8 point garbage matte; not able to keyframe?

I made a first attempt at green screen and the results were imperfect; I thought I could use the matte to improve results but I can't seem to get it to keyframe and alter the shape during the duration of the clip (the subject is moving). If I need to activate something to be able to keyframe the garbage matte, please advise - thanks

What version of the software are you using? You should be able to go into the keyframe graph in the viewer. There are diamond keyframe buttons for each of the points.

  • Garbage Mattes not letting me move points

I am trying to use a Garbage Matte at several points in a video, which worked fine the other day; I was able to add a garbage matte around a person using a 50-point matte plugin, which was nice and smooth. Trying to add another similar effect, it no longer works; the red + appears when I click the + in the filter menu, and I can move the red + around, but it does nothing. I can set all of the points but the effect is not applied and nothing is cut out.
This is not something to do with the external plugin; I have tried this with the built-in 8-point and 4-point Garbage mattes, but they have done the same thing. Why is the effect not working? What can I do to apply/activate the effect?
    I am using FCE 4.

    ADDITIONAL INFO:
It appears that all of my video filters are not functioning properly. I added the "Basic 3D" effect to a clip the other day, and now when I tried to modify the clip, the entire filter stopped functioning. The same happens to the 50-point matte I set up the other day. When I change them at all, they stop working!
My video filters in general seem to not work! Help!!!

  • Turning off the keyframe numbers on an 8 point Garbage Mattes?

I'm trying to turn off the key frame numbers on the 8 point Garbage Matte because they cover up parts of the paths/outlines I am trying to create...
Can they be removed or at least moved or shrunk?

Keyframes don't have numbers. Are you referring to the point labels? If so, in the Filter tab of the Viewer window, check the box "Hide Labels."

  • Export 8-point Garbage Matte.

I have been using 7toX to transfer old projects in to FCP X recently, and have discovered that the 8-point Garbage Matte effect is no longer included.
That being said, the effect obviously didn't transfer over with the clip.
How can I export only the clip with the matte effect from FCP 7, and import into FCP X, and still retain "transparency"?
    It's a simple project.
Clip on V1, and second clip on V2 with the 8-point matte applied, revealing V1 below.
I have soloed the V2 clip and set In and Out and exported to ProRes 422 quicktime and imported into FCP X, but the background is simply black, and does not retain the transparency.
I am familiar with this process in Photoshop, by starting with a transparent background, but do not know the worflow with FCP.
    Thank you for your help.

Hey, thanks a lot! Did the trick. You learn something new everyday..
Just to clarify, for future reference:
Soloed the clip with matte effect, exported to prores4444 with "millions of colors +", dropped in to FCP X and matte/alpha were intact!

  • Garbage Matte Not Masking?

I must be doing something stupid because this should really work according the manual:
    1. Video 1 has an AVI file.
    2. Video 2 has a PSD file created in Photoshop.
    3. I drag the 4-point Garbage Matt Key effect to the PSD clip.
4, I use my mouse to drag each of the corner control points so that it bounds a small rectangle on the PSD. I can clearly see the control points and the bounding lines have correctly selected the desired shape.
    5. However, nothing is being masked. The entire PSD, including the area outside of the 4 points remains visible over the clip on Video 1.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

    PSD:
    Type: Photoshop
    File Size: 4.0 MB
    Image Size: 720 x 480
    Pixel Depth: 32

    48000 Hz - Stereo
    [fx] indicator is visible
Other effects (e.g. opacity and motion) work fine on the PSD.

    Mac Pro running OSX 10.5.7
    2 x Dual Core 2.66 GHz
    13GB RAM
    Radeon X1900 512MB VRAM
Glad to know it is working fine on others machines. Here is a screen shot. The greyish clip in the background is Video 1. The brownish clip, Video 2, which I scaled down so you can see it on top of Video 1 is visible in its entirety, The bright area of the marqee  is surrounded by the 4-point matte.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Garbage matte not working!!!

I am having this problem where the lines and bounding boxes around a matte 4,8 or 16 point do not actually line up with the edge of the matte, making it virtually impossible to get the matte to the proper place. Furthermore in many cases the video will vanish completely when a matte is added unless the matte positions are left unchanged...
long story short, this severely limits what i can do with my projects!!!

    >i just tried your suggestion of applying the matte to a duplicate layer
Not what I tried to explain.
    New example:
Video layer 3: Copy of the clip (or background), NO garbage matte applied here.
Video layer 2: The clip with the garbage matte applied
    Video layer 1: Background
Click on clip in Video layer 2, and then click on the garbage matte effect in "Video Effects".
Now do the adjustments to the garbage matte.
Deselect the garbage matte effect in "Video Effects" and remove (or click the eye-ball) in Video layer 3.
This (the above) works quite fine for me.
Your other problem I have never seen, but you should see if you somehow have managed to get keyframes when you have moved the still around when placing it to where you wanted it.
Some people have said that the garbage matte bug has been fixed in CS4.

  • Problem with garbage Matte 8-point

I filmed a video in one go and did not touch the camera at all. I split the clip and then put one on top of the other to use the eight-point garbage matte effect. The problem is the two clips don't match. There's a small difference in colour and it doesn't look like the two clips are aligned with each other.

  • Cannot set points in Garbage Matte

I am trying to use the garbage matte effect and this is my problem.  No matter which I apply (4,8 or 16 point), I cannot figure out how to access the set points.  The initial matte appears on the clip, and I can adjust the matte using the x and y axis (numerically), but I cannot grab and set the points of the matte on the clip itself in the control window.  All I can do is seletc one of the four corners and move the entire clip around.  Can you provide some insight into what I might try to get this to work?  Thanks.

