8 core MACPRO

hallo, i was just wondering how the 8 core mac was holding up...i may have the chance to sell my Macpro 2,6 and was considering getting a new 8 core macpro...i am an editor and motion graphic designer, using Avid, FCS 2, Adobe Creative suite, After Effects, and cinema 4D. I work in HD and SD. I have heard from one owner of a editing studio that the 8 Core Macs were having a few issues, like heating up, but i do not know if i should believe him or if he was just down playing the importance of the newer machines compared to his G5 quad based studio...I would appreciate and advice or feedback on Macpro 8 core experiences...
thanks,
aaron

i haven't overloaded my processors yet.
i've gotten the load to 88% before but no higher.
i was:
running two versions of g-force (itunes and standalone) each took 93% of a core and ran like buttah.
encoding a divx file to dvd video (102%)
running warcraft III and starcraft in windowed mode.
running an 8 track garageband song with about 2 effects running on each.
plus a couple of other random tasks... i think safari and something else was open...
everything was fine once the memory had balanced out (i only got it with a gig cause i know where to find it).
and this was before leopard.
i've been through quake 4, doom 3, prey (which looks reaaaally good), command & conquer 3 (which seems to run better with leopard), and played a bunch of halo online. on the mac side.
on the dark side i've been jammin a bunch of bioshock. and it runs and looks amazing. and for some reason doom 3 ran waaaay better. i think id just doesn't know the language yet...
oh and the firmware update fixes the fan problem anyway. i've run mine for days at a time with no problems. that unix core, baby!

  • 12 Core MacPro freezing, can't re-install Snow Leopard to SSD

    Hello,
My MacPro started freezing right after Christmas this year, seemingly as I set-up my new iPad2 (although I think this is a coincidence).
Seems to happen after the computer wakes from sleep. Mouse works right up to the time I shut down via the power button but becomes increasingly useless. First it works, then it allows me to access menus & raise the dock but not activate anything, then the dock freezes & nothing responds (but the mouse is still mobile). Key commands don't work at this point either. I've also noticed that when this happens (upon awakening), some of the icons on the right side of my menu bar are missing: Time Machine, Spaces, Airport & Energy Saver.
I've spent days trying to fix this on my own. Here's what I've tried so far:
Run Disk Utility, Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, reset PRAM & NVRAM, corrected permissions (including those of my home folder via terminal) & tried to reinstall Snow Leopard.
As to reinstalling the OS, I started with my original gray factory SL disk. Inserted, selected printers, languages, font prefs & started. After about 15 minutes got blue screen, DVD drive stopped chewing. I let it go & in another ten minutes the original screen appeared asking me if I'd like to install the OS. This time, my boot disk wasn't shown.
Restarted from disk this time, ran Disk Utilities but drive wasn't showing there either. Quit, restarted normally & all was there.
Tried reinstalling again, got to gray screen with apple logo but it stopped there. Let it go overnight but it was still there in the morning. No messages.
Thinking the disk might be bad, I started from the retail Snow Leopard install disk I bought for my MacBook Pro... same result.
Reran all tests. Including extended Apple Hardware Tests: no problems.
    What I've got:
    12 core MacPro 2 x 2.66ghz (Sept. 2010)
    16 gb 1333mhz DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card
Set up (per recommendations on LLoyd Chambers Diglloyd MPG site):
Boot disk/applications (in second optical bay): 120 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD
         GUID partition, Journaled HFS+
2 TB Western Digital Black Caviar for TimeMachine: internal
    2) 2TB WD black Caviars & OEM 1 TB RAID 0 Striped to create:
3.48 TB data drive (my home folder)
    768 GB scratch disk.
This has been my set-up since day one & has worked fine.  In early December 2011 one of the WD HDD's died.  Warranty replacement, rebuilt the RAID, recopied my data, re-associated my home folder & all worked fine for about a month (did a lot of research during rebuilding) before current glitch. No problems with freezing prior to late December.  However, up until that time I believe my energy saver prefs were set to Never allow the HD to sleep (I do some overnight rendering). I did recently change that to sleep after 3 hours.
I'm hoping a clean install of the OS, then the 10.6.8 combo updater & finally a fresh install of all of my apps might cure things.  Even now, my machine runs very quickly (now even quicker than before the hard drive replacement).  I want to solve this before these hard resets start writing bad blocks to my drives.  Also hoping that a clean install of the OS will be able to link back to my current TimeMachine back-up.
Sorry for the length of this post but I wanted to state what I have unt what I've done in the hope of finding a solution.
I've searched here & online for answers without much luck so this is my last ditch effort before disconnecting & lugging my 70lb. machine to the Apple Store.
    Thanks for any help.

