80 Gb data lost in a blinck of an eye!

Tonight I was working on my iMac, creating gift calendars in iPhoto and picking pictures from Aperture. After I finished, I closed all programs, up to then everything was fine. I moved pictures from Aperture to iPhoto, full size with no problem.
Then I closed all apps, and turned off the screen. Went to the living room, opened my MacBook Pro, turned om the TV and Apple-TV, ready to sync some pictures from my iMac til Apple-TV. But could not find my Aperture lib, the very same one I just worked on 2 minutes earlier. At first I belived it was some network or permission issues, so to be sure, I went back to my iMac again, and, yes, the Aperture libray was gone! 80 Gb of pictures were just gone!! And they were not in the trash, where they should have been if I had deleted them by accident. My Aperture library is not a "library" file, it is a regular folder with lots of subfolders.
I opened Activity Monitor and could actual see that more than 100Gb is gone. I do not know yet what is missing in addition to the pictures.
How can this happen? This really makes me shaky..... And why weren`t my files in the trash?
Any one know what the ...... is going on?

Hopefully, you were guarding against hard drive failure by having a backup (using the built-in Time Machine and an external drive). If so, no matter what caused the data loss, you can restore what was lost very easily, to within one hour of the time of loss.
If the data is actually missing due to some type of data corruption (and you don't have a backup), and it's not a case of the data folder being moved by mistake, the physical space that the data occupied on the drive will still have the data, until new data comes along and overwrites the existing data. You may be able to use a data recovery program to recovery at least a portion of the data.
Tech Tool Pro (Micromat) has a data recovery tool. There are also specialized utilities such as Data Rescue (prosofteng.com). It would be best to use that drive as little as possible, to minimize new data overwriting the space previously occupied by the missing data.

Your only bet is to resotre from the Time Machine backup. However when you do this the sync process will promptly delete the calendars again, so you need to work through the slightly convoluted method detailed in this page:

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

  • Trouble: HD "Data Lost," DiskWarrior stumped, then a "Clean Install"

    Hello Classic Fans,
Since installing OS 9.1 on my 1998 WallStreet PowerBook on 25 April 2005, I enjoyed a PERFECT computer until 3 days ago (16 Feb. 2006) when my Mac started badly acting up.
I'll chart what happened and what I did to correct the problem in the hope it may help others. I would also appreciate feedback telling me if what I did was correct and if there's anything else I should do. Since I'm just now back up and running I'm not sure the problem is gone.
    Sequence of Events:
16 Feb: While surfing in InternetExplorer 5.1.7 the program quit then the display froze. Ran DiskWarrior (5% out) and installed fresh copy of I.E. I had not had a freeze for many moons!
17 Feb: Got "Data Lost" on HD error message twice. Ran DiskWarrior again (5% out).
Backed up recent important "Documents" stuff to CD.
(Note: From past experience I knew that the HD "Data Lost" error means certain trouble).
18 Feb: It's back! Got HD "Data Lost" right away. This time the error box kept flashing and dinging like nuts and wouldn't stop.
    Forced restart.
Flashing "Question Mark" appeared (HD can't recognize its own "System" software!)
Booted to Zip Rescue Disk with DiskWarrior on it.
DiskWarrior can't see HardDrive -- none of my normal desktop icons appear either.
    Shut down with Power Button.
Tried to start/boot to HD ("System" folder) using Power Button.
This time HD recognized its "System" folder and started normally! (How come it could normally boot this time but not last time?)
Restarted to the Boot Rescue Zip. This time DiskWarrior COULD see HD, so I ran DiskWarrior (1% out) on the HD and successfully rebuild Directory.
Almost certain now that something was wrong more than DiskWarrior could fix (I had run DiskWarrior twice in 2 days and the problem was still there and getting worse), I consulted the Apple TroubleShooting guide and decided to do a "Clean Install" of OS 9.1 before I lost EVERYTHING on my HD (that dire event happened before!)
Did "Clean Install" of OS 9.1.
Moved the following folders from the "Previous System" suitcase to the new clean install "System" Suitcase: Control Panels, Extensions, Favorites, Apple Menu Items, Startup Items, and Preferences.
After doing that stuff and a restart, my desktop now looks the same as it did before the Clean Install and my applications, etc. are working like they did before too.
Is the problem fixed? I don't know yet. But from past experience I do know that once the HD "Data Lost" error starts appearing bad stuff starts happening really fast.
Als: Since installing OS 9.1 nearly a year ago, I have never rebuilt the desktop or reblessed anything. Was that a mistake? But this PowerBook just ran PERFECT better than when brand new!
    Until 3 days ago....then BANG!
Did I follow the correct procedure? Any other suggestions for this eight year old PowerBook to keep it alive?
Thanks and I hope this helps others....

