Well if it works at work, but not at home then the iPod is fine but something is wrong with your setup at home, could be USB hardware/firmware/drivers, USB drivers for other devices (I have a multi-fuction printer with a memory-card reader which interfers with all other USB drive connections when turned on) or the iTunes installation. You could try system restore going back to the last time it still worked properly which might help if it's a driver issue. Your best bet might be a clean install of Windows. Since that generaly takes time to organise & you should backup your data first I'd suggest you buy a nice big external hard drive, backup up all your data on to it, including your iTunes library & music, take it to work, and sync your iPod from there until you get around to cleaning up your machine at home.

  • No Driver Found/iPod is an Unknown Device

    Hi,
I recently installed the updated Apple software and ever since, I haven't been able to sync up my ipod to my computer. The ipod can be charged, but it isn't found on Windows or itunes. I've tried everything from the Apple Website to fix the problem except completely wiping out everything on my ipod. I've deleted itunes 7.0 and reinstalled itunes 6.0, I've plugged it into different working usb ports and I've checked for viruses on my PC. Still no luck. I've never had this problem before on my 5th Gen ipod and was wondering how I can find the driver to fix my problem.
    Thank you for your help,

    Hi @LynnFlores ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. Thank you so much for all the steps you have taken to resolve. Very helpful. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14-b164tu Sleekbook and issues with the Touchscreen after an update with Windows 8.1. Here is a document on how to troubleshoot this Touchscreen with Windows 8.1.
Please start  at the top and work your way down. As they do seem silly but we need to know if something does not finish correctly.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Listed on the page shows you about a Touchscreen driver that is available. If you go into the Device manager and look under Human Interface Devices. Do you see the driver listed there?
If no, do you see something listed under other devices?
If touch functionality still does not appear to be working correctly, follow the steps listed in the document to calibrate the screen.
    I hope something here helps.
    Thanks.

  • Can't delete songs & ipod appears twice under "devices" in itunes

I have two problems that started at the same time and are probably related. [Note - The problems described here occur on two different machines with this particular ipod (mine) & does not with my other one (my wife's).]
    Problem #1
I can not delete anyting from my ipod. If I try to delete anything from my ipod, itunes immediately shuts down and the songs remain on the ipod. No error message, warning, or anything. This problem started the happening at the same time as problem #2.
    Problem #2
My ipod shows up twice under Devices in itunes. [See a screenshot at: http://home.nyc.rr.com/mindybrian/itunes.JPG. ] Again, I don't know what caused this to happen.
Since this doesn't happen to my other ipod and occurs on all computers I connect this ipod too, it must be the ipod. Does anyone have any advice? I don't want to wipe the whole thing clean and start from scratch. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

iPhone 4S and Windows XP the first thing that jumps to mind is that the iPhone 4S needs a USB 2.0 connection to sync with iTunes. Check your computers user guide to see if the PC has a compatable USB 2.0 input.

  • Unknown Device!!!!  HELP!!!!

I already have the software installed, and I know that my usb ports work because i've used them in the past with other hardware. I just bought my ipod today, and when I plug it in a little symble thats the same as the one beside of the usb port pops up, when clicke on, it says unknown device. I can't even access it so much as to format it. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have wasted this money. And I'm on a PC btw.

I've got the same problem... I'll list all the details..
I have an iPod Photo 30 gig.. worked fine on my old computer, plugged it in and it was great, not a problem in the world.
I then put together a new PC, 3.0Ghz P4... and installed windows and put it all together again. I restored my database from my old iTunes library. When I connected the iPod it worked... and began tranferring and updating.. but then it crashed.. and it mentioned something to do with an I/O error and that the iPod had to be disconnected, and it also mentioned something to do with a timeout error.
Suddenly, half the music on my iPod wouldn't play, it skipped skipped skipped... really annoying. I tried to format the iPod using the iPod software... buuut it told me that it wasn’t an iPod that was connected. (Funny that... lol)
After working away at the problem I decided to format and try the iPod again... still no luck, and its really getting to me.
What happens now... is, you connect it, it says “Found new hardware”... “Apple iPod...” ... “Disk Drive...” ... then iTunes loads... then iTunes freezes... then the iPod disconnects 2 mins later, then iTunes unfreezes. Now it says the iPod is an unknown device, and that it has “Malfunctioned”.
This is really annoying me. I’ve tried to download updates from Microsoft, but I can’t. Theres an error in the validate thingo, I’ll have to call them sometime, but that’s irrelevant. Does anyone know a fix? Or... someone mentioned the firewire works... I have a firewire card... where can I buy the Firefire cable from? And... how can I contact apple for help, if I need to?
Annoying though, because the USB method worked like a charm before this. BTW this iPod still connects perfectly on other pcs... but it doesn’t have the music library I want lol...
Sorry for the long post, but I figure the more detail the better. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a heap!

