80,000 photos - Is it time to leave iPhoto?
I have over 80,000 photos in iPhoto on 4 computers and 2 or 3 externals, most are organized into events or albums, lots of duplicates, a lot of edited photos.
I really need to combine all the libraries, sort out all the duplicates, but also keep things organized. I have tried many times to import photos from one computer to another, but this always compounds the mess. iPhoto doesn't seem to recognize duplicates and happily adds them to the library, even though the meta data appears identical.
I do want one library with the following:
- served from a central NAS
- keep existing edits, Events, and Albums intact
- to use multiple computers to add to Master Library
- efficient sorting of duplicates
I don't want:
- to switch between multiple libraries.
- to start from scrach in reorganizing.
- I don't really need editing capabilities beyond what iPhoto is capable of (Aperature editing is too complex for our needs.)
The computers are MacBooks and iMacs running various versions of iPhoto '08-current. I have a 3TB NAS Raid to serve from.
1. Is iPhoto the correct solution for this size photo collection?
2. Is there an efficient way to combine everything and still use iPhoto?
Thanks
Use iPhoto Library Manager to merge iPhoto Libraries. The version with this capability requires a $20 purchase. It can be set to avoid duplicates in the process.
iPhoto is good for 250,000 images.
Note that iPhoto is not a server application. Only one user can open the Library at a time. So if one user is logged in the others are locked out. Server apps start at about the $200 mark or so.
Bluntly, if the NAS is central to your plans just forget about iPhoto. You can't run an iPhoto Library from a NAS. I also would not recommend running this set up wirelessly. If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
If you're fixed on using the NAS you'll be exporting from iPhoto and starting over with another app.

Transfering 1 photo at a time?? iphoto 6
every time i want to transfer photos, it transfers the whole camera. I just took one photo, and i like to keep my old photos on the camera. Is it possible to transfer the photos that I want, and keep the rest on?
lateralus1082,
you cannot transfer one photo at the time with iPhoto, but you can with Image Capture.
When you connect the camera, launch Image Capture (in Applications) and chose "Download some". Remember you have to manually import the photo in iPhoto after you imported it.
Having said that, iPhoto is smart enough not to import duplicate photos. Say that you import 30 pictures from your camera, then you take 5 more. Next time you connect the camera, iPhoto will prompt that it found some duplicates, and will ask you what you want to do. Chose not to import duplicates, and you should get what you want.
Hope this helps! -
I am a 'newby' to the discussion world. Hope I am doing this right. How best to save photos? I want to protect my photos (15,000 of them) by putting themon a portable drive and storing it in my safety deposit box. Is it better to export them all, dragthe Photo file, use Time Machine – or are there better alternatives?
Welcome to the discussions! You can use Time Machine and I would also recommend for you to manually copy your iPhoto Library (on your Pictures folder) to an external drive/thumb drive so you can restore it from there should you loose your TM backup. Exporting them from iPhoto would not preserve the libraries' integrity neither your originals, should you choose to edit them in iPhoto.

My wife is converting from iPhoto to Aperture due to large library ( 33,000 photos, 109GB). Performance-wise, is it better to convert to Aperture library and leave on the 250GB internal drive or convert and store externally?
You are welcome.
convert and store externally?
What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

