80 gig iPod classic pauses songs randomly

So, I recently ran into a(n) annoying problem I had hooked up a aux cord to the ipod and when "locked" the ipod pauses randomly, knowing that it might be a connection problem I plugged my Bose earphones and it randomly pauses also. Any ideas?

When you are listening to your iPod it reads data into working memory and then shuts down the hard drive when the buffer is full and plays back from memory. Before the buffer is completely empty the drive starts up again to read in some more data. There's a trade off to be made in this algorithm between battery life and occasionaly running out of data and it's possible that the classic firmware leans too much towards battery life. It's probably fine on a moderatly used disc, which isn't fragmented and where every sector reads on the first attempt. As the drive gets older some sectors may need two or three passes to get a good read. If one of these sectors is called at the beginning of a read cycle then the buffer may run out of data before a successful read leading to a pause. If the same track will play again without interuption then it's proably nothing too much to worry about but if a particular track rountinely causes problems that's of more concern.
If you want to investiage the health of your iPod's hard drive read on....
*Diagnostics Mode*
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
Retracts: 889
Reallocs: 12
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 2202
Start/Stops: 894
Temp: Current 24c
Temp: Min 10c
Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
*Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
*Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • After restoring 120 Gig Ipod classic, Keep getting random Sync errors?

So, I was using a third party software called Media Monkey to tag some album art on my ipod. For whatever reason my the program kept closing out and crashing. Eventually it crashed so hard that it wiped my entire library of music. After some failed attempts to save my music by taking it off of the hidden ipod_Control folder, I gave up and restored it. After the restore, whenever I attempt to add music I keep getting random numbered sync errors (for example -50, -1303.-69,-53). This is only after I add about 3 or 4 gigs of space. (I tired re adding the music album by album and still have the same issue after only 2 gigs of space.) I  have NEVER had a problem with this ipod before, it's not even 4 months old yet so i'm not sure what is going on here. I have called apple three times (all i'm told is if I want actually help and not articles that i've already used, I have to pay.) I have tired making it a disk drive but itunes still treats my ipod like it's an ipod and not a disk drive. Any help would be REALLY nice. Thank you for reading! I've also restore my ipod multiple times as well.

Hopefully it is only a filesystem corrupted by conflicting Apps.
Try to fix the iPod filesystem, using  Properties->Tools->error checking.
    Then Restore the iPod.
if then doesn't work, do the iPod Disk Diagnostics, as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem , but helps in troubleshooting.
    Good Luck!

    Update!
This is what I did to fix both the skipping songs problem and the iPod verifying forever & not able to restore problem (because of iTunes 9):
    a) I used Disk Utility to reformat my iPod while in Disk Mode using the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
    and here:
    http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml#backup
    b) Do not unplug your iPod after reformatting (mine showed up as a firewire disk) - simply launch iTunes ( I went back to 8.2) and follow the Restore instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
iPod is recognized, syncs and doesn't skip songs anymore after that miserable experience with iTunes 9!!!

  • My ipod classic pauses and unpauses spontaneously.

My ipod classic pauses for one or two seconds and then begins playing again. This is extremely annoying and shouldn't happen with a $400.00 mp3 player. I listen to my ipod all day while at work. My ipod does this about 30 times throughout each day. Anybody know how to fix this?

Try the 5R's here >  Apple - Support - iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant
Hopefully just a reset will help.

  • Using a 80 gig iPod Classic with a Phillips DCP750 Portable DVD Player

This weekend I almost purchased the Phillips DCP750 portable DVD player, but after reading some of the discussions posted here, I am doubtful it will work with the 80 gig iPod Classic I bought last month. Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work or if there is another portable DVD player that will work with my iPod? If I purchase a universal dock from Apple, will this let me change the settings on the iPod so it will work? And which cables would I purchase to connect my iPod to a TV? I am somewhat disappointed that it is apparently so difficult to hook the 80 gig Classic up to a bigger screen to watch downloaded movies, TV shows, video, etc. I might have settled for the smaller Nano if I had know this would be such a hassle.
I would appreciate any information anyone can give me on this.

    1. How likely is it that Apple will fix this issue with future firmware releases?
No-one here could even hazard a guess. We're just users like yourself. Do Philips claim this DVD player is compatible? Isn't it the responsibility of the makers of the DVD player to ensure it works with the Classic?
    2. Are other 3rd party devices (i.e. Docks, Automobiles, etc.) affected by this firmware release?
Yes. Almost all older 3rd party accessories don't work with the Classic. There have been many posts about such issues both here and other iPod forums.
    3. Is there any way to go back to firmware release 1.0.2? I know backing off firmware releases is possible with the iPhone.
This may be of help but you have to have the previous version still on your computer.
Remove the latest update from the iTunes/iPod updates folder.
In Windows XP but I think it's found in "Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates."
Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically), then click restore. Or simply disconnect your modem from the computer.
    Then restore the iPod.
You should then be asked if you want to use the previous version of the iPod software.

