8-way Random Erase

I'd like to know if anyone anywhere has ever successfully finished an 8-Way Random Erase on their computer. I started one Friday on my PowerMac G4 with a 40G drive. The following Wednesday it's half way through and doesn't look like it's moving. I've searched all over the internet and I've yet to read about someone who's started this and let it successfully finish. Because who's got that kind of time?
So, if you or someone you know has a friend who has a friend who's done an 8-way random erase and let it finish successfully, please, I'm interested to know if my efforts to do one are futile.

Hi kimrru,
unless you work for the CIA the 8-way Random Erase is
completely useless. Usually Macs freeze somewhen
during the process after a few days. I cannot
remember anyone who did the 8-times erase
successsfully but there were dozens of users on these
boards who reported the freeze.
The "Write-Zeros-to-disk" option is more then enough.
Hi,
I'm having the same problem as Kimrru. Can I damage the computer if I stop the 8 way Random Erase? What is the best way to stop the process?
Thanks,
Joe

  • Pre Plus randomly erasing phone numbers

My Palm Pre Plus is randomly erasing phone numbers since I received it last Thursday.  I suspect it has something to do with Synergy's syncing to my various accounts.
Example situation:  Yesterday morning a friend texted me to see if I wanted to meet at a coffee shop.  I told him yes, and we went and had coffee.
This morning, I went to text the same friend, only to find that his phone number was no longer listed under his contact profile.  My only messaging option was through Google Talk (which I don't think counts) - even though my txt's from yesterday were still listed, had the little SMS marker - AND his phone number - next to them, in small grey font.  But with no phone number, there was no SMS option.
I tried chatting with a Palm support person before leaving for coffee yesterday, who at first didn't believe that I had upgraded my phone to 1.4.  They hadn't gotten the memo of its release yet.  The situation was dropped with the hope that 1.4 had fixed the problem.  It hasn't.
    What's the deal here?
Also - I continue to have that infamous double type or missing letter problem with the keyboard.
In addition - does anyone else find it incredibly silly that virtually my entire contact list is impermanent?  In other words, half of the information relies solely on my contacts maintaining their Facebook profiles and including their phone number and such.  If a person's phone number has been pulled into my contacts from Facebook, and they decide to erase their Facebook account - boom - I no longer have their phone number.  I suppose I could enter a duplicate phone number entry - but who has time?  And with the above issue, how do I know it will even stay there?

I have my Google account as my default profile, however most of my contacts were pulled in from Facebook and I manually entered phone numbers when necessary from my old Centro.  I re-entered my friend's phone number and it has stuck around since last weekend, so hopefully as the other user above mentioned, it's just one of those things that happens early on and then sorts itself out.
I did a bit of testing today, to see how my phone was syncing to my google account, which was syncing back to Address Book on my Mac.  If I delete a contact on my phone, or any part of a contact's information, it is erased from my google contacts on the next sync, and thus my Mac's address book on the computer's next sync.  So now, all this information seems tied to me keeping my phone up to date.  I wish it was just additive, not destructive.
I'm still somewhat upset over the apparent fact that my accounts are impermanent.  I don't like the idea that I have no permanent record of a contact.  If a friend is being pulled into my contacts from Facebook, and she has no other account associated with me, it seems that their existence in my address book is dependent on them maintaining their Facebook profile.  I have no way to "lock it in" as it were.  It doesn't seem that facebook-only contacts added into my Google contacts either.  It's all a bit confusing.
I will have Verizon look into the keyboard issue.

  • Why is my iphone4 randomly erasing photos?

My iPhone4 has in the last month started to randomly erase some photos off my camera roll. No ryhme or reason. Just today since lunch I've lost over 2 dozen photos, and in the last month over 100 more. I'm at work, so I haven't even done anything with it. I back up to the cloud each night when I charge my phone, but I haven't paid for extra space so I'm not backing up my photos (yet). Is this happening to anyone else? All other apps and functions on my iPhone4 seem to be functioning normally. One of my favorite things to do is amature photography with my iPhone, and editing photos with all the cool apps available. I can't do this if they are going to be erased.

i wish i could go back to tmobile

  • Is there any way to erase all files from a broken macbook without switching it on??