I think I might have this mess sorted out, here's how I got to where I am.
Early this week, in an effort to eliminate another variable, I took my machine apart & blew it out with my compressor.  I removed all the drives, including the SuperDrive, the RAM & graphics card & blew them out separately then cleaned their contacts with a bit of contact cleaner on a cotton swab & reseated everything making sure that there were secure connections.  After reassembly I reconnected the machine, restarted & all seemed well for a few days to the point that I was confident enough to change my Energy Saver settings back to putting the disk to sleep after an hour.  That night I let it fall asleep on its own & when I awakened it the next morning, it froze again.
I called Other World Computing & asked for their help.  After explaining the situation the tech suggested a few things which I'd already done & suggested that I continue trying to reinstall the OS.  He did say that they were aware of a "wake from sleep" issue with my model SSD but that the problem was usually associated with laptops.  Like in my case, it only seems to happen when the drive falls asleep on its own, not if you put it to sleep manually.  He said that if the problem continued after a clean reinstall I'd need to return the drive to have it reflashed (whatever that means).
I started up from my original OS DVD, opened Disk Utility but the SSD wasn't shown in the window (as happened before).  I called back to OWC & they issued me an RMA offering to replace the drive.  I've got some work that needs to be finished this weekend then I'll box it up, send it off & report back next week when I try it all again with the new drive.
Thanks again for continued help.  It's good to have someone to bounce thoughts off of!
P.S.  A small piece of advice to anyone reading this that might be dealing with similar problems, the tech mentioned that you shouldn't use any disk utility to repair bad blocks on an SSD since they don't use blocks. He said it can sometimes compound the problem as those programs will try to move things to compensate.

  • Having intermittent Airport connectivity with a 2010 6 core MacPro.  Any help?

Having intermittent Airport connectivity with a 2010 6 core MacPro. When it works has low bars on status graph.  Laptop set up next to it has no connect problems. Airport utility has shown no Airports a couple times when the laptop showed all. When first joined network, staus bar is full, then drops to one or two bars. Would this be an antenna or card being loose? Is it user friendly fix, or bring it to Apple? Thanks in advance.

Would this be an antenna or card being loose?
    Sounds like it.
Is it user friendly fix, or bring it to Apple?
If under AppleCare, bring it to Apple. If not, you can probably find instructions to fix a loose antenna connector yourself.

  • Move my main harddrive from PowermacG5 to 8-core MacPro?

    Hi,
I just bought an 8-core MacPro and gave up my PowermacG5. I still have my main harddrive with all programs installed, my data, etc...
This is only my second Mac so I never had to migrate data between machines before but here's my question:
Can I just pop in my old drive into my new Mac (instead of the main drive) or do I need to go through some migration assistant, considering it would now be working from an Intel processor?
Or should I just put it in as a secondary drive and copy the files over?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can use it as a secondary drive and migrate data off it. I did exactly this, about 2 weeks ago, when I migrated from my Quad G5 to my 8-core Mac Pro.
You cannot boot off your current G5 drive -- it has the PPC version of Mac OS X and your Mac Pro needs the Intel version. With Leopard this won't be an issue (It's a Universal OS), modulo GPT partitioning stuff (not an issue as you'll have migrated to Intel way before that
As far as migrating, I suggest using the Migration Assistant only to migrate user home folders, and manually migrating system settings and Applications. there have been rumors here of issues using MA to migrate the Apps and System Settings from PPC systems to Intel systems.

