8 devices, one account, iTunes being difficult - help?

OK, here goes:
We have two MacBook Pros, two iPhone3G, one iPhone 3GS, one iPhone 4S, an iPod Nano (1st gen) and an AppleTV (1st Gen).
Home network is on a Time Capsule (3rd Gen), which has USB connections for drives/printers/etc. I have two USB drives available to use.
The laptops are our main computers, used for everything including entertainment.
The 3G phones are used as iPod Touches by the kids (little kids, no phone service for them yet).
The 3GS is my active phone and the 4S is my wife's.
iTunes is kept updated to current versions: with 10,000 or so songs, 120 movies, many TV shows, many podcasts... etc etc.
We originally had two iTunes accounts, one mine, one my wife's. A long time back before even adding the 4G and 3GS into this mix, we abandoned using my wife's account because iTunes will not let HER listen to what I buy, and vice versa, becuase of the idiotic rules of purchase/licencing. So we have been just using my account for a long time. We have also been forced to sync the AppleTV to my laptop.
All this adds up to my laptop having to 'host' all the data for all the devices, which must all sync with it. This is a huge pain in my a*s, takes up a lot of my disk storage, and it seems dumb as dirt that we must use such an awkward method to use all of our devices.
Please note: I AM NOT GOING TO PAY TO USE 'THE CLOUD'. I have plenty of storage space of my own, thanks, and I don't need to pay subscription fees just to do what I can already do remotely - get to my data at home from elsewhere....
So here's what I hope to find out here in the support community:
Based on the equipment listed, and assuming I can manage configuring stuff (or will ask how),
1) Can I put the iTunes 'library' and data (the actual files) on a USB drive attached to the Time Capsule? {If Y goto A, if N goto 2.}
A) If yes to (1), can I then use iTunes from BOTH laptops and access this SINGLE library (assuming they both use the same iTunes account info)?
B) If yes to (1), can each laptop sync whatever device it wants to?
C) Can the AppleTV be told to sync itself to the library without iTunes running on a laptop? (Don't care if I need to hack it to do this, warranty is over)
2) If I cannot put the library and the files on a remote drive, HOW THE **** can I achieve this sort of functionality:
Access one library and one set of files from both laptops, sync any device from either laptop.
(Access WITHOUT having to have BOTH laptops on the same network, 'awake', and running iTunes)
BTW - "Home Sharing" does not seem to let me do anything more than "see" my library from my wife's laptop - useless for our needs unlessI'm missing something there. Seems to be set up for letting to teens access each others music.

Yes.

Yes, but... the two iTunes will not necessarily automatically stay in sync. If music is added to the iTunes library of one computer that same music will need to be manually added to the iTunes library of the other computer. However you may be able find some scripts at Doug's AppleScripts to help keep things up to date.

No. iOS devices and iPods can only be synced with one computer at a time. However one computer can sync to an unlimited number of iOS devices or iPods.

No. iTunes must be running for the ATV to sync.
You might want to think about getting a refurbished Mac Mini and making it your central media server. That would dramatically simplify your setup.

  • Two Devices, One Account

We have two devices, one account. We are able to access the account from either device. We will be spending the summer seperated by 2500 miles.  If we want to Skype each other, do we need to create another account?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi, Syringagal, and welcome to the Community,
Yes, absolutely, one of you will need to create a new Skype account to use.  The reason why is simple: a Skype account cannot call itself!  After the account is created, one of you needs to send the other a contact invitation, which the recipient will accept.
    Regards,
    Elaine

  • Syncing multiple devices, user accounts, iTunes accounts one computer

    I have a question that I can't find a clear answer.
I previous had one iPod touch and one iPad that I synched with my iTunes library. No problem. But now the wife has finally purchased a verizon iPhone and I want to be able to use my vast app collection for her phone.
Scenario is we each have separate user accounts (so we can maintain our own calendars and contacts, ect.). We each have our own ITunes accounts and our own iTunes libraries by default. She will not be purchasing much on her account though.
How do I, without creating a can of worms, create one library to sync to so I can put apps and music on her phone without erasing any of her separate information. I have read a lot on the subject and there does not seem to be a clear answer anywhere. Yes, I have read ht1495 but that does not seem to be exactly on point
Basically, I have 3 devices, 2 user accounts and 2 iTunes accounts but one computer only. I want to be able to have all iTunes stuff available on both user accounts and be able to have both people be able to read and write to the same library. I am sure there are plenty of people running into this issue with more and more people getting iPhones with verizon. It seems that it is easier to do with multiple computers than one computer.
So, I am looking for help or advice on the easiest way to accomplish this task.
    IMac   Mac OS X (10.6.6)

The easiest way to accomplish want you want is to transfer what content you want to the separate iTunes library under each user account. To transfer content from your library to your wife's library so that she can use it on her phone, do this:
    1. Launch iTunes under your wife's login.
    2. Sign her out of iTunes & then you sign in.
    3. iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Disable auto-sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected.
    4. Connect your phone, DO NOT SYNC!
    5. Store>Authorize this Computer(only have to do this once).
    6. File Transfer Purchases(all of the purchased content on your phone will be transferred to your wife's library).
    7. When complete, eject your phone, sign out of iTunes, sign your wife back in.
You can now sync whatever content you want to your wife's phone. Just remember, all updates to apps obtained using your account must be done while signed in using your account: sign wife out, you sign in, update apps, you sign out, sign wife in, sync her phone.
This way you can share content(permitted under the EUSLA) and still maintain your separate logins. Do the same under your login if you want to share content from your wife's library.
Just load whatever content you want to share on each others phones, transfer the content, then delete it from the respective phone if you don't want to keep it there.

