8-CORE: Number of Fans?

How many fans are there in the new 8-core Mac Pro? Do the fans produce any more noise than the G5 quads?

I thought my G5 was quiet until I booted up the Mac Pro which is as close to "silent" as any computer I have ever owned. The "octocore" is basically the same computer (except for the procs of course) but it may yield more overall fan noise than the quad due to the increased cooling needs.

  • Ultra 40 M2 core temperature and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm using a Sun Ultra 40 M2 with two dual core AMD opterons 2218 running openSUSE 10.3. I have been trying to use lmsensors to monitor core temperature and fan speeds. It seems to be working and I have been able to use gkrellm as well.
At low load I get temperatures around 40C on all cores (as measured by k8temp-hwmon), and fan speeds of about 1500 (rpm?; as indicated by lm85-hwmon2/fan1 and lm85hwmon2/fan2; only two fans?). However, at full load all core temperatures go up to 70-75C (steady) and fan speeds increase up to 2500 (which does not seem to be the maximum speed of the fans, as they are much noisier at booting stages). I wonder if such an increase in temperature is normal and how can I setup the fans' speed, if at all possible.
    Thanks,
    Marcos.

I'm currently running dual 2222se chips, an fx3500, and a single samsung 15000 146gb with an idle temp of 40-42c. But, I've run into a problem. For some reason, when my system boots, the fans run through the BIOS checks, but after post, the fans stop entirely. I've gone into the BIOS and fiddled with a few of the settings, but haven't been able to rectify the problem. Is there a specific setting that I may need to change to get the fans to actually run after post?
I got this workstation used, so I was unable to get the tech support information I was looking for without paying an additional fee. So any help whatsoever would be MUCH appreciated.
ChinGimLeong, as far as your idle temp goes, that sounds about right for the setup that you're running. You may want to look into purchasing some thermal grease and cleaning your chips and totally reapplying the grease. Improper application can hinder the heat transfer, causing a bit of a high idle speed. But if you apply too much, you WILL fry your board and processors. Another thing that you may want to try would be adding an external ventilation source to help get a bit of faster airflow. I use an 8 inch desk fan, it adds a bit of extra noise, but noise is nothing when you're protecting your system.
Let me know what you think.

  • Core Center/CPU Fan Speed Reduction

My CPU Fan Speed does not cut back after boot up.  If I go to the Cool'N'Quiet dialogue in Core Center, click the Cool'N'Quiet button and then apply, it reacts.  The fan speed reduces, and it regulates itself.  I have the latest Bios for everything, Cool'N'Quiet is enabled in the Bios, and the power management is set to minimal.  The speed cuts back to 800mhz no problem.
    CPU: AMD 64 2800
    MB: MSI K8T NEO FIS2R
    RAM: 2 x 256mb OCZ EL
    Video Card: Sapphire 9800Pro
HDD: 2 x Seagate 7200.7 SATA 80GB as RAID 0, 1 x Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40GB for back ups
    Soundcard:  Audigy 2

I too have had problems getting this to work properly. I tried a number of different combinations. This is what I found.
The most stable was to disable CnQ and enable the NB and CPU temp targetting bios options, setting both target temps to 40C, and reducing tolerance to 2C.
The big benefit of this (apart from the stability bit) was that no additional software has to be loaded or run.
I also tried CnQ (with the targetted temp stuff disabled). This worked better in the snese that dropping the CPU voltage and mult cools and quietens the CPU even further. But it suffers (on my system - Athlon64 3000+ Clawhammer) from three crucial problems:
    1. It varies NB fan speed based on CPU temp, not NB temp
    2. CnQ does not restore Max performance CPU state (i.e Mult = 10 and Vcore = 1.5) when you start up an app that uses a genuine 100% of CPU
    3. CnQ reduced the normal Vcore slighltly and made it vary more, causing system instability)
    4. You needed CoreCenter running, and its buggy as hell
I tied Speedfan, and it worked well. It is more controllable than the bios targeting rout. In the end I decided that the bios rout was better as it didn't depend on any application running - it makes the colling part of the hardware and I think that's right.

  • FANs:  New MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Fans OSX 10.4.8  Staying On Always

I just received my MBP C2D and as soon as you hit the power button, the fans come on and don't shut off. Its extremly loud. Sounds like a jet engine. I tried everything to stop it. I installed SMC Fan Control, Fan Control, and Core Duo Temp. The fan controls seem not to affect my fan rpm speed. Core duo temp says my core temp fall between 30C and 45C always. Every few hours (like 4-6 hours) the fan will shut off for 1 sec and then start up again and sometimes stutter on and off. Occasionally the fan will shut off for awhile after like 12 hours, until my MBP goes to sleep and then when it wakes, the fan comes on at full speed and remains on forever. I can shutdown the MBP and as soon as I hit the power button the fans come back on. I ran the apple diagnostics rom cd1 and all passed. I did notice after I entered the test that the fan speed went way down until you could barely hear it but I knew it was on. I suspect that my fans are stuck on at wide open rpm. I wonder if software may have a fault that could cause this. My MBP software is all up to date. Any tricks out there to diagnose this problem or fix it? What is the duty cycle of the fans? Should they come on when you first hit the power button before the OS is booted up? Anyone else with C2D fan problems? Please help!