  • Brandnew 8-core MacPro and ATI Radeon X1900 xt

I had this quadcore MacPro with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT and now I am switching to a newer octo-core MacPro.
I managed to install the card into the computer case. But alas, i don't see anything on my screen...
System Profiler discovers the card but gives it an generic name "Display" with Vendor ATI and DeviceID 0x7249.
But no "displays" found attached to it, which is b.s.
Please please don't tell me i cannot use this graphics card in the octo-core MacPro?!

I am surprised .... I don't have (any ideas), so I don't know for sure
You know, that doesn't help or further things and puts out false ideas that there even might. Then I'll hear "but I read somewhere something."
Apple changed the firmware on 2008. That is well known and pretty obvious, and graphic cards have to follow suit.
Nvidia doesn't seem to know or follow ATI's path of using a "hybred" (for want of better term) EFD? ROM that works across EFI32 and EFI64. Been explained over and over, or if not explained, given as cause to why.
At least we have a few years before EFI128!
    NVidia GeForce 7400 gfx card
    Now that is very elusive.
The 7300GT works only in 2006-7 Mac Pro, which were dual processor / dual or quad-core, but all used EFI32; 667MHz FBDIMM; had 1333MHz front side bus; PCIe 1.0/1.1 (but not PCIe 2.0 that came out in 2008).
And with brand new 2009, DDR3, you graphic option is really between GTX 285 and ATI HD 4870 - forget the GT120 even as a viable option for most.

  • Perl on quad core MacPro - 32 bit or 64 bit?

I am trying to run a perl script on a very giant file. I know I am insane to do so, but the code was given to me and it is easier than re-writing it. This is a scientific research project.
The problem is that I run out of memory. I think it is happening because perl is a 32-bit application, because I have 6 GB of RAM on the a new quad-core MacPro, and I have been seeing plenty of free memory as this thing runs over several days.
How can I tell if perl is a 32-bit app? If it is, does anyone know if there is a 64-bit version or if I can compile one? I have only seen instructions for 64-bit PPC versions, but I am willing to try those on my Intel machine if I can verify that it will work out to 64-bit.
For what it is worth, I have already run file on some of the perl libraries, and here is what I found:
    macpro> file /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib
    /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
/System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386
/System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc
So it is i386, which I assume is 32-bit?
    Thanks,
    Clay
Too many to list Mac OS X (10.4.9)
Too many to list   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The file is being read line by line and entered into a hash, and old entries purged after a while. However, due to the nature of the script, many things remain in the hash, causing lots of memory usage growth.
The errors I received were malloc failing somewhere in the perl library. I was monitoring the memory usage, and at some point hit a bug in the Activity Monitor was it was showing that I was using 16,000,000 TB (yes, terabytes) of real memory. I kept a screenshot of this to show off my cool super-mac to my friends.
I solved this my backing up the Mac OS and installing 64-bit Ubuntu linux on the machine. Not at all optimal, but the best I could see to do until 10.5 comes out. Hopefully, this will be done running by then. Last time, it took 11 days for one trace, and I have 6!
    Thanks for the answers.

  • Shake 4.1 crashes ONLY on my new 12-Core MacPro G5 , w/ Smoothcam

Shake continues to be one of my most-used applications. Today I migrated all my applications to the new 12-Core MacPro G5 (great machine!!!)
But there is a huge problem with Shake, ONLY when I apply the Smoothcam filter. It crashes immediately. I re-installed Shake, the latest 4.1.1 version....no luck. It's very strange. I have no issues with Shake on my Macbook Pro, nor did I have any issues with my old Power PC G5, ever! I have the full version of Final Cut Studio 3 installed on both my machines.. I thought there may be a conflict with the FCP Smothcam filter...but why does Shake not crash on my Macbook then?
Very strange! Anyone have a thought?