Import Time for 45,000 Photos
Hi there.
Im new to Mac and also Aperture.
I'm importing my 45,000 photo colection that I have stored on an external hard drive into Aperture.
I am setting it up as a referenced library and am using a 1TB drive i grabbed from my PC which is now in a USB3.0 casing.
I have a rMBP 2.6Ghz with 8MB ram.
I have tried a couple times to import and then walk away and it seems to be choking. The computer I think is going into sleep mode (its plugged in) and then when I wake it up..it begins to pick up importing again. At least I think it is....I cant really tell and the "processing" status window isnt really giving me useful information.
My question is how long something like this should take to import? Ive tried a couple times and even left it overnight.
Also should I maybe try importing in smaller batches?
Any help would be great.
Thanks!Eric-
Organize into Projects first and import one Project at a time like Léonie suggested; it should only take a couple of minutes to import each Project. Personally I set 500 as my arbitrary maximum number of images in each Project but your mileage will vary. Experiment to see what number of maximum images in a Project may or may not slow your particular setup/workflow down; my guess is that 500-image projects will be fine unless maybe you are shooting a D800 or if there are scan files involved.
Please let us know how many image files of what size you find you can import in a reasonable time (less than 5 minutes). E.g. X files per minute at a certain file size. I am curious. You may find 1000-image-sized Projects work fine; or you may find that the import rate slows significantly when Project size exceeds 150 image files.
Before importing you should:
• Back up the originals before importing into Aperture. This is an absolutely essential step to a safe workflow.
• Decide what keywords to batch-apply to each Project.
From an earlier post of mine on this topic:
Projects should be just that: individual-shoot (i.e. time) based projects rather than some kind of organizing tool for all the architectural photos or whatever. For performance reasons personally I keep each Project under 500 20-MB images, making a second Project if the shoot is large. E.g.
110829_KJones_Wed_A,
110829_KJones_Wed_B,
110829_KJones_Wed_C, etc.
One or more albums will always organize the KJones wedding pix together anyway. All three Projects (110829_KJones_Wed_A, 110829_KJones_Wed_B, 110829_KJones_Wed_C) would have the keyword "KJones_Wed" applied to each pic, which allows an Album "KJones_Wed" to be quickly created at any time.
The way I look at it conceptually:
Aperture is a database (DB), and each image file lives in one Project.
Albums are just collections of Pointers that point to individual image files living in one or more Projects. Since they just contain pointers, albums can be created or deleted at will without affecting image files. Very powerful. And Albums of pointers take up almost zero space, so they are fast and do not make the Library size grow.
Keywords can be applied to every image separately or in batches. Keywords are hugely powerful and largely obviate the need for folders. Not that we should never use folders, just that we should use folders only when useful organizationally - - after first determining that using keywords and albums is not a better approach. Most of the time folders are inappropriately used.
As one example imagine the keyword "flowers." Every image of a 100,000 images Library that has some flowers in it has the keyword flowers. Then say we want to put flowers in an ad, or as background for a show of some kind, or to print pix for a party, or even just to look for an image for some other reason. We can find every flower image in a 100k-image database in 2 seconds, and in another few seconds create an Album called "Flowers" that points to all of those individual images.
Similarly all family pix can have a keyword "family" and all work pix can have a key word "work." Each individual pic may have any number of keywords. Such pic characteristics (work, family, flowers, etc.) should not be organized via folders.
So by using keywords and albums we can have instant access to every image everywhere, very cool. And keywords and albums essentially take up no space in the database.
Another (IMO poor) approach would be to use a folder "Family" for family pix, a folder "Flowers" for flowers pix and another folder "Work" for work pix. IMO such folders usage is a very poor approach to using an images database (probably stemming from old paper or film work practices). Note that one cannot put an image with family in a field of flowers at a work picnic in all three folders; but it is instant with keywords.
As an aside note that empirically many users find that even though the Aperture DB can contain hundreds of thousands of image files, no problem, individual Projects should be limited in size for speed reasons. Personally I limit Projects to a maximum of ~400 to ~500 RAW NEF files, but hardware and workflows vary.