  • Using two ipod touches on one account, playlist being deleted.

I have an iPod Touch 1stGen 8GB, and just recently, my roommate purchased a iPod touch 2ndGen 8GB. The Account is registered to me, but whenever he plugs his in to put new music on or take music off, it deletes his "On The Go" playlists. My iPod doesn't lose anything whenever I put it in, but just in case, I've selected to "Manually" sync music with both the iPods, and it still happens to his iPod. Is there anything I can do to stop it?

    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old

Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.
To make sure you only sync the media yoo want, configure iTunes syncing so that only checked media is synced to the idevices.

  • Multiple devices, one account

Is it legal to purchase an app and put it on more than one device with the same account? If so, is there a way to transfer an app from an iphone to an ipod touch when there is no wifi to connect the ipod touch to the internet/app store?
    Thanks!

I understand about syncing - that is not my question. I am asking if there is any OTHER way to transfer apps if you are in a situation where you do not have access to itunes or wifi (to re-download from the app store). There are apps to transfer pictures (i.e. Bump), so I was wondering if there is a way to transfer apps.

  • Multiple users and devices, one account

I have an iPad 1 and iPod Classic.  My wife has an iPhone 4s and an iPod Touch.  Sonny boy also has an iPod Touch.  They are all linked to my apple id and account.  How do I separate the account so that we can each manage our own devices from our single PC?
Though my wife has her own apple ID and account, everything is apparently linked to my account.
How can I set things up so we each manage our own devices, libraries, downloads, and accounts?

Yes, it does.  Method one.  Multiple Windows User account - to create different Windows User account for your wife and you son.  You already have your windows user account, you just need to add two more. - Go to Windows Control Panel, Users and add user.(remember to choose Administrator instead of standard user).
Each of you will log in to your own windows user profile to manage your own iTunes library, account and sync devices.
e.g. Windows startup screen for multiple User profile.

  • FaceTime issues with multiple devices & one account

I have an iPhone 5s, an iPad Mini and 2 iPod Touch devices, all on the same account and Apple ID. Is there any way to iMessage or FaceTime from one device to ONE other device(not all of them)? Thanks!

You can create another Appleid and use it only for FaceTime and/or messages on 1ipad.
In this manner you can maintain a parent account for all and have child accounts for messaging only.
You would simply log out of messages and log in with new id

  • Two devices on one account! Help!!!

I have two devices on one (my) itunes account. I have my itouch and my sister's ipad. What I didn't realize at the time was that everytime I synced my itouch to my itunes, everything she bought would be transfered onto mine (which I didn't want) Now I want to get a seperate itunes account for my sister, but she wants everything to still be on her ipad (the stuff she bought on my itunes) I have no clue how to go about doing this. If it helps, I got a new itouch that i am waiting to sync on my itunes for the first time. Should I just get a new account for myself since I have a new itouch? Please help! Any information would be great

It will difficult to separate into two iTunes accounts. One of you will likely loose apps. What you could do to continue to use one account is launch iTunes and connect your device(s) to your Mac. Select your device from the left sidebar and navigate to the apps tab at the top of the window that opens. At the bottom of the list of apps you will see a checkbox labeled 'Automatically Sync New Apps' uncheck the checkbox. Sync or Apply the changes and then repeat this with your sister's device(s). iTunes will now only sync apps you download on your devices and same for hers unless you manually check one or more of the apps that the other party downloads using this same iTunes window. Just an idea to throw out there. I can walk you through the music and other sections if those are involved just let me know.

  • Multiple devices one itunes account

    Hi,
I have an itunes account for my iphone and ipad, now my kids have just got ipod touches for Christmas which i have added as new devices to my itunes account. When my daughter sends an imessage it appears on all the devices linked to my account, including granny's new iphone! How can I stop this, do I have to have separate email accounts for them, as they also want to facetime, help please!

I have ipod touch, When you register the ipod Touch give it a unique name. I have also connected all three at same time unless there is an issue I have missed I have had no problem. YOu can also set an option so that when you connect the device itunes will not start and then you can manually start it and choose the device you want to upgrade..etc.

If you enabled Find my iPhone then you should use that. If not, I'm afraid you're out of luck for finding it.
To manage your devices, go to Your Account in iTunes.

I started to do that then it said that this will become their apple I.D or similar and then I thought that will disconnect them from the same iTunes?  I want them still on my iTunes as they are only young (8 and 10)?  Or have I got this all wrong and even if I do set them up with a different e-mail will they still be on my itunes?  For example if they want to purchase an App will it still go through my account even if they use their ipod?
