800 firewire port

I'm not in the market for a new iMac right now, but I have a question. I know that the new Intel iMacs come with one 800 firewire port and I think 3 USB ports. I daisy chain my external hard drives to the 800 port on my late 2008 iMac so I can leave the 400 port available for my Sony video camcorder. If and when I buy an iMac with only one port, the 800 one, will I be forced to hook the video camcorder to a 400 port on an external and import footage that way? I know Canon cameras have a problem with this workaround, but will I have problems with my Sony?

Thanks for the replies. I know there is a 6 pin to 9 pin cable because I have one. It's just that if there's only one firewire port, it's a pain in the butt to unhook all of my externals and then plug in the videocamera. Then I run into the problem of having to transfer all of the data from the internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I posted this same question in the iMac forum and it was suggested that I get a hub. I'm just curious though, if I daisy chain the externals into the hub, along with the video camera, will that slow things down?

No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

800 FIREWIRE PORT HUB

I need a hub that I can use to connect both my video camera & my external hard drive at the same time, so I can save my raw video directly to my
external hard drive from iMovie on my new 27" iMac. I have a cable that fits the 800 port for my Canon GL1 camcorder. Can someone suggest
a hub I can purchase that will accommodate two FireWire connectors and fit my computer port or/and do I need some adapter also?
I am still learning the lingo so I hope I asked this correctly.

I have a Mac cumputer and I want to transfer video from a full HD camcorder , I want to use HDMI for best quality picture, The problem is ,,,I have a Firewire 800 port on my mac,No Tunderbolt port.Is there a way to connect a HDMI cable to that port?

If all you are doing is transferring the video from the camera to the computer you don't need a HDMI cable to do that, you need data transfer period. You will not lose any video quality using FW800. HDMI output quality would ONLY be used from the computer to a TV or projector. I think you may misunderstand how HDMI is used and may need to look more into what it's about. Look on your camcorder, it probably has only a FW400 port. If I am correct about the camcorder only have FW400 then you only need a cable similar to this one from Amazon.

MAC G5 2004 are the 400 and 800 firewire busses interconnected?

When I plug in a DV camera to the 400 firewire buss and go to system profile/firewire, the DV camera doesn't show up.....but, when I turn the firewire hard drives off (pull their power) thus disconnecting them from the 800 firewire buss, the DV camera shows up....
If I have my firewire external drives connected to the 800 firewire port, and the DV camera connected to the 400 firewire port sometimes (not often) the the dv camera works, most of the time it doesn't..... help!
The only way I can get the dv camera to work is to disconnect the firewire hard drives from the computer then all is good in the land of "MAC).....

The external hard drives have their own power.....turns out that the 400 and 800 firewire busses are the same.....What Apple did was an 800 firewire buss and has 1 port located on the rear of the tower and 2 400 ports (one one the front and one on the back). The 2 400 ports are equal to the 1 800 port, so when you use one 400 port and 1 800 port the 800 port becomes another 400 port. In other words.....I only have 1, 800 buss and not an 800 buss and 2 400 busses....pretty tacky if you ask me......also, I learned that the Canon DV cameras (ZR70MC) is a real hog when it comes to firewire, so, when I have my external hard drives plugged into the 800 buss and the Canon plugged into the 400 buss, it's on overload and their is no buss protocal for who uses what. Which means if the external drives are using the buss the Canon is out of luck......The solution is to install a separate firewire card and plug either the Canon or the drives into it thus freeing up the internal 800 buss for other uses.
The workaround is for me to unplug the power to the external hard drives, plug in the Canon, capture all of my material onto the internal drive, once I've captured all of my files, remove the Canon from the buss, powerup and re-mount the external drives, then, move all of my captured files over to my work space which is located on one of the external drives......what a pain in the butt......but that's the way it works.....

Firewire 800 & 400 ports

I have an iMac 24" which has two Firewire ports in the rear (and 800 & a 400).
I have an external LaCie 250gb drive connected to the 400 port. I also have a Panasonic miniDV camera which successfully connects via this port, however at the expense of unplugging the LaCie.
I wish to use both at the smae time via FCE.
Wikipedia seems to suggest that the 800 format is backwards compatible with 400.
So my question is, will my LaCie drive & Panasonic camcorder operate through the 800 port using the correct cable (assuming these come with the 4 pin end for the camcorder).

Ian is correct.
I have a MBP w/1 FW 400 port and 1 FW 800 port, and I use a 400->800 converter.
I think the converter was my first purchase after I got the MBP. I couldn't find info at the time if there was any advantage to use the camera or HD with either port, so I figured a converter would give me max flexibility to check it out for myself.
My experience now is that it doesn't make any difference. That matches what I've read that if two or more FW devices plugged into the Mac, the data flows at the speed of the slowest device; it doesn't make any difference which port it's connected to.
To do it again, I would just buy a cable with the 800 plug on one end, and a 400 plug (either 4-pin or 6-pin) on the other end. Reason is the converter is just one more thing to keep track of, and, because it's about 1.5 inches long, I think it puts a bit more strain on the Mac's 800 port.