the fan in the c2d model's is designed to be on all the time.
open up smc fan control - if you have no app's open besides smc and your computer is just sitting there idle it is normal for both of the fans to be running at 2000 rpm.
if youre laptop is idle with no apps running and the fans are at 5000rpm+ then i would be conserned, but a simple restart should help in that scenario.
everything you have mentioned is normal.

  • Core 2 Duo Fan Noise iMac......is it loud???

    Hi all,
I'm currently a G5 iMac owner and besides other things im starting to get quite frustrated by the ramping fans, especially on CPU intense apps. Its almost ike a plane taking off.
I was just wondering if anyone could let me know what the noise of the core 2 duo imac is like, is it quiet, can you hardly notice the fans etc. It would be great if somebody has had a G5 iMac and could compare the two.
    Thanks in Advance

My father has a 17" iMac G5 and it is definitely louder than my 20" iMac C2D, and that's when the machines are idle. There is noticeably more air coming from the top vents of the G5 than the C2D, and hotter air, too. Come to think of it, I've never heard the fans on my C2D reach full speed, not even once. The SuperDrive is the noisiest component in my C2D. Now, you really want to hear a plane taking off? Boot the G5 in target disk mode. Man oh man!

  • Core 2 Duo Fan Revisited

Just for Core 2 Duo MacBooks...
I just wanted to get some input on the normal behavior of specifically the Core 2 Duo MacBook. I have a Black MacBook Core 2 Duo and the fan runs constantly.
In normal usage, the fan stays at a resonable low hummm...
However, importing a CD into iTunes, zipping a large file, or doing anything that kicks the CPU usage over 30% makes the fans sound like jets.
The fan(s) don't stay on long enough to be a great bother, but it is still a little irratating.
    Is this normal?

Right - its completely normal I'm afraid. It's still not as loud as my HP Pavillion zd7000. That thing had 3 fans and sounded like a vacum cleaner.
So don't dread it too much - got to keep them intels cool =)

  • G5 Quad core 24/7 fan.

I have a had my new G5 Quad for a couple weeks and after several attempts at resetting the SMU and PRAM, pulling and reseating the fans I still have fans that run all the time when the Mac is on. The core temps have always been in the 98 - 104° range which doesn't seem too bad while doing photo and graphics stuff. Apple has only suggested the same things that I have already tried and I would like very much to avoid sending it in. It's not a bad distraction but it'd be great to not have to deal with it. Is this common? Anybody have ideas? Thanks in advance...
G5 Quad core   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   4 GB RAM, 500GB ATA HD, 23" HD Cinema Display

The problem is that the 7800's fans aren't controlled by Apple hardware. It's thermal controls are built into the card itself. I'm sure if Apple had something to do with the design, they would have made the air flow from front to back (of the G5 case) instead of from the gpu to the expansion slots compartment which requires the expansion slot fan to push all of it out of the case. If you really want quiet computing, then take a look at that Arctic Cooler. Otherwise, there's really nothing to do about it. The 6600 is a much slower gpu but has no fans which makes it nice for someone who needs a very quiet machine...but in all honestly, we record in Logic and our 7800 is nowhere near loud enough to be a bother. We were using a dual 867 MDD previously and the noise on that machine is at least double what the G5 puts out. When I'm working on the G5, I can still hear the MDD in the other room.

I don't really have enough information to give you a proper answer here, but it looks from your description of that part on amazon.com that it is only the fan (judging by package size). If so, then you'd be reusing your existing heatsink, which is fine as long as you only need the fan. The fan is held in place by aluminum tape and several crimped metal tabs, so you're either going to need to very carefully remove the tape when you remove your old fan, or get some high temperature tape, Kapton (polymide film) tape will work nicely for this. I also see that the fan comes with thermal paste, but I strongly recommend that you order some Arctic Silver #5 thermal paste instead, you can buy it on amazon.com and it works much better then the paste that comes with the fan you're considering purchasing.