I have set up a new external hard drive and Im trying redirect LR to the new hard drive. I have over 30,000 photos and Im trying to see to see if there is a way to all photos located without having to go thru each folder at a time
http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
See Figure 4 -
1.) How do I organized my photo album on my ipad?
2.) How do I remove an album on my ipad?
3.) i have taken over 1,000 photos on ipad, now it won't sync stuff to the ipad because it said there is not enough space. I want to delete some past synced photos from the computer to create space, but I don't know how to find it on computer. It sycned a portion of a file onto the ipad which is useless to me so I want to delete it all & start fresh.
4.) I was thinking about copying some of those photos over so it would show up as new data maybe then it would sync to my ipad as a new & competed album. Or will this create more problem because it would only be creating more photos?
5.) By the way, I don't know how to use dropbox or anything like it, so I take photos of some files & web screen that I use regularly to always have access regardless of internet access. That is why I have so many photos. But I want to be able to separate & organized them by files, web screens, or topics. I also want to be able to delete & update as needed.
6.) If needed I am willing to delete 4 G of downloaded app to create space. Will this help the space issue? Also could I just leave the downloaded app to my computer only & only sync to to ipad as needed, since I don't need app as regularly. I NEED "photo" ALL of the TIME! I am out in the field, instead of carrying stack & stack of papers, I carry ipad with photo of these daily needed papers!1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad -
Help! I accidentally uploaded my entire photo library -- 18,000 photos -- to the Book I am working on. Now everything runs slow, and I can't figure out how to get them out quickly. It takes several seconds to just delete one photo. I don't want to delete the entire book, because I already spent a lot of time laying out 30 pages. How do I get rid of all the extra photos from the book?
Four choices
1 - delete the book and start over
2 - delete the extra photos in the book
3 - resotore your backup from before you did this
4 - leave them in the book and ignore the extras

I have over 50,000 photos in the current iPhoto Library. I need to download 3,000 more from trip to Spain. Can/should I make a new iPhoto Library? How do I do that?
1) I had the same problem bedeviling me for over a month
(with the Apple Store people unable to figure out a solution!).
It turned out that the solution was exceedingly simple and easy:
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/18554/why-isnt-iphoto-11-showing-an-eve nt-present-in-the-library
I have no idea how it happened, but like Asbjornu, "I had managed to sort the events "manually" (View > Sort Events > Manually) which hid the newly created events in-between my rather large amount of existing events. Sorting by date (View > Sort Events > By Date + Descending) shows my new events first in the list as they should."
I left out a huge whoop when this (simple) command solved everything.
2) Yes, you can create another iPhoto library
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505?viewlocale=en_US
To create a new photo library:
Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, click Create New.
Type a name and choose a location to store the new photo library.
Click Save.
Afterwards, iPhoto will sometimes ask which library you want to open.
3) As far as the corrupted iPhoto is concerned,
trash or anything else, try rebuilding iPhoto (but
only after making a copy of your current iPhoto
library on an external disk, naturally).
Once the copy is made, close iPhoto, and
wait until you won't be using iPhoto or your computer for a long time
(like before you go to bed). Close all other apps, or as many as possible,
and reopen iPhoto while holding down the Option and Command keys
at the same time. Keep the buttons down until you get a page with a series
of half a dozen unmarked boxes or more, mark them ALL, launch rebuild,
and come back in the morning… -
More than 1,000 photos in Photostream, Events as well?
I made a clean install of Lion and recuperated about 5,000 photos in a regular folder structure. Never opened iPhoto after the clean install.
Yesterday, I upgraded iPhoto on all devices, including my MBP and opened iPhoto for the first time. I activated Photostream and now I have the advertised 1,000 photos in Photostream but overall, I find now 2,300 photos and 79 events. I did not import anything in iPhoto, did not open iTunes and have never synced iPhone and iPad over iTunes with this machine. How is that possible?
I had my 5,000 photos still on my iPhone and iPad where I installed yesterday also iPhoto for iOS. Did Photostream recuperate all of those photos? Did it sync them back from my mobile devices?
Anybody any ideas? You're talking about photo stream (up to 1000 photos for up to 30 days). Photo stream is not a photo storage service, in fact, icloud doesn't provide a photo storage; the only other thing it does is perform backups of the Camera Roll, if you have set that up correctly. You should be syncing photos to your computer for archiving, don't trust the pics to icloud!
Aside from storing on your computer, there are other services that provide storage - like Dropbox.
Read this... import photos to your computer...