Congrats! should rock & roll and fly.
First and foremost, you should not migrate applications.
Sorry about that, there should be a big RED "Before you open" letter
Intel Mac Pro is not PowerPc and there are differences such that migrating has never worked, so clean install applications (if they aren't just drag and drop).
Mac Pro is never called G5.
I suspect things will break, drivers will need updates, happens every time.
When the 1st Mac Pro came out, all the storage drivers broke when there was more than 2GB RAM (so much for help following guidelines to writing drivers that they followed).
Some things are due to new EFI firmware, others could be from the later interim build you have that is newer, and likely will see some things resolved with one or two updates to Mac OS.
One example, a person tried 4 different well supported SATA controllers, none work, and after a lot of hair pulling, found that his system had newer firmware; had access to other Mac Pro Early 2009s where they worked fine which only made it more confusing!
A Mac Pro that has had apps migrated from G5's will often "run as slow as my old G5 Quad" and like molasses. Even though such problem doesn't show up on MBP and others it will on Mac Pro.
Hopefully FC Studio (3.5 in the works to use more cores?) and Shake forums and users and once vendors get their hands, and their developers, on more Mid-2010's.

  • 3.0ghz model speed vs. 3.0 ghz dual-core MacPro?

Anyone have a "speed-feel report" on the 3.06gh iMac vs. a 2007 MacPro Xeon 3ghz tower?
I'm not looking for benchmark numbers, I'm interested in how "snappy" the new 24-incher with maxed out 4gb RAM feels compared to a 4gb MacPro.
I normally always buy the fastest tower I can get -- even though I basically do web/email/iTunes/wp and some light Photoshop. Maybe I'm getting cheap in my old age, but the new towers spec out at a grand more -- and I question whether it's worth it.
I don't really seem to need the second chip. I wouldn't really miss the extra HD bays or supercharged dual-monitor video card either. My wife's Fall 07 aluminum iMac has a really nice, compact footprint, and I hear the new 24-incher has an even higher-quality LCD than the base model.
Before anyone asks, the glossy screen doesn't bother me -- I've been won over since I traded my older MBP for a MacBook Air a few weeks ago. I'm currently running a 30-inch Cinema Display, but the 24-inch iMac display seems more than adequate for my real-world needs. I am considering passing the 30-inch down to my son, who'll be a film/communications student when he goes off to college this fall. (I may pass the tower to him as well, but am leaning towards putting him into a brand new Mac Pro, since he'll be able to really use the extra horsepower.)
I guess what I'm really asking is...will I be trading way down if I go from the supercar to a nice luxury coupe?
Can anybody help an old **** out here?

I would very much like to know the answer to this question as well. I'm also using a (September 2006) 3.0GHz Mac Pro with a 30" ACD. I'm considering the 3.06 iMac as an opportunity to return to the all in one form factor, and I love the display (also after having used the MacBook Air).
I have been led to believe that any difference in performance would be noticeable only in heavy duty scientific or graphics apps, serious video rendering, etc. I do some AVCHD work in iMovie 08, and along with Photoshop that's about as heavy as it gets for me. I doubt there would be a noticeable difference in performance if I go to the new iMac, and I wouldn't be surprised if some apps were actually a bit "snappier" due to the new RAM.
I don't know which apps actually use 4 cores, but based on my Activity Monitor I have never used more than 4GB RAM. I'm thinking it may be safe to jump back into the iMac, but I'd love to hear from someone with more technical knowledge.

  • Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 (Configuration Error on Dual Core MacPro)

I just installed my old Final Cut Pro Hd version 4.5 on my new Dual Core Intel Xeon MacPro, and it says exactly this:
    Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing.
•Power Macintosh G4/350 megahertz (MHz), or faster
    •AGP graphics card.
Im sure what I have in my computer is something way more better than what it suggests me having. FCP 4.5 was out like 2 years ago. I looked on the support site and couldn't find anything, is there any updates that make it compatible with my computer?
    Thanks in advance.

Ah, but now you have a mac that uses a different chip...older versions of FCP will not work on the new configuration. You need to upgrade to FCP 5.1.

  • Need alternative to isight for 8-core MacPro running 10.5.2...?

My external isight will not work for more than a couple minutes in iChat before the picture distorts and audio coming from my end is delayed by five seconds. It works fine as can be with my old G4 1.25 running 10.4.8, I was hoping the 10.5.2 update would fix this issue.
Is there a confirmed working alternative (camera) that is compatible with a MacPro 8-core & Leopard 10.5.2...?