I have no expierence using a zip disk. I have always ran DW directly from the CD. Therefore, unknown if it would have made a difference.
The reason why IE froze could have been because it needed more preferred memory. The newer version needs approximately 300%.
If you were looking at a flash type site, those take up a lot of memory & can cause freezes if your browser does not have enough preferred memory.
Then again, you could have had directory damage. 5% is not much. You could have run Disk First Aid directly from your System Install CD that originally came w/your computer. Whatever, DFA can't repair, then that is when you pull out the heavy artillary (DiskWarrior, etc.).
I would just leave sleeping dogs lie for right now if your computer is running smoothly again.
I would also do a monthly maintenance by running DW & Plus Optimizor.
Rebuild your desktop after updating/upgrading an OS, running a 3rd party utility like DW, downloading & installations.
You really need a backup browser. The following is from Microsoft's website:

  • Why the cached data lost from Coherence?

    Yesterday,I sarted a storage-enabledcache server by running cache-server.cmd and started a storage-disabled cache console by running coherence.cmd.
Then I inputed the following commands to input some data into the Coherence caches:
    cache(cb)
    put a a
    put b b
    put c c
    put d d
    put e e
    Map (cb): list
    c = c
    e = e
    a = a
    d = d
b = bBut today, when I issue the list command from the Coherence command line, the output become "null".
    Why the data lost?

By running cache-server.cmd Coherence will be using the configuration file from the coherence.jar which will default to a cache with expiry of one hour. So if you had checked you cache after an hour or so you would have seen it was empty.
If you look at the coherence-cache-config.xml file inside the coherence jar you will see this mapping (which will apply to the cache you created with the name "cb"

  • NTFS data lost when read on Mac OS X Mountain Lion

I am having external disk with NTFS and using Mac OS X Mountain Lion to work with the data inside the disk.
However I encountered problems when working with those data in Mac, somehow the data inside several directories on NTFS disk are lost.
The data lost was not because it was deleted, the data just lost directly when it was opened on the mac.
From the Mac's Finder, it is said that the size of the directories were zero bytes.
When I connected the disk to windows machine after that then it keep showing 0 byte. The data was lost permanently just after I opened it from Mac - the data was there previously before I openned it in Mac, but right now it's gone.
It's happened two times on different NTFS disks, it seems that Mac OS X deleted those files on NTFS disks.
Has anyone here encounterred the same problems like I did?
How to prevent it from deleting NTFS data again?
Is there any way how to recover those lost NTFS data?

  • Data lost when download data after ALV display in background

Hi, everyone, first i display the data in ALV Grid, then I upload the data into sap application sever, it is ok in foreground. But when i run the program at background and the data is more then one page in spool list, the file on application server will lost and only has data in last page of spool list. Is this SAP standard behavior? please advice, thanks.

    There is a simple logic.
First i get all data and keep the data in interal table T_LIST.
Then call function REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY to display data in T_LIST.
Third, Using statement OPEN DATASTET and TRANSFER to upload data in T_LIST into application server.
In fact, it will be ok if run the program foreground. it will also be ok if upload data into appllication server before display data with ALV grid. But i just want to know the root cause why data lost in my current design. thanks.

  • TS3992 My Icloud back up shows huge amount of data stored from back up yet listed as incomplete. Unable to access data. Is data lost

My ICloud backup shows a huge amount of data stored, yet it is listed as incomplete backup. I am unable to access the backed up data. Is the data lost?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Unfortunately, if an iCloud backup is incomplete you can't access any of the data in it.  The only way to access anything in the backup is to restore the entire backup, which can't be done if it is incomplete.

  • NMH - All DATA LOST

Media Hub Reset - All data lost
    Hi,
I have NMH300, Serial No ; BTS26J306488.It was running in RAID Mode (Disk Mirror) with two 1TB Hard Disks.
The firmware was up to date. And I had enabled various services on it, like Windows Shares, FTP etc.I had also renamed the hub to "MYCLOUD"
Then one day last week when I tried to find the mediahub "MYCLOUD" on my network shares list it was no longer visible.
The status of Lights on the hub was Both disks "Blue" in colour.
Then after trying to investigate, I realised that the device has rested to its default state and all my configurations are gone. The name is also reset to "MEDIAHUB"
Then in the configuration sections, I went to "DISK" settings.
There I see that Slot B is empty.
So what I interpret from this is that one of my disks might have crashed.
But the sd part is it also says "RAID MODE" Linear1
HELP : Can linksys help me get my data back.
I feel so betrayed by the promise of a reliable NAS device by Cisco.
How can CISCO design products that are not properly tested before launching in the market.I havd approx 800 GB of data that seems to have just vanished.

    Hi there,
It is sad that things like this happen. I haven't encountered any major issues with my mediahub for the past 2 years. Now, the only way that it will revert back to single disk mode is when someone would actually set it via configuration page. Now, since your two 1TB drives were set originally to RAID1, try to take out the 2nd HD (Slot 2) from the Mediahub and check if your files are still there. You can also try to take out the HD from slot 1 and replace it  with the HD from slot 2 leaving just 1 HD at a time. You may do a hard reset on the mediahub as well. Doing a reset would change your disk configuration. It will only change the basic settings (mediahub's friendly name, FTP name). So just give it a shot and post some updates.
Hope this could help. I am not sure if Cisco has data recovery facility. If your HD is within manufacturer warranty, then you may try to have it recovered on their end.
    Cheers!