  • IPod Classic pauses

I have 2 iPod Classics (160gb), one I keep at work and the other I use on the run.  Both devices start pausing on the same playlist and the same song, the back light illuminates, and I have to unpause manually.  As the music continues to play the iPod will continue to pause.  The longer I play, the more it pauses.  When I play the same playlist in my  iTunes, there is no pause.  I have tried re-syncing both iPods but the pausing continues.  Can anyone help?

If this is always just one song, then I would suspect the song. Where did you get the song?

  • 6G 80GB iPod Classic stops at random

    Greetings -
In the past month, my 3-year-old iPod Classic (6G, 80GB) has stopped playing at random.
It's in my pocket, I'm listening to a tune, and the player just stops. I click the Play button, and it resumes. It may stop again in a few seconds, or it may play a song or three. And then it'll stop again.
No rhyme or reason that I can detect.
This happens regardless of whether the Hold button is engaged, and I've verified that the hold button still works. And it happens whether the player is fully charged or running low.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks -- makes complete sense.
I can't begin to describe the abuse that the jack has taken over the past three years.
Well ... $250 over 3 years ... works out to under a quarter a day.
    Not too bad.
At least, for now, it still makes a useful music source plugged into the iPod dock in my receiver.
But for commuting, I have a Cowon iAudio on the way. It might have been an iPod nano, but the redesign made it impossible to use in the pocket -- too small & no tactile feedback. Progress? -- I think not.

  • IPod is pausing at random

hi. my iPod, a 4g 20 Gig iPod, pauses at random, without me hitting any buttons. I use Philips noise-cancelling headphones, not the original iPod headphones. I have seen different things on other posts, and I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is and what to do about it. It's incredibly annoying and any help would be appreciated.

Try putting a piece of Scotch tape or a coat of clear nail polish over the headphone jack.
The 4th gen. iPod is programmed to automatically pause if the headphones are removed. 3rd party headphones have metal connections which, when moved, trick the iPod into thinking the headphones have been pulled out.

  • Connect to car, IPOD Classic pauses and will not play

    Hello to all,
First of all I am not very good at computer stuff. I used my IPOD Classic for about three months with a car kit and all was fine. All of a sudden it stopped playing. I figured out that the IPOD pauses when it is connected to the wire from the car. I have tried connecting it with the car off, on, radio off, on all with the same result, as soon as the IPOD detects the wire it pauses. My radio will only play the IPOD not control it. Any ideas?? This is driving me mad. I don't understand why it worked for months and then suddenly stopped. Thanks in advance for any help.
    Matt

I'm having the same problem. I updated my ipod in itunes and now my car's usb deck will not recognize the ipod. It had been working for years without a problem. I emailed kenwood and they said apple pushed out an update that is causing compatibility issues with car decks. They suggested a "soft reset" which did nothing. Kenwood told me to contact Apple and Apple wants me to pay for support. Guess I'll surf around this forum till I find a way to revert back to an older version of the ipod software.
    Here's the thread from kenwood:
    Dear Mr. Lapteff,
Thank you for contacting Kenwood USA Corporation. We value you as a Kenwood customer and appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance.
I understand you are having an issue with playing back your Ipod. If you recently updated your Ipod to the newer iOS4 software version we recommend attempting to soft reset the Ipod and attempt reconnecting to your head unit. The available updates from Apple have caused some issues with connectivity. For information on resetting your Ipod we recommend visiting www.apple.com.
Please feel free to contact us again with any additional questions.

  • 160 gig iPod Classic best Bitrate

I just bought an ipod classic 160gig and I want to rip music from my cd collection or convert some mp3 so I can sync them to my ipod.
Can you please let me know what is the best format *.mp3, acc...etc and what is the best bitrate?
    Thank you.

    I just found this:
"AAC files are generally higher quality and slightly smaller than MP3 files of the same song. The reasons for this are fairly technical (more about the specifications of the AAC format can be found at Wikipedia), but the overview of the reasoning is that AAC was created after MP3 and it offers a more efficient compression scheme, with less quality loss, than MP3s."

  • IPod Classic Skipping Songs?

Ever since yesterday my iPod Classic has been skipping songs when I press the next button. I browse songs by artist, and when I choose the first song in an album instead of saying like '1 of 6' it'll say '4 of 6' and then it'll just go through the songs arbitrarily. :/
I also can't locate the voice recorder feature either. I treat my iPod Classic as if it were my child, this recent malfunction has really gotten me shaken.

Forgot to mention, I've already tried hard resetting, didn't do anything.

  • I downloaded an album from itunes and on my ipod classic two songs will skip after 20 seconds of playing.

    Hi,
I downloaded an album from itunes and two songs on my ipod classic will skip after 20 seconds of playing. They play fine on my iphone but for some reason they will not play on my ipod. Any suggestions please?
    Thanks!

Sounds like they got damaged on the way to the iPod - remove them and put them back on