    MaineHomes
I have found that the visualization of the garbage matte bounding box points is not version specific.
The matter goes to having your Timeline video selected and the Garbage Matte Panel selected in Properties Panel (in your case)....however, the following is an example from Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit
Timeline Video Selected, but 16-Point Garbage Matte in Properties Palatte not...; consequently, no points seen to adjust.
Timeline Video Selected and 16-Point Garbage Matte Panel selected/highlighted in Properties Palette
Happens to me all the time, no matter what version. So, it has made a lasting impression.

  • Thin white outline around garbage matte

    Hi All,
I have a problem with a garbage matte rendering with a thin white line around it.  Basically I've got 2 tracks of video.  The bottom track is green screen footage, but its not a very clean key and some of the center of the image is being keyed away. So I put a copy of the footage on track 2 and used an 8 point garbage matte to keep part of the image intact.  The garbage matte is keyframed throughout the clip.  For whatever reason the matte has a thin white line around it when the sequence is exported. I'm attaching a stillframe to illustrate the problem.  Anyone know why this is occuring?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I see no thin white line in that still image. Where am I supposed to be looking?
Wait, okay, you could have been morespecific what to look for or that we really needed to boost the magnification.
ONly visible when exported? Not visible in the timeline at the serquence settings?
As suggested, a feather will blend the two layers a bit better but you might end up with a feathered thin white line, too.
More specifics, what's the source footage format? What the sequence setting? What's the export format?

  • Export Error with Garbage Mattes

    Hey Everybody!
I've been having an issue with exporting one of my films using FCP.
I had to use a four point garbage matte to block out some unwanted background lights and create a black void around my actors.
It looks great in the FCP viewer (as you can see in the first image), but when I export it to .mov, .mp4, and .avi, the matte stands out. It doesn't blend in to the other black color from the raw video footage (as you may be able to see around the woman in the second image. Zoom in closely and notice the video grain in the black surrounding her).
Is there anything I can do to make sure the video file that's exported is an exact replica of what I see in my FCP viewer?
    Thanks!
    -Will

Your image that came from the camera has noise in it. Probably caused by a combination of low lighting levels and camera exposure settings
The area covered by the Garbage matte is pure, digital black.
Add a noise reduction filter to the camera image (this will make it slightly softer).
Or... add noise enhancement to the digital black to balance out with the camera footage.

  • Garbage Mattes...RED Crosshairs???

I am trying to work on some garbage mattes and I am noticing a RED Crosshair when I am trying to adjust the clip. It's removing a giant chunk of the clip automatically when I simply click say Point 1 for example. I didnt even drag the marker yet and half the clip is gone. Even when I hold down the Apple key its still not allowing me to adjust the clip like I want to. Is some setting on that should be off?

When you use the garbage matte, each of the corners is represented by a tiny red cross on the canvas. These are probably the crosshairs you are talking about. In the "Filters" window you see Point 1, Point 2 etc.- and then to the right of each is a button with a cross. If you click that button, then the point will show up in the canvas as a red cross and you can move it. If you click in the canvas far from the red cross you've chosen, then you may get freaked out because it will make drastic changes on your matte. Try clicking on the "corners" buttons in the "Filters" window and you'll see the crosses highlighted one at a time. These are your matte edges or corners that you can drag to make whatever shape you need. Once you move them, even a little, you have to re-click the button to get them back. It took me a while to master moving the red crosses around, but once I figured it out - what a great thing the garbage matte is! I wish there was a 32 point garbage matte.
Also, to see the whole matte, you may need to shrink your window size in the canvas - do this by choosing 50% from the pulldown menu below the small oval button on the top left of your canvas.

  • Premiere Pro shuts down while edditing garbage matte

    Hi there,
I'm creating a movie in black and white, with only the person in color. Therefore I'm using a eight or sixteen point garbage matte. For some reason things don't work as the should do, since yesterday evening. I was doing exactly the same as I always did, but right now, when I move an anchor point, a message box pops up, saying: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Pro to shutdown. We will attempt to save your current project." Even when I restart the computer, or Premiere, the same happens.
I'm running Premiere Pro 4.1 (latest update) on Windows Vista, with 2GB of memory. Do you guys know what's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pim

I agree. Two GB of RAM is about what it takes to just run Vista. Memory is very cheap. I'd first run out and flesh out the MoBo with 4GB (32-bit), or more if you're on Vista-64. Fill that puppy up and try again.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • CS3: Garbage Matte is moved after exporting movie?

I hope someone can help me with this problem i'm having in Premiere Pro CS3:
With the 4/8/16 point garbage matte tool i have made a composition of different video-objects. When i export the movie some of these objects are being misplaced from their original position.
What can be the cause of this problem? I have tried exporting the sequence in different ways/qualities but this doesn't seem to help.
    Thanks in advance!

If the garbage matte give you trouble use the titler and draw
your matte with the pentool and use it as a track matte.
There is one advantage to this methode, you can feather the
matte by adding a Fast Blur.

I have a bunch of old tapes that I am trying to put on my computer.  I have Final Cut Pro 6 and everything hooks up nicely except I am not able to mark in and out points or use capture now.  Does anyone out there know why that would be the case?
I appreciate any help I can get.

What VTR? How is it controlled?
What are your capture settings? Firewire Protocol?