    Hello 2bigfeet
If you do not get a more specific answer you want here, consider the following.
    (1) If your iSight works properly (and reliably) with other Macs, you may have found a problem with your MacPro rather than your iSight. If so, a new webcam may not fix your problem.
You can try any relevant suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional to see if you can track down and fix your problem or determine that your MacPro needs professional service.
To assure you meet the considerable speed called for in iChat 4 System Requirements, be sure disconnect or turn off all other devices on your LAN while you test your broadband speed and troubleshoot.
Especially if you are using other Firewire devices or third-party AV software with your external iSight, pay particular attention to possible conflicts mentioned in the testing info. Even if you can get your iSight working properly with your MacPro, you may wish to use a USB cam for iChat if you must have Firewire devices that conflict with your iSight connected while you connect for video chats.
    (2) Other cam info at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5725045&#5725045
The comments about UVC cams apply equally to your Leopard Mac without adding any software. Complete support for UVC cams is included in the Mac OS itself after 10.4.8.
    (3) This recent thread gives some specific examples that are working for other Leopard users running iChat 4: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1201902&tstart=150
Any of the cams there will work with a 10.5.2 MacPro that is working properly.

  • First gen quad-core MacPro i7 upgrade

Greetings. I have my first gen 2.66 Quad Core for almost two years now and interested to give it a makeover. With the i7 have huge possibility to incorporate onboard t the macPro in MacWorld debute, I am actually thinking about swapping out my two 2.66 due-core and replace them with two 2.66 i7 (currently list price on newegg for about $300 a pop).
And here is my question, from you guys experience with G4 and macPro CPU upgrade, will a general retail CPU compatible with apple EFI?
And after I swap out those old due core, can I build a PC out of it?
Meanwhile, I just have to wait and try really hard not to get a 8800GT for Christmas, since that will more than likely to be refresh to 4870 as well...
    Thanks guys!

You aren't going to outgrow just because something new is around the corner. Wait for it and OS X to mature and catch up to each other and better use what you have like Snow Leopard.
If you had a 4 yr old system, and outgrew it, yes. If you want a 2nd system, I'd still say wait a year.
There are literally new articles and discussions of Core i7 every day as enthusiasts play around, companies try to improve their BIOS code. It is still very very new.
As mentioned earlier in thread, you have to use the same pin-compatible chips. And even if you could, it uses DDR3, the cost, and you'd have to what, sell your top of the line.
It is better to just buy a new system and then sell or keep as backup. And I would not jump on new platform until it has been out for months and a couple OS X updates under the belt as well.
So far I haven't seen any dual cpu motherboards for Nehalem (name Core I7 use to go by) in production.

  • Original 23" cinema display and new 23"display with new 8 core MacPro

I am posting this experience to help others with similar questions.
I just upgraded my tower from a dual 2.7 G5 to a new 8 core Mac Pro. I am using 2 23" cinema displays. One is an original first generation display (ADC connector) and the second is a newer 23" aluminum cased display.
The original CD needs to use the ACD to DVI converter and has to be plugged into the DVI port on the Radeon 4870 card. Using the mini-display to DVI convertor will not work. The newer display will work in either port. Both displays now work as they did before...no issues.
I hope this clarifies the situation for others with older displays

Aaah, thanks again Apple! So that's why they modded the videocard, to sell more new displays.
We got a set of fresh mac pro's yesterday, all fitted with the ATI Radeon 4870. I've just fitted it to our (< 1 year old) DELL 2408WFP displays. Unfortunately only the one with the regular DVI connector works. The one connected to the miniDVI does not recognize the monitor at all. (using the ACD to DVI) Not in windows, not in osx. I've tried the updated ATI drivers within windows, this does not do the trick. So thanks Apple, for almost delivering a good piece of hardware and not telling anyone about this problem.
If there's any news other then "buy new displays" i'll post it here.

  • Is Compressor compatible with the 8-core MacPros+ ATI 4870

    Hi everyone,
Compressor crashes as soon as it launches, every single time I've tried to open it on my 8-core 2.6GHz Nehalem- ATI Radeon 4870 - 8 Gb RAM system.
It seems to be the only component from FCS2 that is not functioning well. Motion 3.02 works OK (fast but doesn't always launch and youtube won't recognise audio on my videos...etc). My computer is pristine without any other programs installed apart from iLife and I haven't even installed any other FCS2 components.
