may prevent some degree of breaking up the task, if the codec needs to see forward and back in the same file to process a single frame instead of being able to hand off individual frames to other CPUs.
Don't take the details of last paragraph as gospel, I'm just trying to convey the idea.

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.

    • Only if your video camera supports it.  Depending on how your camera works, you may need to add preview software to your Mac to use this feature.
    • Alternatively, your camera may also be able to record directly into your Mac while you are monitoring the Mac's display.
    • If you are using a consumer camcorder that supports HDMI monitoring, a small HDTV might be an simpler solution than your Mac.  For an example of how this is done, see http://youtu.be/GVpSkZD6qE4.
    • The retailer who sold you your video camera may have other suggestions.
    • If you need more professional results, an external preview monitor will offer more capability on compatible cameras.

Hi folks, long time reader, first time poster (sorry, couldn't resist):
I just got a nice shiny new core solo mac mini 1.5 with stock ram and it feels like it runs slower than my 450 mhz dual processor powermac. Activity monitor shows that if I try to run microsoft word and entourage at the same time I run out of free ram - is this normal? I'm thinking of upgrading the ram, but don't want to void the warranty if it turns out to be a hardware problem. Any ways that I could check it out?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Yes.
Running Microsoft PPC binaries under Rosetta will take more memory. And the stock 512 meg is sufficient, but as with any modern Operating System, more memory means better performance.
I went to Best Buy recently and picked up these 2 sticks of RAM giving me 2 gigs of RAM in my Mac Mini Intel Core Duo:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7644196&type=product&id=1134699426 321
I replaced the preinstalled RAM in about 10 minutes. Undo the case (worst part actually), remove 4 screws, disconnect one onboard cable, replace RAM, reverse process.
It made a huge difference in just about everything, as was expected. It also seems to have cured my video bleeding problems too.