My concern is I accidentally deleted something associated with the application; I was trying to free up some space on my Mac. I have over 10,000 photos in my iPhoto!! I should figure out how to back up my photos, assuming I can regain access to them.... Why will iPhoto not open....it just spins then gives me this lengthy problem report.
THANKS A MILLION.... but please remember my username when you reply, I am so new to Macs that you may need to dumb it down for me...

From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old), unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto. -
i tried selecting a folder with less than 50 photos as my source, importing photos phase still takes longer than what sounds normal for such a small number of photos, but the job is done nevertheless.
But what is worth noting, is that even if i run another pass of sync without touching the photos section (i.e. neither adding nor deleting any photo from the previous sync) it still takes the same amount of time on the "importing photos" phase.
when i select the actual photo library folder as my source (the one containing the 107,000 photos); at that point even selecting a subfolder in it that contains merely 10 photos generates the same dilemma.
i tried photoshop elements, spent like 4 hours building my library there, hoping that if i select it as the source in the photo tab in itunes, things would work out for the better, i was mistaken!
at this point am really out of options, and need some serious help.
few extra diagnostic infos:
the above manifests even on other devices like my iphone5.
the computer used is not exactly top notch but works for my Autocad drawings, i figure it should suffice for itunes (Dell Pentium D 3.19Ghz, 4GB Ram, 3TB HD, running windows 7 (32bit) ultimate)
the above persists when i sync wirelessly (not a USB bug issue)
please any help is appreciated, if you need further details, kindly let me knowi tried selecting a folder with less than 50 photos as my source, importing photos phase still takes longer than what sounds normal for such a small number of photos, but the job is done nevertheless.

Moving from iPhoto to Aperture with 15,000+ photos
Hi all.
I have iPhoto11 set up as manage mode for 15,000+ photos (around 350 "events"). I was having issues with iPhoto hanging up and being reallly slow when scrolling up and down through the Event layout even with the "thumbnails" or event previews minimized as much as possible. At first I though I might need more ram, so I went from 2 gigs to 8gigs, but not much of a change. Another discussion board advised I switch to Aperture3 due to its ability to manage larger libraries such as mine.
So I've installed A3, and proceded to "import" my iPhoto library. My questions are..
1) I "TimeMachine" my iPhoto lib., therefore I have a ~24gig iphoto "file" on the laptop and backed up to external drive. When I "imported" to A3, A3 created a ~24gig "file" as well. However, when I opened a photo in A3 and do a "locate photos on..or locate file, etc ...it points to the iPhoto lib. What the? Why not point within the A3 "managed file"??
2) In iphoto if I remove red-eye or crop a photo, there is the master untouched photo and the edited version. What gets imported over to A3?
3) Should I have exported iPhoto to reference then imported those reference photos as managed in A3?
ThanksiPhoto is good for 250,000 images. Usual causes for slowness in iPhoto include damaged cache files, HD issues, and even corrupted pref files.

How does Time Machine relate to this question? When you imported the iPhoto Library where did you tell Aperture to store the files?

Both

No, you need to make that choice in the import dialogue

I downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements. I then launched Photoshop Elements Organizer and imported approx. 28,000 photos (including some videos). A window opened indicating that many of the photos had tags, and asking if I wanted to add the tags. I said yes, and the process began. When it reached 60% a window opened indicating that "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working", with the only option being to "Close program."
I've since tried to open organizer several times, but it goes immediately to "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working". I was able to open Editor, and tried opening Organizer from Editor, but encountered the same problem.

I have over 20,000 photos in my iPhoto. When my screen saver comes on it randomly shows certain photos. Often, these photos are old and I in turn find the desire to print said photo. Is there a way the screen saver can convey a photo file name or location as well? Can I create a slideshow of all my photos to cycle through at leisure with photo info? Lastly, I know I have duplicates and have tried numerous software programs to delete duplicates to no avail. What do you recommend as a method to reduce duplicates on iphoto? Thanks for your time.
1. No.
2. Yes.
3. Some apps for dealing with duplicates in iPhoto
iPhoto Library Manager
Duplicate Annihilator
Decliner
iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner
