80 GB - One Tough iPod!

Bought the new 80 GB iPod on Sunday; on Monday, while on a late-night walk with the iPod, I got mugged. Ended up dropping the iPod onto hard concrete, and after the guys ran away (with my almost-empty wallet, but leaving the day-old $350 iPod) I figured the iPod was toast.
Nope. The headphone jack was busted, snapped clean off, but the iPod itself was perfectly fine--in fact it kept playing through the whole adventure. It probably helped that I had the lock on when the robbery started, but still, I have to say I'm impressed. Now I just have to see if my credit card's purchase protection will get me replacement headphones.
A word of warning to fellow iPoders, though: turns out that walking around empty streets late at night with a bright white iPod in your hand might just raise your profile as a potential victim. I walk these streets all the time; the first time I took the iPod along, this happened. Lesson learned.

I think it all has to do with how you're perceived when you're out there: as I said, I do late-night walks all the time, and I have good street awareness, plus I'm tall. But my guess is that having the iPod changed me from a tall guy with his eyes open to some shlub strolling around listening to music and not really paying attention to what's going on. The cops think that my muggers drove by, spotted me for an easy mark ("crime of opportunity"), parked and then surprised me coming around a corner.
It's a shame that I find myself urging people to give up something they enjoy, and clearly you enjoy walking at night with the iPod playing. But city life does require a few adjustments, I guess, and although I'm not about to stop my walks, I must reluctantly admit that the iPod will no longer be a part of them.
Anyway. Hope all this helps.

  • Sync with only one iTune/iPod account and have EVERYTHING EARSED

I've up dated to 7.11 and when I plug my iPod 40G photo in, I get message that you can only have one iTune/iPod per computer account...trouble is that THIS IS THE COMPUTER I started my iPod with!! Now it wants to sync and earse all my songs but better yet 8,000 songs are missing in the library!!
I also have 3 other iPods and none will be allowed in the library!
    HELP!!!!

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Once you are safely connected if you can't reinstate your library from your computer then there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Will one day "ipod with dock connector" be able to be charged by USB cable?

    Hi,
this question has just popped into my mind
a moment ago. it might be very useful if
one day they'll grant us to be able to do that.
but if this request seemed to be too far
from hardware capability, i'd stop thinking
    about it.
could anyone give me a clue? any support teams?
    Thanks,
p/s hope i'd called my ipod right, it's the
one with four buttons outside the wheel, and
it is not a clickwheel one. "ipod with dock
connector" right? :] thank you again

    Hi Kenekeu
I just wanted to chime in and bump this thread. Although I've posted here several times about this exact problem, with no solution found yet, and no response from Apple. I tried rebooting into windows (via bootcamp) and reformatting my ipod from there. However when I downloaded the older version of the ipod updater, i was told that it was expired and a newer version was available (sigh). So I now have a windows formatted ipod that still won't connect via firewire.
I am still able to mount and transfer songs via USB in mac OSX. Luckily I had one of those dual usb/firewire cables, which plugs into the plug charger via firewire, and into the computer via USB at the same time, so my ipod doesn't lose charge.
Hopefully there'll be a fix soon, because this is really frustrating. I've had this ipod for a couple years, and was always proud that it lasted this long... and now this.

  • Canadians loading videos/movies onto one's ipod

...does anyone know if one can yet purchase movies (or any videos for that matter) onto itunes and then onto one's ipod video? ....oh, ....and how does one load DVD's of movies onto itunes and then onto the ipod? .....

    Here's a step by step.
    1) Install Instant Handbrake from http://download.m0k.org/handbrake/testing/Instant-HandBrake-20060421.dmg.
    2) Insert your DVD you want to rip.
    3) Open Instant Handbrake
    4) Select the settings you want. An example can be found here: http://download.m0k.org/handbrake/images/HandBrake-2006042100.jpg. I would recommend turning subtitles off for iPod viewing.
    5) Select the title that contains the movie. It is usually the one with the longest run time. Just put a check mark in the box.
    6) Click convert and wait! Conversion takes no less than the run time of the DVD. (60 minute movie = 60 minutes to convert, but could be faster).
    7) After conversion is complete, quit Instant Handbrake.
    8) Open iTunes. Go to File -> Import and navigate to your movies folder. There you will find a file named with the DVD name, file format, title number, etc. Click import. If you have iTunes set to automatically copy files to the iTunes music folder (you can check under the advanced tab of preferences), you can safely delete the original file from your Movies folder.
    9) Plug in your iPod and sync!
I hope this helps. Is it worth it? If you want to watch movies on your iPod, then yes!

  • Tough One:  3 iPods, Two i-Tunes Accounts, and one machine

My wife and I have three iPods between us (60GB and 2 Nanos). At present, each is tied to three seperate machines (all running Windows XP).
We would very much like to build a new machine (Windows XP) and have it serve as our repository for all of our tunes. We'd also like to be able to use all three iPods with this one machine.
Have NO clue as to the best way to transfer the music (though I suspect from each iPod to the one machine is probably best) and how we might manage the tunes between devices (profiles?) once we get everything in one place. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi, InfoSec.
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base for the main options for transferring your music from one computer to another.
You may also find Hudgie's User Tip of interest.
Once the music is transferred, this Knowledge Base article explains how to use multiple iPods on a single computer.

  • Seem to have multiple apple ids one on computer one on iPod cannot use iTunes because password for old id not recognized cannot update user name for ipod

cannot update username on ipod for itunes
why are they all different. Why don't I have just one id?
    I cannot update apps.
    password for username not recognized
I want one apple id for everything
    one password for everything
I cannot retrieve or reset anything for itunes to update apps

It appears that you have apps on the iPod that wer purchased with more than one iTunes account.  If one from more than one iTunes account need updating, you need to update them one at a time (not update all) until all the remianing apps were purchased from one account.  You may need to change the accont the iPId is signed into by go to Settings>Store and signing out and in.
    Accounts can't be merged.

  • How do i transfer notes from one dead ipod to another

i have an old, old ipod with notes i'd like to get back from. my problem is that it died a long time ago, and the charging bit in the ipod broke, so i can no longer access it. i recently got a new ipod, and i'd like to get the notes onto my new one.

    - Restore the new iPod from a backup pf the old iPod.
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Get the old iPod fixed by a third-party repair place and then backup the old iPod and restore the new iPod from that backup
    - Try going to a data recovery company

  • Can I use to Apple IDs to one device (iPod touch)?

    Hi,
I have just bought a new iPod touch and cannot decide how to use it with iTunes. This is the situation. I have iTunes installed on my lap top and one Apple ID registered for my iPod shuffle. My wife has an iPad and an iPhone and she usually sync it with our home PC (where we have more music). She has her own Apple ID which she uses to purchase apps etc. Now, my question is how I can switch between the different computers. If I connect my new iPod touch to my Apple ID and download music from my lap top, can I also connect mu iPod touch to our home computer and download music and apps also from there?

iDevices only sync with one computer... any attempts to sync with a  different computer will result in the media already on the device being wiped and replaced with media from the new computer.
This has nothing to do with how many Apple ID's are associated with the device.  It is possible to use multiple Apple ID's on a single device for syncing different media and apps.

  • How to sync up more than one iphone/ipod to a PC

I'm frustrated because i've run into a problem and its really cumbersome to fix.
i have several ipods and me and my girl both have iphones (5 ipods and 2 iphones).
    we have one PC.
when i sync up my ipod, i can xfer music and videos to it w/o problems but if i connect her ipod it wont allow me to xfer music to it. i can dock it and see it but simply gives me the black cirle with a slash thru it, denies me adding playlists to it.
same with iphone. i literally need 1 PC per ipod/iphone in order to sync up the music and movies we want on them.
how does one copy over their music onto various ipods if you only have one PC. all our music is stored ont he PC. to fix i would need to create a virtual OS, then copy over all my music onto it to sync up but i find it hard to believe that apple did not think of this?
the expected result while using itunes...is to be able to sync up any ipod or iphone to itunes, and be able to copy over any playlist or movie.
i have bought all my dvds and cds and ripped them, whay am i not allowed to place them on more than one ipod or iphone?

thanks for those tips. i looked at those links. they are helpful but i dont need to create user profiles nor link to other music libraries.
why it fails...when i dock a 2nd iphone it sees data on it....the expected or desired result is, it just leaves data there but allows me to add more. this is the part i cant get past.
i did try making a new user account and multiple libraries, but still same problem.
my ultimate desire is to be able to connect more than one iphone to same PC and xfer data to it and also take the iphone to another PC. so the idea is to move my iphone from work and home and have it sync up with data thats on each one.
the auto sync and auto start when i dock iphone is disabled.
but when i sync up it somehow senses this iphone docks at another PC and does not recognize the media on it as being on this PC.
i deally i dont want to clutter each PC with the same data. i'd like to just keep the music and movies on the iphone and merely add from different PCs. meaning if i dock it at work, it wont have the same music or movies on it. basically i dont want to add redudant files to it that are already on my home PC, i just wish to add music from my work pc to it.
sometimes my wife comes to my workplace and notices i ripped a new album, she wants to dock her iphone and xfer it over, but itunes wont allow it, popping up a message saying she has to wipe it in order to sync up with.
i'm not sure why the ipods wont allow me to sync up music, it sees the device and shows playlists but if i try to add a playlist i get a little black icon stating its denied. i'm not worried about ipd right now. its the iphone i'm trying to figure out, how to get past this problem.
originally it started with one PC to do everything but since we could not we decided to start using our work computers. and now that we sync up to them we cant freely sync up to home PCs now, hence the frustration.
i'm trying to figure out how to use iphones between multiple PCs, single PC. it all seems so complicated yet all we want to do is simply dock, and xfer over data (all PCs are disable auto sync), we jsut want to specifically sync up only particular playlists, movies, wallpapers.
for contacts we gave up on outlook as we get some itunes outlook error about a service failing so we do it via yahoo.
we export out outlook contacts to yahoo and simply use yahoo to merge contacts.

  • 2 computers one recognizes IPOD other doesn't! HELP!

I need some help with my Ipod. My Ipod does not connect to my home computer (it did one time, but no more) But, it does connect to my computer at work. All my songs are loaded on the computer at work in itunes but I don't have any more space there and i need to use my computer at home.
I have tried to reset my ipod, but it still is not recognized when i connect it at home. the only thing it does when the USB is connected at home, is it turns the ipod on, but it is not recognized in itunes. What can I do? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  • Is it possible to have 2 iTunes Libraries, one for ATV and one for Ipod?

Now realizing that I need two different fomats for my movies in ATV vs. the Ipod, and not liking the fact that now when I stream I have two of every movie showing, I am wondering if there is a way around this.
Is there a way to set up two separate iTunes libraries on the same computer so that you have one for ATV and one for the Ipod. Then you could goto the movies file in the first iTunes library (as well as whatever music) and pull all of the Ipod formatted movies out and put them in the second library for syncing with the Ipod. Is this doable or do you need separate computers? What about having the libraries on separate drives and then picking which library you wanted to use when you opened iTunes?

Yes, you can have two libraries, and there's a shareware program called Libra for easy switching between them. You should keep the Library file(s) local on your computer, but you can have the actual media files anywhere.
The only downside to having several libraries is if you have stuff that you want in both of them (like your music for example) you have to manually add it to both of them.
The Alternative would be to sync only playlists of movies - if iTunes would allow movie playlists. A workaround is to label the movies as two tv series (like "iPod" and "ATV") and have each synced to the respective device.

  • Music only plays in one ear, ipod nano 5th generation

My ipod nano 5th gen had been acting up since january, the sound would be popping on and off in one ear but the other would be fine. I thought it was the earphones so I kept buying new ones, but still it didn't change much, so then around march, it finally just stop playing in one ear. I'm pretty sure that there's a problem with my headphone jack, and I can see that inside, you know the two bumps, the top one is kind of inside my ipod. I don't really know what to do! Help me, please!

You will have to replace the headphone jack in the iPod.

  • Am I the only one whose ipod touch screen is no longer "oleophobic?"

Hello, my first post on the forum, and I have this yet unsolved problem.
I own an ipod touch 3rd gen, purchased in February, the iPad, and the iPhone 4.
Initially the surface on the ipod was really nice and very few smudges occurred. I, not knowing better, cleaned it with various cleaning solutions that are used for reading glasses. Afterward I used a "protecting screen"
Eventually, when the protective screen became annoying I removed it and noticed that the screen is not good anymore. Its clean when you clean it, but it accumulates smudges or fingerprints very quick. This is not even remotely an issue with ipad and iphone touch. and I have not used and will not use cleaning solutions on the ipad or iphone. Whatever the surface is coated with makes it so that there are almost no smudges or prints.
I think this could also be caused by applying the "protective" screens. So be warned and dont rush to "protect" your brand new phone or ipod. You dont want to damage the screen.
So I wonder if anyone else is having this issue? and do you know whether apple can fix this?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.