  • Mac Pro freezes while asleep and fans go to high

I'm not sure if this is a problem specific to my Mac Pro Dual Quad Core MacPro3,1, but it has carried across an update to 10.6.5 and through a reinstall of Snow Leopard. Also, I don't have it on my MacBook Pro. So, I'm posting it in the Mac Pro forum.
Periodically (but now more frequently), when I go to my Mac Pro in the morning, after it has let itself go to sleep, the fans are on high and the machine won't wake up. I can't mount the machine's hard disk remotely from my MacBook Pro on the home network (which I usually can) and I have to hold the power switch down to force a restart. I've checked the Console logs (all messages) and the last message is usually sometime in the morning, sometimes as late as 5 or 6 am. But, there is no common thread to the last messages before the machine freezes, so I can't use that to identify what process was running when the machine froze.
This past weekend, I got up at 5:45 am and heard the fans running high and then went to watch the Formula 1 race on TV. The machine was frozen again when I got back to it at 8 am. So, the problem will happen whenever it wants, but only in the night (before 8 am and after midnight).
I've tried the following, with no success:
    • Reinstalled OS X 10.6 and followed the update path
    • Reset the SMC and PRAM
    • Rebooted the machine before going to bed, so that no user login process or software was running at the time of the freeze.
What is a good process to use for debugging this problem, from this point, since the Console Logs don't give me any consistent information? Is there a way to make the Console logs more verbose?
How can I get a list of all the maintenance processes that autostart on my machine at night? I'm assuming the problem is with a process installed by third party software, since I didn't clear the problem when I reinstalled a fresh copy of OS X.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I can't believe I missed this thread. I was sure I was the only one. This has been happening to me for months now, and of course out of warranty. I've tried so many things. Mac Pro Dual Core Intel. Fans go bananas for no discernible reason (according to Activity Monitor). I often return to an un-wakeable display despite the fans going full blast. Sometimes while I'm working, the thing just puts itself to sleep and doesn't want to wake up. Several times a week, the system hangs. (There's usually nothing complicated being done, although using iPhoto is pretty much guaranteed to freeze everything.) Almost always takes more than one hard restart in a row to get it back up, sometimes a DOZEN or more. Have no idea whether attempting a safe boot helps reduce the number of tries but it seems to. It's set never to sleep; I've reset the SMC and PRAM and deleted video preferences (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573). The issue pre-dated installing Snow Leopard and was unchanged by it.
By the way, the computer is at its most silent now - 600rpm each on power supply and exhaust fans, and 500 each on CPU and expansion according to iStat - and it's still pretty loud. Anyone else have that issue?

  • Fans go crazy every 2 days; constant SMC reset

So every 2 days I find my fans spinning at high speed, and the only way to fix the problem seems to be reset SMC. Anyone have a similar problem or thoughts on how to permanently fix the issue?

I have a similar problem, but the timing isn't as precise. I can turn on my machine and it will run for a few hours or a few days and then, according to iStat, the HD Expansion and Exhaust fan RPMs go way up and do not come down until I power-off. The cycle repeats, with random timing, when I power on again. I don't think it's the temperature sensor(s) as the fans appear to work for a period of time. Unless it's a case of the temperature reaching a certain value and the sensor then holding that value until power off. But that seems like an odd failure mode. iStat indicates normal operating temperatures for all components. I suspect it's a firmware issue. I have seen a number of fan related posts and I wish Apple would address this.

  • A6m processor disable dual core

Hello! A laptop HP 2310er, A6 processor 4400 m, there is a possibility to disable Dual Core, as the fan when overclocking is hampered?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Denis1882,
There is no way to disable the switchable graphics. With no options in the BIOS, and the software doesn't have the options to change it you will have a dynamic only setup. The graphics are controlled by the Radeon GPU. It will switch automatically if needed. Here is a document on the switchable graphics on Notebooks configured with Dual AMD GPUs.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Computer won't get past OS screen after unlock, even if I am still using 2 cores

    >Phenom II x2 555 BE
    >MSI 870a-g54
So I decided to unlock my CPU and have been experiencing a problem. I recently found out that if I even have "unlock core" function enabled in BIOS, even while running it with two cores, the computer won't get past the windows screen. With four cores enabled it obviously does the same. No matter what I try I cannot get past the Windows screen while having the unlock core function enabled.
My BIOS isn't on the latest version. I tried flashing it but I couldn't start it up even after flashed, it gave me the same problem described above. I reflashed it to the version I'm on now and it works, but I still can't unlock. What gives?
    Any help would be appreciated.
TL;DR: PC will run as Phenom ii X2 555, but not as Phenom ii x4 B55. Can't get past windows screen.

you need to provide more vcore to the cpu
first try to enable 1 core (core number 3) (disable core number 2 and 4) and increase some vcore. If booted then you have a good core.
Then try this with other core (core number 4) (disable core number 2 and 3), if booted then your both cores are unlockable and are good core (i.e, not defective)
then you can try all cores at same time with some voltage increase (vcore)

  • Dual Core 2.3 - almost silent

After a 747-like PCI-X machine I'm beginning to wonder if my new Dual core 2.3 fans are broken. I don't think they were even roused during QT Pro encodes of DV->H.264.
Certainly not complaining but it's had me reaching around the back to make sure there's something flowing out of the vents! These are very quiet machines.

I've been doing some research on noise, and wonderind whether the dual2.3 might be too much. Thanks for your post. I'm off to the Apple online store!