Hi, freestoner, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your FireWire ports can't be upgraded, so check with the manufacturer of the drive as to its compatibility with FireWire 400 ports, or else buy a FireWire 800 CardBus adapter.
If you need to buy a CardBus adapter for the drive, make sure that either the drive or the adapter card has its own power supply. The CardBus slot won't supply enough power to run a hard drive that depends on bus power.

Trouble installing SIIG Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card

I bought a Siig Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card. I am unable to install it on my G5 Quad 2.5 ghz dual 500 GIG HD PCIe because there isn't a power port to plug into. I called Apple & they said no can do. Siig support said I could plug into my "DVD drive". I rechecked the super drive & confirmed that there is not a forr pin in line power port. I have read postings of other G5 (dual processor) owners using this card. Is my problem unique to the G5 quad or is there a solution? Please help John

Most of the time if a card or something requires power, the vendor should have included a "Y-splitter" with it so that you can run DVD and card.
I thought PCIe would have more than enough, too. I tend to avoid SIIG though, having seen too many issues on various cards. They use to use ACard but seem to be branching out on their own.
There are some other FW800 PCIe. I think www.barefeats.com either did or was going to review a few. And of course OWC would have a list.
Not sure it will help, can't hurt, but I have seen and heard where a drive wouldn't mount but did after reset nvram was done. Something that ATTO recommends when changing PCI cards (like UL5D).
Oh -one thing - does the LaCie show up connected to native FW800 port okay?

For a 2008 Macbook Air, no - there's no Firewire port and no Thunderbolt port which would give you the ability to use a Thunderbolt - Firewire adaptor.
You'll have to find a friend who has a Mac with Firewire so you can connect your - is it a DV camera? - using a FW800 to 4-pin Firewire cable.

I have an iPod G2 with a firewire 400 lead. how can I attach it to my new 13 inch Mac book Pro, is there a 400 to 800 firewire converter. USB lead wont work with the Macbook Pro. iPod used as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go.

My G2 iPod that I use as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go cannot link with my new 13" Macbook Pro cause it uses a firewire 400 lead. It will not work with a USB lead. Is there a firewire 800 ipod lead or converter available? Can any one shed some light on this please?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
Equipment :
iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.

I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.

No FireWire ports were found on MacBook Pro 15.4" running Mac OS 10.6.4

I recently bought a Mac Book Pro with Intel Core i7 and 2,66 GHz with a 4 GB RAM. The system is good, until I connected my external hard drive from Mac Way that connects to the laptop through a Firewire 800. The HD mounts well with a USB but not with a Firewire 800. I then went to the System Profiler and found this message in Hardware/Firewire - No FireWire ports were found.
I restarted the system and the system hangs or takes like three minutes to start, usually it starts in less than a minute. So I pressed on the power button for 5 seconds and again started the machine.
This time, surprise the HD mounts and in the Firewire in System Profiler, I have Firewire Bus, and when I click on it I have OEM ATA Device 00 and below

Leopard USB and Firewire Ports

With leopard 10.5.1 loaded, I frequently get the grey screen of death (kernal panic) if I have a USB device plugged in (other than the mouse and keyboard). I have Pantones's Huey (Screen calibrator) attached to the USB on my keyboard. After reading many forum issues about USB devices jamming up Leopard, I decided to unplug the Huey sensor... no more problems! Also I have a 500 GB WD My Book Studio external HD plugged in the back Firewire 800 Port, it works well. Plug a Digital Camcorder in the front Firewire port.. not only does my camcorder not mount, but my machine spits out the external HD and gives me an error message about improper device removal. Please release 10.5.2 and include fixes for these external device issues!
PS on a Tiger OS I have had zero conflict with these periferals

When I first installed Leopard I got an "install media is corrupt" message about the Leopard Install disk right from the start. My first thought was the hard drive. So I purchased and overnighted an new 500 GB internal hard drive to back up the main hard drive. I erased and reformatted my main hard drive to install Leopard on. Same problem. I tried to install on the new 500 GB HD no luck. I also installed 2 GB dimms at the time. Turns out the dimms weren't agreeing with leopard. I returned the dimms for new only to have the same "corrupt media" message. Crucial explained that the memory should be largest dimms toward the processor (slots 1 & 2) and so on. I put all my memory back the way it was and everything seemed normal. I installed Leopard successfully. I started to get frequent Kernal Panics with everyday use (I do graphic design). I checked the forums and kept reading about problems associated with USB and this or that program. I unplugged my Huey (used for screen color correction) and Wha-lah. No more Kernal Panics.
But, now my digital camera and my Dazzle 6in1 media reader do not mount and/or hang up my machine with a kernal panics. When I tried to boot from and use Leopards disk utility I got the "media corrupt" message again.
I just hope 10.5.2 addresses the Leopard to hardware/USB/Firewire issues.