  • "Unknown Device" appears when ipod is "connected"

So I just bought an ipod yesterday. I took it out of the box and i followed the instructions and hooked it into my usb port on my computer not keyboard. The ipod did not connect and my computer did not even register that anything is hooked in that port. I'm finally able to get it to register about once every 20 times, and when it does it says unknown device and that there are no drivers for it. A message also appears saying a device has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized. The ipod is not charged as it doesnt connect to my pc so i cant even turn it on to follow the 5 r's. What should i do?

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to update automatically. If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage music and videos" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing content manually on iPod
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • IPod appearing in Device Manager as unknown device

Hi, I'm currently using an iPod Nano 4th Gen. and it is appearing in Device Manager as an unknown device. I found this out after the error message "USB device not recognised" or something, and followed instructions. I'm currently clueless on what to do. My OS is Windows 8. When I go into properties of the unknown device (iPod) the device status is: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). And in details, I get: USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
If you need any more information to help me, please do not hesitate to request it. I just really would like this issue to be solved. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the update, passionflower
I think next would be a good idea to shutdown the computer, and disconnect everything from it. Let it sit for a minute or two, then plug it all back up and turn the computer on, then try again.
Next I would start troubleshooting the USB ports on the computer. I would start with this troubleshooting.
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    Double-click the System icon.
    Click the Hardware tab.
    Click Device Manager.
Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
Click the plus icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    Click the Power Management tab.
Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    Restart the computer.
From: iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB
              http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1401
    And then this troubleshooting
Plug the device directly into a high-power USB 2.0 port on the computer. If possible, use a USB port on the back of the computer.
Avoid plugging the device into a keyboard, display, or standalone hub. The USB ports on these accessories may be low-power or only offer USB 1.x connections.
If you are using an accessory, remove the accessory and connect the device to the computer using only the Apple 30-pin to USB Cable or Lightning to USB Cable.
If you have access to additional Apple 30-pin to USB Cable or Lightning to USB Cables, try testing with another if the first one doesn't work.
Restart your computer and device. To restart your device:
Hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the Sleep/Wake button to turn it back on.
Disconnect all USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then reconnect the iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect other USB devices, testing after each connection.
    From: iOS: Troubleshooting USB connection
              http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1286
If you have another computer you can also test the iPod Nano there to help isolate whether the issue is with the iPod or the computer.
And just in case the issue is still not resolved, I want to thank you for using the Apple Support Community. Due to the nature of your issue you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://expresslane.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.
    All the very best,

  • I found my brother's old 1st generation iPod. An unknown error 1442 keeps appearing every time I try to restore the iPod.

I found my brother's old 1st generation iPod. An unknown error 1442 keeps appearing every time I try to restore the iPod.

Error 23, 28, 29: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Also attempt to restore while connected with the white USB Dock Connector cable that shipped with your device, on a known good computer and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value, (00 499901 064000 0), can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software can also cause these errors.

  • Ipod nano "unknown device"

I have just bought an ipod nano 4.0GB, and my computer doesn't recognize it, it says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windowns does not recognize it."..In my device manager it shows as "unknown device", and no driver is installed...for what I've been researching, it seems to be happening a lot with Dell computers... I tried everything Apple support site says, and still no change, I even tried what other postings say, like reseting the ipod pressing the center whell and menu button...or even turning it to disk mode, I get the message, OK to disconnect...
    Can anyone help?
    Appreciate it

This is a comman error with many Windows XP Users. I myself had encountered it but fixed it with ease . You have to Reset your ipod and Get the Latest Ipod UPDater Software.
    To Reset your IPOD_
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
After that Plug it in to the computer with the LATEST IPOD UPdATER SOFTWAre from this site.

  • I have an ipod, ipad, and iphone. ilike to use imessage on all of them but i dont want messages to appear on the devices i am not currently using. nor do i want to have to keep a saparate account or id for eCH OF THEM. WHAT IS THE FIX?

i have an ipod, ipad, and iphone. ilike to use imessage on all of them but i dont want messages to appear on the devices i am not currently using. nor do i want to have to keep a saparate account / id for each device  how do i fix the settings on each so that with the same ID / login I can chech me emails, share contacts etc, be able to use i messenger on each without the whole conversation automatically beiing picked up by my other devices? some conversations just arent intended to be shared!

Turn it into the local police department with an explanation as to who you tried to contact and what they told you. That's the only safe procedure, as otherwise the owner could report the iPod as stolen, even though you tried to return it, and get you into trouble.
    Regards.