My macbook air died when I stupidly spilled nail polish remover over the keyboard- this was actually about two years ago and for various reasons I've only just gotten round to figuring out the best way to dispose of it. The problem is that it no longer switches on at all (and doesn't charge either), so I have no way of erasing my files and personal information and I'm just not comfortable recycling it knowing there could still be stuff stored on there. Does anyone know of a way to wipe the memory without switching it on, or have any suggestions for what I can do with it otherwise?

    1. Click here and follow the instructions; if you have a different MacBook Air model, see the links at the bottom of that page.
    2. Put it in an enclosure(any large enough computer store should have them) and erase it, or just keep the drive.

Hi, no eMacs had G3s, only G4s. Is it maybe an iMac G3?

No, you need to connect it to a computer running iTunes to manage the iPod's content (or erase it).

No, Leopard 10.5.8 is as high as you can go on a PPC Mac.

  • IPhone has just randomly erased all of my texts messages, can I get them back?Ask your question.

iPhone had just randomly erased all of my texts, can I get these back?

You are correct, they do keep a record of texts sent and received and subscribers can access this information themselves using their online account.
They do do keep the content of text messages at all just like they do not keep copies of phone conversations. If the text message is deleted from the sending and receiving instrument it is gone. Getting a court order for the content of text messages from a provider would be a worthless endeavor as it is well known that information is not available.
If a text message has not been successfully delivered the system will continue to try to send it by accessing the senders device and resending the message; you are right they are not from cosmic radiation or echoes from the moon, they are from the device that sent the message.

If the Mac came with Mountain Lion or Lion, press Command, Option and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility, erase the disk and reinstall Lion or Mountain Lion. • Is there a way to erase data without reinstalling the system?

    Hi
I have an old PowerMac G5 that I want to sell. I want to erase the hard drive, but I no longer have the system disks. Is there any way to erase the data without reinstalling the system?

    Hi-
You could set up a new user (Administration) account, and then delete the old user account that has data related to it.
Once that is done, if you want a more secure elimination of the data (so it cannot be scavenged) clone the drive to a second drive, and then you can erase and write zeros to the first drive.
Reclone the cloned version back, and you should have a very clean, "fresh" system drive.
    Use SuperDuper! for the cloning.
Mind you, I haven't tried that process, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Keep a copy of the system drive (backup), just in case......

  • My Droid RAZR M randomly erases my text and resets my screen, HELP!

I purchased a DROID RAZR M back in Nov. 2012 after eharing many good things about it.  I've been a DROID fan since day 1 and havent had too many issues.  RIght now I am stationed overseas in a country called Kyrgyzstan and we have Wi-Fi throught the whole base.  SInce I left the USA, my phone will randomly erase text that I type or reset the screen or **** of movies I am watching.  Its like the moment I left the USA my phone lost its mind.  Is there anything I can do?   Also do they make a anti-virus software for phones?

        @rlmurray3
I, first, would like to thank you for your service. We truly appreciate your dedication to our nation.
I have reviewed the information that you have brought forth. It does sound like the phone has a mind of its own since the move. I would suggest clearing data and cache on the device. You may do this by entering the Web Browser, selecting Menu and Selecting Settings. From the the “Advanced” Section select Privacy and Clear Browsing Data.
I would also suggest clearing data and cache on any application that is used often.  You may do this by choosing Settings, selecting Apps, once you have reached apps. Slect the “All” tab and select “force stop.” Once you have completed this, you will be able to clear data from the “Storage” section.
I’m sure you will find this information beneficial. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

  • Is there a quick way to erase everything right back to like new?

What's the easiest way to erase everything and return a macbook pro back to what it was when you purchased it.

There are two methods, a reinstall of OS X only and a erase and install, which will wipe out your data and programs.
With 10.7 and later operating system versions, you really can't go back to exactly the way OS X was when you first bought it as Apple downloads OS X now and won't give a older copy, only the most recent updated issue in that version.
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • I am giving my old MacBook Air to my granddaughter.  What is the most efficient way to erase all the data on it?

I am giving my old MacBook Air to my granddaughter.  What is the most efficient way to erase the data?

    You have two options.....
One is to do a clean reinstall of your OS - if you still have the USB installer that came with your Macbook Air...
The second option is to create a new user (your granddaugher's name).....Deauthorize your Macbook Air from your Itunes and Appstore.....
Restart your Macbook after you've created your granddaughter's user name, login under your granddaughter's username and delete your username.
Search your Macbook for your old files and delete them.....
    Good luck...
